The Aurora Cambridge innovation initiative creates a space within British Antarctic Survey where new ideas, out-of-the-box thinking and new connections can lead to cross-science breakthroughs and new partnerships. Co-funded by NERC and University of Cambridge, Aurora Cambridge aims to generate new academic, business and policy partnerships that focus on excellent research and entrepreneurial activity in the areas of climate change, environmental stewardship and technologies for challenging environments.

2. where innovation is cool
.. under some of the most extreme and
hostile conditions on earth.
This requires an innovative spirit in all
areas of work!
Our scientific, engineering and
operations staff constantly invent
ingenious solutions to help us
unlock the past
understand the present
predict the future.
Pushing the boundaries of knowledge..
3. where innovation is cool
We strive to make our expertise available wherever
it can be applied – not only in the polar regions:
• Other cold places: Andes / Himalayas
• Other remote/inhospitable places: deserts, open
oceans, space research
• Transferable technologies: remote sensing, low
power applications
• Issues of global relevance: climate change, space
weather, biorenewable resources
..beyond the polar regions
4. where innovation is cool
• We seek to make our technologies and expertise visible and
accessible to a wide spectrum of stakeholders, and find novel
applications.
• We seek partnerships with (interdisciplinary) collaborators from
academia, industry, policy and the 3rd sector - to expand benefit &
reach of our expertise.
• We aim to learn from others about how
to improve our work.
• A valuable tool for this is our
Innovation Centre “Aurora Cambridge”.
Innovation through partnership
5. where innovation is cool
Innovation for Planet Earth
• An enabler for BAS to address issues of
global importance through partnership
• An opportunity for researchers,
government, industry and society to
• engage in BAS work
• form new links
• develop new collaborations
• generate wider benefit
