Advert Analysis
Name of Product: Gorilla (Cadburys Dairy Milk Chocolate), Fallon London.
Advert Details (what happens?):
Gorillia is a 90 second advert launched by Cadbury Schweppes in 2007 to promote dairy
milk chocolate. The advert is set in a music studio with ‘In the Air Tonight’ by Phil
Collins pkaying in the background. A large gorilla sits at a drum kit and plays along with
the songs famous drum fill. It begins with a purple screen and the writing ‘a GLASS and
a HALF FULL production’ across the screen, with two glasses of milk forming part of
the words. The camera then pans directly into the music studio, where we are introduced
to the gorilla with an extreme close up. After around 20 seconds, the camera begins to
zoom out and the advert shows some different angle shots of the gorilla. It is not until
around 55 seconds that it is zoomed out enough in order to see the drum kit at which the
Gorilla is sat at. Shortly after, the drums from the song kick in and we see the Gorilla
drum along. Building up to the adverts end, the camera begins to zoom out fully in order
to capture the whole room and it is then that a purple screen appears. A bar of dairy milk
chocolate becomes centre and is followed by the caption: ‘A glass and a half full of joy’
below. The advert was produced by Matthew Fone and Nicky Barnes on a £6.2 million
budget and first appeared on British Television on 31st August 2007. It has since gone on
to appear in a number of other countries including Canada, Australia, South Africa and
New Zealand.
Music & Sound Effects:
The song ‘In the Air Tonight’ by Phil Collins is played throughout the whole advert. It
begins to fade during the last 5 or do seconds. We hear the drumming of the Gorilla but
there are no other sounds apart from these.
Text:
‘a GLASS and a HALF FULL production’ is written in white text across a purple screen
at the very beginning of the advert. The two LL’s of the word FULL are built up from the
pouring milk from two glasses. More text is featured at the end after a bar of Dairy Milk
chocolate appears on a purple backdrop. It is followed by the text: ‘A glass and a half full
of joy’. This text is also white and follows the pattern of white and purple.
2. Audience:
This advert is targeted towards a large range of people. It is a humerous and comical
production, and therefore appeals to a lot of people. Families and younger audiences in
particular, however, may appreciate the humour a little more. Since it is advertising
chocolate, it is important that Cadburys reach a huge variety of people. This is because
chocolate is a food that is so heavily consumed around the world, and so their advert
must appeal to these people. The advert stands out and is easy to remember because of its
comedy elements, and so it is likely to attract a lot of people to the product/brand it is
advertising.
Message:
One message given through the advert is shown through the text ‘A glass and a half full
of joy’. This line suggests to the audience that the product they’re advertising is a product
that will bring joy and happiness. This fits in with the advert, which also aims to bring
this happiness. It does this by using comedy, and this creates a positive feel about the
product it advertises. Another message that is given through the advert is that you should
be optimistic, especially when it comes to the product. The text that reads ‘A glass and a
half full of joy’ links to the expression ‘a glass half full’, an expression that is linked to
optimism. This tells us that we should look at the good of the product and that we should
be confident in it.
