6. There are currently three levels of apprenticeships available depending
on your current skills and qualifications: Intermediate Level
Apprenticeship (level 2), Advanced Level Apprenticeship (level 3),
Higher Apprenticeship (level 4 or above).
7. Who can apply for an apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships are open to anyone who is 16 years old or over is not
in full time education and is eligible to work in the UK.
12. You would be entitled to at least 20 days paid holiday as well as
bank holidays.
13. In the long run, those with Advanced Apprenticeships are up to
£100,000 better off than those following other routes.
14. You can learn at a pace best suited to you with the help of your
mentor/employer.
15. Qualifications:
National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) at Level 2, 3, 4 or 5.
Functional Skills qualifications, e.g. in Maths, English or ICT a technical
certificate, such as a BTEC or City & Guilds Progression Award.
17. Do I have to pay anything?
The National Apprenticeship service pays all the costs of training
apprentices between the ages of 16 and 18.
18. The National Apprenticeship service pays half the cost of training apprentices
who are 19 to 24 years old, with the employer paying the remaining costs.
19. How much will I earn?
As an apprentice, you would be paid for the hours you work, which would
be a minimum of 30 hours per week and training, which is usually 1 day
per week.
20. Those aged 16 – 18 years of age are paid the minimum wage rate for an
apprentice, which is currently £2.68 per hour but many employers pay more.
The average weekly wage, according to the National Apprenticeship Service,
is around £170 a week (£4.50 per hour).
21. If you are 19 years old or over, you would be paid the minimum wage for an
apprentice for the first year. From the second year you would be paid the
minimum wage rate for your age.
22. After you complete your apprenticeship you can go on to higher
education at a college or university.
