2. LOCATION AND DEMOGRAPHY
• Radovanu is a commune in Călărași County , Romania. It is coposed of two villages, Radovanu
and Valea Popii
• The commune is located in the
south-west of the county,
• on the right bank of river Argeş.
• According to the census carried out
• in 2011, the population of Radovanu
• commune amounts to 4,394 inhabitants.
3. POLITICS AND ADMINISTRATION
• Radovanu commune is administered by a mayor and a local council composed of 13
councilors.
• The Mayor, Vasilica Dobrescu, from the National Liberal Party, was elected in 2008.
4. RADOVANU – A VILLAGE FULL OF
HISTORY
• At the end of the 19th century, the commune was part of the Olteniţa net of Ilfov
County and was formed only from the residence village with 4600 inhabitants, living
in 770 houses and 9 huts. There was a church (near the ruins of the former Ghica
palace) and a mixed school with 197 students (of which 24 were girls), and the largest
owner of land was Dacia.
• In 1950, the commune was included in Oltenita district of Bucharest, and in 1968 it
returned to Ilfov County, re-established. In 1981, a regional administrative
reorganization led to the transfer of the commune to Calarasi County.
5. • Eight objectives in the Radovanu commune are included in the list of historical monuments
in Calarasi County as monuments of local interest. Six of them are archaeological sites: the
Coadelor Valley site, comprising a medieval settlement and one of the 8th-9th centuries; The
Neolithic Muscalu settlement, attributed to the Boian culture (Spanţov phase) and the
Gumelniţa culture , the first gorgan from "Grădişte" and from "Dincă Brothers", dating back
to the 2nd centuries BC; The site of the "Coala Malului", comprising a settlement and a
necropolis from the Latène period; The fortified settlement of "Jidovescu" dating back to the
Latène period (all this in the Radovanu village); And the site of Valea Popii, comprising a
settlement from the 2nd-2nd century BC, And a necropolis from the Latène period.
• The other two objectives are classified as architectural monuments: the ruins of 18th-century
Ghica palace, located in the southern part of the Radovanu village; And the ruins of the
church "Assumption of the Virgin" (built in 1754) and located in the cemetery of the same
village.
