2. Type
• Type of Documentary ‘The Music Biz’ documentary about
marketing the music artist Meatloaf was a mixed
documentary. This was because the documentary included
a range of evidence for the exposition, for example:
Interviews Observations Archive Footage
Narration
3. Narrative Structure
• The Narrative is single
stranded because it only focus
on one story through which is
the artist meat loaf.
• The documentary is non linear
as the events occur in order
that the narrator makes them
relevant and they are not
necessarily chronological the
documentary is also closed as
the audience are not left with
any unanswered questions.
4. Camera
• Camera work - Their are various other
shots included within this documentary a
particularly creative one is the point of
view shot when we as the audience enter
the betting shop. Also their is
tilted/canted angles and tracking shots
following the fans, this could really
exaggerate the amount of people their
and emphasize how big the fan base
actually is.
• Within Interviews, the interviewee are
within a medium close up but only face
the side of the interviewee, this goes
against the usual codes and conventions
of documentaries.
5. Mise En Scene
• Within the documentary many different
locations are shot within and the mise
en scene accentuates how hard they
worked and where meat loaf took them
in order to sell him filming on location
at betting shops and on set for his
music video and also the footage at
the press conference of the award
shows. As well as virgin records chief
executive having the virgin records all
over the green screen.
6. Sound
• Their is a sarcastic undertone to the
voice over which narrates throughout
the length of the documentary, as
well as sarcasm which adds humour
and highlights hypocrisy within some
things meat loaf says. This makes
the documentary more fun, light and
still educational.
• “Moving on up” is played when they
discuss meat loaf rising in the charts
• Non-diegetic sound of meat loaf’s
single is played a lot of times too.
7. Editing
• Images and image reels of meat loaf
are played behind the interviewer in
most interviews this shows that
Green screens are used.
• Simple cuts throughout stick to the
usual conventions.
• Fades and dissolves on some
images which makes it look quite
unprofessional in my opinion.
• During a performance at the award
show slow motion is used this could
be to add tension.
8. Archive Material
• Their are various images used within the
documentary that are archive material
such as magazine and newspaper
covers and articles and when Mr. blobby
wins Christmas number one
• The achieve material of the magazine
and newspaper headlines anchors the
idea of meat loaf being heavily
discussed
• Speeches are also archive material
• Meeting with fans
• Meat loaf on stage
9. Graphics
• The graphics are white and red
they are quite bold and could be
seen as distracting
• Again this documentary follows
the conventions as when a new
interviewee comes on to speak
they are anchored by a
subheading letting us know who
they are and the relevance to
the theme this was usually to the
right or left of the frame and
never central
