Current Ethical Issues in Business
Introduction
Through time there has been various factors that have affected how business is
conducted today. Issues concerning economic conditions, electronic commerce,
technology, ethics, and workforce diversity all played a role in altering business
operation. In general, how a company conducts itself among its community directly
affects its success.
Wal-Mart is the largest retailer in the world and even they are not exempt from
performing ethically. In 2008, Wal-Mart lost up to $352 million in settlements across
the United States. There were 63 law suits from workers claiming that they were
cheated on their pay. By the last settlement, Wal-Mart recognized that they did
actually act unethically.
This paper will discuss the ethical issues violated by Wal-Mart, what parties were
involved in particular, and the impact of violations. Furthermore, there are
discussions of how the issues with Wal-Mart affected society as a whole. Finally,
there is a proposal about revised ethical standards and communication methods
that are capable of preventing this issue to occur again in the future.
Overview of Ethical Issue
It is apparent that Wal-Mart acted unethical in this particular situation. However, it
doesn’t appear that they had that intention initially. Wal-Mart hired managers in
order to manage each stores and the employees contained in the stores.
Consequently, some of the managers proceeded to abuse the employees and
eventually lead them to act out against the abuse. Managers were forcing
employees to work off the clock and even went to the extent of manipulating time
cards. As the managers changed the time cards they only considered the
immediate rewards without acknowledging that there would be severe
consequences later on. The later results would mean that Wal-Mart would face all
the consequences while the self fish managers avoided everything. It’s very clear
that the managers aimed to maximize there man power while not affecting the
stores payroll. The reports in general showed that Wal-Mart did not practice any
ethical sense. The theory is that managers were all faced with a payroll quota that
they had to meet. Its believed that they did anything within there power so that the
store would not surpass the monthly budget. However, a store still requires a
certain amount of man power to run efficiently. As a result, managers took an
unethical approach to meet there quotas. Wal-Mart would later have to face with
several employees joining together to make legal cases about the abuse. The
company ended up facing a series of law suits but the managers were able to
make more money by reaching there budget.
This series of unethical conflicts by Wal-Mart built a great distrust within the
community and lost there integrity. Furthermore, company stocks are subject to
drop so stock holders are going to be losing a significant amount of money. Ideally,
as the news spread that Wal-Mart conducts business in this manner, they will
progressively see there customer base decrease. Eventually, Wal-Mart will be
forced to raise prices so that they can survive as a business. An act which will
further spoil there popularity among the community. Wal-Mart performed
unethically because they made a huge mistake when related employees to the
business. T
