3. What is an Apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes for people aged
sixteen and over. They combine practical ‘on the job’ training with
classroom study. Learners are able to develop their skills for their chosen
career field through apprenticeships, as well as gain nationally recognised
qualifications.
4. Apprenticeship Levels
There are three levels of apprenticeships, available for those aged 16 and
over.
1. INTERMEDIATE APPRENTICESHIPS: Equivalent to five good GCSE
passes.
2. ADVANCED APPRENTICESHIPS: Equivalent to two A-Level passes.
3. HIGHER APPRENTICESHIPS: In some cases, equivalent to a
foundation degree, a HND, or an undergraduate degree.

The current minimum wage rate for an apprentice is £3.40 per hour.
This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who
