1. Evaluation: Question 6.
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
Throughout creating our film opening we used various different editing and researching
methods, where we found some were easier to use than others. Our main researching
method was Google as it entails using YouTube and Wikipedia. We made sure we knew as
much as we could about Thrillers before starting.
We started by looking into the UK Film Council statistics to see where Thriller came in most
watched film genres. The first graph showed how the Thriller/suspense genre was second to
Comedy on the percentage of people wanting to watch it. (26 %.) It then came 4 th on the
genre most people enjoy. The other two graphs went into detail about whether the thriller
genre is preferred by male or female, people with children or now and social class. It also
came 4th again on the most watched genre. As previously described females over 35 would
be the primary audience and males over 35 the secondary. The social class statistics are all
too similar to be able to want to do a particular one; this enabled us to choose ourselves.
We then looked into previous thriller trailers, whether they
are made by students or a professional film company, this
allowed us to see what people like to see in a thriller film and
how much they give away in the trailer. After looked through
a few trailers we looked into film openings, one we
2. particularly liked was Se7en, this was because of the way the titles are portrayed and the
creepy hands, which helped with establishing the genre. It also helped us with ideas of how
we should show our opening credits and make sure we should establish the genre.
We also looked into other students opening scenes for their Thriller films, this was
particularly helpful as we could then evaluate the good and bad things about the opening
which showed us what we should and shouldn’t put in our opening. YouTube was easy to
use but was sometimes blocked because of the school boundaries which made it difficult to
access some things.
We used Blogger to publish all our work on, from our brief to the final film opening, we all had to get
used to blogger to blog our work progress because most hadn’t used it before. Personally I found it
easy and brilliant to work with. As well as being easy to use it also looked professional.
3. Another site we used regularly was Prezi, which is effectively a
better looking PowerPoint presentation; it allowed us to express
information about or on our work and show progression. I had never used Prezi before and
found it temperamental, it often force closes or refuses to save, which leaded to loss of
work and lack of time to finish the work needed. It does look good though, and what it lacks
in technology advantages it gains in looks.
4. We also used SlideShare which is just as temperamental as
Prezi, as a site it seemed to not like uploading our work. It
helps show our work from a document to a presentation.
5. Apart from that; when successfully uploaded the slide looks very professional and I learnt
how to use the site the more I used it.
For editing and creating our film opening we used several different computer software’s;
Photoshop and Movie Studio Platinum.
I have previously used Photoshop so that was easy to get the hang of when editing
pictures for the production; it was also useful to edit the production logo. Movie Studio was
difficult at first because we didn’t really know what we were doing, it was also slow on the
school computers and because of it being software we couldn’t access it at home. This
6. limited the amount of time we could spend editing the film. It also took hours to render
when we had finished the opening which was a time waster.
When filming our opening we used:
Two HD cameras
Two booms/microphones
Various light sources
Two tripods
Voice recorder.
As two of our group have knowledge in photography using the cameras and tripods
was easy and we got the hang of it quickly. The only problem we had with the cameras was
attaching the microphones’ and remembering to actually turn them on.When filming
lighting was also a problem so we had to use various flashlights to overcome this.
