Classroom Implications:
Vyew would be a great tool to use for collaborative student projects, as many people can go online
and edit a document. Group projects could benefit from this, as they could work together on an
assignment without having to find time to meet outside class. This can be a problem because of
student’s busy schedules.
Students could upload their rough copies of work, and teachers could edit the draft using the post-
it-note feature, and the highlighting tool. Students could then use the notes and mark-ups on their
rough draft to improve, and resubmit their next copy.
Vyew would be a good tool to use for a virtual classroom as it has many functions and features that
would enhance the community of a virtual classroom, such as video conferencing or webinars.
A useful thing about Vyew is that you can change the student’s access level of the site at any time.
So if you were hosting a webinar, you can demote all student’s access to “Viewer” so that they can
only participate as a viewer during this time. This means their mouse cursor won’t be broadcast to
all members of the webinar, and are only able to view and chat. This decreases distractions.

Pros: So many functions! The basic version is free and
includes a wide range of features. No installation, entirely
online. Webcam and audio. Archives all conferences - useful
for those who miss the conference, or want to review what
was said.
Cons: Free version is supported by advertisements. It took a
decent amount of time for me to figure out all the features and
how to work the site. The free version has a 10 person limit in
each “room.” This would be an obstacle considering most
classrooms have at least twice that many. This could be solved by
having set “groups” of 10 within the class that meet together.

Concluding Opinion: I liked this tool. I think
it provides a meaningful service for teachers and
students. The site is visually appealing, but it
took a fair amount of time to figure out and I
would need to spend more time on it still to get
comfortable. I would take the time to use this if I
were teaching a virtual class. Otherwise, I would
likely stick to GoogleDocs for a similar, but more
familiar, tool.
