2.) Goals of user inclusion in innovation
• The idea of “inclusion” in general:
 Variety of perspectives which fosters creativity and wealth of ideas
 custom-tailored products for different user groups
• User inclusion is the purposeful inclusion of potential users and
customers from the very beginning of the idea until market launch and
distribution
 Higher fit-to-market through early integration of application
concepts and user needs
 Reduced risk to flop
 Faster diffusion and early discovery of socio-economic effects

Importance of gender & diversity
• Highly inhomogeneous target groups (gender, healthiness, age, …)
• Aspects of gender and diversity have to be considered and integrated
into innovation processes, e.g. in ALIAS:
 Integration of female-sensible
voice-recognition
 Different approach to technical
products of female and male
 Different needs and preferences
• Evaluation of aspects of gender
and diversity within the ALIAS project
 feedback to technical partners
 consideration of aspects when
developing the robot

usability of user interface and user manual
Evaluation of specific target groups (senior of
advanced age, disabled people)
acceptance and functionality of the pilot and
the tested scenarios
continuous testing and optimization
Written user manual, short user manual, two
example video user manuals
Outcomes
4/5.06.2013 WP 1 Presentation 9
Design and functional requirements as results of user inclusion
workshops and secondary research
A) Support Reading and writing support functions
Ground light in the night
B) Health Motivation to live healthy, health monitoring, emergency call
Information on health topics
C) Events, hobbies etc. Information on cultural and leisure events
Receiving and performing tips for entertainment from relatives
Learning / teaching functions
TV-function, Music (player), Gaming
D) Communication Telephone, E-mail, easy-to-use contact list
Support of intergenerational communication
Cross lingual chat support
E) Usability and Design Adjustable display; situational choice between voice, gesture and
touch screen control
Choice between female and male voices etc.
F) User Contact Independent perception and recognition of the user, being a
friend
4.) Achievements of WP1
Results of Field Trials I
• 29.-30. September 2011
• Two day testing with 20 testpersons (14
seniors, 6 caregivers)
• Touch screen: bending forward to screen is
uncomfortable; screen should be movable
• Body design/direction of eyes and touch
screen: front or back of ALIAS difficult to tell
apart for testers
• Speech recognition: should understand free
speech without headset; should not be
disturbed by background conversations
• Online Help/Manuals: ALIAS should provide
descriptions of functions online e.g. as videos
• Identification of user: needs to be more certain
• Motion of robot/approaching user: robot
should not infringe feet space
4/5.06.2013 WP 1 Presentation 10
4.) Achievements of WP1
Results of Field Trials II (retirement home)
• 17.-19. September 2012
• Two day testing with 5 test persons in an
outpatient retirement home
• Evaluated test runs: self-experience
scenario, ground-lightning scenario, remote
control by secondary user, event scenario
• Need for improvement especially concerning
event-scenario and speech recognition
• Users with dementia or very old people
without affinity to technical devices won’t be
our first target group; they would need
support to benefit from the features of
ALIAS (e.g. communication with others)
4/5.06.2013 WP 1 Presentation 11
4.) Achievements of WP1
Requirements identification and realization of
User Manuals
4/5.06.2013 WP 1 Presentation 12
• three kinds of manual were preferred by the users AND feasible in the
project
– video user manuals
– written user manual
– short user manual (see pictures below)

6.) Outlook / Future Work
4/5.06.2013 WP 1 Presentation 15
• Helps to find/select appropriate target groups
• Aspects of Gender & Diversity have a high relevance (e.g.
concerning sppech, design etc.)
• Ensures to prevent from only technology driven development
• Increases speed of design and chances for success
user inclusion should be part of every technical product
development
• based on findings of ALIAS other projects of WP1 partners
are influenced (e.g. functions, design, manuals, acceptance
issues)
• WP1 partners carry on working with robots in other projects if
possible (e.g. YOUSE: Robot-Era)
future work
