Health reform beginswith you!by michael r. ellison, ceo & founder of triVita, inc.The subject of healthcare reform continues to echo through the hallsof government in Washington D.C. and is creating tension, strife anddiscord among many.We all realize it is a subject with many tentacles attached to it.But focusing on the aspects of health that the media is discussingis dangerous because it can make us lose sight of the bigger picture. The bigger picture is that healthy living requires engaging andsupporting the physical, emotional and spiritual sides of each person. Your body has an amazingability to heal itself when given the right nutrients and nurturing, restoring itself to optimalfunctioning. If we are not careful, our health – which is precious to each of us – becomes apolitical agenda and a debate subject for the media and the masses, and we lose sight of the realissue – how do we in North America achieve greater health for ourselves and those we love?I believe it is time for us to encourage our politicians to consider the bigger picture and tosupport healthcare reform that encourages supplementation and rewards healthy lifestylechoices. Much could be done in reform to reward companies who have healthcare insuranceand also educate their employees about good health practices. An example would be ourcompany: TriVita asks each new employee to sign an agreement stating that they will pursuea wellness journey to enhance their well-being. We have many wonderful stories of newemployees who have experienced greater health and well-being by embracing the 10 Essentialsfor Health and Wellness and consistently supplementing with our products. This is not a time for us to be silent and let politicians and the media wrestle with these issues.Write to your elected representatives to let them know your recommendations in supportinghealth practices for the whole person. Although our Canadian Members are not involved in theheated healthcare debate, the issue of achieving optimal health is relevant to people everywhere. There are several components involved in achieving optimal wellness. Obviously when aperson is diagnosed with disease, there is a need for medical treatment. But here is where weget short-sighted: standard medical treatment focuses on a quick fix, rather than providing aperson with information about which nutrients could aid their body in the healing process.Instead of dealing with the cause of the wound, medical treatment focuses on bandaging thewound. Wellness is about giving yourself the tools you need to help protect against wounds –and not just physical ones. The physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of the person must be engaged to truly experiencewellness. Many of our health conditions and issues result from lifestyle choices which ignore goodhealth essentials – and yet we expect a medical treatment to fix our diseases and the symptomsthat rob us of our quality of life. Why am I writing today to even discuss this issue with you? For the simple reason that you cando much to enhance your own wellness experience by embracing all aspects of your health – inaddition to whatever medical services you are fortunate enough to receive. But I encourage youThe physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of the personmust be engaged to truly experience wellness.10Essentialsfor health and wellnessJoin with TriVita as we begin our seconddecade of health and wellness for all. It’s hard tobelieve we’re fast approaching theyear’s end. For many of you, this mayhave been one of the toughest years of your life, whether it was due to the loss of a home, job ormaybe even a loved one. There seems to be adoom and gloom mentality everywhere.Recently I put together some short stories thatmy mom wrote 10 years ago, and one of themwas titled Our Cotton Pickin’ Honeymoon. Myparents were married in 1932 in the heart ofthe Great Depression. AsI was editing her story,I was moved by howshe described theearly years of theirmarriage and howin the midst of allthe uncertainty andturmoil, they weretruly happy. They were only 20and 22 when they firstmarried and didn’t havea car, but then my dadbought a Model T Coupeon credit for $10, paying it off $1 a week. Theyset off on their honeymoon adventure lookingfor cotton to open in the west Texas area.Apparently my mom and dad could pull cottonfaster than most, and were able to pull 1,000pounds a day for a whopping $3! They drovearound with an old mattress tied to the topof their car, uncertain as to where they wouldlay their heads each night. They didn’t knowfrom day to day where their next meal wouldcome from, but it didn’t matter as they were soin love. I still see my mom’s eyes light up evennow, 70+ years later, when she reminisces aboutthat time in her life.Maybe what we’re going through right nowisn’t really so bad. What I hear from my momwhen she shares about that challenging timein her life was not doom and gloom, but rathera magnificent adventure. Have you ever heardan orchestra playinga symphony? Everyinstrument has a unique sound. Each plays a unique part in themasterpiece. The conductor brings out thebest in every musician. Even the acousticsof the surroundings enhance or detractfrom the performance. This is an accurate description of the way weharmonize with our world. From the instantof conception, the cells are a symphonyof activity, and this harmony continuesthroughout our lives. Cells contain their ownimmune system. This cellular immunity joinswith the rest of the orchestra – the body – inharmonious music, ever changing to meetnew and varied circumstances. The orchestraYour immune system is the great harmonizerbetween the world inside your body and theworld outside. Many scientists believe that theimmune system may also be the “mind-bodyconnection,” the communication system thatchanges the internal world of our body inrelationship with the external world basedon our values, thoughts and feelings.Just as an orchestra has sections, such as strings, brass, woodwind and percussion, the immunesystem has divisions. The first, importantdivision is “active” versus “passive” immunity.Passive immunity includes barrier protectionlike your skin as well as surface resistance frombacteria on our skin, in our sinuses, lungs, digestive system and reproductive system. All mucous membranes work to filter what issupposed to “come in” to our body and whatshould stay out.Active immunity includes two furtherdivisions called “adaptive” and “innate.” Theword innate describes something you wereborn with rather than something acquiredalong the way. The innate immune system isnot really specific; it reacts in whatever wayis needed at the time – like the musician thatplays multiple instruments. Our adaptiveimmune system “goes to school” to adapt oradjust to its environment. It is very specific, often doing only one thing to contribute toharmony. Elements of our immune system canlearn from experience and help us adapt tochanging circumstances. The musiciansImmune cells are characterized by what theydo in a healthy body and how they react insomeone with compromised health. Theimmune system consists of individual membersplaying together. Cells and proteins in yourbloodstream, your lymphatic system and thoseresiding deep within your organs react to yourinternal and external environment. Thesemake up the symphony and you won’t beable to single out any element of the immunesystem unless it becomes disharmonious withyour environment, your body or your mind. For example, certain cells contain hugeamounts of histamine. But you would neverknow this unless you react to a toxin such aspollen or in response to emotional distress. On the other hand, white blood cells, which also contain histamines, are ofteninvolved in autoimmune reactions whereyour immune system suddenly turns hostileto tissues inside your own body. Commonautoimmune disorders like rheumatoidarthritis, lupus and type 1 diabetes occurwhen single members of the immune“orchestra” play the wrong tune – loudly!Linda Wright, M.D.harmony From the instant of conception, the cells are a symphony of activity, and this harmony continuesthroughout our lives.harmonyharmonyharmonyharmonyHow to keep yourimmune system inmake sure it works smarter, not harderby Dr. Linda Wrighttrivita.com4 l VITAJOURNAL Celebrating 10 Years of Health and Wellness

Our immune system usuallyprovides it. But what happens when things gowrong? What happens if we are exposed to“bad” bacteria, virus or other pathogen?Disease and our immune systemSometimes we ask the wrong questions whenwe start to experience disharmony in ourimmune system. Sometimes we ask, in effect,“What makes sick people sick?” That’s likeasking, “What ingredients make bad music?”As pertinent as that question is to a sick person,it is usually more productive to ask, “Whatmakes music great?” or, “What keeps healthypeople well – and how can I be one of them?”Wellness is created in the way our immunesystem interacts with our environment, basedon our genetics and modified by our behavioror lifestyle. Illness is really a disharmonyproduced by trauma, toxins from inside oroutside our body, deficiencies in vital elementslike air, water, sleep and nutrients as well asemotional distress. In order to prevent disease and achievewellness, we must restore harmony betweenour world and our immune system.Deadly virusesA good example of harmony with ourworld occurs with viruses. In medicine weknow that viruses exist all around us justas they have always existed. During anepidemic there will be people who never getsick, people that get sick and recover and, unfortunately, people who get sick and die.The difference between these groups haslittle to do with the nature of the virus – itremains virtually the same in all three cases. The different responses are based on theharmony of the immune system.Immune system imbalances are trauma orinjury, toxins from inside or outside of yourbody, deficiencies in elements critical forlife and the immune-suppressing scourge ofemotional distress.Injured tissues limit circulation by blood andlymph. Poor circulation allows waste createdby the cells to accumulate and become acesspool. Toxic waste becomes the target forinfection and disease. Fortunately, appropriateexercise can increase healthy circulation andintense antioxidant nutrition can restorefunction to an injured area.Toxins and poisons from our environment mayalso accumulate in our tissues and smolderfor decades. These toxins become inflamed;inflammation creates the matrix for disharmonyin the immune system resulting in disease. Many people are deficient in oxygen thoughthere is an abundance of air surrounding them.Oxygen deficiency causes acidic tissues; acidpromotes disease. Deficiencies in air, water, sunlight, sleep and nutrients are the mostcommon causes of immune system disharmony. We can restore balance by attending to thesebasic needs.Emotional distress is an immediate trigger forimmune system discord. As soon as a thoughtarises in the mind, it is already translated intoa posture of the immune system. Fortunately,we can – through an act of will – change ourthoughts to positive and have a harmonizingeffect on our immune system.ConclusionWe participate in this symphony along withthe individual members of the orchestrawithin our immune system. We are not merelypassive observers. Take time to learn how toharmonize your immune system so it workssmarter, not harder.Buy both andSAVE!

Dr. Conard is considereda national expert on disease prevention.TienaHealth also conducts clinical trials.Scott Conard, M.D.Founder, TienaHealthIs your life touched by the terrible toll ofAlzheimer’s? If you’re one of the millionswho care for people with this progressivedisease, you probably see its impact all toooften. The memory loss, confusion and erosionof mind and body can be heartbreaking towitness, and can’t yet be cured.During Alzheimer’s Disease AwarenessMonth, I’d like to share encouraging newsfor those who are coping with this affliction, and for their family and friends. There arehopeful steps being taken in the fight againstAlzheimer’s, and one involves Vitamin B-12.Brain health and B-12A small but significant 2008 study suggests alink between low levels of Vitamin B-12 andhigher chances of having brain volume loss(also called brain erosion). Since one of theresults of Alzheimer’s disease is brain erosion, this could signal even greater importancefor maintaining healthy levels of B-12. Thestudy, from the University of Oxford, England, reached this dramatic conclusion:People with lower levels of Vitamin B-12were six times more likely to have brainvolume loss (also called brain erosion) thanthose with higher B-12 levels. This finding led the researchers to suggestthat B-12 may protect against brain erosion, which is linked to reduced mental function.A reduction in mental function, of course, is akey outward symptom of Alzheimer’s disease. The British study took place over five years, involving 107 adults ages 61 to 87.The goal of the study was simple: What’sthe link between Vitamin B-12 levels andbrain erosion? To find the answer, accordingto results published in the medical journalNeurology, participants underwent annualblood tests, MRIs, physical exams andmemory tests. None of the study subjectshad any mental impairment when theybegan the project.More B-12 equals bigger brainsAt the end of the five years, all theparticipants had B-12 levels within the normalrange; however, the differences in brain volumewere significant between those in the normal-low range and those in the normal-high range.Again, those with the lowest B-12 levels weresix times more likely to suffer measurable brainerosion than those with the highest levels.Naturally, those of us who are informed aboutthe importance of B-12 in leading a healthylife are excited about having even moreevidence in favor of this powerhouse vitamin. We’ve known for some time that peoplewho have a B-12 deficiency can experiencesymptoms caused by decreased mental andnerve functioning. These symptoms caninclude mental confusion and forgetfulness, mood swings and even psychotic behaviorlike seeing and/or hearing things. What’s relatively new, though, is theconnection between brain volume, B-12and diseases like Alzheimer’s. I urge youto continue supplementing with TriVita’squality B-12, and to share its importancewith others. If you’re concerned about degenerative diseasessuch as Alzheimer’s, call 1-800-991-7116,and ask a TriVita Wellness Consultant aboutHCY Guard®. Perhaps it’s when you’ve run outof breath after climbing the stairs – or whenyour breathing gets fast and shallow during astressful or tense moment. As babies, we breathe deeply(and properly) from the abdomen, but the worries and bad habitsof adulthood often lead to poor breathing habits. As you age, your lung capacity declines an average of 9% – 22% perdecade. Lung capacity is a primary measure of longevity. Statistically, the greater your lung capacity, the longer you will live. That’s becausethe health benefits of deep breathing are wide-ranging: everything fromgreater energy and improved detoxification to reduced stress and betterdigestion. All the more reason to take time for deep breathing exercisesevery day.Breathing basicsYou can do your daily deep breathing exercises just about anywhere, butthe best place is a calm and quiet environment where you can really focusand relax. Start with 10 minutes of deep breathing and gradually increaseyour time.Sit comfortably in a chair or lie flat on your back with your kneeselevated. Place one hand on your abdomen just above your navel andthe other hand on your chest. Take a few deep breaths and focus onexpanding your abdomen as you inhale. Your chest should rise only alittle and only at the top of your breath.Breathe in through your nose, letting the air fill your lungs. When yourlungs are completely full, hold your breath for a moment and then releasethe air through your mouth with a sigh. Repeat this as you count to fouron the inhale and four on the exhale.Continue breathing in this manner. When you feel comfortable, extendyour breath counts to six and then up to eight. Examples of antigens range frombacteria and viruses, to toxins and blood ortissue from another person. In response, theimmune system produces antibodies thatattach themselves to antigens in order todestroy and remove them from the body. Inpeople with an autoimmune disorder, theimmune system is unable to distinguish anantigen from a normal cell, and therefore, mistakenly turns on itself to attack normal, healthy tissues.Inflammation:A parallel to autoimmune disease?Inflammation, like the immune system, typically plays a protective role in ourbodies. In fact, it can be a lifesaver, as itworks to ward off illness-causing germsand toxins. The moment we are exposedto a hazardous substance, like a virus orparasite, inflammation attacks the invaderand surrounding tissues that may havebeen harmed and infected. Inflammationthen quickly subsides and the tissues canheal. There are times, however, when thisinflammation response doesn’t shut off asit is supposed to. It becomes chronic, andcan lead to a host of varying diseases. This is why so many people have had dramaticresults with Nopalea. And, untilsomething can be done, we must all be awareof the dangers of inflammation, and thesymptoms of autoimmune disorders. In the meantime, researchers knowthat there are things that can be doneto lessen inflammation, so symptomscan become more manageable. Eatingnutritiously, exercising, losing any excessfat and supplementing with the rightnutrients all help to reduce inflammationand accelerate the healing process.Nopalea’s inflammation-fighting Betalainsmay bring some relief to those sufferingfrom autoimmune disorders triggered orworsened by inflammation. With a reduction ininflammation, pain can be relieved and soothed, and the body can function better, overall. It may take many more years until doctorsand researchers can isolate the cause of runawayinflammation and why some immune systemscannot recognize antigens from healthy cells. For now, Nopalea, the incredible wellness drinkthat helps relieve the symptoms of unwantedinflammation, can be part of the solution.Eating nutritiously, exercising and supplementingwith the right nutrients all helpto reduce inflammation andaccelerate the healing process.FRONT BACK™GiftCard$25Shareyourstory,getgreatrewards!What’s your amazing Nopalea story? trivita.com12 l VITAJOURNAL Celebrating 10 Years of Health and WellnessThis feature continues a new VitaJournal seriesabout toxins around us: in our food, air andwater and in our daily environments.Ah, that crisp autumn air! Breathe deep, and inhale life-giving oxygen... and probablysome of the 188 toxic air pollutants targetedby the U.S. Environmental ProtectionAgency, too.It seems that bad air days are the rule insteadof the exception in many areas now. Ourradio stations and email alerts give us hourlybulletins on smog, ozone levels and allergyirritants, while the evening news offers awrap-up of the day’s breathing hazards.Certainly, both the U.S. and Canada havegovernment muscle to try to keep our airclean, but it’s a struggle.Dirty air isn’t just unsightly; it can causeserious disease. And young children and theelderly are especially vulnerable to the toxinswe may be inhaling every day. Some of themost common poisons:• Ozone, which can cause asthma andother breathing problems• Particulate matter, (basically tinybits of dust and soot found everywhere),which can damage lungs• Sulfur dioxide, a breathing hazardwhich can aggravate existing heart andlung disease• Volatile organic compounds, which can cause cancer“Acceptable” levels of air pollution may becausing unacceptable damage to lungs andairways, and not just among the young andold. A study out just months ago shows thateven when concentrations of ozone are belowcurrent standards, young adults exercisingoutdoors can experience coughing and pain.Of course, not all the hazards in our air arethe fault of humans. Pollen from grasses, weeds and trees, along with leaf mold, canproduce allergy miseries for many people. Still, these “natural” elements can combine withpollutants to make breathing uncomfortable,if not dangerous.Clear and present dangers, even years laterCleaning up the air goes beyond switchingto electric cars, or fining factories that spewcontaminants into the sky. As time goes on,science finds evidence that hazards we thoughtwere gone are lingering on and on. Oneexample: carbon tetrachloride.“Carbon tet,” as it’s called, was a commoningredient in fire suppressants, pesticidesand dry cleaning until about the mid-1990s.Then, it was banned because it was found tobe eroding the Earth’s protective ozone layer.Known to cause cancer and to damage theliver, kidneys and brain, carbon tet can lingerin the air for up to 50 years. While not quite as dangerous as pollutantslike benzene, a cancer-causer found in motorvehicle tailpipe emissions, carbon tet is justpart of an army of toxins. It’s one of thousandsof chemicals that we’re exposed to everyday. Says one poison expert with California’sEnvironmental Protection Agency, “Youbreathe in carbon tet and it’s absorbed. It’sgoing to get into your body.”What you can doThough you might be tempted to stay indoorswith an air cleaner and face mask, of coursethat isn’t practical or desirable. Whether youdo or don’t have allergies, try these steps tominimize exposure to irritants and toxins on“bad air days:”• When exercising outdoors, avoid high-traffic roads• Walk instead of running• Try to exercise in the morning orevening, when pollen counts are lower• Avoid outdoor exertion between 4-6p.m., when ozone levels are highest• On high ozone level days, limit time outdoorsIf you have asthma or extreme allergies, ask your healthcare professional formore suggestions. One more tip can help anyonewho wants to reduce the impactof toxins on their health andwell-being: drink Nopalea™,the astonishing new wellnessdrink. Packed with rare, powerfulantioxidants called Betalains,Nopalea is formulated to help thebody cleanse itself of toxins andfight inflammation (see page 10).THE TOXIC TRUTH:Havinga badair day?

Both the US and Canada have becomenations of overweight – and downright obese– people. Statistics from 1985 show that lessthan 10% of the populations of New York andCalifornia were considered obese. That numberjumped all the way to 24% in 2001.Obesity clearly plays a big role in many diseases, ranging from cardiovascular disease to cancer.Obesity definitely impacts the epidemic ofdiabetes. For example, the obesity rates inMississippi climbed from 10% to over 25%during the 1990s. Rates of type 2 diabetes alsoclimbed from 6 percent to over 10 percentduring the same time period. Now, several studies have indicated that obesitycan weaken the body’s immune system andreduce its ability to fight off infections. In one experiment at Boston University, researchers infected obese mice with bacteriawhich cause gum disease. They found thatcompared with lean mice, the obese miceshowed a 40% greater increase in tooth decayand lost bone just 10 days after being infected.Researchers also found that the obese mice hadmore bacteria around their gums, compared withlean mice, concluding that this was because theywere unable to mount a proper immune attackon the “bugs.” The bacteria could linger in themouth and cause more damage.According to researchers at the HarvardSchool of Public Health, obesity is essentiallyan inflammatory disease. They discovered thatexcess calories affect fat cells in such a waythat they mount an immune response. Byconstantly activating the immune system ata low level, chemicals are released that helpcontribute to inflammation.Researchers also found that obesity causesstress, which alerts the immune system, whichthen leads to inflammation. This inflammationmay eventually result in high levels of fattyacids and glucose in the blood. The obesity/cancer connectionIn 2001, experts concluded that cancers of thecolon, breast (postmenopausal), endometrium(the lining of the uterus), kidney and esophagusare associated with obesity. Some studies havealso reported links between obesity and cancersof the gallbladder, ovaries and pancreas.Preventing weight gain can help reduce therisk of many cancers. Experts recommendthat people establish habits of healthy eatingand physical activity early in life to preventoverweight and obesity. Those who are alreadyoverweight or obese are advised to avoidadditional weight gain, and to lose weightthrough a low-calorie diet and exercise. Evena weight loss of only 5 to 10% of total weightcan provide health benefits. How obesity weakensthe immune systemexcess pounds can increase risk for diabetes, cancer andmany other diseases
trivita.com14 l VITAJOURNAL Celebrating 10 Years of Health and WellnessSure, Nopalea™ tastesgreat and it offersmany astonishingbenefits. However, youmay not know about oneof Nopalea’s very special“secrets.” This breakthroughwellness drink contains aunique class of nutrientscalled Betalains. Betalains are bioflavonoidsin the Quercetin family. A bioflavonoid is avitamin-like substance that works alongsideantioxidants like Vitamin C. They are usefulin helping us make collagen so our skin looksyoung and in strengthening blood vessels sowe don’t easily bruise. Bioflavonoids help usresist allergies and infections from bacteriaand viruses. They are also anti-inflammatory.How Quercetinshelp fight deadly toxinsQuercetins are found in foods we eat everyday such as apples and onions. They areimportant in medical science because highintake of Quercetin-containing foods resultsin low incidence of cancer and heart disease.Betalains are “grandchildren” of Quercetin. But Betalains are orphans. None of the plantspecies related in their development existanymore; they have all gone extinct exceptbeets, rainbow Swiss chard and Nopal fruit –plants that are not even “distant cousins”in the world of fruits and vegetables. However, all 24 known Betalains are veryimportant for human health. That is especiallytrue today because they are all anti-toxin andanti-inflammatory. Wouldn’t you agree thatour world is becoming more and more toxic?Environmental experts report dramatic increasesin disease-producing toxins in air, water andsoil (see page 12 for more information). Toxinsproduce inflammation, and most of the diseaseswe face start with inflammation: Alzheimer’s,cancer, heart disease, etc.Betalain content develops in response to theenvironment in which the plant grows. Themore extreme the climate, the more protectiveBetalains the plant needs to survive – and themore benefits we get when we eat them! So,while we may get a few precious Betalains frombeets and rainbow Swiss chard, we get thegreatest abundance (all 24!) from the specificNopal fruit found in the Sonoran Desert.Beta xanthine’s key roleOne of the most important Betalains fordetoxification is beta xanthine. Beta xanthineparticipates in detoxification in the liver andkidneys. It makes detoxification much easierfor our body.Human bodies burn food to create energy. This is called metabolism: breaking downthe food in basic components (catabolism)and using those building blocks to buildup our health (anabolism). This makes ushealthy and energetic. However, we mustcontend with toxins along the way, toxinsfrom outside our body (exotoxins from air, water and food) and even toxins createdinside our body (endotoxins). One of theseendotoxins is called uric acid. High levels ofuric acid are poisonous and high levels havebeen associated with heart disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, kidney stones and gout.Uric acid is neutralized in the liver by enzymes.Interestingly, the same liver enzymes thatdetoxify uric acid may also detoxify many otherpoisons. So, improving liver detoxification ofuric acid with the help of Betalain beta xanthinemay improve your ability to detoxify many otherpoisons. It’s like getting a bonus every time youdrink Nopalea! You will not be able to complete this detoxi-fication process entirely if your liver is “fatty,”sluggish or toxic.Uric acid is excreted by the kidneys. Thekidneys are easily damaged by dehydration, toomuch protein or sugar in your diet, toxic metalslike mercury or other toxins like aspirin. Infact, the kidneys are so delicate that they caneven be damaged by temperature extremes inour environment – especially heat.Beta xanthine helps protect the liver andkidneys by neutralizing toxins such as uricacid, by increasing liver detoxificationenzymes that clean up both exotoxins andendotoxins and may even reduce the shockour kidneys face from excess heat.Betalains, including beta xanthine, are anti-inflammatory and anti-toxin – just what weneed in a toxic, inflamed world! And justlike their grandfather Quercetin, Betalainsare beneficial for improving our health anddaily performance. Beta xanthine takes itsplace among all of the health-promotingbioflavonoids as an antioxidant thatharmonizes with all of the other beneficialnutrients that are truly gifts to us from theSonoran Desert.See the story on page 10 for more informationabout Nopalea. The secret of Nopalea’sAMAZINGBETALAINSthese powerful and protective “healing”nutrients are essential to detoxificationby Brazos Minshew, TriVita Chief Science OfficerBrazos MinshewWe get the greatestabundance (all 24!)from the specific Nopalfruit found in theSonoran Desert.
How many of your friends suffer frominflammation? Not just the kind thatcomes with a sore throat or swollenfinger, but the inflammation that’s causingan explosion in asthma, allergies, digestiveproblems, insomnia, autoimmune disordersand other reactions around the world? Moreimportant, what are some possible answers tothe problem of inflammation?Forming histaminesHumans have been exposed to pollen since wefirst walked the earth. It is the same with foodsthat trigger allergies in many people. Yet, thesensitivity to pollens and all other proteins isincreasing, it seems, almost daily. Since people, pollens and proteins have peacefully coexistedfor many generations, the problem must besomething new in our environment that iscausing us to become more inflamed. Potentialcauses of the increase in autoimmune disorderscould include:• The toxins in our environment• The emotional distress we endure daily• Deficiency in vital elements such asnutrients and sleep• The damage of a sedentary lifeEach of these sources of stress has been implicatedin the release of inflammatory histamines inour body. Histamines form more readily in aB-12 deficient environment because B-12 blocksTHF – an enzyme that creates histamine. Oncehistamines are released into your system theyare extremely inflammatory. Nopalea™ quenchesinflammation through anti-inflammatory Betalains.Histamine disordersWe probably only think of hay fever when wethink of histamine: itchy, watery eyes, sneezing, difficulty breathing, etc. These are allergysymptoms connected with histamine releaseon an “H-1” receptor in the upper airways. Yet,histamines are released on 4 different receptors:H-1 in the airways• Allergic rhinitis (hay fever), asthma, watery eyes, scratchy throat, bronchitis.H-2 in the digestive system• Acid indigestion, gastric reflux, irritablebowel syndrome, colitis.H-3 in the brain• Insomnia, anxiety, depression, attentiondeficit disorder, bipolar disorder, Alzheimer’s.H-4 in the immune system• Rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia.Histamines are inflammatory. They start a firein one or more of these body systems and weproduce symptoms. The fire’s origination maybe determined because of heredity, environmentand lifestyle. The “match” that ignites thefirestorm may be pollens or proteins, toxicpoisons or healthy foods or just about anythingyou can imagine. In the end, the inflammationis always caused by histamines! The dynamic duoAs I mentioned, Sublingual B-12 protects againstmuch of the excess histamine formation byblocking the enzyme THF. This is especiallytrue of TriVita® Super Sublingual B-12 becauseit contains three milligrams of both biologicallyactive forms of B-12. Once histamine is released,it creates inflammation that actually feeds onitself in a storm of irritation. Nopalea helps breakthe cycle of inflammation and anti-inflammatoryBetalains help quench the firestorm. So pollens are not inherently “bad” andproteins in foods are not either; though, I mustadmit that sometimes they seem that way! Incombating inflammation we may benefit froma simple two-step approach: We need to isolateourselves from the allergen until our immunesystem can be reprogrammed and insulateourselves with proper nutrients and nurturingevery single day. Insulation begins with B-12and Nopalea. Please see the articles onpages 6 and 10 to find outmore about Sublingual B-12and Nopalea.1-800-991-7116 November 2009 l 15INFLAMMATION: scourge of our timetriVita Sublingual B-12 and nopalea pack a powerful anti-inflammatory 1-2 punchby Brazos Minshew, TriVita Chief Science OfficerSUCCESS STORIES“Taking TriVita’s Super B-12 alongwith Nopalea is a great combination.”“I got started with Nopalea early last monthand already feel so much better. Iwas sitting at thetable in my break-fast nook workingon my computercalendar, organizingthe upcoming holidayseason. I always hostthe Thanksgiving feastat my house so I knew that that was agiven. I entered the information – done. The holiday season from Thanksgiving throughthe New Year is, for me and so many others, a funtime of the year filled with parties, celebrationsand social gatherings with family and friends.Once my holiday organizing was done, though,my mind quickly turned to all of the challengespeople face during the holidays. I thought itwould be appropriate to offer some tips on howto cope with the added stress and for some, theburden of depression.Research studies have indicated that thereare three key trigger points of holiday stressand depression. Money. Keep track of your holidayspending. Overspending can lead todepression when the bills arrive afterthe holidays are over. Relationships. Even though theholidays can be stressful, try to rememberthat these people (for the most part) trulylove you and want to see you happy. Demands. With all of the physicaldemands of the season, take time toeat right, take your nutritional supple-ments, drink plenty of water and getample exercise and sleep to manageholiday fatigue. With the following practical tips, you canminimize the stress and depression that oftenaccompany the holidays.Quick tips for coping with holidaystress and depression• Make realistic expectations for theholiday season. Don’t expect to have a“Hallmark” moment. If you do, great. If you don’t, it’s okay.• Set realistic goals for yourself.Learn to just say “no.”• Make a list and prioritize the importantactivities. Pace yourself. This can helpmake holiday tasks more manageable.• Live “in the moment” and enjoythe present.• If you are lonely, try volunteeringsome of your time to help others.• Find holiday activities that are free, such as looking at holiday decorations, going window-shopping without buying, and observing the winter weather, whether it’s a snowflake or a raindrop.• Limit your consumption of alcohol, since excessive drinking will onlyincrease your feelings of depression.• Spend time with supportive andcaring people. Meet new people.• Let others share the responsibilitiesof holiday tasks.• Make time for yourself! Be selfish,if only for a few moments.Holidays can sometimes trigger depression. They can be especially hard if you are alreadydealing with the death of a loved one or thebreakup of a relationship. You may feelembarrassed to ask for help, but do talk withyour doctor about the options available fordealing with depression.I don’t know about you, but just knowing thatthe holidays can trigger stress and depressionis a big key for me to help minimize them. “But what happenswhen we live God’sway? He brings giftsinto our lives, muchthe same way thatfruit appears in anorchard; things likeaffection for others, exuberance about life, serenity.”– Galatians 5:22The response to last month’s column was sostrong, I’m pleased to welcome back Pastor JudithCrist. Here, she continues to share her perspec-tives on spirituality, and how the spiritual lifecan be different for women and men.Judith Crist has servedalongside her husband, Dr.Terry Crist, as one of theExecutive Pastors of City ofGrace Church in Arizonasince it was founded. Herpassion is to see peoplediscover and live theabundant life found in JesusChrist. Judith majored inmusic, ministry and Biblical studies at JacksonCollege of Ministries in Jackson, MS.Chaplain Gene: Last month, we talked aboutwomen’s spiritual health. Do you think thatwomen are more spiritually inclined than men?Pastor Judith: Wow, although that couldbe a touchy subject, I do not think that is auniversal truth. I do think, however, thatwomen express what they perceive spirituallymore often, and with deep feeling comparedto men, and many times this is mistaken forgreater spirituality.Men more often express their spiritualperceptions in terms of what they think, while women speak of what they feel. I dothink that men perceive and communicatedifferently than women. Unfortunately, manymen might think that a woman is morespiritual than they are because she “feels.”Throughout the entire Bible, God interactswith men in spiritual ways.Chaplain Gene: As a female pastor, doyou think your messages are received by womenand men differently?Pastor Judith: Many times, yes. Manymen seem to appreciate concepts based onprinciples that cause them to think, withoutfeeling as if they are being “scolded.” Women,on the other hand, tend to respond a bit moreto intuitive instruction and expressive emotionswhile still being anchored in sound principle. That said, I think that both men and womenneed to cultivate sensitivity to the spiritualaspects of life. We should all be spiritually free tomentally and emotionally connect with the Lord.Chaplain Gene: When men or womenlose their spiritual “balance,” what do you seeas the solution?Pastor Judith: It’s true that if ourspirituality has been shaken, confusion canset in. As I mentioned last month, we canfind peace in the midst of storms in our livesby daily prayer, and aligning ourselves withGod’s perspective through His word.Specifically, our spirit can be strengthened bymentally rehearsing the truth about God,about ourselves and our purpose on the earth. As Galatians 5:22 promises, the fruit of theHoly Spirit in our life is good emotions suchas love, joy, peace. When we get back into alignment with God’swill and our purpose here on earth, we willfind that hopelessness, bitterness and selfishsurvival habits will loosen their hold on us;then we can be a better influence on othersaround us.I would strongly encourage both men andwomen to use all the resources of God’s grace, such as forgiveness, repentance, a gratefulattitude and speaking the truth with love. These are life-giving “skill sets” which willcontribute to the building up, rather thanthe tearing down, of our social networks.Women’s spiritual health: Part IIby Chaplain Gene HendersonGene HendersonJudith Crist1-800-991-7116 November 2009 l 19your body, His Temple – 1 Cor. 6:19-20“I think that both men andwomen need to cultivatesensitivity to the spiritualaspects of life.”

In the study, 42 rats were initially given a standard diet with a fat content of 7.5%.Baselines were established for how long they could run on a treadmill and how they performed on a maze taskthat tested memory.Half the rats were switched to a diet with a 55% fat content. After five days, the tests were administered again;those rats on the high-fat diet were running 30% less than those on the regular diet, and by day nine, wererunning 50% less. The high-fat group also made more mistakes in the maze tests. Additionally, they hadsignificantly larger hearts after nine days.Several research teams are now conducting similar studies in humans.“We look forward to the results of the equivalent studies in human volunteers, which should tell us more aboutthe short-term effects of high-fat foods on our hearts,” said Professor Jeremy Pearson, Associate Medical Directorof the British Heart Foundation, who funded the research. “We already know that to protect our heart healthin the long-term, we should cut down on foods high in saturated fat.”Vitamin C may reduce the risk of goutVancouver, CanadaMen who supplement with Vitamin C have a lower risk of gout (a type of inflammatory arthritis), according toresearchers in a recent edition of the Archives of Internal Medicine. In the study, 46,994 men were followed from 1986-2006; they were given questionnaires every four years todetermine their Vitamin C intake. After 20 years, 1,317 cases of gout were confirmed. Compared to men who tookless than 250 milligrams (mg) of Vitamin C per day, those who took 500 to 999 mg had a 17% lower risk of gout;1,000 to 1,499 mg per day averaged a 34% reduced risk; 1,500 mg per day and higher had a 45% lower risk.Researchers concluded that higher Vitamin C intake is independently associated with a lower risk of gout, andsupplemental Vitamin C intake may be beneficial in protection against gout.Healthcare costs growing with waistlinesRockville, MarylandA new report from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality shows that between 2001 and 2006, totalhealthcare expenditures for U.S. adults in the obese category increased from $166.7 billion to $303.1 billion – anincrease of over 80%.The adult obese population increased as well, from 23.6% to 27.2%. Q: What is the House of Giving?A: The House of Giving is a charitablenon-profit organization founded by theleadership of TriVita to help people in crisis.Q: Why was the House ofGiving founded?A: The primary purpose for founding theHouse of Giving was to help people in need. There are millions of people impacted byfamine, floods, polluted water and domestic, national and civil violence. We believed thatTriVita would become a successful companyand wanted to share our good fortune withless fortunate people. I also believed ouremployees and Members would want to makea real difference in people’s lives. Ouremployees have donated thousands of hoursat a shelter for victims of domestic violence.Plus, each year at Christmas they bring giftsfor the children. I am extremely proud oftheir thoughtfulness and generosity.Q: Is this a charitable organizationowned by TriVita?A: No, the House of Giving isn’t owned byTriVita or any other organization but is anindependent charitable organization in theU.S. and Canada.Q: Does an independent boardoversee the House of Giving?A: Yes, it is run by an independent board thatprovides oversight to the organization. Thereare six board members in the U.S. and threeboard members in Canada.Q: Is the House of Giving registeredwith the IRS in the U.S. and theDepartment of Revenue of Canada?A: Yes, it is registered as a 501.C3 charitableorganization in the U.S. and as a charitableorganization in Canada; all donations arefully tax deductible in both countries.Q: What special projects have youselected for the upcoming year?A: Our goal is to provide clean-water wellsin areas where waterborne diseases runrampant. Many of these areas in developingcountries have polluted above-ground watersources – which creates disease for thosewho drink from them.Q: Why did you select water wellsas your project?A: Because access to clean water is essentialto good health. For the amount of moneywe have raised, we are able to deliver in asignificant way. Many of these wells providewater to large groups of people; some communitywells serve thousands of people. Now instead oflooking for surface water carrying diseases likecholera, trachoma, hepatitis and other disablingdiseases, they can go to a clean-water well. Nolonger does their water result in blindness, stunted growth or intestinal viruses that canleave them in a severe malnourished state oreven result in death.Q: Can a Member donate to theHouse of Giving?A: Yes, a Member can join in our waterproject by either making a check out directlyto House of Giving or by asking a WellnessConsultant to add a charitable donation totheir TriVita order. The House of Givingoffers a special designation: 100% of donatedmoney goes toward the project. No administra-tion costs are taken out of donations.Q: How is that possible when allorganizations have operating costs?A: The House of Giving has all volunteerhelp from both the board members who serveand from those who oversee daily operations.Any other costs are covered by the EllisonFamily Trust and TriVita to ensure 100% ofdonations go to the designated project. We arecommitted to helping those less fortunate andto ensuring our gifts make a significant impactin helping people in their time of crisis. My most recent surgery forbulging disks was especially difficult and Ineeded a walker just to move around. Now, fast forward to last June when I attendeda Nopalea presentation. I heard some amazingstories about peoples’ success with Nopalea. Theywere so amazing that I was hard-pressed to believethem. However, I have a medical background andI’m open-minded enough to recognize the valueof natural medicine. So I went home that night anddecided to try Nopalea. After the first day I noticeda small change. Within two days I had no pain in myleg or my knees. I was able to take the stairs to myoffice and I actually did it – pain free! My body cantell when I haven’t had Nopalea for a while. So I gofor more Nopalea and almost immediately my hipfeels better. I can’t explain it – and don’t really needto. Healso has two sons who compete inthe rodeo’s youth and teen circuits.J.B.’s ride to the top was never easy. He hasfreed himself from a life of drinking anddrugs... and is feeling really good about it.“I just quit it all and have never looked backor thought twice about going back to thatlife,” he remarks. “I’m not ashamed about it;I just try to set a good example for my boysand others who know me.”Nopalea’s incrediblehealing qualitiesJ.B.’s mom, Dorothy, thought he would be anexcellent candidate for Nopalea because of hismany rodeo-related aches and pains. I was not only feeling pretty good, but I was able to compete in the rodeo just afew days after my injury.” He has also noticedthat since taking Nopalea he is sleeping muchbetter and without interruption.Dorothy’s equally remarkable storyDorothy has gone through her own trials andtribulations.
