3. Risk assessment and decision support system for tunnelling and
underground construction works
Concept and main objective: Development of an intelligent decision support tool to
identify, control and manage the risks associated to tunnelling and underground
construction works.
This software tool would be used by engineers, technicians as well as decision makers
involved in the construction process to evaluate and assess the different impacts of the
project during all the project’s stages including its study, deployment and implementation.
The use of the tool in the decision making process will result in cost and time savings, too.
Innovative aspects of the project:
• Improvement of the tenders through a better assessment of the different alternatives,
obtaining a more competitive bid in economical and technical terms in tender processes
while minimizing risks.
• Construction works simulations, evaluating and anticipating the different possible
scenarios
• Reducing the margin for human errors in specific situations which require quick
decisions
