  2. 2. An Important Message for WomenTake care of yourself firstby michael r. ellison, ceO & founder of TriVita, inc.Let me continue the theme of women’s health which Iintroduced in the October catalog. When it comes tonurturing, I encourage all women to embrace the “mefirst” rule. I know that may be hard to accept becausemothers tend to put the needs of their children first. Thisnurturing instinct begins when that firstborn arrives inyour arms for the first time. Being an outdoor lover, Ihave encountered the instincts of a mother bear withcubs, and that will put the punctuation on the thoughtthat a mother’s instinct is to care for her children withouteven thinking about her own well-being.But, at some point in life, there has to be an understanding and acceptance that only when awoman nurtures herself can she sustain long-term nurturing of others. In our world of demands, there are not many who are taking personal responsibility to ensure that they are nurtured forgreat health and well-being. You must attend to your needs yourself.Just to prime the pump of thought a little more on this subject: Would you want to fly witha pilot who cared much for his passengers, but cared little for his own health and mentalalertness? If you had a surgeon who cared for his patients but cared little about himself andlacked the proper rest and nutritional support for mental alertness and stable hands, wouldyou want him to perform surgery on you?Caring for oneself must be the top priority in life so that you can lead a long life filled withwellness and can contribute to the lives of others. Why is it easier to think of caring for otherswhether in the home or on the job than it is to care for oneself? At TriVita®, we believe the 10Essentials for Health and Wellness must lead and guide the lives of both women and men. Theycover the spectrum of essentials which can help you create wellness for your life. One of ouressentials is to eat a nutrient-rich diet. To aid you in your targeted nutrition, we have developedwonderful, science-based products that are highly absorbable and will help your body keep you well. Now in our 60s, my wife Susan and I have dreams of doing much around the world, andwe know that only if we have wellness, will we see our dreams fulfilled. We depend on theproducts of TriVita for all our nutritional supplement support. We have both had amazingresults overcoming health challenges with TriVita products. When we traveled across NorthAmerica introducing Nopalea™, many women wanted to know what Susan takes and thedosages she has adopted as a daily regimen. Here is her own testimony of how she nurturesherself and supports her wellness program:“When Michael asked me if I wanted to share in this month’s VitaJournal, I jumped at the chance,as it is dedicated to women’s health. I am very passionate about women being proactive about theirhealth. I have a couple of exciting things in my own life I would like to share with you.Like many women, I was diagnosed with osteopenia, which is the beginning of bone loss and can leadto serious health issues if not treated. In my own life,I lost my grandmother, aunt and cousin, all on mymother’s side, to breast cancer. I’ve also lost myfather and brother to heart disease. Knowing thisstrong history is in my family gives me more thanenough reason to do my part in helping preventa devastating illness from attacking my life. I amextremely timely in my annual well-woman exams, mammograms and bone density tests, as well as anyother testing that is required as we age. I feel veryblessed with my good health, and am very happywith this stage of my life. I do know, however, that I must nourish my body and treat it properly. My favorite regimen involves my hormonehealth. I’ve found the magic formula that worksfor me in helping to prevent hot flashes and nightsweats is two TriVita OmegaPrime® soft gels andtwo Balanced Woman® capsules three times aday along with one Vitamin E soft gel once a day. This combination works great for me, and I cantell when I miss a few days. Recently at a well-woman exam, my doctor tried to convince methat even though my hormone levels were still ok,I should consider going on hormone replacementtherapy. After I chimed in with what I take dailyto keep my hormones balanced, she stopped andsaid “OK, never mind – maybe I should take whatyou’re taking!”Since we are physical, emotional and spiritualbeings – it is crucial that we nourish each area. You might remember our interview back in theMay VitaJournal with Pastor Judith Crist. It is mademostly of collagen, aprotein that providesa soft framework, andcalcium phosphate, a mineral that addsstrength and hardens the framework. This combination of collagen andcalcium makes bone strong yet flexibleenough to handle stress.Throughout our lifetime, old bone is removed(resorption) and new bone is added to theskeleton (formation). During childhoodand teenage years, new bone is added fasterthan old bone is removed. As a result, bonesbecome larger, heavier and denser. Boneformation continues at a pace faster thanresorption until peak bone mass (maximumbone density and strength) is reached, usuallybefore age 30.After age 30, bone resorption slowly beginsto exceed bone formation. In women, boneloss for women is most rapid in the first fewyears after menopause but persists into thepostmenopausal years. Osteoporosis (the weakbone disease) develops when bone resorptionoccurs too quickly or if replacement occurs tooslowly. Osteoporosis is more likely to developif you did not reach optimal bone mass duringyour bone-building years.Risk factorsCertain risk factors are linked to thedevelopment of osteoporosis or contributeto an individual’s likelihood of developingthe disease. Many people with osteoporosishave several of these risk factors, but otherswho develop osteoporosis have no identifiedrisk factors. There are some risk factors thatyou cannot change, and others that you can.Risk factors you cannot change:• Ethnicity – Caucasian and Asianwomen are at greatest risk. African-American and Latino women have alower, but significant risk.• Gender – Your chances of developingosteoporosis are greater if you are aBrazos MinshewTriVita Bone Builder helps avoidfractures from weakened bones• Clinically proven to rebuild bone• Physician-approved formula• Highly-absorbable calciumSimply put: Female study participants gainedan average of 6% bone mass after taking TriVitaBone Builder for three to six months. 5. 5. 1-800-991-7116 October 2009 l 5woman. Women have less bone tissue andlose bone more rapidly than men becauseof the changes involved in menopause.• Age – The older you are, the greater yourrisk of osteoporosis. Your bones becomeless dense and weaker as you age.• Body size – Small, thin-boned womenare at greater risk.• Family history – Susceptibility tofracture may be, in part, hereditary.People whose parents have a history offractures also seem to have reduced bonemass and may be at risk for fractures.Risk factors you can change:• Sex hormones – Abnormal absenceof menstrual periods (amenorrhea),low estrogen level (menopause) andlow testosterone level in men.• Get help for anorexia.• A lifetime diet low in calciumand Vitamin D.• Use of certain medications, such asglucocorticoids or some anticonvulsants. It is important to discuss the use ofthese drugs with your physician, andnot to stop or alter your medicationdose on your own.• An inactive lifestyle or extended bed rest.• Stop smoking cigarettes anddrinking soft drinks.• Excessive use of alcohol.PreventionTo reach optimal peak bone mass and continuebuilding new bone tissue as you get older, thereare several factors you should consider:Calcium. Calcium needs change duringone’s lifetime. The body’s demand for calciumis greater during childhood and adolescence, when the skeleton is growing rapidly, and duringpregnancy and breastfeeding. Postmenopausalwomen and older men also need to consumemore calcium. This may be due to inadequateamounts of Vitamin D, which is necessary forintestinal absorption of calcium. Also, as weage, our bodies become less efficient at absorbingcalcium and other nutrients. Older adultsalso are more likely to have chronic medicalproblems and to use medications that mayimpair calcium absorption. See recommendedcalcium intakes listed at right.Vitamin D. Vitamin D plays an importantrole in calcium absorption and in bone health. It is synthesized in the skin through exposureto sunlight. While many people are able toobtain enough Vitamin D naturally, studiesshow that Vitamin D production decreasesin the elderly, in people who are houseboundand during the winter. These individualsmay require Vitamin D supplementation toensure a daily intake of between 400 to 1000International Units of Vitamin D.Exercise. Like muscle, bone is living tissuethat responds to exercise by becoming stronger. The best exercise for your bones is weight-bearing exercise that forces you to work againstgravity. These exercises include walking, hiking, jogging, stair-climbing, weight training, tennisand dancing.DetectionOsteoporosis is often called the “silent disease”because bone loss occurs without symptoms.Following a comprehensive medical assessment, your doctor may recommend that you have yourbone mass measured. Bone mineral density (BMD)tests measure bone density in the spine, wristand/or hip (the most common sites of fractures dueto osteoporosis), while others measure bone in theheel or hand. These tests are painless, non-invasiveand safe. Bone density tests can:• Detect low bone density before afracture occurs.• Confirm a diagnosis of osteoporosisif you have already fractured.• Predict your chances of fracturingin the future.• Determine your rate of bone loss and/ormonitor the effects of treatment if the testis conducted at intervals of a year or more.ConclusionAn inadequate supply of calcium over a life-time is thought to play a significant role incontributing to the development of osteoporosis.National nutrition surveys have shown thatmany people consume less than half the amountof calcium recommended to build and maintainhealthy bones. Good sources of calcium include:• Low fat dairy products, such as milk, yogurt, cheese and ice cream• Dark green, leafy vegetables, such asbroccoli and collard greens• Bok choy and spinach• Sardines and salmon with bones• Tofu• Almonds• Calcium-fortified foods, such as orangejuice, cereals and breadsDepending upon how much calcium you geteach day from food, you may need to take acalcium supplement. Recommended Calcium Intakes*Ages Milligrams per/dayBirth - 6 months 2106 months - 1 year 2701 - 3 5004 - 8 8009 - 13 130014 - 18 130019 - 30 100031 - 50 100051 - 70 120070 and over 1200*Source: Health Library
  6. 6. trivita.com6 l VITAJOURNAL Celebrating 10 Years of Health and WellnessScott Conard, M.D., is the founder of TienaHealth,an organization of medical doctors in primarycare practice who emphasize healthy lifestylesto maintain wellness. Dr. Conard is considereda national expert on disease prevention.TienaHealth also conducts clinical trials.Scott Conard, M.D.Founder, TienaHealthHow are you? It’s such asimple question, yet itcan cover so many aspectsof health, both emotional andphysical. As we at TriVita®celebrate women’s health thismonth, I’d like to look at some ofthe emotional aspects of health, hormones and Vitamin B-12.We know that all living things have cycles, and men as well as women are subject tofluctuations in hormones and emotions. For women especially, though, the ebband flow of hormones before, during andafter menopause can have real, troublesomeemotional symptoms. These can includefeelings of sadness, irritability and anger, fatigue and mood swings. In some cases, I’dsay that the problem may be at least partlydue to a B-12 deficiency. (Of course, yourown healthcare professional is the best sourcefor medical guidance.)B-12 and mood:a strong connectionThanks to rigorous studies by my colleaguesin medical research, we know that peoplewho have a B-12 deficiency can suffer froma range of emotional/mental symptoms, including mood swings, mental confusionand forgetfulness. That’s why one of the firstthings I do when people complain of theseproblems is make sure they are getting enoughof the essential vitamins like B-12.If you’re over 40, a strict vegetarian, or havethyroid, liver or kidney problems, you’re atrisk for B-12 deficiency. As we age, our bodiesmay become less able to absorb some vitaminsefficiently, especially in the case of VitaminB-12. Without enough B-12, other vitaminslike folate and B-6 cannot function normallywithin the body.Youth is no protector againstB-12 deficiencyIt’s important to note that older adultsaren’t the only ones who are at risk of B-12deficiencies. While it’s true that the body’sability to absorb B vitamins from fooddecreases with age, younger people can bedeficient, too. One study looked at three agegroups, ages 26 to 65 plus, and found thata consistent number of people in all threegroups had B-12 deficiencies. Even moreinteresting: Regardless of age, those whodidn’t take a B-12 supplement were twice aslikely to be B-12 deficient as those who did.So even if you’re a woman years away frommenopause, it’s possible that you’re notgetting enough B-12. Because of the knownlink between B-12 and mood, it’s also possiblethat this gap is worsening symptoms of fluctu-ating hormones. If you or someone in your life is strugglingwith mood issues, low energy and relatedsymptoms, I urge you to consider makinghealthy changes. It’s important to exercise, eatright and do all you can to promote your ownphysical and emotional health. 8. 8. trivita.com8 l VITAJOURNAL Celebrating 10 Years of Health and WellnessTriVita’sBone Buildercontains aunique family ofingredients called BoneGrowth Factor (BGF).These additionalingredients are likea formula within a formula. BGFaddresses the disparity between howmuch bone you lose and how much youmake every day. How does it work?Bone cells have a specific life span. When theirlife is over they die. Cells called osteoclasts teardown dead bone and recycle the minerals foruse in the next generation of bone cells. Thishappens every single day of our lives. How your body changes after age 30When we are young, the amount of bone wemake exceeds the amount we lose. Cells calledosteoblasts “blast” out new bone at an amazingrate. All we have to do is give the osteoblastsenough fuel in the form of nutrients and theydo their job of making bone. After about age 30,the building-up work of osteoblasts is outpacedby the tearing-down work of osteoclasts.Collagen and minerals are leached from ourbones in a sort of “deficit spending” routine thatmay leave us with porous bones – osteoporosis.Normally there are enough osteoblasts andosteoclasts in your bones to keep them healthy. The failure of osteoblasts to “blast” out enoughbone to keep up with the loss of bone cells ismainly because of two deficiencies: notenough nutrients and not enough signalinghormones. These signaling hormones tell theosteoblast to pack the bone crystals tightlyfor lasting strength.Collagen’s essential role inbone healthWe think of bones as mostly calcium. That’strue to an extent; the main mineral in bonesis calcium. But more calcium is not the onlyanswer to building healthy bones. In fact, Ilike to say that calcium is really just a dumbrock. Collagen (the same thing that keepsyour skin young and healthy) organizes calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, boron and manyother minerals into crystals that providecompression strength to your bones. Further, collagen provides tensile strength to bonesthat allows you to bend and stretch, danceand even fall without injury.Collagen is the brains and calcium is the brawnin healthy bones.Bone Builder’s key ingredientsTriVita’s Bone Builder contains all of theminerals required for building healthy bones. It also contains all of the collagen neededfor “blasting” out new bone matrix. Further,TriVita’s Bone Builder contains Bone GrowthFactor (BGF). These ingredients signal theosteoblast that it is time to make new bone. They tell the bone cells that they are youngagain and that they need to bulk up for a longand healthy life. Ipriflavone, a plant hormonefound in legumes and red clover, tells theosteoblast to make new bone during the day.5-Methoxy-tryptamine (related to melatonin)tells the osteoblast to make new bone duringthe night. Boron, a mineral but also a signalinghormone, tells the osteoblast to pack the bonecrystals tightly for lasting strength. An interesting point about human growthhormone (HgH) and bone cells: HgH is turneddown and then completely turned off by stresshormones associated with fight or flight or bydepression hormones. It seems that muscles, bones, organs and even brain cells prefer to livein a stress-free environment!Bone Growth Factor contains the proteinGABA (gamma amino butyric acid). This is the“anti-stress” amino acid found in abundancein a relaxed brain. It is also found in the bonesof people when they are stress-free. We addedGABA to Bone Growth Factor to send amessage of tranquility to both bone and brain.TriVita’s Bone Builder also contains Vitamin Dwhich is both a vitamin and a signaling hormone. This important nutrient is needed for bonehealth, heart health, a healthy immune systemand healthy blood sugar. At one time we wereconvinced that 400 IU of Vitamin D was enoughto keep us healthy. Recent science tells us that weneed more – much more – if we are to resist thebone erosion common after age 30. So, we added1,000 IU of Vitamin D to make sure people over30 get enough of this important nutrient.Healthy bones last a lifetime. TriVita’s BoneBuilder with Bone Growth Factor can helpsupply the nutrients your body needs to blastout new bone every active, healthy day ofyour life! Enjoy a lifetimeof healthy bonesAll the bone-nourishing ingredients you needBrazos MinshewBy Brazos Minshew, TriVita Chief Science OfficerWhen we are young, the amountof bone we make exceeds theamount we lose.Collagen is the brains and calciumis the brawn in healthy bones.See the ad on page 4for more information aboutTriVita’s Bone Builder.

  10. 10. trivita.com10 l VITAJOURNAL Celebrating 10 Years of Health and WellnessThree little letters may behaving a big impact on the#1 disease threat to women:heart disease. The letters are “CRP,”and they stand for a protein found inthe blood called C-reactive protein. If emerging science stays on trackwith CRP, it could become as wellknown as cholesterol in the battlefor keeping hearts healthy. The big deal about CRP is that it’s a markerfor inflammation. What’s the big deal aboutinflammation? More and more, it’s linked withthe risk of heart disease. Like cholesterol, acertain amount of inflammation is natural andgood: it’s how the body repairs itself after aninjury, as when you cut your finger and it healswithin days. But chronic inflammation, whenthe body gets “stuck” in this repair process, isthought to be the problem behind a growingnumber of ailments. So if chronic inflammation can be controlledor reduced, it appears that the outlook formanaging heart disease, especially for women, could be bright. This makes Nopalea™, thebreakthrough wellness drink that fightsinflammation, even more important toeveryone committed to their own health.Female fatalities tiedto high CRP levelsImportant research in recent years indicates thathigh levels of CRP are linked with high levelsof risk for heart disease. In fact, it seems thathigh levels of CRP are even more accurate thancholesterol levels in predicting heart troubles. The Physicians Health Study, an ongoing,25-year clinical trial involving 18,000 supposedlyhealthy doctors, was the first major study toshow this link. It revealed that high CRP levelstripled the risk of heart attack.Another major study, the Harvard Women’sHealth Study concluded in 2005, built an evenstronger case about CRP, heart disease risk andwomen. Almost 40,000 healthy women age 45and over were studied for three years to monitor12 different markers of inflammation. One of themain results: CRP was the leading indicator ofheart disease risk. In the group with the highestCRP levels, the women were over four timesmore likely to have died from heart disease, orhad a heart attack or stroke, than those in lowerCRP groups.CRP and inflammationgaining attentionThe importance of CRP in heart health isgaining recognition and attention. While itisn’t yet a standard part of wellness exams, a testfor CRP (called High-Sensitivity C-ReactiveProtein, or “hs-CRP” test) is recognized asnecessary in some cases. The prestigious National Heart, Lung andBlood Institute, part of the National Institutesof Health, notes that “Doctors use standard CRPtests to check for inflammation and autoimmunedisease. Your doctor may order an hs-CRP test, along with other tests, to see whether you’reat increased risk for heart disease.” (Be sure tocheck your health insurance coverage if you’reinterested in this test.)When high levels of CRP are detected by anhs-CRP blood test, it signals that the bodyis in a raised state of inflammation. Andas many VitaJournal readers already know, fighting inflammation is a key reason to takeNopalea every day. Its exclusive blend of rareantioxidants, called Betalains, plus otherhealthful nutrients, help the body fight backagainst inflammation. If inflammation is the problem,Nopalea is a solutionMore and more, medical science is zeroing inon inflammation as the culprit behind so manyillnesses and ailments. And the astonishingbenefits that Nopalea is bringing to so manypeople demonstrate how effective it can bein helping the body ease pain, detoxify andprotect against premature aging.“Daily servings of Nopalea can provide youwith the Betalains that help put out the fireof inflammation and rescue cells under attack...”notes Brazos Minshew, TriVita’s Chief ScienceOfficer. “Further,” he adds, “Betalains act toclean up the dead cells and help to protectthem from becoming a target for sickness.”Combating one of the signs of premature aging– wrinkles – may be yet another benefit ofNopalea. “Since Nopalea targets inflammation, aids detoxification and optimizes cell health,”says Minshew, “it can help slow down theprocess of premature aging.” A recent feature oninflammation in a prominent women’s magazinenotes that “...the spots and wrinkles that we allrecognize as aging are the results of the skin’sinflammation response.” When the skin triesto correct against the daily attacks of pollution, stress, too much sun and allergy triggers, thisprotective reaction can end up as skin that lookscreased and splotchy before its time.Compared to the dangers of heart disease, naturally, a few wrinkles are nothing. But thepossible damage that chronic inflammation caninflict on the skin could go far beyond vanity. One noted dermatologist recognized for hisresearch into inflammation has been quoted assaying, “There is a line of thinking that certainkinds of repeated inflammation can create anurturing environment for skin cancers.”Clearly, chronic inflammation and its rolein many illnesses and conditions is worthyof more study. Since then I’d geta burning sensation in myshoulder when it was heldin a certain position, likeholding a cell phone withmy right hand, for example. The longest I could hold acell phone to my ear wouldbe about 30 seconds andthen would come the excruciating, burning painthat would last for a few minutes – until recently. So I have a headset now.My brother Todd and his wife, who introducedme to Nopalea, spent time talking to me aboutNopalea at our recent family reunion. Let me tellyou, what convinced me was how excited mybrother was about the potential of the product. He has never gotten involved in anything likethis, ever. Even so, at the beginning I was a littleskeptical, probably like many others, as I startedtaking Nopalea. While traveling recently (my roommate driving),I called my mom; my headset was dead so Ihand-held the phone with my right hand andduring my conversation with my mom I noticedI had gone past the 30 seconds. So I thought tomyself, ‘Oh my gosh, my shoulder isn’t burningyet,’ so I continued to talk. Fifteen minutes laterthe conversation was ended... I FELT NO PAINAT ALL!! I told my roommate, ‘I just talked for15 minutes with NO pain!’ I was shocked andexcited at the same time. Food prices areexpected to rise (especially healthyfoods), making it more difficult forpeople to eat a healthy diet. Also, depression, anxiety and stress, whichare linked to obesity, are increasing.• Childhood obesity has more thantripled since 1980.• Baby Boomers have higher obesity ratesthan previous generations, which couldsignificantly raise the costs to Medicareand Medicaid.According to the Centers for Disease Controland Prevention National Center for HealthStatistics, more than one-third of U.S. adultswere obese in 2005-2006. I took aPilates class through the communitycollege. It was wonderful: deepbreathing, stretching, corestrengthening. With myweight training, I liftednothing over 15 pounds.I lifted smaller weights, repeating an exercise foran entire minute.I had energy and peoplenoticed! She went onto say, “I feel so bad for my husband, but I justwish he could understand what I go through.”Recognizing the symptomsAfter hearing this same comment made by otherfriends over the years, I thought it would bebeneficial for my male readers to go over some ofthe common symptoms that happen during thetwo primary hormonal cycles of a woman’s life.Premenstrual symptoms (PMS) are defined asphysical or emotional symptoms that precedemenstruation and that are severe enough tointerfere with work or activities. There are atleast 11 premenstrual symptoms that occurduring the two weeks prior to the menstrualcycle. Some of those are:• Feeling tired• Trouble sleeping• Upset stomach and bloating• Headache or backache• Tension• Irritability• Mood swings and crying spellsAs a woman ages, she will go through variousphases leading up to menopause, which has itsown list of over 35 symptoms. Menopause is thecessation of monthly periods. Men, if you thoughtPMS was bad, it would be in your best interest totake a crash course on women’s health concernsduring menopause. Just for starters, here is a listof the most common symptoms:• Memory lapses• Irregular heartbeat• Irritability• Mood swings• Hot flashes• Night sweats• Insomnia• Irregular menstrual periods• Loss of libido (sexual desire)• Vaginal dryness• Sudden fatigue• AnxietyNew research shows that women in earlymenopause report that lack of sleep is theirbiggest problem. In a study conducted by JudithA. Berg, Ph.D., involving 110 women betweenthe ages 43 and 55, the survey showed that94.5% had difficulty sleeping.Understanding is powerI’m sure you’ve heard the statement,“Knowledge is power,” but in the case ofPMS and menopause, “Understanding ispower.” When a man takes the time tounderstand how a woman feels, he has thepower to help himself and his wife cope withthe myriad changes taking place in her body.In fact, one of the best things you can do foryour wife is to put your arm around her and say,“I understand.” Women just want to knowthey’re being heard. Don’t try to “fix” herproblem, just listen to how she feels. 19. 19. “Don’t assume that youknow it all. Run to God!Run from evil! Yourbody will glow withhealth, your very boneswill vibrate with life!”– Proverbs 3: 7-8Since women’s health is the theme of thismonth’s VitaJournal, I’m pleased to welcome backPastor Judith Crist to my column. Her Mother’sDay thoughts on women and virtue in thesepages a few months ago were well-received, andshe returns to give us a woman’s perspective onwomen and spiritual health.Judith Crist has served alongsideher husband, Dr. Terry Crist,as one of the Executive Pastorsof City of Grace Church inArizona since it was founded. Her passion is to see peoplediscover and live the abundantlife found in Jesus Christ. Judithmajored in music, ministryand Biblical studies at JacksonCollege of Ministries in Jackson, MS.Chaplain Gene: Why is spiritual healthimportant to physical health? Does this havespecial meaning for women?Pastor Judith: Spiritual health providesmental stability and emotional freedom. Becausewomen tend to perceive relational undercur-rents, they may carry emotions and thoughtsthat are toxic. This can lead to stress andanxiety and physical deterioration. I recommendspiritual “detox” and cleansing through prayer,as well as what I call “everyday therapy.” Findingwise and trustworthy people to process yourthoughts and emotions with, will give youperspective and aid for your spiritual health.Without others’ perspective, it’s like walkingthrough a dark room and tripping over unseenobjects. Prayer and the counsel of others turnsthe lights on so we can process our innerthoughts and emotions. When we trust God’swisdom, we can enjoy core health physically, emotionally and spiritually.Chaplain Gene: Do you think a person can bephysically healthy without the spiritual element?Pastor Judith: Ultimately, no. Of course, you can focus on diet, exercise and mentalattitude and achieve a level of physical health,BUT – the reason for good physical health is tofulfill our purpose. If you have health withoutspirituality, it is for nothing. An important area about women and spiritualhealth is the idea of influence. Often, if womenthink their choices about health, spirituality, mental and emotional freedom affect onlythemselves, they may not be motivated toimprove. But when we realize that our choicesaffect others, we are motivated to be healthierin all those areas.Chaplain Gene: We know how to work onour physical selves to be in better shape. Is therea way to increase spiritual “fitness” too?Pastor Judith: Yes, by aligning ourselveswith the truth of what God says about Himself, about us and our time here on the Earth. I urgethe women I counsel to study the character ofGod, to read and understand His faithfulness,His promises and His strength toward us. Thishelps us to unclog the pipeline to our sourceof supply: Him.Say to the Lord each day, “Lord, I know I havea limited perspective so I am going to expresswhat I’m thinking and feeling and ask You topurify that and to clarify that through YourWord.” This lets us adjust our thoughts andfeelings and come away with a better perspective.Chaplain Gene: It sounds like you’re sayingthat spiritual, emotional and physical health areall intertwined. True?Pastor Judith: Absolutely. When we talkwith God daily, when we express ourselvesthrough prayer and align ourselves with God’sperspective in our lives, it lets us “re-calibrate”in a spiritual sense. Our emotions and ourhealth will be better, because we make betterchoices when we think better about ourselves.Women matter. Our health matters. We havean opportunity to influence others by choosingto live in confidence in our relationship withGod. And by “Living with the lights on,” wecan show the way to others as well.Editor’s Note: In next month’s VitaJournalChaplain Gene will explore with Pastor Judithhow spiritual life can be different for menand women.your body, His Temple – 1 Cor. 6:19-20Women’s spiritual health:a woman’s perspectiveby Chaplain Gene HendersonGene Henderson1-800-991-7116 October 2009 l 19Judith Crist

The new mini-blinds areperfect; what do you mean, they’re sendingphthalates into the air, and now I’m breathingin hormone-disruptors? Think I’ll head for theoffice; I know it’s professionally cleaned everyday. With what? Products that contain acetone, which can cause seizures and kidney damage?Once you start tuning in to the dangeroussubstances in our daily environments, it canseem there’s nowhere “safe” to turn. But, sinceknowledge is power, you can take action byknowing about the toxins in our world. What’s waiting for you in “Tox Town?”Sadly, environmental toxins are such an estab-lished fact that the U.S. Government offers anintroduction to “toxic chemicals and environmen-tal health risks you might encounter in everydaylife, in everyday places.” It’s called “Tox Town,”(, a service of the NationalLibrary of Medicine to help you identify and learnabout the poisons that inhabit our lives. From home to office to farm, from schools toparks to factories, the site details the substancesin our environments that are known (orsuspected) to be harmful.Home, toxic home?Even the cleanest home can harbor potentialhealth dangers because of building materials usedin its construction, or from ordinary productsused and stored at home. There are toxicmaterials, such as asbestos and lead, poisonousgases like carbon monoxide, and allergy/asthmatriggers in the air, such as mold and dust. Here’s asummary of just some of these hazards:Asbestos: Cancer-causing insulation andfireproofing material that was banned in theU.S. in 1986. It’s found in older homes, inroofing shingles, plumbing insulation andceiling and floor tiles.Lead: Leaded paint chips or dust causechildhood lead poisoning (kidney damage, convulsions, even death). In utensils or dishesthat contain lead, common in some merchandisefrom overseas, repeated exposure for anyone candamage the brain, kidneys and muscles.Carbon monoxide: Highly poisonous, thisgas lacks color, odor and taste. Exposure comesfrom motor vehicle exhausts, gasoline-poweredtools and tobacco smoke. Results: dizziness, unconsciousness, coma and death.Radon: Radioactive gas formed naturally, itenters buildings through rocks and soil and maycause lung cancer.Office hazardsLike our homes, offices are familiar places thatwe may assume are safe, but which can posehealth dangers. Poor indoor air and potentiallyharmful chemicals are among the hazards thathave been documented. Some examples:Indoor air: You may be breathing in fumesor tiny particles from cleaning supplies, construction products, building materials andcopying and printing machines. Potential results:allergies, asthma and breathing problems.Chemicals: Some pesticides are known tocause cancer, disrupt hormones or irritate skinand eyes. Skin problems or allergies can resultfrom handling office supplies and products, aswell as from office cleaning products.Of course, we can’t avoid contact withall toxins. God made you in Hisown image and you shouldreflect that in your thinking. When you can do that, youwill not settle for being secondbest. You will look your best, do your best andyou will pick the best friends to be with. Youwill not be swayed by what others think or do.Look after yourself. When life gets crazy, wetend to forget ourselves and what we need in theday, looking only after the needs of others. Wealso need some time for ourselves, rejuvenatingour minds and bodies. Take time to read, to soakin a tub, to go out with friends and laugh a lot.We need to start early to eat the right way. Istrongly recommend that you eat lots of fruitsand vegetables, drink lots of water and forgetthe carbonated drinks. You also need to take time out to commune withyour Heavenly Father because after all He is theone who loves you and wants the best for you.”Ruth Borthistle,Affiliate member“I would urge all my youngerwomen friends to fully followTriVita’s 10 Essentials forHealth and Wellness. Theseare the great foundations forprincipled living. They havehelped me establish my ‘habits for health.’I was challenged by my own mother to read atleast one verse daily from the Bible and be in aplace of committed faith. I have had plenty ofsupport to develop acceptance and became aforgiving, loving, grateful woman. I surroundedmyself with inspiring, positive people. I tried toexpress my grateful spirit for everything they did.Remembering a friend’s birthday and sendingcaring notes is a priority. So is tipping theattendant in an airport restroom and smiling ateveryone. I am developing an ‘after you’ spirit.Letting folks in the grocery line go ahead of meor letting a car merge ahead of me feels good. This for me all combines into a fresh, fulfilling, healthy life. Every day is a choice.”Kelly Hickman,TriVita employee“There’s nothing moreimportant than our health –our physical, spiritual andemotional health. For physicalhealth, I would encourageall women to maintain agood supplement program of daily vitaminsand minerals such as VitaDaily AM/PM multi-vitamin for general wellness support, Vital Cfor preventative health, Adaptogen 10 Plus forreducing stress and Nopalea for eliminatingtoxins and reducing inflammation.Emotional and spiritual health are equallyimportant. For spiritual health, I encourageeveryone to have at least one devotionalsession daily to maintain and strengthen theirrelationship with God. For emotional health, Ibelieve a positive attitude is essential. The minutewe get out of bed, we choose the kind of day weare going to have. We all have issues to face, andalthough we can’t pick the ones to come our way,we can choose the attitudes we’re going to havewhen facing them.By helping to take care of all aspects of our healthwe’ll be on the right path for greater wellness sowe can live our lives to the fullest.”each month, membersof the TriVita®wellnesscommunity share theirinsights on health, wellness and more. This monthly feature creates an openforum to respond to a variety of provocativequestions about a wide range of subjects.Join the discussion! 22. 22. Pigments in fruits and vegetables may protect against bone loss, study suggestsBoston, MassachusettsCarotenoids (antioxidant pigments found in fruits and vegetables) appear to have a protective effect againstbone loss, it was reported recently in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.Researchers from Tufts University, Hebrew SeniorLife and Boston University studied data on 334 men and540 women in the Framingham Osteoporosis Study. Using data from food questionnaires, they evaluatedthe intake of carotenoids (including alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lycopene and luteinplus zeaxanthin) in association with bone mineral density (BMD) at the hip, spine and radial shaft (bonein the forearm).Carotenoids (lycopene in particular, which is found in tomatoes, pink grapefruit, watermelon) appeared to havea protective effect against loss of BMD in the lumbar spine for women and in the hip for men. Researchersconcluded: “Although not consistent across all BMD sites examined, these results support a protective role ofcarotenoids for BMD in older men and women.”A Cup of tea? It just might reduce your risk of strokeSan Diego, CaliforniaThree or more cups of tea a day may reduce your risk of stroke, according to a new study from UCLA’s DavidGeffen School of Medicine.Researchers examined data from nine earlier studies that recorded the consumption of green or black tea andstroke incidence in 194,965 people. It was discovered that regardless of country of origin, those who drank threeor more cups of black or green tea had a 21% lower risk of stroke than those who drank less than one cup per day.The results were presented earlier this year at the American Heart Association’s annual International StrokeConference in San Diego, California and published in the May 2009 Stroke: The Journal of the AmericanHeart Association. The Unilever Lipton Institute of Tea funded the study.A diet rich in fish and olive oil may preserve bone massAthens, GreeceA study from the Harokopio University in Athens suggests that a diet with some of the features of theso-called Mediterranean diet may help women maintain their bone mass throughout adulthood.Researchers measured the lumbar spine bone mineral density and total body mineral content in 220 adultGreek women. Their diet was evaluated through food records and a Mediterranean diet score. While a Mediterranean diet was not found to affect bone mass indicators, certain elements of the diet werefound to be positively associated with lumbar spine bone mineral density and total body mineral content.Researchers concluded that “...adherence to a dietary pattern close to the Mediterranean diet, i.e., highconsumption of fish and olive oil and low red meat intake, was positively related to bone mass, suggestingpotential bone-preserving properties of this pattern throughout adult life.”TheResearch DeskNew findings in health and wellnesstrivita.com22 l VITAJOURNAL Celebrating 10 Years of Health and Wellness
  23. 23. An OuTgOing PersOnALiTy mAy HeLPcOmBAT infLAmmATiOnRochester, New YorkPeople with high “dispositional activity” or engagement in life (extraverts), have lowerlevels of the stress-related inflammatory chemical, interleukin 6 (IL-6), according toresearch published in the July 2009 issue of Brain, Behavior and Immunity.“Our study took the important first step of finding an association between onepart of extraversion and a specific stress-related, inflammatory chemical,” saidBenjamin Chapman, Ph.D., assistant professor within the Rochester Center forMind-Body Research (RCMBR) at the University of Rochester Medical Center, and lead author of the study. The next step, say researchers, is to determine if onecauses the other. If low engagement in life is causing inflammation, treatmentplans could focus on helping high-risk patients become more engaged in life. For both white and minority women, the difference between high and lowengagement in life was enough to send IL-6 levels over a threshold previouslylinked to a doubling of risk of death within five years. Other aspects ofextraversion, such as sociability and positive emotions, appeared to have noaffect on IL-6 levels.Article from Michael Ellison continued from page 2...density test, I had actually gained bone in my hips. TakingBone Builder requires a commitment as you must take threedoses daily. I have learned some little tricks to help me staycompliant with the dosage recommendations, such as assemblingmy supplements in pretty little containers on the counter toremind me, and I even have a pretty pill box in my purse.Nopalea has become my miracle cocktail that I take daily.I had severe inflammatory arthritis and lived with chronicand excruciating pain in my feet. I started taking Nopalea, not knowing if it would even help, but within six weeks, theinflammation was gone and I was pain free and even back toexercising and enjoying life’s activities. One more exciting thinghappened as a result of Nopalea: my CRP (C-reactive protein)number dropped below one. My physician was very excited tosee that, as CRP is a heart inflammatory marker. I have learnedthat supplementing is like eating – you wouldn’t let a day go bywithout it. I wasn’t born with good genes, but TriVita supplementshave made an incredible difference in giving me better health.”Thank you, Susan. Afterhaving three children right in a row, I started getting myperiod only once per year, sometimes every other year.I went to several naturopaths and was told I was maybeentering menopause at the age of 35. I started walkingtwo hours every day and weight training every otherday just to try to keep the weight from ballooning, but Icouldn’t lose a single pound. Finally, one naturopath told me I had polycystic ovarian syndrome. By this time, not only was I extremely overweight, but I also had chronic PMS symptomssuch as sore breasts, bloating and irritability. I started taking TriVita’sBalanced Woman and GlucoManage together, got my period three times ina row, and lost 25 pounds which I’ve kept off for the past two years. I’ve sincelost another 10 pounds and have had my period four times so far just this year.I don’t have PMS symptoms like before. I feel like I finally have some hope.“Marie D. – Bow, WA“My pain is minimal and my energy level isgreatly increased.”“I am surprised and also very excited about this product because it works. As a 70-year-old retired Registered Nurse, I had to retire years early dueto fibromyalgia. I tried many prescriptions with little help until I trieda prescription medication that helped the pain but had the bad side effectof weight gain.I was reluctant to try Nopalea as I believed more in the medical modelapproach. My daughter-in-law convinced me to give it a try and I am so verythankful she did. I cannot express the difference Nopalea has made in mylife. My pain is minimal and my energy level is greatly increased. I am alsosleeping through the night and able to do the things I love. I truly feel that Ihave my life back. The taste is very good and more importantly, the resultsare excellent. I have encouraged friends and family to give Nopalea a try. Iknow they won’t be disappointed!”Pauline C. – Glenburn, ME
  25. 25. 1-800-991-7116 October 2009 l 25All it took was a chanceencounter with TriVita®CEO Michael Ellison and hiswife, Susan, to dramatically changeone person’s life. Melody (Melo)was working as a server at a hotelrestaurant on the big island of Hawaiiwhen she struck up a conversationwith the Ellisons. They were won overby Melo’s bubbly, upbeat personality. As someone who was very interestedin health and wellness, she was veryintrigued by TriVita’s products andvowed to find out more.Melo started researching the company anddiscovered that her sister had been taking(and raving about) TriVita products all along. Now she was really inspired to give theseproducts a try.A super lift from Super BMelo started with TriVita’s hugely popularproduct, Super Sublingual B-12. “I love it,”Melo exclaims. “It gives me a nice lift and morestrength, energy and clarity than ever before.Super B allows me to multi-task and easily getthrough 40-hour work weeks without missinga beat.” She also takes Balanced Woman®,which gives her fast relief from many symptomsof menopause. “Before I was getting such badhot flashes that I would step into the walk-inrefrigerator room at work and try to cool off,” sherecalls. “Now I finally feel like I have some help.”Fantastic Nopalea™ resultsMelo is positively ecstatic about Nopalea. “Ithas given me unbelievable energy,” she relates,“and I feel great after taking it.” She notices thatNopalea has definitely decreased the amountand severity of her family’s colds andother viruses. It has also helped easeher husband’s sciatica symptoms.Melo is also thrilled that her friendsare enjoying tremendous results fromNopalea. For example, one friend hastype 2 diabetes, which caused his legto turn black. Since he started withNopalea his leg has cleared up and he’sso sold on the product that he’s ordered twocases. Another friend had been living withconstant back pain for many years. After threedays on Nopalea she said to Melo, “I don’t havepain anymore. What’s in this stuff?”“Now that I’ve seen how Nopalea has benefitedboth my friends and family, I am very passionateabout this product,” Melo reports, “and I stronglybelieve that Nopalea is the perfect product forour times.”Even more important, she considers TriVita astaunch partner in her effort to ensure goodhealth for her entire family. She has reason tobe concerned. “Four members of my immediatefamily have died in recent years from variousdiseases,” she says. “I also have a brother inhis fifties who suffers from several serioushealth conditions and carries an oxygen tankwherever he goes. I want to break this cycle ofillness that’s plaguing our family... and I don’twant to be a statistic. I plan on staying alive tohelp my children and grandchildren find theirpurpose in life.”Hawaii’s healthcare problemsAlthough Hawaii is considered a picture-perfect, tropical paradise by many statesiders,as a native Hawaiian, Melo is painfullyaware of the 50th state’s less glamorous side.Hawaii tops the charts for many diseases, especially type 2 diabetes. One of the reasonsunemployment is on the rise is because manypeople have cut back on family vacations tothe Islands. This causes inevitable stress andbreakdown of health for families who dependon the tourist trade. Many of these samepeople could benefit from TriVita products –and that’s why she has decided to becomea TriVita Affiliate Member. “My passion isto help Hawaiians stay healthier and livelonger,” she remarks. “Now I finally have allthe tools available to make that happen.”People immediately respond to Melo’sdynamic personality and she is spreadingthe word about Nopalea and other TriVitaproducts at stores, doctor’s offices and anyother welcoming location. “Just give me aplace to set up shop and I can assure youthat I’ll get people interested in Nopalea,”Melo enthuses. “People just love the fruity, delicious flavor. Then, I just need to wait afew days after they’ve started their first bottleto hear inspirational stories from many peoplewho have gotten incredible health resultsfrom Nopalea.”So, if a vivacious Hawaiian woman with awarm smile offers you a Nopalea sample, makesure to say “Aloha” because it could very wellbe Melo.Melo refuses to becomea healthcare statisticTriVita products bring good health tofriends and familyMember Spotlightso sold on the product that he’s ordered twocases.
