What is news r1
1.
2. • News is something that is new or current and it is something that is
meaningful or interesting for the public.
• News is things that people want to or need to know about.
• For example some people may want to know about the latest news
on politics or sports.
Examples of popular News institutions:
• BBC news (British)
• ITV news (British)
• FOX news (American)
3. • News is divided into two categories, the first being hard news. This refers
to news on the surface and events that have been immediately reported.
While, soft news refers to background information or human-interest
stories.
• Examples of hard news would be war and politics and examples of soft
news would be entertainment and sports. But, recently it has been difficult
to find the division between the two as the question is news about the
private life of a politician, “politics” or “entertainment”? Could be asked.
Thus, it is rather difficult to decide on whether news is hard or soft when it
is judged solely its subject.
• However, hard news or soft news can be differentiated through the tone of
presentation of each. For example, a hard news story will sound very
factual with questions like “who was involved” “where and when did it
happen” being answered in the broadcast. While a soft news story will
attempt to entertain or advise the audience, for example news on dieting
or healthy eating.
4. • News also be categorized and differentiated through its location.
• There are 3 locational categories:
• Local news: refers to news that is within a town or a city
• National news: refers to news across a country
• International news: refers to news from around the world.
Examples of Local news would be news on GCSE results of a school in
London orTower Hamlets, examples of National news would be the
introduction of a news Law or Bill and examples of International news
would news on the Syrian refugee crisis.
5. From this particular research that I have conducted, I have learnt the
different categories that News Stories mat conventionally fall in and
that is what determines the audience who may view the broadcast.
Thus, when I make my Radio News Broadcast, I must make sure that
the News story that me and my group will be presenting falls in
certain categories, so that the news story appeals to young adults.
