CURRICULUM
• Stressing arts and literature, little emphasis is given on
math and science
• The humanities are considered because
• Through humanities, try to awaken modern individuals
to the dangers of being swallowed up by the
megalopolis and runaway technology (wide awaken)
• Do not have definite rules about what the curriculum
should comprise. Believe that the student-in-situation
making a choice should be the deciding factor,
(curriculum from the standpoint of the learner rather
than as a collection of discrete subjects)
❖ they believe the language promotes learning
❖ its doesn’t mean there is no math science but
with the heavy emphasis on math science
❖ we see today where every young person is
supposed to become either a doctor or an
engineer or a computer scientist
❖ today its not going to work there are other areas
which human beings can excel
❖ eventho the curriculum give important on arts
literatures but did not neglect teaching math and
science
❖we want to understand what human life is all about
and how we can survive in this extremely competitive
time
❖do you think, people still thinking and working the
same way today as they did hundred years ago?
❖ probably not because time have changed the world.
the virtual reality exists today that did not exist a
hundred years ago
❖ now people are drowning in the sea of information
and knowledge
❖ how can we help us to swim safely through the sea so
that they can develop a better life for themselves and
all human beings as well
• today we live in urban cities large centres large homes and the
virtual world and so many technology.
• I have seen students with a personal computer a laptop an iPad and
iPhone and iPod do we really need five gadgets?
• its look too much. its seem we interact too much with technology
not human
• it is important for young people to learn they don’t simply interact
with machines only but they must look around to interact with
people for social interaction
• in a reconstructionist curriculum the rule is
simple
• the student is in charge of his learning situation
• let them learn the way they wants to learn that is
good enough.
• learning will happen
Role of Teacher
• Emphasizes individual choices (there is no
common way of viewing the world)
• Teacher must take risks, expose themselves to
resistant students, and work constantly to enable
their students to become ‘wide awake’
• Due to greater experience and knowledge, it is
the teacher’s responsibility to develop an
educational environment that promotes
awareness of the past and present, and of the
future possibilities
• Teacher help students become sensitive to
human possibility and understand that they
themselves are both necessarily and fully
determined by the past (every present is
conditioned by the past) but every present is
pregnant with future possibilities for change
and new direction – individuals can change
the future
• we are different people
• we come with different experiences into this world
• we bring these experiences of ours into our
classrooms
• the teacher views the student as individuals with
individual choices
• there are different ways in which people learn
• that a different way in which people wants to learn
• we should promote those different ways in our
classrooms
⮚teachers must take risks
⮚teacher also can make mistakes, can be wrong like
students because teacher also human being.
⮚taking risks is trying things we never tried before
⮚if it works great do it again
⮚if it doesn’t work don’t give up reflect and see what
went wrong and find solution to solve it.
Sambungan 2
⮚ there are 2 types of students
⮚ those resistant students the easy nice kids are great they will do it on their own because teacher is in the front of the classroom and the first row the
second row maybe the third row may get the teachers attention
⮚ these resistant kids that need the teachers help instead of you will always find these kids sitting at the back where the teacher never reaches
⮚ how can the teacher involve those resistant kids in the regular activities of the classroom?
i. make sure they do their work
ii. make sure they do their work in time and on their own
⮚ so these are keys that will help the teacher become better at reconstructing
• the teacher has the experience and qualifications so the
teacher should really be the one in control
• whatever happens in the classroom it is the teacher
responsibility to create that environment that ambience
that surroundings that will help students focus better on
their work
• teacher job to connect the students present with the past
and the future
• how does the teacher work it out?
– the student is in the present
– we teachers have come from the past with our
qualifications and experiences
– from the past which we bring to the present of the
student
– the student has to survive in the future with whatever
happens to him or her today
– and its help the student understand how one thing
leads to another
⮚As I said the teacher is a product of the past
⮚the student is in the present and the future
⮚so the future for the student will come from
human possibility
⮚what all did our generation do to bring us to
– where we are
– what all is this generation going to do
– to take them to where they would like to be
– and so this cycle kind of continues from one
generation to the next
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
• Stressing individual freedom
• Empowering students to make choices about what and how
they will learn
• Buber “i-thou approach” – student and teacher learn
cooperatively from each other in a non-traditional.
Nonthreatening friendship. (posing questions, generating
activities, and working together)
• Educational methods which help teacher in discovering the
excitement of learning and opening up a whole new world
of possibilities for students
• Students become more articulate and capable of
comprehension and self-expression with the help of
teacher’s approach
