2. What is resin?:
It is such a polymer that is not yet been formed into its final shape.
alkyd resin:
The name is combination of acid and alcohol.
The introduction of vegetable oil into the polyester makes alkyd resins.
Raw materials are pthalic anhydride, pentaerythritol and soya bean or linseed oil.
Catalyst may be used to speed up the reaction like some hydroxide or the organic salt of alkali metal.
This is the sense ascribed to polyesters.
These are thermoplastic polyesters infect.
It uses bulk polymerization for its processing.
Monomers:
Monomers used are the following : polyols, polybasic acid and triglycerol oil.
Types:
1. Silicone alkyd 2. urethane alkyd
3. Phenolic alkyd 4. polyamide alkyd
Grades:
• Glyptal
• Spolchemie
• Cosmic alkyd
• CHS alkyd
3. Manufacturers :
1. glyptal 2. cytes
3. RPI 4. kemwerke
5. margara resins
6. capital resins
Manufacturing process:
It is formed by the condensation
polymerization
Its production completes in basically 2 steps.
Pentaerythritol and vegetable oil are first
heated in the presence of a catalyst for 2
hours.
Vegetable oil is an ester of glycererol and
unsaturated fatty acid.
This reaction is basically a trans esterification
Fatty acid forms an ester with polyhydroxy
alcohol.
4. Properties:
Good weathering properties
Economical
In expensive
Excellent pigment wetting properties
Very good ultraviolet resistance
Heat resistant
Its properties makes it useful in its applications
Applications:
Used in synthetic paints, varnishes and
in enamels.
Used in manufacturing of thermosetting
plastic.
Furniture and architectural coating.
Used as product finisher.
Special purpose coating
Automobile finishing primer.
Used in highway traffic paint and in
swimming pool paints.
Specially used in solvent based paints.
5. Researches:
1.Alkyd resins based on hyper branched
polyesters and PET waste for coating
applications (progress in organic coating)
Highlights :
o The alkyd resins based on the glycolyzed PET and
hyper branched polyesters with different vegetables
oils or fatty acids were synthesized.
o Their molecular structures were identified using IR
and NMR spectroscopy.
o All the films produced showed good adhesion,
bending, impact and ductility.
o Gloss and hardness increased with enhancing the
degree of branching.
o The recycling and further processing improves as
this PET is used in production of the alkyd resins.
o The foremost purpose to do so is to used as an
industrail coater.

6. 2. Mineralization of alkyd resin’s waste water
Highlights:
1. Various advanced (AOPS) are compared for their feasibility for mineralization of waste water of alkyd
resins.
2. Waste water of alkyd contains many organic compounds.
3. This waste water is not beneficial for plants, for household or for industrial use.
4. The treatment of this waste material can overcome the scarcity of the fresh water.
5. This treated water can be used in industries for different purposes.

Conclusion:
In the end one can say that the
alkyd resins are the materials that
find its wide applications in coating
, paint, enamels, furniture and in
special purpose coating, recent
researches shows that its
importance can not be denied now.
It shows compatibility, good
properties and above all it is
cheap.
