The testimonials that have come into TriVitaeach day over this past year are AMAZING AND ASTONISHING!Let me share with you a portion of an email I received about one woman’sNopalea experience: “I have taken Nopalea for one month as of today, and thechanges and improvements in my health have been nothing less than miraculous.I have suffered with chronic inflammation and various autoimmune conditions that go with it for most of my life.I have not been able to do physical exercise for three years. After four weeks of taking Nopalea, I am now walking30-45 minutes a day and have no sign of any of these debilitating conditions. My husband John remarked after ahike one day, ‘How wonderful it is to have my wife back.’”Now here is a message we all should hear, stated by our Chief Science Officer, Brazos Minshew, whenNopalea was introduced: “If the condition is caused by chronic inflammation, then Nopalea could be thesolution.” Look at the leading diseases our medical practitioners deal with every day and you will see theyare rooted in, and caused by, prolonged chronic inflammation which weakens the body’s ability to resistillness and disease. Many people think of inflammation as redness or swelling on a specific area of the body, but it is muchbroader and widespread, and certainly more potentially harmful. Here are other ways to identify chronicinflammatory conditions:1. Inflammation of the heart: shortness of breath, leg swelling2. Stomach inflammation: constipation, irritation, gas, swelling3. Large intestine inflammation: cramps, prolonged diarrhea4. Kidney inflammation: high blood pressureInflammation is a process by which the body’s immune system protects us from infection and theinvasion of foreign substances such as bacteria and viruses. However, sometimes the immune systemoverreacts. This can lead to chronic inflammation from a prolonged period of immune response, whicheventually leads to tissue and cell damage, creating the perfect environment for disease. Please hear this message: If you want to cut your risk of today’s leading sicknesses, lower theinflammation in your body. One of the best ways you can help your body do this is by taking Nopalea.Take three to six ounces of this product every day, even if you have to cut other things out of yourbudget; this is one of the very best things you can do for your long-term health and wellness. If you have not read The Secret Killer Health Alert, highlighting what Time magazine wrote aboutinflammation, call and ask for it with your next order. Let me take just a moment to address men and the inflammatoryconditions that can significantly impact their health, which in turn impacts the entire family.Men seem to deal with three major conditions that are rooted in inflammation: heart and prostateconditions, and fat around the middle, which is really fat amongst the organs. These are all conditionsrelated to chronic inflammation, and can significantly impact a man’s long-term health if not dealt with. This month, as we recognize the value and importance of a father’s role in family life, I encourage men totake serious action on a health and wellness plan.Look at the lifestyle choices you can make to improve your health. ON MY MINDEDITOR’s NOTEThis month, June 21, bringsus the first day of summer, and like many people, for me summer alwaystriggers memories – mostly of myown childhood.Recently my youngest daughter told me she hadpurchased an ice cream maker so she could makeher own fun summer sorbet recipes. It’s funnyhow a word, an image, a song or even a smell cantake you right back to an exact moment in time.Suddenly I flashed back to those summers in the1960s when my mom and dad would have friendsand family over on Sunday for supper (that’sTexan for dinner), and the highlight of the mealwas sitting out on the back porch in flimsy lawnchairs while my dad cranked away on the woodenice cream freezer. As the youngest who rarely left my dad’s side, there I would be propped up on the top of thefreezer with all the weight a skinny kid couldmuster up so Daddy could crank faster and easier. We’d stop every few minutes and pour more saltfrom the box onto the ice to make it freeze. Iremember the anticipation I felt waiting for thathomemade banana ice cream! Those were somegreat summer memories, and although I hadn’tthought of that experience for decades, I suddenlywas very grateful for being able to remember.Memory loss from brain erosion is a seriousmatter, and you’ll be surprised to read on pages6-7 how it can affect people as early as their 20s!You’ll want to take advantage of our promotionthis month and stock up on Sublingual B-12,our flagship product. 4 l VITAJOURNAL trivita.comDefense,Invaders,Protection:These words thatcome up whendescribing the body’simmune systemsound militaristic, and with goodreason. This extraordinary, complexsystem is our front line, every day, inthe battle against the things thatdon’t belong in our bodies. Whetherit’s an object, an organism or atissue, the immune system is incharge of recognizing it as friend orfoe, and charging into action if thevisitor is considered hostile. One of the best descriptions of the immunesystem, I think, comes from ImmunologistWilliam Paul of the National Institutes ofHealth. He says, “The immune system hasa phenomenal ability for dealing with infor-mation for learning and memory, for creatingand storing and using that information.”Sometimes called the king of the body’s supersystems, the immune system has an amazingability to assess molecules that have neverbeen in the body before, and decideon the appropriate action.Medical science is focusingincreasingly on the role thatinflammation plays in disease, and I’d like to focus hereon the immune system’srole in “deploying” andmanaging the body’sinflammation response.Inflammation:why and howA key element of theimmune system is thelymphatic system, because itcomes in direct contact withevery cell. So if any cellanywhere in the body is “introuble,” it’s the lymphaticsystem that answers the call. The lymphatic system is notpumped by the heart, but by themovement of the lungs. That’swhy, when a person practicesdeep abdominal breathing, they’re stimulating the system. And it’s also why, when we arestressed, an interplay of glandsand organs makes our breathingshallow – and puts our lymphatic systeminto stagnation. This explains why peopleunder stress have higher rates of every-thing from viral infection toserious disease. When the lymphatic system isstagnant, cells begin to suffocatebecause nutrients can’t get in andwaste can’t get out. The body has tofind other means to cope with thispotential infection, and it turns toinflammation. Inflammation is anormal response to an abnormalcondition, and it’s part of how ourbodies cope. Let’s look at howinflammation works for us, helpingus to heal when we have tissueinjury from, for example, asprained finger:1. Redness. An injured area needsan increased supply of nutrientsand proteins carried in the blood. So, blood supply increases, andthe tissue turns red.2. Swelling. The injured area isbathed in healing proteins andsubstances to control bleeding,as well as an increased supply fortransport of waste. This causesthe injured area to swell.Inflammationcontrol:Welcome to your immune systemThis special feature is Part 5 of the VitaJournal’s5-part series on the major systems of the body.By Dr. Samuel N. GriefBody Systems 101–Part5Samuel Grief, M.D.,CCFP, FCFP
3. Pain. The injured area needs to be protected. We instinctively guard an injury because wefeel or anticipate pain.4. Heat. The damaged tissue becomes weak-ened, and so is susceptible to infection.White blood cells rush to the area anddefend the fragile cells from microbes (verybroadly, germs). Heat or fever in the damagedarea is a sign that this is working.5. Loss of function. This process is accompa-nied by a reduction in function of the injuredarea until it is healed. If the stress of the injury continues, so doesthe inflammation. This launches a cascade ofinflammation leading to infection, leading toallergy, leading to irritation, leading to moreinflammation and so on.Chronic stress, chronic inflammationEventually, an immune system under stress anddeprived of the proper nutrients and nurturingwill form an auto-immune response. Auto-immunity is an abnormal response to anabnormal problem of chronic stress and chronicinflammation. It happens when your immunesystem loses its ability to distinguish healthytissues from diseased tissues – so it attacksthem both.Consider two examples of auto-immunity: lupusand rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Lupus causesinflammation in all the internal organs, and asa result, your immune system attacks the organs.Eventually, the organs can be destroyed by yourown immune system. In RA, healthy joints areattacked as though they were diseased; goodcartilage is destroyed along with bad. Some-times, there is no bad cartilage at all: yourimmune system just thinks that there is, anddestroys all of the joints.Increasingly, the medical community islooking at chronic inflammation as the realissue behind many serious diseases. I’d liketo emphasize again: inflammation itself is anormal, healthy response. It’s when the immunesystem gets “stuck” in this defense mode thatinflammation becomes chronic, and that’swhen action is needed.Reduce stress, increase nutrientsWhile there are no quick fixes for a strugglingimmune system, repair can be accomplishedthrough stress reduction and intense nutrition. Many doctors advocate taking a multi-vitaminor multi-nutrient supplement, along with anantioxidant complex and an Omega-3supplement.Remember, the immune system is part of acomplex interaction with your brain and otherimmune cells. They “talk” with each other, learn from each other and act to keep us aliveand well under difficult circumstances. Ratherthan wait for an “invader” to attack, yourimmune system compensates for an infinitenumber of possibilities, and makes a decisionon the best strategy to keep you functioningin whatever stressful condition you may be.Your current health is an expression of yourimmune system’s best effort to interact withyour environment, both internal and external,to find and maintain a balance. No wondersome people call it the king of the body’ssuper systems! 1-800-991-7116 June 2010 l 5Samuel N. For a long time, medical science has knownthat the human brain changes with age: itliterally erodes, or loses volume, over time.Statistics from the 1970s and ‘80s foundbrain erosion (sometimes up to 25%) onlyin people over age 50. Just a few yearsago, however, a major study conducted byWashington University in St. Louis, MO,detected brain volume loss as early as age 30.And, the researchers also found that thisbrain erosion often leads to mental confusionand memory loss.More recently (just a few months ago),researchers at Wayne State University’sDepartment of Psychology added to thisgrowing body of studies with another finding:the speed of brain erosion, and the brainregions affected, varies widely, even amonghealthy people. Although this study didn’t lookat the reasons for these variations, I could makean educated guess that Vitamin B-12 mighthave been a factor. It’s established medical factthat Vitamin B-12 plays a big role in mentalsharpness, memory, mood and energy.Correct a B-12 deficiency, correctmemory loss?No less an authority than Harvard MedicalSchool plainly endorses the use of B-12 to treatmemory loss caused by a deficiency of B-12.The prestigious school supports these findings:• A lack of Vitamin B-12 can cause perma-nent damage to brain cells• Vitamin B-12 deficiency is among thereversible causes of memory loss (alongwith stress and disease)• Addressing B-12 deficiency is a treatmentfor memory loss• Addressing B-12 deficiency early canhelp bring back lost memory function• Ignoring B-12 deficiency can worsenmemory lossThere’s more evidence pointing to the valueof B-12 in helping protect against brain issuesamong younger people. According to theNational Institutes of Health, one studysuggests that B-12 deficiency affects a muchbroader age range than many have thought. The study, published in the American Journal ofClinical Nutrition, pointed to three different agegroups found to have about the same deficiencyin blood levels of B-12: those 65 and over, those ages 50-64, and those ages 26-49. That’sright: People as young as 26 turned out to beas B-12 deficient as some people over 65.Across ages, supplement usershave better resultsThe study of B-12 deficiency across three agegroups turned up another important finding:“…those who did not take a supplementcontaining Vitamin B-12 were twice as likelyto be Vitamin B-12 deficient as supplementusers, regardless of age group.”So, if you or a loved one may not get all the6 l VITAJOURNAL trivita.comVitamin B-12 can help protect against erosion, deficiencies at early agesYou probably know the term “senior moment”: suddenly you can’tremember your favorite uncle’s name, or where you parked the car. These lapses happen to most of us from time to time, especially aswe age. What’s fascinating to me now, though, is that these occurrencesare affecting people much younger than medical science used to expect.Scott Conard, M.D., is the founder of TienaHealth,an organization of medical doctors in primarycare practice who emphasize healthy lifestylesto maintain wellness. 1-800-991-7116 June 2010 l 9The link between diet andyour energy levely of Wellness Seekers!you on your journey to wellness – by Phone and EmailHow is your energy level? The World Health Organization (WHO) statesthat “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merelythe absence of disease or infirmity. It is theability to lead a socially and economicallyproductive life.”Does that describe you? Or, like many peoplein North America, are you just too tired tothink about being socially and economicallyproductive? The scope of the problemUp to 85% of the people who visit a doctor forany reason also complain of being chronicallytired. It seems that we are in the middle ofan energy crisis that has nothing to do withpetroleum production! When we talk about energy we need todistinguish between the ability to survive andthe feeling of being energetic. We must admitthat even the sickest person is convertingnutrients to energy in order to survive. Yet, wewant to do more than survive – we want to feelenergetic. We want to feel our best every day.Food and energyAs I mentioned, energy comes from the way ourbody burns nutrients; nutrients such as fats, protein and carbohydrates must be metabolized. The word metabolism is from a Greek word thatdescribes the process of burning wood to createheat. It also describes creating energy from food. So, an energetic life is possible with a healthydiet and healthy metabolism. This description outlines the two steps neededto create and sustain an energetic feeling:Improve our “burn” rate (metabolism) andimprove our “fuel” source (diet).Polyphenols increase metabolism. Polyphenolsare extremely rare nutrients found in certainfoods and concentrated in TriVita’s EnergyNow!®. Energy Now! increases the burn-rate ofthe food we eat. A balanced diet must include:• 7 to 9 servings of fruit and vegetables(for adults)• 30+ grams of high quality protein• 20 to 35 grams of fiber dailyHowever, when it comes to providing energy, fat is the undisputed champion.Sugar from the foods we eat provides us withready energy, but it doesn’t last very long.Proteins are converted to energy at a muchslower pace and provide us with a more stablesupply of energy – five times as much energyper gram as sugar. Fats provide us with stamina.Healthy fats burn slowly and steadily up to eighttimes longer than sugar. So, for stamina thatlasts all day and into the evening hours, selectfoods high in “good” fats (vegetables, seeds, nuts, legumes) and take an EFA supplement. With the proper nutrients, you can help restoreboth the energy of metabolism and the feelingof being energetic!Learn more about these and other wellness topics by dialing in to the Wellness Talksand signing up for Weekly Wellness Reports. 1-800-991-7116 June 2010 l 11TriVita had its own NopaleaWellness Challenge among itsemployees to demonstrate how aLoading Phase of Nopalea couldtruly deliver benefits. The resultsour employees had were soincredible that we wanted toshare them with you. ThisChallenge story comes fromCheryl Earl in Publications. You might say that Cheryl Earl really livesher job, because quality TriVita supple-ments are part of her daily routine. That’s why she was one of the first to startfeeling the amazing benefits of Nopalea. Butwhen the Wellness Challenge kicked into gear,so did her pain relief. As a key player in designing monthlyVitaJournals, catalogs and other materials,Cheryl knew a lot about Nopalea when it wasfirst introduced, and found it helped her bodyrelieve pain after having shoulder surgery on arotator cuff. “I would mix an ounce or so ofNopalea with OptimaFlex®, another excellentTriVita product, and the combination helpedwith the soreness after my surgery,” she says. Then Cheryl tried Nopalea alone, andexperienced a big improvement in anotherarea: breathing. “I have a chronic breathingcondition, and I can feel when my lungsare inflamed. On Nopalea, I wasn’t havingthat inflammation, or the symptoms. Sofar this year, I have had absolutely nobreathing difficulties.”At the same time, Cheryl was undergoingphysical therapy for her shoulder, and sufferingboth headaches and shoulder pain. For relief, she was relying on the pain relievers she hadtaken most of her life: non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) such asibuprofen. But once she started taking thepainkillers daily, she noticed problems withacid reflux, and her doctor ordered her to stoptaking NSAIDS. (See page 19 for more onpain-relief medications.)“Thank goodness for Nopalea. I don’t knowwhat I would have done in my situation, withheadaches, shoulder pain and no NSAIDS,”she relates. That was when the NopaleaWellness Challenge – and a new level ofrelief for Cheryl – began.“Pain, headaches, breathing problems…practically gone!”“I began a Loading Phase of four ounces ofNopalea every day, and started feeling thedifference almost immediately. My shoulderpain, my headaches, my breathing problems, they were all practically gone!”Now, Cheryl takes three ouncesof the breakthrough wellnessdrink every morning. She’sreached her “maintenance”level of Nopalea, and if sheforgets to take it, or happensto run out, “It’s like there’s areservoir of benefits that keepsme going if I miss a day or two.”Along with Nopalea, Cheryl never missestaking her other TriVita supplements:OmegaPrime®, VitaCal-Mag D™, VitaDailyAM/PM™, Adaptogen 10 Plus®, HCY Guard®and Sublingual B-12. “I know that TriVitaproducts work,” she attests, “and that’s why Istarted on Nopalea.”“From all the testimonials that pour in, I knowthat Nopalea does so many things for manydifferent people,” she says. “For me, the effecton my life has been that now I don’t wakeup with aches and pains. When it comes to inflammation, phytochemicals are on ourside. Phytochemicals arechemical compounds that naturallyoccur in plants, which serve a medicinalpurpose in the body to improve healthand well-being. They interfere with thenormal flow of certain chemical signalssent to and from the cells involved inchronic inflammation. What thatmeans is that these powerful compoundsintercept the inflammatory response. To keep pain at bay from the inside out, yourbody must be fed the right type of vitamins, minerals and nutrients to keep it functioning ata high level. Eating healthy, plant-based mealswill certainly help your body flourish. Many ofthese healing compounds are found in everydayfoods, beverages and spices like garlic, ginger, cinnamon, red wine and grapes. However, hereare three of my favorites: powerful, lesser-knowncompounds that work exceptionally well tofight inflammation.TurmericTurmeric has a distinctive sharp flavor andaccounts for the yellow color of curry andAmerican mustard. It works well for all inflam-matory disorders, including painful, swollenjoints, tendinitis and auto-immune conditions, but takes two months for benefits to develop.Note: It is not to be used if you have gallstonesor bile duct dysfunction.BoswellinThis is the extract of the herb Boswellia, used in Ayurvedic (Indian) medicine. Itsanti-inflammatory properties rival thoseof prescription medications without thestomach irritation.Nopal cactusAccording to the U.S. Food and DrugAdministration, this super food contains a rareand powerful class of antioxidants calledBetalains, scientifically proven to help the bodydetoxify and reduce inflammation. Learn more aboutskin cancer and how you can helpprotect against it.Skin: the biggest organ of your bodyIf taken off the body, your skin would weighbetween six and nine pounds, and have a surfacearea of about two square yards. It is the largestorgan of your body. Your skin protects you frombacteria and viruses that can cause infections, helps you sense the outside world, such aswhether it is hot or cold, wet or dry, and regu-lates your body temperature.Your skin has two layers: the epidermis (outerlayer) and the dermis (inner layer). Theepidermis is made up of two layers of cells: ontop are the squamous cells, with basal cellsbelow. Cells called melanocytes are also found inthe epidermis. These cells produce melanin, abrown pigment that gives your skin color. The dermis is made up of blood vessels, hairfollicles, and glands that produce sweat and anoily substance called sebum, which helps preventthe skin from drying out.Due to its vital, protective nature, it is importantto keep your skin healthy by avoiding the risksassociated with skin cancer. Just because yourskin is “external” doesn’t mean skin cancer isn’tas harmful as “internal” cancers. Two layers of epidermis=two typesof skin cancerThe two most common forms of skin cancer arebasal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carci-noma. They are known together asnon-melanoma cancers. Melanoma, a type ofskin cancer which begins deeper in the skin, isless common than non-melanoma cancers butmuch more dangerous: it is the leading cause ofdeath from skin disease. This article will focuson squamous cell carcinoma: skin cancer of thefirst layer of cells in the first layer of skin. The biggest risk factors for getting skincancer are:• Having light or fair skin, light-colored eyes, and naturally red or blonde hair• Prolonged, unprotected exposure to sunlight(ultraviolet radiation)• A family history of skin cancer, especiallymelanoma• Age: non-melanoma skin cancers are morecommon after age 40• Having lots of moles, large or irregular molesSkin cancer risksSquamous cell carcinomas account for about20% of diagnosed skin cancers. Cancers of this sort are mostcommonly found on the ears, face and mouth, and seem to appear more frequently on olderpeople. One reason this form of cancer appearson those parts of the body is because of theirfrequent exposure to sunlight. Squamous cellcarcinomas can also develop in scars and skinulcers, and less commonly, from pre-cancerouslesions called actinic keratoses. These lesionscan appear as rough, flat pink spots or areason the skin.DetectionDetection of skin cancer early on is, like allcancers, central to successful treatment. You canperform a monthly self-examination at home todetect early signs of skin cancer.• Look for a change in the size, color, shapeor texture of any moles, freckles, bumps orbirthmarks, or any changes in your skin.• Exams should take place after a bath orshower, preferably in front of a full-lengthmirror and in good lighting.• Be sure to have someone check your back formoles and lesions, or use a hand mirror, andinclude a skin cancer screening in yourregular doctor visits.• Don’t wait for any pain at the site of anydiscoloration; pain is rarely a symptomof cancer. If you find any new moles, changes to old moles,or areas that resemble the photos above, see adoctor immediately. Most times, doctors willperform a nearly painless biopsy (tissue removal)of the area under a local anesthetic and have theskin analyzed for cancer cells. If skin cancer isdetected, in many cases the affected area or molecan be removed in a doctor’s office, with no sideeffects or prolonged treatment. Cancer that hasspread, however, may require more significant treatment, including radiation or chemotherapy. Still, inmost cases surgery is the preferred method ofgetting rid of the cancerous cells.Help protect against skin cancerThe best way to protect against skin cancer is toreduce your exposure to sunlight, especiallymidday sun. If you do go out in the sun:• Avoid tanning and sunburn• Use sunscreen with an SPF (sun protectionfactor) rating of at least 30• Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes beforegoing outside and reapply frequently• Wear a wide-brimmed hat, long sleevesand pants• Wear sunscreen in the winter, as well• Use extra caution near water, snow or sand,as they reflect the sun• Check the UV index in your area andplan accordinglyThe UV indexThe UV (ultraviolet light) index appears inmost newspapers and television weather reports. It is a measurement of how much UV radiationis glaring down on you on that day, and tellsyou how likely you are to be exposed to thedamaging radiation. UV light causes damageto the DNA in your skin cells, which can lead toskin cancer. Before planning outdoor activities, check the index to see which safety precautionsyou should take that day. Remember, reducedsun exposure is your best bet for protectingagainst skin cancer.More than 1 million people are diagnosed with skin cancerevery year in the United States alone.

I was constantly in pain and wrote itoff as something I would have for the rest of mylife. When the pain got worse from strain or cold,I would have to take high dosages of over-the-counter medications to deal with the pain andinflammation. My doctor said I shouldn’t takethese products for very long because of potentialdamage to my liver and other organs. However, these medications were the only thing that wouldtake the edge off the pain. Then my father told me about Nopalea and whatit had done for him. I began taking Nopalea, andafter the first bottle, I noticed an incredibledifference. My pain decreased significantly and Ialso noticed an increase in energy and clarity. 18 l VITAJOURNAL trivita.comTheResearch DeskNew findings in health and wellnessEarly balding good news for the prostate; may cut cancer riskSeattle, WashingtonMen who experience hair loss before age 30 may have a reduced risk of prostate cancer, according to a studyreported in Cancer Epidemiology.Researchers from the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle evaluated 999 men, aged 35 to 74,who had been diagnosed with prostate cancer between 2002 and 2005. They compared them to 942 men withoutcancer and discovered that those who experienced male pattern baldness before the age of 30 had a 29% riskreduction for prostate cancer. A 45% risk reduction was discovered for men who were balding at both the top ofthe head and the forehead while in their 30s.Researchers say that further research is needed to determine the link between hair loss and prostate cancer. Bothhormones and genes may play a role.Exercise may help prevent mental declineRochester, MinnesotaExercise in midlife may guard against mild cognitive (mental) impairment, according to a study in the January2010 Archives of Neurology.Researchers studied 1,324 people who were part of the Mayo Clinic Study of Aging. Participants filled out anexercise questionnaire between 2006 and 2008 and were assessed by an expert panel to determine if they hadnormal cognition or mild cognitive impairment. It was determined that 198 participants had mild cognitive impairment while 1,126 individuals did not. Basedon questionnaire responses, researchers discovered that those who participated in moderate exercise in midlife orlater were less likely to have mental decline. Specifically, those who exercised in midlife had a 39% reduced riskof mental decline, while those who started later in life had a 32% reduced risk. Researchers found no significantdifference in cognitive decline between those who participated in moderate exercise versus those who participatedin vigorous exercise.Massage and music are equals when it comes to easing anxietySeattle, WashingtonWhen researchers at Group Health Research Institute set out to assess how effective massage is for patients withgeneralized anxiety disorder, they found that massage reduced the symptoms of anxiety by 50%. But they alsodiscovered that simple relaxation in a room alone with soft, soothing music had the exact same effect.“We were surprised to find that the benefits of massage were no greater than those of the same number ofsessions of ‘thermotherapy’(heat therapy) or listening to relaxing music,” said Karen J. Sherman, PhD, MPH, asenior investigator at Group Health Research Institute. “This suggests that the benefits of massage may be dueto a generalized relaxation response.”Researchers assigned 68 patients to one of three groups: the first group received 10 one-hour massages, the second engaged in deep breathing, and the third received thermotherapy – having their arms and legsperiodically wrapped with heating pads and warm towels. All three groups received their treatments lying downin a softly lit room, with quiet music playing in the background.Patients in all groups reported a decrease in anxiety. They also reported fewer symptoms of depression and lessworry and disability.

In fact, the non-medical use of pain medications, both prescription and over-the-counter(OTC), was involved in about 324,000Emergency Room visits in a recent year. That statistic from the Drug AbuseWarning Network joins other figures thatpoint to an alarming trend: the dangerousmisuse of painkillers. While the term “illicit drugs” may suggest heroin, cocaine or other substances, the National Survey onDrug Use and Health (NSDUH), an annual reportfrom the U.S. government, has a broader definition:it says that after marijuana use, taking prescriptionpain relievers without a doctor’s prescription is “thesecond most common form of illicit drug use in theUnited States.” Drugs such as hydrocodone, oxyco-done, morphine and others can help reduce painand suffering, but they can have severe side effectsand lead to addiction. In the most recent year for which statistics areavailable (2007), NSDUH found that two agegroups were showing increases in painkiller drugabuse: young adults aged 18 to 25, and adults aged26 and older.Illegal markets almost everywhereYou don’t have to go to a big city to find illegalpainkillers. Data from the National DrugIntelligence Center’s National Drug ThreatSurvey reveal that almost 80% of state and locallaw enforcement agencies report either high ormoderate availability of “illegally diverted pharma-ceuticals.” More facts and figures:• Over 20% of Americans aged 12 or older reportnon-medical use of any prescription painkiller atsome point in their lives.• Some 6.2 million Americans aged 12 or older(2.5% of the population) report they are currentlyusing painkillers for non-medical use.Three types most commonly abusedThree classes of prescription painkillers are the mostcommonly abused:1. Opioids, which are most commonly prescribed forpain. These include codeine, oxycodone andmorphine.2. CNS (central nervous system) depressants, usedto treat anxiety and sleep disorders. These includebarbiturates and benzodiazepines.3. Stimulants prescribed for sleep disorders, atten-tion deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) andobesity. These include dextroamphetamineand methylphenidate.Naturally, these and all other prescription medica-tions should be taken only as directed by ahealthcare provider. They are potentially dangerous, and should never be shared, or left where they mightbe sampled or taken by others. But prescriptionpainkillers are just part of the story. OTC medicinesneed to be used with care, too.OTC also has potential dangersAlthough OTC medicines are freely available, theyshould be used carefully, too. According to the U.S.Food and Drug Administration (FDA), there aretwo basic types of OTC pain relievers: some containacetaminophen, and others contain non-steroidalanti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS).While acetaminophen is a very common painreliever and fever reducer, taking too much of thisactive ingredient can lead to liver damage. NSAIDS,also commonly used for pain and fever, includeaspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen sodium, and ketoprofen.NSAIDS can cause stomach bleeding, and also posea risk of kidney damage, especially for those over 60,or anyone with high blood pressure, heart disease orpre-existing kidney disease. If you have questions or concerns about any medica-tion, whether prescription or OTC, consult yourhealthcare provider.

Greenway Hayden Loop, Suite 950,Scottsdale, AZ 85260.Dear Editor,I have been wanting to applaud the monthly VitaJournal for some time.I’m 72 years old, in good physical health (thank God), but at the age of 60I suffered an emotional breakdown due to compounded emotional stressfrom a young age.As with so many people, it was TriVita’s Sublingual B-12 that freed mefrom prescription medications. Of course, over all of this was God’s hand. The VitaJournal is factual, informative and inspirational. It seeks to addressthe whole person (physical, emotional and spiritual), as this is imperativefor true wellness. With deep gratitude, I’d like to make special mentionof Michael Ellison, Chief Executive Officer and Founder, Chaplain GeneHenderson, and Pam Knox, Editor of Publications. A sincere ‘thank you’ toall who, through hard work and dedication, make TriVita, Inc. possible.*Gaile G., Member – Nanaimo, BC*You should not stop taking any medication without first consulting yourhealthcare provider. In Our Mailbox
by Dr. JudyAny man can be a father. It takes someone special to be a dad.– Author UnknownJudy Ellison, Ph.D., is a psychologist, author andmotivational speaker. She has inspired people aroundthe world to reach within and find their passionatepurpose to live a more meaningful life.22 l VITAJOURNAL trivita.comIt seems almostlike yesterdaythat myhusband and I,along with our twochildren, stood onthe porch of thefoster home where our “soon tobe adopted son” was living. Wewere a little apprehensive as weknocked on the door notknowing what to expect.I will never forget hearing ahigh-pitched voice squealingwith delight as he came runningdown the stairs, yelling, “Mydaddy’s come, my daddy’s come!”Dony came bounding out throughthe open door and flew into thearms of my husband. We weren’tprepared for his robust enthusiasmfor having a daddy! There is a big difference between paternity andfatherhood. And a bigger difference in “beinga dad.” A dad demonstrates that he loves hischildren by interacting with them, lettingthem know that they are important to himand that they matter. Both in my personal life and professionally, I haveobserved the extreme importance of a dad in achild’s life. In 2002, I started a research institutestudying behavioral health. In each applicant’squestionnaire we asked, “Who did you feel closerto; your father or your mother?” In over threeyears of research with both male and femaleparticipants, only one answered “my father.”I was curious to know why this one respondent, awoman, felt closer to her father, so I asked her todescribe her relationship with him. She said thather dad would always take time to sit down withher in the evening and talk to her about her day. Before he left he would tell her that he loved her.She said it couldn’t have been more than 15 or 20minutes but in those few moments he made herfeel that she really mattered. Before the research participants finished theirprograms, I would ask each one of them whatthey wished their fathers would have donedifferently. It was unanimous. Both men andwomen wished their fathers had:• Spent more one-on-one time with them• Taken the time to really listen • Said, ”I love you”• Made them feel that they matteredIn our society, there are many dynamics thatinterfere with being a dad: troubled marriages, separation, divorce and relocation. Because ofthese changes, many men are being forced todevelop family relationships that are quitedifferent from those they had with their ownfathers. What worked very well for their fathers20 or 30 years ago may not work at all with thekinds of challenges fathers face today. The level of personal commitment that kidsrequire is challenging, and sometimes evenoverwhelming. Yes, it is far easier to be a fatherthan a dad.Yet, if you are a father trying your best to be adad, it’s never too late to say, “I love you.” It’snever too late to spend quality time talkingand listening to your children whether theyare adults or small children. The message youwant to convey to your children is … I wantto be your dad.Judy Ellison, Ph.D.ConnectionsSonFather
your body, His Temple – 1 Cor. 6:19-20Father’s Day thoughtson God the FatherBy Chaplain Gene HendersonGene Henderson“Honor your father and yourmother, that your days maybe long upon the land whichthe Lord your God is givingyou.” – Exodus 20:12God the Father is a toughact to follow for us mortals. If the approach of Father’sDay brings up conflictingfeelings for you, we have a lot in common. Orat least we did, until I reconciled with my ownfather after a 20-year separation. My father was mostly absent from my life, and as I grew to adulthood in an establishedchurch, I never really knew what was meantwhen people talked about “Father God,” or“Our Heavenly Father.” In my world, a fatherwas someone you had to perform for and tryharder to please every day, and always worryyou hadn’t done enough. So the idea of asupreme being was yet another authorityfigure I was supposed to perform for. Whenyou add in Jesus Christ, and realize that Hisson on earth was perfect, I just thought “Ican’t compete!”If God won’t accept me, why bother? That same drive to perform and please reallyruled me until almost mid-life. I was never“good enough” for my wife and children; theywere never good enough, and so on. It was aconvenient excuse for not knowing Godintimately: I could never just be accepted formyself, I thought, so why bother? That thinking all changed one day, when Iwas advising a young couple about a businessdecision. To be honest, I resented them a little. They were being handed an opportunity on asilver platter from the young man’s parents, and I arrogantly opened my Bible, pointedto a verse at random, and said, “There’s yourmessage from God.” The young man gavearrogance right back to me, opening the Bibleto another page and saying, “That’s for you.”You know what the passage was? “I am crucifiedwith Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, butChrist liveth in me: and the life which I now livein the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God,Who loved me, and gave Himself for me.”– Galatians 2:20I cried. I cried because I realized in thatmoment that no matter how many times He isdisappointed, He continues to love us. Nomatter how flawed and “not good enough” weare, He sacrificed His son for us. In thatmoment, I understood that God the Father’slove is unconditional and everlasting. And Irealized that I could have that special closenesswith God the Father that I did not have withmy natural father.Do you have, or did you have, a troubledrelationship with your earthly father? Thenyou, too, might have trouble accepting theidea of God’s eternal love. I’d like to suggestthat on this Father’s Day, you do what you canto repair and re-build that relationship. If yourfather has passed on, maybe you can work onaccepting that the relationship was flawedand human, and not let it keep you fromcloseness with God.Today I’m blessed to have my first-borndaughter Monica close to me. We often rideour horses together, and this is very special, because when she was growing up I was trav-eling all over the world. I missed so much inher early life, and feel so fortunate to have timenow with this precious young woman. I can’treclaim the years, but I can try every day to lether know I love her not for what she does ordoesn’t do, but just because she is.God the Father loves us that way: just becausewe are, with all our shortcomings. Whenyou “get” this, my hope for you is that youalso realize there’s no reason not to loveHim back. 1-800-991-7116 June 2010 l 23“... no matter how many times Heis disappointed, He continues tolove us... God the Father’s love isunconditional and everlasting.”

During one bloodtest, the doctor found that I had a deficiency inred blood cells, which made me tired. A lady in ourchurch suggested Sublingual B-12, so I startedtaking it. At my next blood test, this deficiencydidn’t show up at all, and my energy was back! Imentioned Sublingual B-12 to my daughter. Shehas a 21-year-old girl with reading and learningdifficulties. Now my granddaughter is takingSublingual B-12 and can hardly live without it. Afterseeing how your other products have helped myson, I decided ‘What did I have to lose?’ As soon as Istarted taking Energy Now! I had more energy bothat work and at home. I also didn’t fall asleep untilI wanted to. Finally I have found something thathelps me without making me jittery or nervous. Iam so glad to feel in control of my life again.”Marty S., Member – St. Petersburg, FL“Being 50+ has never felt better.”“Wellavoh has exceeded my expectations asa men’s supplement. I don’t believe the label‘multi-vitamin’ does justice to this multi-nutrient.It provides complete wellness through a multi-faceted vitamin supplement. Now, I take Wellavohand about three ounces of Nopalea each day. Justa few dollars a day in Sonoran Bloom productsprovide me wellness at an affordable cost, aboutthe same price as a soda, bag of chips and candybar we often think nothing of buying.Being 50+ has never felt better. I decided to try Nopalea to help this problem,as well as another problem with painful arches. Aftercompleting the Nopalea Loading Phase, the arches inmy feet became less painful. That was good, but then I had to deal with my liver. The enzyme numbers hadgone from 150 to 449 in one year. After drinking Nopalea for several months, Ihad lab work done again. I was elated to see that the numbers had dramaticallystabilized in only two months. I now know that I’m on the right track.I also developed a serious cough. My doctor gave me an inhaler that includedsteroids, but that didn’t help. Nopalea is already helping with my cough, and Ijust have to be patient because it took a long time for my health problems todevelop. That is my story and since I have only been on my Nopalea journey ashort time, I have even bigger expectations as I continue to enjoy the results fromthis delicious wellness drink.”*Linda Z., Affiliate Member – Winkler, MB, Canada“... the results were amazing.”“I’m a 62-year-old retired firefighter. I spent 34 years inthe fire service. I always stayed fit by working out andjogging. I even competed in bodybuilding shows forseven years. After all those years of firefighting, my bodywas feeling the effects. My left knee hurt most of thetime – it caused me to walk with a limp. I had pain in myright shoulder. Sometimes the pain was so intense,I would have to use my left arm. Finally, in the last six months, I would wake up at night with hip pain. Then mylife changed when I became a TriVita Member. I started taking Super SublingualB-12 – GREAT STUFF!Then I started hearing more about Nopalea. I was a bit skeptical at first, and thensaid, ‘Why not?’ I started taking one to two ounces in the morning and after threeweeks, the shoulder and hip pain were both completely gone. Thank you, TriVita.I plan to compete in a bodybuilding show this summer, thanks to Nopalea. I’llkeep you updated.”John L., Affiliate Member – Jacksonville Beach, FL

She’s been a professionalbarrel racer for 30 years and it’sreally taken a tollon her body.Paying the price foran active lifeLast summer was anespecially difficult time,Pat relates. “I had beenbarrel racing during theentire summer, traveling todifferent states to compete, but was in pain all the time.I had a hard time turning myhead. It hurt to sit, stand orlay down. This pain lingeredand when Christmas came around I was in evenmore pain because of all the extra work involvedwith wrapping presents and putting up aChristmas tree. I just didn’t think I’d make itthrough this hectic time.”Pat often has to handle everyday maintenanceduties. Horses need to be tended to and fenceshave to be repaired. “It used to hurt to lift balesof hay, and feed and water the horses,” Patremembers. “One day was especially bad, because one of the young horses tore the fencedown and I had to spend five hours fixing andstretching the fence. After I was done I was insuch pain I could hardly walk. 26 l VITAJOURNAL trivita.comMen’s Health Week occurs thisyear from June 14 to 22, andhopefully it will provide animportant wake-up call for many men. That’s because the overwhelmingweight of evidence shows that too manymen are failing the good health test 52weeks a year.It begins with such basics as seeing a doctor on aregular basis. According to a recent Centers forDisease Control and Prevention (CDC) report, women are 33% more likely than men to visita doctor. The negative health news for mendoesn’t end there. The Men’s Health Network(MHN) states that men die at significantlyhigher rates than women from the top 10 causesof death, including:• Heart disease• Cancer• Stroke• Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease• Accidents• Pneumonia and influenza• Diabetes• Suicide• Kidney disease• Chronic liver disease and cirrhosisMen also die younger than women by an averageof over five years. Why is that? According to JeanBonhomme, M.D., an MHN board member, “Anyperson who doesn’t regularly screen for majorhealth problems is at greater risk. For example, ifyou don’t get your cholesterol or blood pressurechecked when these levels are starting to rise inyour 20s or 30s, what do you think is going tohappen when you’re 50?” Bonhomme also placespart of the blame on a society which expects boysto be tough and ignore pain. However, when thoseboys become men, that little pain can get worse orsignal an even more serious issue. The five top preventable and treatablecauses of death1. Heart diseaseAlthough heart disease is the leading killer ofboth men and women, almost twice as many meneventually die from it. According to the CDC,one in four men has some form of heart disease.Men often tend to develop heart disease at anearlier age than women. So, making the rightlifestyle choices (eating healthier and exercisingmore) can help men reduce heart disease risk.2. StrokeStroke is the third leading killer in the countryafter heart disease and all forms of cancer. The incidence rate of stroke is 1.25 timesgreater in men than in women. One of themost important risk factors for stroke is highblood pressure and managing it is a crucialstroke prevention factor. Once again, the samelifestyle choices that reduce the risk of heartdisease can also lower stroke risk.3. Suicide and depressionThe Men’s Health Network reports that men arefour times more likely to commit suicide thanwomen. They are often less likely to show depres-sion and recognize they’re in trouble. To help menwith depression and to reduce suicide risk, doctors, loved ones and men themselves need to dealhonestly and openly with depression andsuicidal impulses.4. Lung cancerLung cancer is the leading cancer killer for bothmen and women, claiming more lives thanprostate, colon and breast cancer combined.Tobacco products are responsible for 90% oflung cancer cases. So, if you’re a smoker, stopnow and your chances of getting lung cancerbegin to diminish.5. Prostate cancerProstate cancer is the most common cancer foundin men. The good news is that prostate cancer istreatable if found in early stages. The AmericanCancer Society suggests that healthy men have aprostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test anddigital rectal exam each year after age 50. Menwho are at high risk, such as African-Americans,or those with a family history of prostate cancer, should begin testing earlier. If more men speak up about their health concernsand take better care of themselves, there will nolonger be a “silent crisis.” Both men and theirloved ones will then be able to enjoy all thebenefits of a longer, healthier life.Men’s health:the silent crisisWhy men die at higher rates than womenof the top causes of death
