It is the largest organ of your body.Your skin protects you from heat, light, injuryand infection. It also serves as a storage containerfor water, fats and Vitamin D. Finally, it helps toregulate your body temperature.Your skin has two layers: the epidermis or outerlayer, and the dermis or inner layer. The epider-mis is made up of two layers of cells: on top arethe squamous cells, followed by the basal cells.Beneath the basal cells are melanocytes, the cellsthat produce melanin – the color of your skin.The dermis is made up of blood and lymph ves-sels, hair follicles and glands that produce sweatand an oily substance called sebum, which helpsprevent the skin from drying out.Due to its vital, protective nature, it is importantto keep your skin healthy by avoiding the risksassociated with skin cancer. Don’t make the mis-take of thinking that since your skin is “external,”skin cancer is not as harmful as “internal” cancers.Two layers of epidermis =two types of cancerThere are two primary forms of skin cancer:basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.(“Carcinoma” basically means a form of cancerthat begins in the cells that line or cover anorgan). In this issue of VitaJournal, the focus willbe on squamous cell carcinoma – skin cancer ofthe first layer of cells in the first layer of skin.There is a third form of skin cancer, calledmelanoma. This form of cancer begins deeperin the skin. Basal and squamous cell carcinomasare known together as non-melanoma cancers.You only have about a 1% risk over the courseof your life of getting melanoma, so the specificsof that disease will not be covered here. Basaland squamous cell cancers make up the other99% risk.The biggest risk factors for gettingskin cancer are:• Having light or fair skin, light colored eyes, and naturally red or blonde hair• Prolonged, unprotected exposure to sun light (ultraviolet radiation)• Other ultraviolet radiation, such as intanning booths• Free radical damageSkin cancer risksSquamous cell carcinomas account for about 20%of diagnosed skin cancers, and have an excellentprognosis if detected early: it is a relatively easycancer to completely cure. Cancers of this sortare most commonly found on the ears, face andmouth, and seem to appear more frequently onolder people. One reason this form of cancerappears on those parts of the body is because oftheir frequent exposure to sunlight. Squamouscell carcinomas often develop from pre-cancerous lesions – an actinic keratosis, whichis a lesion that looks like a rough, flat pink spotor area on the skin. If the lesion develops intocancer, it usually becomes raised above thesurface of the skin and becomes more firm.Tumors of this nature are often more aggressivethan basal cell cancers, and show an increasedlikelihood of spreading to other parts of the body.DetectionDetection of skin cancer early on is, like allcancers, central to successful treatment. Youcan perform self-examinations at home todetect early signs of skin cancer.• Look for a change in the size, color orshape of any moles.• Exams should take place after a bath orshower, preferably in front of a full-lengthmirror and in good lighting.• Be sure to have someone check your backfor moles and lesions, or use a hand mirror,and include a skin cancer screening in yourregular doctor visits.• Don’t wait for any pain at the site of anydiscoloration; pain is rarely a symptomof cancer.If you find any new moles, changes to old moles,or areas looking like the photos on page 11, see adoctor immediately for a diagnoses. While antioxidants are plentiful infruits and vegetables, most people do not getthe minimum amount they need from thesesources, and should strongly consider takingan antioxidant supplement. So, don’t let lack of space curb your love ofgardening. Try it on a smaller scale, using containers. Container planting provides color,texture, fragrance and even fresh produce in a modest-size area. If your home has limited gardening space, use containers on your front step, on a smallpatio or on a balcony – it’s the perfect solution, indoors or out. Potted plants are alsomobile – easy to move to center stage, by your front door, for example, when they are intheir prime. Here’s one way to arrange a kitchen garden container. Our plan includes tomatoes, basiland peppers, but there are many other possibilities. Tomatoes and basil grown togetherenhance each other’s flavor, and with this mix you’ll have fresh ingredients for a salad,marinara sauce or pesto. Add some flowers if you like to give your arrangement a punchof color.The beauty and bounty of gardening has attracted people from the beginning of timePlantsBuy tomato and pepper plants from a nursery, so you’ll know the plants are strong. The staff at the garden store will alsobe able to help you select a nutrient-rich soil or growing medium and a fertilizer. Since you’ll be growing in containers, theplants are dependent on the soil and the nutrients you provide for nourishment. ContainersYour plants will need adequate drainage. Terracotta, stone or plastic pots all work well. If you choose 20-inch pots, you’llhave room to group plants together. Self-watering pots are a great option. If you plan to put them away after growing season,consider buying containers that can be stacked for storage. Use gravel, styrofoam or packing peanuts inside the bottom ofthe pots for drainage. PlantingOne tomato plant, one basil plant and one pepper plant make an attractive container arrangement. Add flowers such asmarigolds for color. Marigolds also repel bugs and attract beneficial bees. If the vegetables or herbs grow too large for the con-tainer, you can transplant the flowers to another pot. Consider climateMake sure to pay attention to planting dates based on your climate and frost-free period, just as you would with any outdoorgarden. The benefit of containers is that you can move them in under cover if it gets too be too cold or too hot. Chooseplants according to the amount of sun available in your location and climate. Most vegetable and herb plants need at least sixhours of sunlight each day. Fromthe world’s view, a servant is a person whoattends to the master. We can look aroundand see the affluent, who often have servantsto meet their every need and desire. But withoutthe God factor in the picture, we would look atthose who serve as being “beneath” the onesthey serve. This is not what God’s Word says.Let’s look at God’s view in Ephesians 4:12. Itsays, “for the perfecting of saints, for the work ofthe ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.”When you have a great relationship withsomeone, you want to be with them. You want totalk with them and help them when you can. Ifyou are asked to do a favor for your friend, you donot hesitate to do whatever you can. Having arelationship with God is no different.A servant’s heart refers to the fact that theirgreatest relationship is with God. It is spelledout in Ephesians 4:12: “perfecting the saints (that’sus), for the work of the ministry (serving another)edifying the body of Christ” (showing God’s love toothers). Throughout the Bible, we see examplesof the needs of God’s people being met by otherswho reach out to help. Jesus said in Matthew5:40, “If you do this to the least of mine, you havedone unto me.” God loves us so much that He willsend someone when we really need the help. Ihave experienced this in my very own life.One time in particular stands out as I writethis article. Our family business had just failed,and I had put everything we had into it so that itwould work. My wife and our three children weredependent on me for the basics – food, shelterand all the other items a growing family needs.This particular day I had put the last penny to myname in the car. When I arrived home, my wifeshared that we did not have food for dinner thatnight. We prayed and asked God for help.We were about to make a simple sandwich forthe kids when the doorbell rang. There stood afamily from the church with a hot dinner, severalgrocery bags of food and a $20 bill. Before Icould even say thank you, the father startedapologizing to us. He explained that God hadlaid on their hearts earlier that day to bring foodand gas money to us. He said they decided to eatfirst before they came over. They shared that theywere all silent during the meal because each ofthem felt like they should have come to us withtheir gifts before they took care of their ownmeal. God specifically had a plan for us to havea hot meal at dinnertime to show His love.When we are obedient and listen to Godand serve others for His sake, not ours, we aredisplaying a servant’s heart.
