Areas of Expertise
• Development of novel,indigenous and cost-effective technologies in the different areas of
material sciences such as optical plastics, nanotechnology and fluoropolymers.
• Synthesis and modification of new and existing monomers and polymers.
• Development of complete process technologies from lab scale to pilot scale involving
polymerization processes - free radical, ionic, bulk, suspension, emulsion, addition,
condensation and radiation polymerisation,
Characterisation and evaluation of polymeric materials, food materials, drugs, building
materials etc. using state-of-the-art instrumental techniques .
Optical Plastics
• Synthesis and polymerization of optical monomers & polymers of high, mid and low
refractive index.
• Development of complete process technologies for optical plastics such as spectacle
lenses, contact lenses , intraocular lenses, lenses for cameras, telescopes, etc.
• Development of optical polymers/nanocomposites with novel features of tailor making of
refractive index and Abbe number.
• Synthesis of thiourethanes and thioacrylates for high refractive index applications
• Synthesis of modified acrylates and methacrylates of varying hydrophobicity &
hydrophilicity , flexibility & rigidity for various applications such as contact lenses and
intraocular lenses.
• Synthesis and polymerization of high refractive index diols, tetrols and polythiols.
• Cast polymerization of optical buttons and lenses of varying diopters
• Film formation of optical polymers
• Evaluation of the polymers by spectroscopic (FTIR, UV-VIS), chromatographic(HPLC,
GC,GC-MS) and elemental analysis, refractive index, Abbe number
Fluoropolymers
• Developed indigeneous technologies for fluoropolymers for strategic and industrial
applications involving complete process development from monomer synthesis to
polymer development such as :
• Perfluorinated and chlorofluorinated lubricating oils and greases .
• Fluoroelastomers and fluoropolymers (thermosets and thermoplastics).
• Fluoropolymeric additives for ink and paint industry
• Perfluorinated polyethers for heat transfer fluids and solvents
• Micronisation of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)
• Metal filled PTFE nanocomposites with improved wear resistance.
• PVDF with dielectric properties.
• Cryogenic photopolymerisation, suspension polymerization and emulsion
polymerization techniques for the synthesis of fluoropolymers.
• Synthesis of fluoromonomers : Vinylidene Fluoride, Chlorotrifluoroethylene.

• Metal containing nanocomposites of high and ultra high refractive index with high
optical transparency for optical applications.
• Metal containing optically transparent nanocomposites for solar selective applications
such as light concentrators and waveguides.
• Solar active nanocomposites with photocatalytic properties for industrial effluent
treatment.
• Modification of band gap energies of nanoparticles to prepare IR, UV and visible active
materials.
• Polymeric nanocomposites with photocatalytic properties.
• Polymeric nanocomposites for stealth and camouflage applications.
• Metal filled PTFE with improved wear resistance for high performance applications
• In-situ and ex-situ synthesis and dispersion of nanoparticles in polymer matrices,
Textiles :
• Polymeric nanocomposites with enhanced barrier properties towards oxygen and
moisture.

• Hydrophopic Polymeric Coatings with High Water Vapor Transmission for specialised
applications

• Development of perm selective membranes for diagnostic applications with selective
permeation towards blood analytes.
• Development of super absorbable polymeric films based on novel derivatives of natural
polymers.
• Development of breathable films for Liquid Cooling Ventilation Garment of space suits
of astronauts.
• Development of formulations for paints and coatings with anti-corrosion properties.
• Synthesis of specialty surfactants.
• Structure-activity correlation using HPLC, GC and LC-MS.
Analysis & Characterisation :
• Analysis and characterisation as per international and national specifications by Thermal
methods (TGA, DTA, DSC), rheology ( MARS rheometer, glass viscometers, Brookfield
viscometer), molecular weight (GPC) and structure (IR, UV) for :
• Studies on the perfomance properties and structural determination of
materials
• Quality certification of various polymeric materials
• Structure-Activity Co-relations
• Determination of the course of reactions.

in polymer synthesis, Polymerisation and characterisation.
