Rupani Govt extends deadline to avail agri scheme benefits till April 30
First India News
Gandhinagar: Keep-
ing the interests of
the farmers at heart,
the Viay Rupani Gov-
ernment wishes that
the maximum bene-
fits of various agri-
culture schemes
reaches most farmers
and so has extended
the deadline to file on-
line forms for these
schemes till April 30.
Chief Minister Vijay
Rupani has taken one
more step to reach out
to farmers. Normally to
avail any government
scheme, one has to ap-
ply within stipulated
time period and this has
to be March 31 of the
year. But, this time the
government has extend-
ed the deadline to file
forms till April 30.
To avail the agricul-
ture scheme benefits,
the farmers will have
to visit www.ikhedut.
gujarat.gov.in and file
forms online.
The state govern-
ment in its 2020-21 budg-
et has allocated Rs 7,423
crore for agriculture,
farmers welfare and co-
operatives. Last year
when the farmers had
suffered huge loss due
to unseasonal rains, the
state government had
announced the biggest
ever agricultural pack-
age of Rs 3,795 crore.
Farmers of the
State avail short term
crop loans of approx-
imately Rs 39,000
crore every year from
the cooperative as
well as nationalized
banks. The entire in-
terest component of
the loan is borne
jointly by the State
and the Central gov-
ernments. Thus,
farmers of Gujarat
avail crop-loan at zero
per cent interest. A
provision of Rs 1,000
crore has been made
for this purpose.
It has allocated Rs 235
crore to provide subven-
tion to 29,000 farmers
for procuring tractors
and to 32,000 farmers for
procuring various im-
plements under farm
mechanization. It has
allocated of Rs 12 crore
for setting up Gujarat
Organic Agricultural
University, the first in
the country at Halol in
Panchmahal District.
The state govern-
ment made provision
of Rs 750 crore for in-
tensifying agricultur-
al research and edu-
cational programme
at Agricultural Uni-
versity.
The Rupani govern-
ment is thoughtfully
giving priority to the
agriculture sector as it
wishes to meet the aspi-
rations of farmers. So,
on the farmers demand
it has decided to lay
down infrastructure to
provide power supply to
agriculture consumer
during day time. For
this, it has planned to
invest Rs 3,500 crore in
the next three years and
for the 2020-21 financial
year it has made provi-
sion of Rs 500 crore.
Last Friday, the
Chief Minister, on the
floor of the House, as-
sured that farmers
living on the bounda-
ries of sanctuary will
be accorded priority
in day time power
supply scheme.Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. —FILE PHOTO

Prime Minister is to
undergo his second
kidney transplanta-

March 4. Prime Minis-

pressed that he looks
forward to working
with KP Sharma Oli.
Oli will reportedly be
admitted to the Tribhu-
wan University Teach-
ing Hospital (TUTH) in
Maharajgung on Mon-

ney transplant, Nepal
Communist Party
(NCP) Spokesperson
Narayankaji Shrestha
had said.
67-year-old Oli had
last undergone a kid-
ney transplant in In-
dia in 2007 after both
his kidneys failed to
function. Since then,
he has travelled
abroad on several oc-
casions for health-
checkups and has un-
dergone multiple
rounds of dialysis.
Oli had undergone an
appendicitis surgery in
November 2019 and was
kept on the ventilator
for a while. It was after
his condition improved
that he was taken off of
the ventilator. The Nep-
alese PM had also un-
dergone regular dialy-
sis as his transplanted
kidney has stopped
functioning. He spent
about 10 days in the hos-
pital. Also, the Nepal
PM had undergone four
cycles of hemodialysis
(procedure of purifying
the blood of a person
whose kidneys aren’t
working normally) at

SUSTAINING ALL LIFE ON EARTH
O
n 20 December 2013, at its 68th
session, the United Nations Gen-
eral Assembly (UNGA) pro-
claimed 3 March – the day of sig-
nature of the Convention on International
Trade in Endangered Species of Wild
Fauna and Flora (CITES) in 1973 – as UN
World Wildlife Day to celebrate and raise
awareness of the world’s wild animals and
plants.
The UNGA resolution also designated
the CITES Secretariat as the facilitator for
the global observance of this special day
for wildlife on the UN calendar. World
Wildlife Day has now become the most im-
portant global annual event dedicated to
wildlife.
World Wildlife Day will be celebrated in
2020 under the theme “Sustaining all life
on Earth”, encompassing all wild animal
and plant species as key components of the
world’s biodiversity. This aligns with UN
Sustainable Development Goals 1, 12, 14
and 15, and their wide-ranging commit-
ments on alleviating poverty, ensuring sus-
tainable use of resources, and on conserv-
ing life both on land and below water to
halt biodiversity loss.
Earth is home to countless species of
fauna and flora – too many to even attempt
counting. This rich diversity, and the bil-
lions of years during which its myriad ele-
ments have interacted, are precisely what
has made our planet inhabitable for all
living creatures, including humans. His-
torically, we have depended on the con-
stant interplay and interlinkages between
all elements of the biosphere for all our
needs: the air we breathe, the food we eat,
the energy we use, and the materials we
need for all purposes. However, unsustain-
able human activities and overexploita-
tion of the species and natural resources
that make up the habitats and ecosystems
of all wildlife are imperiling the world’s
biodiversity. Nearly a quarter of all species
are presently at risk of going extinct in the
coming decades, and their demise would
only speed up the disappearance of count-
less others, putting us in danger as well.
On World Wildlife Day, we will celebrate
the special place of wild plants and ani-
mals in their many varied and beautiful
forms as a component of the world’s bio-
logical diversity. We will work to raise
awareness of the multitude of benefits of
wildlife to people, particularly to those
communities who live in closest proximity
to it, and we will discuss the threats they
are facing and the urgent need for govern-
ments, civil society, private sector actors
and individuals to add their voices and
take actions to help conserve wildlife and
ensure its continued use is sustainable.

of tigers especially the endangered Bengal
Tiger and the rare White Tiger. Madhya
Pradesh ranks first in the country with 526
tigers as per the results of the All India Ti-
ger Assessment declared on July 29, 2019.
Sustained tiger conservation efforts have
paidrichdividendsinMPwherethepopula-
tion of the big cat registered a healthy rise
of 218 in four years from 308 tigers in 2014
to 526 in the 2018 census.
The State has six tiger reserves (combin-
ing parts of National Parks and Wildlife
Sanctuaries) namely Kanha, Pench, Sat-
pura, Bandhavgarh, Panna and Sanjay.
The state also plans to create around 11
more protected areas within the state from
the current numbers of 24 wildlife sanctu-
aries and 11 national parks.
“Madhya Pradesh is referred to as wild-
life state of India with numerous sanctuar-
ies and reserves. At a time where the num-
bers of many animal species are declining,
Madhya Pradesh has played a pivotal part
in India’s wildlife conservation programs.
As the World Wildlife Day approaches on
March 3, we would like to reiterate our
commitment to protecting endangered
wildlife, especially tigers through a scien-
tific, planned and people-centric approach
with strict enforcement guidelines and
team support,” said Faiz Ahmed Kidwai
(IAS), Secretary Tourism, Govt of Mad-
hya Pradesh and Managing Director, Mad-
hya Pradesh Tourism Board.
“From preserving tiger population, to
being the state with the highest leopard,
vultures and gharial (an ‘endemic’ croco-
dile species) population to having success-
fully increased the population of the
highly endangered Barasingha (a hard
ground swamp deer), Madhya Pradesh
has come a long way in protecting the
natural order and habitat for animals. It
has implemented many important conser-
vation policies and ensured a crackdown
on poaching,” he further added.
Six of the 11 national parks of Madhya
Pradesh are also integrated with Project
Tiger, a conservation programme that
was launched in 1973 by the Central Gov-
ernment when the tiger numbers had
dwindled so dramatically that there were
fears that the big cat was in danger of ex-
tinction.

KALSARIA TO BE CONG RS CANDIDATE?
Tihar authorities, during
the hearing, said the ball
is in the government's
court after the filing of the
mercy petition, and the
judge has no role for now.
They said the President
will seek a status report
from the jail on Pawan's
mercy plea and when that
happens, it will suo motu
stay the execution.
The court had on
February 17Â ordered that
the four convicts-Mukesh
Kumar Singh (32), Pawan
Gupta (25)Vinay Kumar
Sharma (26) and Akshay
Kumar Singh (31) —be
hanged on March 3 after
it issued fresh death
warrants,observing that
deferring the execution
any further would be
"sacrilegious" to the
rights of the victim for
expeditious justice.
This was for the third
time that the death
warrants were issued by
the court against them.
The court had noted that
death warrants were earlier
issued on January 7 and
the execution was later
deferred twice- on January
17 and January 31.
The first date of
execution, January
22, was postponed to
February 1 by a January
17 court order. Then, the
trial court on January
31, stayed, 'till further
orders' the execution of
the four convicts as they
had not exhausted all
their legal remedies.
CASE
IN
POINT
New Delhi: Delhi judge Dhar-
mendra Rana on Monday,
stopped the execution of the
four Delhi gang-rape con-
victs, barely 13 hours before
the four were to walk to the
gallows at Tihar prison to-
day morning.
The judge ruled that a last-
minute mercy petition filed
by Pawan Gupta - the last of
the four to file the plea - is
still pending with Rashtra-
pati Bhavan.
“I am of the opinion that the
death sentence cannot be exe-
cuted pending the disposal of
the mercy petition of the con-
vict. It is hereby directed that
the execution of death warrants
against all the convicts sched-
uled for 03.03.2020 at 6 am if de-
ferred till further orders,”
the judge said in his order.
Reacting to stay on
the executions for the
third time, the victim’s
mother blamed the
“failure of the system
and the government.”
“This is the failure of
the system and the gov-
ernment which has led to
the delay of the execu-
tion. Till the time the con-
victs are not hanged, Iwill
not be relieved.”she said.
Earlier on Monday, the judge
had rejected Pawan’s request to
stop the executions yet again
but reserved the order because
the convict had petitioned the
President to commute his death
sentence to life imprisonment.
Pawan Gupta’s lawyer AP
Singh had filed the mercy plea
shortly after the Supreme
Court dismissed the con-
vict’s curative petition Mon-
day morning. A curative
petition is the last judicial
resort available to a convict
for redressal against the fi-
nal judgment.
The Supreme Court had
dismissed curative petitions
filed by two other convicts,
Mukesh Singh and Vinay
Sharma on January 14. The
curative petition filed by the
third convict, Akshay Thakur
was dismissed on January 30.
Earlier on Monday, Justice
Rana also underlined during
the hearing that Pawan Gup-
ta had missed the seven-day
deadline that the Delhi High
Court had set last month for
the convicts to avail their le-
gal remedies.
The court had first issued
the death warrant against
the four convicts on January
7, 2020 and scheduled their
execution on January 22.
The execution date was post-
poned twice, first to Febru-
ary 1 and then to March 3.
In December 2012, five men
and a juvenile had raped and
brutalised a young para-medic
student in a moving bus in Delhi
before throwing her and a male
friend out of the vehicle. The
victim later died of injuries a
fortnight later in a Singapore
hospital. One of the accused

If you happen to meet Deputy CM Nitin Patel,
you would probably think that he is a jolly good
fellow. But his quick temper might be his folly. He
recently lost his temper at a social function, while
he was surrounded by MLAs and the media. Talking
to someone about the General Resolution and the
LRD exam, the minister was seen exchanging angry
words. Well, temper is a fickle thing, it can flare at

BLISSFUL IGNORANCE
We all know that the State Assembly session
is underway these days. But it’s more like a
classroom full of people. Few members of the House
asked questions like what medicine should be taken
if someone has elephant leg? What benefits can one
avail of by setting up a unit in GIDC? Seems like
our MLAs themselves are unaware of the schemes
being run by the government. May God grant them
enlightenment (at least about the schemes).

Ahmedabad: A wom-
an has filed a complaint
at Sarkhej police sta-
tion against her hus-
band Kunal Soni, a
resident of Bopal, for
allegedly cheating on
her by having an extra-
marital affair with an-
other woman.
In her complaint, Pri-
yanka Soni, said that
her husband of eight
years Kunal had been
involved in several ex-
tramarital affairs. The
couple have a 4-year-old
daughter and have been
married since 2012. Ini-
tially, after discovering
her husband’s infidelity,
she left him and moved
out of their house. Lat-
er, she received written
assurance from her hus-
band that he would
change his ways. How-
ever, she allegedly later
found out that he was
still involved in extra-
marital affairs.
The woman also reg-
istered a complaint
against her father-in-
law, Rajendrabhai Soni
who allegedly abused
and asked her to leave.
If convicted, the charge
falls under the Domes-
tic Violence Act.

Over 9,000 complaints of
dry law violation in 2 years
First India News
Gandhinagar: Even as
there have been several
recent cases of ram-
pant violation of the
dry laws, the State re-
ceived as many as 9,081
complaints during the
last two years.
Giving information
to Opposition ques-
tions on the floor of the
State Assembly on
Monday, the State
Home Department sub-
mitted that Ahmedabad
district reported as
many as 4,984 com-
plaints in two years,
while Surat district has
received 1,980 com-
plaints.
The Opposition
MLAs slammed the
government stating
that the latter claimed
of strict prohibition
laws in the State, visu-
als of big liquor par-
ties have come out of
Kutch and Surat in the
last 48 hours.
According to data re-
leased by the State Gov-
ernment, after
Ahmedabad and Surat,
Mehsana district re-
ceived 328 complaints,
while 225 complaints
have been received
from the Bharuch dis-
trict. As many as 258
complaints have been
received from Va-
dodara district. There
are many other dis-
tricts which have re-
ceived on an average
100 complaints during
this time.
It may be recalled
that Rajasthan Chief
Minister Ashok Gehlot
from the Congress par-
ty has often scoffed at
the Gujarat Govern-
ment’s claims that the
State practises prohibi-
tion strictly.
Among the other dis-
tricts, even Gandhina-
gar district -- which is
the State’s headquar-
ters -- received 145 com-
plaints during the last
two years, while ther
were 128 complaints
from Gir Somnath, 199
in Junagadh, 104 in Ra-
jkot and 155 in Sabar-
kantha district.
As many as 39 people out of the 52 were on Monday sent to judicial custody for 14 days
First India News
Surat: As many as 39
people from the 52, who
were caught by the po-
lice from a booze party
on Saturday, were sent
to judicial custody of 14
days following a squab-
ble between parents of
the accused youths and
the police.
The parents indulged
in a verbal spat when
one of the accused’s ad-
vocates appealed that
all the accused reached
on the spot following a
Whatsapp message cir-
culated by the organis-
er. A message was cir-
culated about the party
on Whatsapp stating
that the party will last
till 10.30 and liquor and
food was organised for
everyone at a charge of
Rs 2,300 per person.
The parents of the ac-
cused demanded to
meet judge. They
claimed that advocate
Viral Mehta of the or-
ganiser Gagan Dhingra
is trying to fix their chil-
dren in the case to save
his client.
Meanwhile, the po-
lice in their further in-
vestigations, nabbed the
boottlegger who sup-
plied the liquor in the
party. Around 78 bottles
of liquor was supplied
along with beer of Rs
250 per bottle. Organiz-
er Dhingra purchased
liquor from Viren Patel
and brought to the party
venue in his car. He was
associated by his friend
Suketu. The police are
looking for another
bootlegger from Magda-
lla area who supplied
another consignment to
the party.
However, some of the
parents thanked the po-
lice. One of them said,
“Police saved my daugh-
ter. I was unaware about
the party. Every one was
inebriated in the party.
In such a situation, be-
cause of the police the
girls were safe.” This
was the second major
liquor haul by the police
in the city. Earlier,
around 21 women were
detainedbyUmrapolice
on December 21. Here
liquor was served at a
kitty party. All the wom-
en were elite families of

Dahod: The state gov-
ernmentrecentlyadmit-
ted to a shortage of spe-
cialized doctors in rural
and backward areas. A
severe dearth of medi-
cal officers in these are-
as has left local people
helpless when it comes
to receiving proper med-
ical care. Coming to the
rescue of pregnant
women in Dahod, a re-
moteandbackwardarea
dominated by adivasis,
is Dr Kalsibhai Damor.
A gynaecologist by pro-
fession, Dr Damor offers
free consultations and
even medication to trib-
al women on the ninth
day of every month. He
has provided medical
care to over 8,000 adivasi
women so far.
On his unique initia-
tive, Dr Damor said, “I
started this service (for
tribal women) after
Prime Minister Naren-
dra Modi appealed to
practising doctors to
treat patients free of
cost once a month. So I
made up my mind to do
just that and have never
looked back since.”
Belonging to a very
humble tribal family, Dr
Damor grew up in Da-
hod, where he faced
many hardships during
his childhood. After
earning his medical de-
gree, he first he joined a
government hospital in
Dahod and treated adi-
vasis. Having experi-
enced hardships him-
self, he sympathized
with the plight of adiva-
sis in the area. This
compelled him to quit
his job and start his own
private hospital.
The idea behind the
new venture was the
scheme under which he
would provide medical
consultations and medi-
cation to pregnant adi-
vasiwomenontheninth
day of every month.
Ever since the scheme
was initiated, word of
Dr Damor’s humanity
has reached the ears of
adivasis far and wide.
Every month, at least
200 women descend on
his clinic for consulta-
tion. According to the
doctor, the haemoglobin
level of adivasi women
may be the lowest when
compared to women be-
longingtoothercommu-
nities. “I have operated
on and given birth to
babies of an adivasi
woman whose haemo-
globin was between
1-1.5%, which was
shockinglylow,”hesaid.

First India News
Surat: At least eight
people were killed and
over 20 others injured in
a major accident involv-
ing three vehicles, in-
cluding a State Trans-
port bus, on the national
highway in Tapi district
in South Gujarat on
Monday.
Police sources
claimed the death toll is
likely to increase to over
10. The tragic accident
occurred when a State
Transport bus collided
with a speeding tanker
and another four-wheel-

The bus was heading
towards Tapi through
National Highway 53

Just then, a four-wheel-
er coming behind the
bus rammed into it.
Around 25 injured
people were rushed to
the nearest hospital
with the help of 108
emergency sevices. Lo-
cals rushed to the spot
and managed to rescue
the injured from the bus

from Surat district. “It
collided with the tanker
head on while another
vehicle, a Sports Utility
Vehicle (SUV),” he said.
The inspector did not
rule out the possibility
of rise in the death toll.
According to reports
from the Gujarat State
Road Transport Corpo-
ration (GSRTC), the bus
was on the route from
Kushalgadh to Ukai
when the accident oc-
cured near Doshwada

Ahmedabad: Following
the announcement about
a cutback in the number
of engineering seats by
over 9,500, the state gov-
ernment has stated that a
Government Resolution
(GR) may add 510 engi-
neering diploma and de-

move comes after the
government had decided
to close down nearly

Issued on Saturday, the
resolution also states that
the number of sanc-

maining colleges is to
remain the same as men-
tioned in February and
will follow the AICTE ad-

JUSTICE
DELAYED
ONCE AGAIN
cat has nine lives and it appears
that Nirbhaya’s rapists and killers
too have a charmed life like the
feline. They know their lives
hang by a thread yet, taking
advantage of legal loopholes, the quartet
of Pawan Gupta, Akshay Kumar Singh,
Mukesh Kumar, and Vinay Kumar Shar-
ma have been able to once again evade the
noose that awaits them in Tihar jail.
Their scheduled hanging at 6 a.m. tomorrow
has been deferred because, as the judge said,
they have not exhausted all their legal op-
tions. Pawan Gupta’s mercy petition is pend-
ing with President Ram Nath Kovind.
“The condemned convict must not meet
his creator with a grievance in his bosom
that the courts of this country have not
acted fairly in granting him an opportu-
nity to exhaust his legal remedies,” the
Patiala House court in Delhi said. The
hanging had earlier been deferred on
January 22 and February 1.
Pawan Gupta (25) and others, who have
been filing petitions separately to buy time
and delay the inevitable, waited for the Su-
preme Court to decide on his curative peti-
tion. After the Apex Court dismissed the peti-
tion on Monday morning, Gupta filed his
mercy petition and moved Patiala House
court praying for deferment of his execution.
An upset prosecution lawyer Seema
Kushwaha said, “Can’t the court under-
stand the manipulation of law? Our sys-
tem is completely rotten. It takes years to
get justice. We have to fix it together.”
The Central govt moved the SC last month
seeking change in laws which, it said, were
skewed in criminals’ favour. The delaying
tactic has been used despite the Delhi HC giv-
ing them a week’s time last month to exhaust
all their legal remedies.
Nirbhaya’s mother Asha Devi, who has
been relentless in her pursuit of justice for
her daughter, was distressed by the develop-
ment and called it “delaying tactics” as she
asked the court about her rights as the vic-
tim’s mother. On Monday, the distraught
mother said, “She was savagely raped and
thrown on the streets. Her intestines
were ripped out. And all these courts are
sitting and watching tamasha.”
On December 16, 2012, a paramedical stu-
dent was assaulted and tortured brutally by
these men. She died a few days later. Media
named her Nirbhaya. Their partners in the
gruesome crime were an 18-year-old and
the main accused Ram Singh. The teen-
ager was released after three years in a
reform home, while Ram Singh commit-
ted suicide in Tihar.
A law was specially formulated after the hei-
nous crime. The Criminal Law (Amendment)
Act 2013 (Nirbhaya Act) was legislation passed
byparliamenttoensurejusticetothevictimsof
sexual assault, harassment, stalking, etc. That
does not seem to be happening, as the convicts
have been able to dodge the noose a third time.

US$7.3 billion (A$11 bil-

it appears the lucrative

PAGE TO SCREEN
TO STAGE
Since the end of the belov-
ed series (the last book in
2007 and film in 2011), there
have been two spin-off sto-
ries: the film Fantastic
Beasts and Where to Find
Them, and the play Harry
Potter and The Cursed
Child, both released in
2016. The film’s sequel
Fantastic Beasts: The
Crimes of Grindelwald
was released in 2018.
The first Fantastic
Beasts film performed
reasonably well at the
box office, grossing
US$814 million world-
wide (A$1.2 billion),
which is within the earn-
ings range of the first
eight Harry Potter films.
However, the Fantastic
Beasts sequel resulted in
less box office revenue
than the first, at US$654
million (A$1 billion) glob-
ally, the lowest grossing of
all the “Harry-verse” films.
Subsequent questions
have been raised about
how the third planned film
will perform, let alone the
rest of the five-film series
that had previously been
mooted.
The Harry Potter and
the Cursed Child play is
broadly considered a
West End and Broadway
success and has toured
internationally. Despite
the huge amount of money
invested and the creative
approach taken in promot-
ing the production, ticket
sales have seen a consider-
able drop in the past year
(50% since their peak).
A TURNING POINT
In and of itself the play
was always going to be a
challenge: it is a two-part
production which means
theatre goers have to buy
two tickets and attend
twice. The producers say
it is intended to be seen
“in order on the same
day (matinee and even-
ing) or on two consecu-
tive evenings”.
This makes cost a prob-
lematic factor. It’s also a big
timecommitment.Theplay
has a rather daunting run-
ning time of around two
hours and 40 minutes each
time, making a total dura-
tion of just over five hours.
That’s likely to be too much
for many young fans.
And about those “young
fans”. When the Harry Pot-
ter and the Chamber of
Secrets movie debuted in
2002, 60% of the audience
was under the age of 15.
This cohort are now in
their 30s and this age group
is considered as “non-thea-
tre goers”. In the UK the
average theatre audience
member is 52. The average
age of the Broadway the-
atregoer is 42 years old.
Australian audiences at
musicals and operas were
last estimated to be pre-
dominantly between 55 and
74 years of age in 2014.

ECONOMY
IN THE
TIME OF AN
EPIDEMIC
CHINA ACCOUNTS FOR AROUND 18 PERCENT OF THE GLOBAL GDP (2019) COMPARED
TO 4 PERCENT WHEN THE SARS EPIDEMIC HAD BROKEN OUT IN 2003
hen the world’s second-largest
economy gets hit, the tremors
are bound to be felt by both large
economies such as the US and
developing ones like our own.
The coronavirus epidemic,
with its epicenter in Wuhan, the
capital of the busy province of
Hubei in China, has claimed
more than 3,000 lives and infect-
ed over 88,000. It has spread to
over 60 countries and sent
shockwaves through finan-
cial markets. Beyond its path-
ological implications, lies its
impact on the global economy.
IMPACT ON INDIA
The trade between China and
India is worth $87 billion, of
which we import goods worth
$70 billion from China. It in-
cludes everything from electric
componentsandmachines,med-
ical instruments and pharma
raw materials, vehicles and auto
parts,ironandsteelcomponents
to nuclear machinery.
While China takes 5.1 per-
centof ourtotalexports,inthe
form of cotton, salt and organ-
ic chemicals, and mineral and
metal ores among others, we
get 13.7 percent of our total
imports from China alone.
Needless to say then, when
our second-largest trading part-
ner hits the brakes on its facto-
ry output, companies in India
break into a sweat.
Wemayhavepushedforsmart-
phonemanufacturerstoincrease
their domestic production, but
they still depend on China for
theircomponents.Otherelectron-
ic goods manufacturers would
also be facing production issues.
A supply shortfall in consum-
er electrical and electronic
goods in India (either due to
coronavirus-led Chinese cuts or
our economic slowdown) would
also trouble online sales, as
they form a sizable portion of
e-commerce goods sales.
Pharma companies bring
in key raw ingredients from
China to make medicines.
Automobile manufacturers,
too, are heavily dependent
for their components on
their Chinese suppliers.
However, the Chinese New
Year in January-February
would have proved to be a great-
er boon than usual as compa-
nies would have stocked up by
December last year, anticipat-
ing the Chinese holiday season.
The extra stock will act as a
cushion for some weeks till
March, as will India’s weak con-
sumer demand. But if the Cov-
id-19 virus continues its ram-
page, the second quarter could
see more manufacturing dis-
ruption in this slowdown.
GOODS AND SERVICES
Goods and services across the
world are suffering the after-
math of the quick spread of the
Covid-19 virus. Global exports
and imports and Chinese ex-
ports and imports are so inter-
twined that it is unavoidable.
The spillover of disruption
has been the most acute in Chi-
na’s neighbours as seen in their
monetary policy responses.
GOODS MOVEMENT
Shipping has been heavily af-
fected with curbs on movement
to stem the spread of the Cov-
id-19 virus.
Shipping companies have cut
back on their ships sailing from
China to the rest of the world,
carrying goods, to prevent the
virus from advancing to other
areas.
It has a direct bearing on
the world’s supply chain as
80 percent of global goods
trade by volume is trans-
ported in ships and China
itself houses seven of the
world’s 10 busiest container
sea-ports, says the United
Nations Conference on
Trade and Development. The
contagious coronavirus is a
threat to business infrastruc-
ture in adjoining countries as
well, as Singapore and South
Korea, too, have busy ports and
have seen the disease escalate.

Businesses are worried
about tepid demand as well

ply for existing demand, with
news of how even e-com-

precautions as Chinese sellers
cut back on their visibility and
promotions to limit orders.
Global GDP
The global GDP will be compro-
mised due to the economic fall-
out of the coronavirus. China
accounts for around 18 percent
of the global GDP (2019) com-
pared to 4 percent when the
Sars epidemic had broken out
in 2003. Chinese businesses
are now more ingrained in
global supply chains.
Sars had robbed China of 1
percent of its economic growth
in the eight months it had last-
ed. The coronavirus is expected
to shave off 1-2 percentage
points off China’s GDP growth
in the first quarter of 2020.

Dubai: Ankita Raina’s
red-hot form and Sania
Mirza’s assuring pres-
ence will give India a
much better shot at the
Play-offs place when the
six-team Fed Cup com-

from Tuesday.
Ankita has been in
tremendous form since
the start of the season,
winning two ITF sin-

She is placed at a ca-
reer-best 160 in the sin-
gles ranking chart but
during the Fed Cup the
gritty Ankita has al-
ways punched above
her weight, giving
tough times to formida-
ble opponents.
She would be captain
Vishal Uppal’s biggest
weapon apart from mul-
tiple-time doubles
Grand Slam champion
Sania Mirza, who is re-
turning to Fed Cup af-

The three-week delay
in the start of the tour-
nament due to Corona-
virus outbreak has giv-
en Sania a chance to
recover from her calf
injury which had forced
her to retire mid-way
from her Australian
Open women’s doubles
opener.
Her experience of
playing and winning at
the big stage will help
younger players in the
side in handling the
pressure situations
better.
“I had a good start to
the season, so I am con-
fident going into the
competition. And defi-
nitely Sania will inspire
all of us to give our best.
Her advise and tips will
be more than helpful,”
admitted Ankita.
Riya Bhatia has risen
in the ranks and her
new-found confidence
will be good for India’s
chances. Karman Kaur

Christchurch: New Zealand came out with
a brilliant performance, both with
bat and ball, as they defeated
India by seven wickets in
the second and final
Test at the Hagley Oval
on Monday, thereby
clinching the two-match
series 2-0.
After bundling out India for
mere 124 runs in the morning ses-
sion on Day Three, New Zealand
chased down the target riding on half
centuries from its openers Tom
Latham and Tom Blundell
Starting the post-lunch session at
46/0, Latham and Blundell didn’t allow
the Indian bowlers to make any in-
roads and collected runs at will. They
both shared 103-run opening stand be-
fore Latham (52) became the victim of
Umesh Yadav, who had him caught by
wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant.
Skipper Kane Williamson (5), also
couldn’’t contribute much with the
bat, just like the first innings, and was
undone by a brilliant delivery from
Jasprit Bumrah. Blundell, too, didn’t
stay long after his skipper’s depar-
ture and was bowled by Bumrah af-
ter scoring 55.
However, Ross Taylor (5*) and
Henry Nicholls (5*) completed the
formalities as the Black Caps won
the match in 36th over of their second
innings.
Earlier, starting the day at 90/6, the
Indian lower order, unlike that of the
Black Caps, failed to show any resist-
ance. The last four batsmen could add
just 34 runs as they got bowled out for
124, setting up a 132-run target for the
Kiwis. Kyle was declared Player of the

A disappointed Virat
Kohli on Monday ad-
mitted that his side was
“completely outplayed” by
New Zealand in the two-Test
series and they can’t live in
denial about “not being brave
enough” to counter adverse
conditions. The Indian batting
was in complete shambles
in the two-Test series and
the skipper said that with a
packed schedule, the team
management will have to
find solutions despite time
constraints.
“Obviously quite disappoint-
ed with how we played in this
series. I feel like we were com-
pletely outplayed in this series,”
the Indian captain was honest
and forthright in his assessment
following the seven-wicket loss
in the second Test here.
“We obviously didn’t play
the kind of cricket we do as a
team. The thing to take away
from here is to not shy away
from things that have gone
wrong and instead address
them straight up, and not be in
denial,” he said. Asked to point
out what exactly went wrong,
Kohli felt the outlook towards a
series in adverse conditions was
“not ideal”. —Agencies

Gandhinagar: Over 1
lakh kg beef had been
seized from Gujarat
in the last two years,
the Legislative As-
sembly was told on
Monday, prompting
the opposition Con-
gress to question the
efficacy of the amend-
ed cow slaughter law
that was brought in
the year 2017.
During Question
Hour,stateHomeDepart-
ment stated that 1,00,490
kgs of beef had been
seized from different
parts of the state in the
years 2018 and 2019.With
the recovery of 55,162 kg
of beef Surat topped the
list, followed by
Ahmedabad (18,345 kgs)
and Dahod (5,934 kgs).
Responding to ques-
tions raised by Con-
gress MLAs about the
issue, Chief Minister
Vijay Rupani, who
also handles Home
portfolio, told the
House that 3,462 cows
and its progeny, such
as bullocks and calves,
were recovered alive
from the accused.
Senior Congress
MLA Shailesh Parmar
said the BJP govern-
ment was doing only
politics in the name of
cows.
“It appears that the
(2017) law is not im-
plemented effectively.
That is the reason
why over 1 lakh kgs of
beef had been seized
in the last two years.
You are doing only
politics in the name of
cows,” said Parmar.
At this, Minister of
State for Home Pradeep-
sinh Jadeja said the Op-
position was doing poli-
tics of appeasement.
“It’s painful that poli-
tics of appeasement is
being done over this is-
sue. Do you want to save
the accused? Are you
with cows or those who
slaughter them? That

Dwarka 34. During
the two years, 5,897

To avail the agricul- ture scheme benefits, the farmers will have to visit www.ikhedut. gujarat.gov.in and file forms online. The state govern- ment in its 2020-21 budg- et has allocated Rs 7,423 crore for agriculture, farmers welfare and co- operatives. Last year when the farmers had suffered huge loss due to unseasonal rains, the state government had announced the biggest ever agricultural pack- age of Rs 3,795 crore. Farmers of the State avail short term crop loans of approx- imately Rs 39,000 crore every year from the cooperative as well as nationalized banks. The entire in- terest component of the loan is borne jointly by the State and the Central gov- ernments. Thus, farmers of Gujarat avail crop-loan at zero per cent interest. A provision of Rs 1,000 crore has been made for this purpose. It has allocated Rs 235 crore to provide subven- tion to 29,000 farmers for procuring tractors and to 32,000 farmers for procuring various im- plements under farm mechanization. It has allocated of Rs 12 crore for setting up Gujarat Organic Agricultural University, the first in the country at Halol in Panchmahal District. The state govern- ment made provision of Rs 750 crore for in- tensifying agricultur- al research and edu- cational programme at Agricultural Uni- versity. The Rupani govern- ment is thoughtfully giving priority to the agriculture sector as it wishes to meet the aspi- rations of farmers. So, on the farmers demand it has decided to lay down infrastructure to provide power supply to agriculture consumer during day time. For this, it has planned to invest Rs 3,500 crore in the next three years and for the 2020-21 financial year it has made provi- sion of Rs 500 crore. Last Friday, the Chief Minister, on the floor of the House, as- sured that farmers living on the bounda- ries of sanctuary will be accorded priority in day time power supply scheme.Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. —FILE PHOTO rime Min- ister Nar- endraModi on Monday wished a successful surgery and speedy recovery to his Nepalese coun- terpart KP Sharma Oli. Oli will reportedly be admitted to the Tribhu- wan University Teach- ing Hospital (TUTH) in Maharajgung on Mon- day itself for the kid- ney transplant, Nepal Communist Party (NCP) Spokesperson Narayankaji Shrestha had said. 67-year-old Oli had last undergone a kid- ney transplant in In- dia in 2007 after both his kidneys failed to function. Since then, he has travelled abroad on several oc- casions for health- checkups and has un- dergone multiple rounds of dialysis. Oli had undergone an appendicitis surgery in November 2019 and was kept on the ventilator for a while. It was after his condition improved that he was taken off of the ventilator. The Nep- alese PM had also un- dergone regular dialy- sis as his transplanted kidney has stopped functioning. He spent about 10 days in the hos- pital. The UNGA resolution also designated the CITES Secretariat as the facilitator for the global observance of this special day for wildlife on the UN calendar. World Wildlife Day has now become the most im- portant global annual event dedicated to wildlife. World Wildlife Day will be celebrated in 2020 under the theme “Sustaining all life on Earth”, encompassing all wild animal and plant species as key components of the world’s biodiversity. This aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals 1, 12, 14 and 15, and their wide-ranging commit- ments on alleviating poverty, ensuring sus- tainable use of resources, and on conserv- ing life both on land and below water to halt biodiversity loss. Earth is home to countless species of fauna and flora – too many to even attempt counting. This rich diversity, and the bil- lions of years during which its myriad ele- ments have interacted, are precisely what has made our planet inhabitable for all living creatures, including humans. His- torically, we have depended on the con- stant interplay and interlinkages between all elements of the biosphere for all our needs: the air we breathe, the food we eat, the energy we use, and the materials we need for all purposes. However, unsustain- able human activities and overexploita- tion of the species and natural resources that make up the habitats and ecosystems of all wildlife are imperiling the world’s biodiversity. Nearly a quarter of all species are presently at risk of going extinct in the coming decades, and their demise would only speed up the disappearance of count- less others, putting us in danger as well. On World Wildlife Day, we will celebrate the special place of wild plants and ani- mals in their many varied and beautiful forms as a component of the world’s bio- logical diversity. We will work to raise awareness of the multitude of benefits of wildlife to people, particularly to those communities who live in closest proximity to it, and we will discuss the threats they are facing and the urgent need for govern- ments, civil society, private sector actors and individuals to add their voices and take actions to help conserve wildlife and ensure its continued use is sustainable. The state also plans to create around 11 more protected areas within the state from the current numbers of 24 wildlife sanctu- aries and 11 national parks. “Madhya Pradesh is referred to as wild- life state of India with numerous sanctuar- ies and reserves. At a time where the num- bers of many animal species are declining, Madhya Pradesh has played a pivotal part in India’s wildlife conservation programs. As the World Wildlife Day approaches on March 3, we would like to reiterate our commitment to protecting endangered wildlife, especially tigers through a scien- tific, planned and people-centric approach with strict enforcement guidelines and team support,” said Faiz Ahmed Kidwai (IAS), Secretary Tourism, Govt of Mad- hya Pradesh and Managing Director, Mad- hya Pradesh Tourism Board. “From preserving tiger population, to being the state with the highest leopard, vultures and gharial (an ‘endemic’ croco- dile species) population to having success- fully increased the population of the highly endangered Barasingha (a hard ground swamp deer), Madhya Pradesh has come a long way in protecting the natural order and habitat for animals. It has implemented many important conser- vation policies and ensured a crackdown on poaching,” he further added. Six of the 11 national parks of Madhya Pradesh are also integrated with Project Tiger, a conservation programme that was launched in 1973 by the Central Gov- ernment when the tiger numbers had dwindled so dramatically that there were fears that the big cat was in danger of ex- tinction. Tihar authorities, during the hearing, said the ball is in the government's court after the filing of the mercy petition, and the judge has no role for now. They said the President will seek a status report from the jail on Pawan's mercy plea and when that happens, it will suo motu stay the execution. The court had on February 17Â ordered that the four convicts-Mukesh Kumar Singh (32), Pawan Gupta (25)Vinay Kumar Sharma (26) and Akshay Kumar Singh (31) —be hanged on March 3 after it issued fresh death warrants, observing that deferring the execution any further would be "sacrilegious" to the rights of the victim for expeditious justice. This was for the third time that the death warrants were issued by the court against them. The court had noted that death warrants were earlier issued on January 7 and the execution was later deferred twice- on January 17 and January 31. The first date of execution, January 22, was postponed to February 1 by a January 17 court order. Then, the trial court on January 31, stayed, 'till further orders' the execution of the four convicts as they had not exhausted all their legal remedies. CASE IN POINT New Delhi: Delhi judge Dhar- mendra Rana on Monday, stopped the execution of the four Delhi gang-rape con- victs, barely 13 hours before the four were to walk to the gallows at Tihar prison to- day morning. The judge ruled that a last- minute mercy petition filed by Pawan Gupta - the last of the four to file the plea - is still pending with Rashtra- pati Bhavan. “I am of the opinion that the death sentence cannot be exe- cuted pending the disposal of the mercy petition of the con- vict. It is hereby directed that the execution of death warrants against all the convicts sched- uled for 03.03.2020 at 6 am if de- ferred till further orders,” the judge said in his order. Reacting to stay on the executions for the third time, the victim’s mother blamed the “failure of the system and the government.” “This is the failure of the system and the gov- ernment which has led to the delay of the execu- tion. Till the time the con- victs are not hanged, Iwill not be relieved.”she said. Earlier on Monday, the judge had rejected Pawan’s request to stop the executions yet again but reserved the order because the convict had petitioned the President to commute his death sentence to life imprisonment. Pawan Gupta’s lawyer AP Singh had filed the mercy plea shortly after the Supreme Court dismissed the con- vict’s curative petition Mon- day morning. A curative petition is the last judicial resort available to a convict for redressal against the fi- nal judgment. The Supreme Court had dismissed curative petitions filed by two other convicts, Mukesh Singh and Vinay Sharma on January 14. The curative petition filed by the third convict, Akshay Thakur was dismissed on January 30. Earlier on Monday, Justice Rana also underlined during the hearing that Pawan Gup- ta had missed the seven-day deadline that the Delhi High Court had set last month for the convicts to avail their le- gal remedies. The court had first issued the death warrant against the four convicts on January 7, 2020 and scheduled their execution on January 22. The execution date was post- poned twice, first to Febru- ary 1 and then to March 3. In December 2012, five men and a juvenile had raped and brutalised a young para-medic student in a moving bus in Delhi before throwing her and a male friend out of the vehicle. The victim later died of injuries a fortnight later in a Singapore hospital. One of the accused committed suicide in Tihar jail during the trial. Turn on P5 This shows the failure of our system. The couple have a 4-year-old daughter and have been married since 2012. Ini- tially, after discovering her husband’s infidelity, she left him and moved out of their house. Lat- er, she received written assurance from her hus- band that he would change his ways. How- ever, she allegedly later found out that he was still involved in extra- marital affairs. As many as 258 complaints have been received from Va- dodara district. There are many other dis- tricts which have re- ceived on an average 100 complaints during this time. It may be recalled that Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot from the Congress par- ty has often scoffed at the Gujarat Govern- ment’s claims that the State practises prohibi- tion strictly. Meanwhile, the po- lice in their further in- vestigations, nabbed the boottlegger who sup- plied the liquor in the party. He was associated by his friend Suketu. The police are looking for another bootlegger from Magda- lla area who supplied another consignment to the party. However, some of the parents thanked the po- lice. One of them said, “Police saved my daugh- ter. I was unaware about the party. Every one was inebriated in the party. Sara Abdullah Pilot had challenged her brother’s detention un- der the Jammu & Kash- mir Public Safety Act (PSA) last month after the 49-year-old former chief minister was booked on February 5 under PSA. Omar Abdullah was detained in August 2019 when the Centre nullified Article 370 and placed Kashmir valley in a state of lock- down. His detention in 2019 was under Section 107 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which empowers an ex- ecutive magistrate to order a person to exe- cute bonds “for keep- ing the peace”. Right before his de- tention was to expire in February 2020, the ad- ministration issued a fresh order under the PSA that allows au- thorities to detain a person without trial for a maximum period of two years. In her Habeas Cor- pus [literally means, produce the body] peti- tion, Sara prayed for orders to produce Ab- dullah in the Supreme Court. She argued that he is a votary of peace and there is over- whelming evidence to prove the same. Hang in... FROM PG 1 8 KILLED, 20 HURT IN ROAD MISHAPAccording to police sources, the death toll may go up to 10, police has filed an FIR against tanker driver First India News Surat: At least eight people were killed and over 20 others injured in a major accident involv- ing three vehicles, in- cluding a State Trans- port bus, on the national highway in Tapi district in South Gujarat on Monday. Police sources claimed the death toll is likely to increase to over 10. The tragic accident occurred when a State Transport bus collided with a speeding tanker and another four-wheel- er on the national high- way near Pokhran vil- lage under Songadh po- lice station in Tapi dis- trict. The bus was heading towards Tapi through National Highway 53 when a tanker driver lost control over his ve- hicle and hit the bus. Just then, a four-wheel- er coming behind the bus rammed into it. Around 25 injured people were rushed to the nearest hospital with the help of 108 emergency sevices. Lo- cals rushed to the spot and managed to rescue the injured from the bus coming from Surat. Police Inspector of SongadhCKChaudhary said the State Transport buswascomingtowards Ukai in Tapi district from Surat district. “It collided with the tanker head on while another vehicle, a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV),” he said. The inspector did not rule out the possibility of rise in the death toll. According to reports from the Gujarat State Road Transport Corpo- ration (GSRTC), the bus was on the route from Kushalgadh to Ukai when the accident oc- cured near Doshwada Village. In the accident the bus was hit by tank- er and from a cruiser from rear side. The eight people who were killed on the spot included, the driver of the bus as well as of the tanker and four travel- lers in the SUV. The po- lice have lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against the tanker driver after a complaint by the bus conductor. 23,000 attend mega building material expo AAP LIKELY TO CONTEST MUNICIPAL ELECTIONSMasuma Bharmal Jariwala Rajkot: After winning Delhi, the Aam Aadmi Party is looking at con- testing local body elec- tions in Gujarat to- wards the year-end. Kishore Desai, a founder member of AAP heading the party in Gujarat, told First India, “ In the past 25 years, BJP and Con- gress have played a friendly game fooling people. Corruption grew because of them. This was understood by AAP and people of Delhi. We will prove this in Gujarat by con- testing all the local elections, including Nagar palika, taluka panchayat, district panchayat and munici- pal corporation.” Two big faces of Ra- jkot, Rajendra Jhala, who had an active po- litical career with the BJP for 17 years and was also standing com- mittee chairman at Ra- jkot Municipal Corpo- ration, while former President of Rajkot Chamber of Com- merce Shivlal Barasia, already an AAP mem- ber, is likely to get some core responsibili- ties. They know their lives hang by a thread yet, taking advantage of legal loopholes, the quartet of Pawan Gupta, Akshay Kumar Singh, Mukesh Kumar, and Vinay Kumar Shar- ma have been able to once again evade the noose that awaits them in Tihar jail. Their scheduled hanging at 6 a.m. tomorrow has been deferred because, as the judge said, they have not exhausted all their legal op- tions. Pawan Gupta’s mercy petition is pend- ing with President Ram Nath Kovind. “The condemned convict must not meet his creator with a grievance in his bosom that the courts of this country have not acted fairly in granting him an opportu- nity to exhaust his legal remedies,” the Patiala House court in Delhi said. The hanging had earlier been deferred on January 22 and February 1. Pawan Gupta (25) and others, who have been filing petitions separately to buy time and delay the inevitable, waited for the Su- preme Court to decide on his curative peti- tion. After the Apex Court dismissed the peti- tion on Monday morning, Gupta filed his mercy petition and moved Patiala House court praying for deferment of his execution. An upset prosecution lawyer Seema Kushwaha said, “Can’t the court under- stand the manipulation of law? Our sys- tem is completely rotten. It takes years to get justice. We have to fix it together.” The Central govt moved the SC last month seeking change in laws which, it said, were skewed in criminals’ favour. The delaying tactic has been used despite the Delhi HC giv- ing them a week’s time last month to exhaust all their legal remedies. Nirbhaya’s mother Asha Devi, who has been relentless in her pursuit of justice for her daughter, was distressed by the develop- ment and called it “delaying tactics” as she asked the court about her rights as the vic- tim’s mother. On Monday, the distraught mother said, “She was savagely raped and thrown on the streets. Her intestines were ripped out. And all these courts are sitting and watching tamasha.” On December 16, 2012, a paramedical stu- dent was assaulted and tortured brutally by these men. She died a few days later. Media named her Nirbhaya. Their partners in the gruesome crime were an 18-year-old and the main accused Ram Singh. The teen- ager was released after three years in a reform home, while Ram Singh commit- ted suicide in Tihar. A law was specially formulated after the hei- nous crime. The Criminal Law (Amendment) Act 2013 (Nirbhaya Act) was legislation passed byparliamenttoensurejusticetothevictimsof sexual assault, harassment, stalking, etc. That does not seem to be happening, as the convicts have been able to dodge the noose a third time. IN-DEPTH A Goods and services across the world are suffering the aftermath of the quick spread of the Covid-19 virus. Global exports and imports and Chinese exports and imports are so intertwined that it is unavoidable y the 20th anni- versary of Har- ryPotterin2017, over 400 million Harry Potter books had been sold world- wide and translated into 68 languages. In spite of J. K. Rowling’s rejection by a dozen publishers before her success with Blooms- bury, Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone became one of the best selling book s of all time. The film franchise of the books grossed US$8.5 bil- lion (almost A$13 billion), book sales totalled US$7.7 billion (A$11.7 billion), US$7.3 billion (A$11 bil- lion) has been made from toys and merchandise, and US$2 billion (A$3 billion) from DVD sales. The Harry Potter “empire” has an es- timated total worth of US$25billion(A$38billion). With bars, theme parks, fan conventions, mugs, costumes and knitting patterns going gangbusters, it seemed the little wizard could do no wrong. Words like “muggle”, “quidditch” and “Hogwarts” have be- come part of our vocabu- lary. But more than a dec- ade since the last Harry Potter book was published, it appears the lucrative spell is wearing off. PAGE TO SCREEN TO STAGE Since the end of the belov- ed series (the last book in 2007 and film in 2011), there have been two spin-off sto- ries: the film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and the play Harry Potter and The Cursed Child, both released in 2016. The film’s sequel Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald was released in 2018. The first Fantastic Beasts film performed reasonably well at the box office, grossing US$814 million world- wide (A$1.2 billion), which is within the earn- ings range of the first eight Harry Potter films. However, the Fantastic Beasts sequel resulted in less box office revenue than the first, at US$654 million (A$1 billion) glob- ally, the lowest grossing of all the “Harry-verse” films. Subsequent questions have been raised about how the third planned film will perform, let alone the rest of the five-film series that had previously been mooted. The Harry Potter and the Cursed Child play is broadly considered a West End and Broadway success and has toured internationally. Despite the huge amount of money invested and the creative approach taken in promot- ing the production, ticket sales have seen a consider- able drop in the past year (50% since their peak). A TURNING POINT In and of itself the play was always going to be a challenge: it is a two-part production which means theatre goers have to buy two tickets and attend twice. The producers say it is intended to be seen “in order on the same day (matinee and even- ing) or on two consecu- tive evenings”. This makes cost a prob- lematic factor. It’s also a big timecommitment.Theplay has a rather daunting run- ning time of around two hours and 40 minutes each time, making a total dura- tion of just over five hours. That’s likely to be too much for many young fans. And about those “young fans”. When the Harry Pot- ter and the Chamber of Secrets movie debuted in 2002, 60% of the audience was under the age of 15. This cohort are now in their 30s and this age group is considered as “non-thea- tre goers”. In the UK the average theatre audience member is 52. The average age of the Broadway the- atregoer is 42 years old. Australian audiences at musicals and operas were last estimated to be pre- dominantly between 55 and 74 years of age in 2014. ECONOMY IN THE TIME OF AN EPIDEMIC CHINA ACCOUNTS FOR AROUND 18 PERCENT OF THE GLOBAL GDP (2019) COMPARED TO 4 PERCENT WHEN THE SARS EPIDEMIC HAD BROKEN OUT IN 2003 hen the world’s second-largest economy gets hit, the tremors are bound to be felt by both large economies such as the US and developing ones like our own. The coronavirus epidemic, with its epicenter in Wuhan, the capital of the busy province of Hubei in China, has claimed more than 3,000 lives and infect- ed over 88,000. It has spread to over 60 countries and sent shockwaves through finan- cial markets. Beyond its path- ological implications, lies its impact on the global economy. IMPACT ON INDIA The trade between China and India is worth $87 billion, of which we import goods worth $70 billion from China. It in- cludes everything from electric componentsandmachines,med- ical instruments and pharma raw materials, vehicles and auto parts, ironandsteelcomponents to nuclear machinery. While China takes 5.1 per- centof ourtotalexports, inthe form of cotton, salt and organ- ic chemicals, and mineral and metal ores among others, we get 13.7 percent of our total imports from China alone. Needless to say then, when our second-largest trading part- ner hits the brakes on its facto- ry output, companies in India break into a sweat. Wemayhavepushedforsmart- phonemanufacturerstoincrease their domestic production, but they still depend on China for theircomponents.Otherelectron- ic goods manufacturers would also be facing production issues. A supply shortfall in consum- er electrical and electronic goods in India (either due to coronavirus-led Chinese cuts or our economic slowdown) would also trouble online sales, as they form a sizable portion of e-commerce goods sales. Pharma companies bring in key raw ingredients from China to make medicines. Automobile manufacturers, too, are heavily dependent for their components on their Chinese suppliers. However, the Chinese New Year in January-February would have proved to be a great- er boon than usual as compa- nies would have stocked up by December last year, anticipat- ing the Chinese holiday season. The extra stock will act as a cushion for some weeks till March, as will India’s weak con- sumer demand. But if the Cov- id-19 virus continues its ram- page, the second quarter could see more manufacturing dis- ruption in this slowdown. GOODS AND SERVICES Goods and services across the world are suffering the after- math of the quick spread of the Covid-19 virus. Global exports and imports and Chinese ex- ports and imports are so inter- twined that it is unavoidable. The spillover of disruption has been the most acute in Chi- na’s neighbours as seen in their monetary policy responses. GOODS MOVEMENT Shipping has been heavily af- fected with curbs on movement to stem the spread of the Cov- id-19 virus. Shipping companies have cut back on their ships sailing from China to the rest of the world, carrying goods, to prevent the virus from advancing to other areas. It has a direct bearing on the world’s supply chain as 80 percent of global goods trade by volume is trans- ported in ships and China itself houses seven of the world’s 10 busiest container sea-ports, says the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. The contagious coronavirus is a threat to business infrastruc- ture in adjoining countries as well, as Singapore and South Korea, too, have busy ports and have seen the disease escalate. The far-reaching supply con- straints have affected the US economy as well, besides its dar- ling stocks like Apple, with its manufacturing and services ac- tivities at their lowest levels this February in over six years on fearsof thecoronavirusoutbreak slowing global demand, accord- ing to a monthly private survey. Businesses are worried about tepid demand as well as managing the limited sup- ply for existing demand, with news of how even e-com- merce giant, Amazon, taking precautions as Chinese sellers cut back on their visibility and promotions to limit orders. Global GDP The global GDP will be compro- mised due to the economic fall- out of the coronavirus. China accounts for around 18 percent of the global GDP (2019) com- pared to 4 percent when the Sars epidemic had broken out in 2003. Chinese businesses are now more ingrained in global supply chains. Sars had robbed China of 1 percent of its economic growth in the eight months it had last- ed. The coronavirus is expected to shave off 1-2 percentage points off China’s GDP growth in the first quarter of 2020. INVESTOR TAKEAWAY IN TIMES OF EPIDEMICS Contagious epidemics bring un- certainty to the investing com- munity worldwide, prompting them to move towards tradition- alassetssuchasgoldsandbonds that are perceived to be more stable, instead of the assets with systemic risk like equities. That is where smart invest- ment planning involving diver- sification and asset allocation comes in. It allows us to stay out of troubled waters and focus on our health, instead. BRIEF in Dubai: Ankita Raina’s red-hot form and Sania Mirza’s assuring pres- ence will give India a much better shot at the Play-offs place when the six-team Fed Cup com- petition begins here from Tuesday. Ankita has been in tremendous form since the start of the season, winning two ITF sin- gles and as many dou- bles titles. She is placed at a ca- reer-best 160 in the sin- gles ranking chart but during the Fed Cup the gritty Ankita has al- ways punched above her weight, giving tough times to formida- ble opponents. She would be captain Vishal Uppal’s biggest weapon apart from mul- tiple-time doubles Grand Slam champion Sania Mirza, who is re- turning to Fed Cup af- ter four years. The three-week delay in the start of the tour- nament due to Corona- virus outbreak has giv- en Sania a chance to recover from her calf injury which had forced her to retire mid-way from her Australian Open women’s doubles opener. Her experience of playing and winning at the big stage will help younger players in the side in handling the pressure situations better. “I had a good start to the season, so I am con- fident going into the competition. And defi- nitely Sania will inspire all of us to give our best. Her advise and tips will be more than helpful,” admitted Ankita. Riya Bhatia has risen in the ranks and her new-found confidence will be good for India’s chances. After bundling out India for mere 124 runs in the morning ses- sion on Day Three, New Zealand chased down the target riding on half centuries from its openers Tom Latham and Tom Blundell Starting the post-lunch session at 46/0, Latham and Blundell didn’t allow the Indian bowlers to make any in- roads and collected runs at will. They both shared 103-run opening stand be- fore Latham (52) became the victim of Umesh Yadav, who had him caught by wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. Skipper Kane Williamson (5), also couldn’’t contribute much with the bat, just like the first innings, and was undone by a brilliant delivery from Jasprit Bumrah. Blundell, too, didn’t stay long after his skipper’s depar- ture and was bowled by Bumrah af- ter scoring 55. However, Ross Taylor (5*) and Henry Nicholls (5*) completed the formalities as the Black Caps won the match in 36th over of their second innings. Earlier, starting the day at 90/6, the Indian lower order, unlike that of the Black Caps, failed to show any resist- ance. The last four batsmen could add just 34 runs as they got bowled out for 124, setting up a 132-run target for the Kiwis. I feel like we were com- pletely outplayed in this series,” the Indian captain was honest and forthright in his assessment following the seven-wicket loss in the second Test here. “We obviously didn’t play the kind of cricket we do as a team.
