Why do you need to use aprotic solvents (THF, diethyl ether) in a Grignard Reaction? Solution RMgX is general representation of grignard reagent it exist as R- and MgX+ R- is very strong base. if we use any protic solvents like H2O and ROH R- abstracts proton from solvent becomes neutral R- + H2O -------------> RH so there will be reaction between grignard reagent and protoc solvent. so we must use aprotic solvent to avoid above mentioned problem..
