The Hunger Games follows a 16-year-old girl called Katniss Everdeen from
District 12, who volunteers for the 74th Hunger Games in place of her younger
sister Primrose Everdeen. The Hunger Games picks two people from each district
one female and one male so along with Katniss Peeta Mellark also participates
from District 12, a boy who has developed a secret crush on Katniss. They are
mentored by District 12's only living victor, Haymitch Abernathy, who won the
Games 24 years earlier and has since assumed a solitary life of alcoholism. Peeta
confesses his love for Katniss in a television interview prior to the Games, leading
the Capitol to portray Katniss and Peeta as "star-crossed lovers." This revelation
surprises Katniss, who has feelings for Gale Hawthorne, her friend and hunting
partner from district 12. Haymitch advises Katniss to play along and pretend to
have feelings for Peeta, in order to gain wealthy sponsors who can gift them
supplies during the Games. In the arena, Katniss develops an alliance with Rue, a
young tribute from District 11, and is emotionally scarred when Rue is killed as
she reminds Katniss of her sister. More than halfway through the Games, the
remaining tributes are alerted to a rule change that allows both tributes from the
same district to be declared victors if they are the final two standing. After learning
of the change, Katniss and Peeta begin to work as a team. When all of the other
tributes are dead and they appear to win the Games together, the rule change is
withdrawn. Katniss leads Peeta in a double suicide attempt to eat poisonous berries
known as night lock, hoping that the change will be reinstated and that they will
win the Games. Their scheme is successful, and both tributes return home
victorious. During and after the Games, Katniss develops genuine feelings for
Peeta and struggles to balance them with the connection she feels with Gale. When
it becomes clear that the Capitol is upset with her defiance, Haymitch encourages
Katniss to maintain the "star-crossed lovers" act, without telling Peeta.
How have communist and socialist movements interpreted Marxist? What is
the different between communism and socialism?
Karl Marx is a philosopher who came up with the theory that equality is the only
answer and that the only way to gain happiness is for the rich and poor to be
equal. Communism applies Marxism by forcing equality through dictatorship
normally through violence. However socialism approaches equality in a different
way by not applying violence and having a community base which pushes for
equality and tries to bridge the gap between the rich and poor.
How does Marxist critique relate to post-modernism?
Modernism has made our society reach its peak of what we can achieve.
Postmodernism is a critique of our society as it suggests that we have a
disconnected culture. It’s the idea that the effect of modernism has made society
have a very rich and a very poor however it’s the concept of the American dream
2. that made some people fail to be rich. Marxist relates to postmodernism as it is
also a critique of modernism and evolution of what went wrong with modernism.
Both of the theory tries to seek out what a perfect world could be.
What Marxist and postmodernism critiques can be applied to the film clip
you’ve chosen?
Marxist and postmodernism critiques can be applied to the clip of the hunger
games as it’s through a feminist view as the lead actor is a women and a number
time unlike most movies passes the Bechtel test. Simulation is also a concept that
is seen throughout the clip as It focuses on a blurred boundary as it’s the idea of a
death game which mixes both realty and fiction together. In this clip the
Symbolism of shooting the apple in the pig’s mouth is a representation of the rich
and their society being destroyed as the pig with the apple in its mouth represents
the rich and their lifestyle and by Katniss putting an arrow through the apple
symbolises the poor punishing the rich for the way they treat them.
