• Development of novel,indigenous and cost-effective technologies in the different areas of
material sciences such as optical plastics, nanotechnology and fluoropolymers.
• Synthesis and modification of new and existing monomers and polymers.
• Development of complete process technologies from lab scale to pilot scale involving
polymerization processes - free radical, ionic, bulk, suspension, emulsion, addition,
condensation and radiation polymerisation,
Characterisation and evaluation of polymeric materials, food materials, drugs, building
materials etc. using state-of-the-art instrumental techniques .
Optical Plastics
2. • Synthesis and polymerization of optical monomers & polymers of high, mid and low
refractive index.
• Development of complete process technologies for optical plastics such as spectacle
lenses, contact lenses , intraocular lenses, lenses for cameras, telescopes, etc.
• Development of optical polymers/nanocomposites with novel features of tailor making of
refractive index and Abbe number.
• Synthesis of thiourethanes and thioacrylates for high refractive index applications
• Synthesis of modified acrylates and methacrylates of varying hydrophobicity &
hydrophilicity , flexibility & rigidity for various applications such as contact lenses and
intraocular lenses.
• Synthesis and polymerization of high refractive index diols, tetrols and polythiols.
• Cast polymerization of optical buttons and lenses of varying diopters

• Evaluation of the polymers by spectroscopic (FTIR, UV-VIS), chromatographic(HPLC,

Fluoropolymers
• Developed indigeneous technologies for fluoropolymers for strategic and industrial
applications involving complete process development from monomer synthesis to
polymer development such as :
• Perfluorinated and chlorofluorinated lubricating oils and greases .
• Fluoroelastomers and fluoropolymers (thermosets and thermoplastics).

• Perfluorinated polyethers for heat transfer fluids and solvents
