2. The Importance of Reading
• Reading is essential for the learning
process in Primary.
• Children need to read for intellectual,
emotional and communication skills.
• Reading for pleasure is the key to
academic success. They need to acquire
that habit.
4. “Reading takes us places”
• Through books we can "travel" to
other countries, learn about other
cultures and experience other people's
stories and feelings.
• International mindedness & openminded spirit.
5. “My library…
a real passport to the world”
• Students use a "Reading Passport" to
keep track of the places/books they
have traveled to.
• We offer them a wide range of stories
from different countries and editors, in
different languages, as destinations.
6. MOTIVATE them!
• Our challenge is traveling around
the world: 40.000km.
• 1 book = 5 km
• Our goal: 8.000 books read by all
Primary students during one course.
7. What kind of books?
• Especialy Fiction books.
• Students are free to choose the books
(with the guidance of librarians and
teachers).
• Accelerated Reader informs us of students´
reading level and identifies students that are
reading at a lower level age-wise. This gives us
the opportunity for early intervention.
8. Reading Evidences
1. Reading comprehension tests in the
Accelerated Reader platform.
2. Reading comprehension tests in the
Spanish Ranopla website.
3. Make a SOUVENIR, bring a postcard from
the "journey": a drawing and a summary.
4. Many other writing exercises.
9. Strategies
• “Design a logo for the Travel Agency-Library”
contest.
• The individual continuum in every classroom.
• A display with the number of books read by
cycles and the total number in Primary.
• Rewards! A diploma for every student that
reads the first 10 books and then a pin for
reaching 20, 40, 60...
12. Transdisciplinary Focus
1. We use MATHS to calculate the km, the
distances to different destinations.
2. WRITING and VOCABULARY practice for the
reading comprehensions.
3. GEOGRAPHY to learn about the countries
they are crossing through their big journey.
4. CULTURAL aspects according to the stories
and places they read about.
13. Final ideas
• The more kids read, the better they read and the
more pleasure they get out of reading.
• Very helpful to identify children with reading
difficulties and to engage reluctant readers.
• Great project to put Reading, Writing and Maths
together.
• Individual progress and recognition, not
competition between groups.
