Critical Analysis on The Scream by Edvard Munch Essay
Critical Analysis on The Scream by Edvard Munch
Edvard Munch was born on December 12 1863 in Loten Norway. He moved to Christiana, and spent
most of his childhood there. Both his mother and his oldest sister suffered from tuberculosis and
died before he reached the age of 14. At 18 he became more serious about his art and started
attending art school. Edvard finally found a release for the pain he felt from his sister's death. In
1886 he painted "The Sick Child". The painting was so emotionally charged that it received a lot of
criticism from the press and the public. However some of his artist colleagues began to recognize
his talent. The same year another tragedy struck. His father died in ... Show more content on

Expressionism is not an art that is based on reality of something but more on the emotion of the
thing. E.g. there is a painting of a man sitting on a chair. But in Expressionist painting the colours,
emotion and shapes would show the mans emotions to show a completely different picture and
story. This is why Expressionist art is so unique and distinctive as it can tell a whole different story,
and show so may different deep emotions and feelings in one painting. Expressionism is one of the
most popular types of art in the later 19th and the 20th centuries. It shows an individual, impulsive,
self–expressionate piece of art.
Edvard Munch used a range of expressive colours like Reds, dark blues, and oranges. The sky is
filled with fiery reds and oranges. This could represent the anger, frustration in the artist life. The
ocean is filled with cold blues and greens. This could symbolise depression despair and misery in
Edvard Munch's life. There is also a whirlpool in the middle of the ocean. Where there looks like
there are a few boats are getting pulled in. I think this represents that Edvard Munch is stuck in the
middle of emotions, fury and anger or depression and misery of the loss of his family. They are both
trying to suck him in and he is trying to escape. There are 2 other boats in the picture. I thought that
these might symbolise other

My Worst New Years In My Life
Worst New Years in My Life
The carpeted floor was covered with dust, while I washing my hands. As I walk outside I could see
world renowned Sydney's, New Year's fireworks shoot across the sky. The vibrant colors and the
designs were beautiful. I could hear the sharp sounds of people across Sydney, Australia celebrating
New Years. I could hear the laughter all throughout the house. I can hear the beautiful music ringing
in my ears. Everyone was enjoying the beautiful party. The carpeted floor gave me a weird feeling.
There were dust particles scattered throughout the floor.
Suddenly, my nose starts to itch, my ears hear a ringing sound like no other. I walked down the hall
of my aunt's friends house seeing if it really actually hurt. "Oh. It must be nothing." I thought. I
walked up and down watching the tulips, roses, and orchids everywhere. "Saahil. You are
crying."My sister said. "What?" It must be just something in my eye." I called. My eyes start to hurt
my eyes start burn. I go to the bathroom and put water in my eye. I look in the mirror and I see
myself with two almost completely red eyes. I try to open my eyes and do not see anything. I try to
let out a scream, but cannot. The stinging was jack–knifing me in my brain. The tears roll down my
cheek. I blindly walk toward my mom. I try to open my eyes and it automatically closes.
"It hurts Mom! It hurts!" I cried. I feel a sudden urge to lie down.
"Saahil, what is wrong? What happened?" My mom worried. I tell her

States Of Feelings Through Collaboration Or Series
States of Feelings through Collaboration or Series
Everyone has feeling whether they show them or not, and they have a great impact on how, what
and why we create art. However, how much of our emotions are shown through our facial
expressions? How well can another read those expressions versus how well can we read that same
person's of state of emotion through their art. None the less anger may result in strong gestural
painting. Addition to anger any strong emotion can come through in whatever we create.
History shows us that great works can come from a highly agitated state of emotion. This goes along
with what Edvard Munch said about The Scream (1893), "For several years I was almost mad... You

What is the juxtaposition between the feeling in the photograph and the title.
If we observe the color pallets used in the examples we can see that they inspire melancholy in the
audience. Color can be pivotal when expressing your state of feelings.
How much do our deeper emotions drive our creations and do we ever hold back for fear of
repercussions from our audience? Are you willing to put raw emotion out there for others to judge?
How would you feel about sharing that with someone else? Collaborating on a piece that is deeply
involved with your feelings. Would you feel safe to express your state of feeling through a work
with another. Art evokes strong feelings in those that perceive it. When we look at art our state of
feeling changes depending on what you see.
Feelings are a fluid experience, constantly changing throughout the day. What would happen if you
recorded your state of feeling over a period of time? The picture to the left is of the National
Geographic's Girl with the Green Eyes. The photograph was taken years apart yet it still elicits a
strong emotional response from the viewer.

Why I Love Horror Movies Essay
3/22/2012 English 100 The Best of Horror movies
Many people would say that their favorite way to have fun is to go to a beautiful beach and build
sand castles or hang out with their friends at the mall. But for me, put me in a dark theater with a
murderous psychopath on the loose threatening teenagers and I am happy. I am a lover of horror
movies. This is something that I don't always tell people, because it seems kind of weird to enjoy
being scared and grossed out by lots of blood and gore. But in fact, I love horror movies, and I am
not alone. And I am not crazy. Horror movies can be not only fun, but some experts have even
argued that they are harmless or even good for us.
There are many people who say that horror ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Out of all of them I was the only one who was not afraid. I did not scream, nor did I ever cover my
eyes like they did. At one point Barbara tried to leave in the middle of the movie because it was too
"scary" I quickly put my leg up in front of her and told her "relax its not even that scary we didn't
pay ten dollars just to see half of the movie and leave". She stayed but it would have been a good
idea if I had let her go. Why? Because she constantly kept screaming every 10 seconds a "scary"
part came up in the movie. Farah on the other hand was trying to keep it "cool and tough" just like I
was, she didn't scream much but the expression on her face was priceless, you can tell she was
scared. But I kept laughing at them and saying "it's not even that serious" so they probably thought I
was really "tough". So this is what Stephen King means when he says we try to prove how strong
we are or how cool we can play it knowing that the movie is really scary.
Most interestingly, he says "By the time one turns 40 or 50, one's appetite for double twists or 360
degree loops may be considerably depleted" (King) Once we start to get older our love for horror
movies start to disappear and we become little kids again that are afraid to watch scary movies. So
King is also basically saying that mostly the younger generation prefers to watch horror movies.
"That may explain why horror movies are most popular with younger audiences. Teens and twenty–
somethings "are more likely to

Horror And Film : Hitchcock 's Masterpiece Psycho Essay
Genres are broad titles that most often than not have many sub genres that work under them. Horror
is an example of this. Under the horror category you have many sub genres like vampire films,
gothic horrors and slashers. The Slasher film has become a defining subgenre of the horror film.
While the origins of the slasher come from their predecessor the Italian giallo films they have had a
massive American influence in recent times. The turning point in the themes and aesthetics of these
films was Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece Psycho (1960). Psycho (1960) was the launching pad for
slasher films to exhibit the features that make up today's slasher films. This essay will look at horror
and gender in the slasher films working closely with Pyscho. I will go on to discuss the influence it
has on contemporary slasher films such as Wes Craven's Scream (1996).
The slasher film has been around for many years and have many films that fall into the genre and
still remains popular due to successful films like American Psycho (Harron, 2000), Friday the 13th
(Cunningham, 1980) and Child's Play (Holland, 1988). Many standalone slasher films have been so
successful that they have spawned a number of interesting re–makes that have been successful or
flopped completely. Examples of this include the Halloween film franchise. The original Halloween
was released in 1978 and was directed by John Carpenter. Carpenters original focused on the killer
Michael Mayers, who stalks and kills

Subnatial Killers In Halloween And Wes Craven's A...
In every horror film, there is always a serial killer or supernatural being terrorizing an innocent
group of individuals. Films such as John Carpenter's Halloween and Wes Craven's A Nightmare on
Elm Street involve supernaturally–based serial killers who commit murders in the name of revenge.
The gory nature and explicit violence lead people to wonder why these monsters are created. Deep
in the typical human subconscious, there are fears and impulses that can only be released through
these films. When we watch horror films, we try our hardest to relate to the victims only to find out
that we are more connected to the villain. Each time the killer slits the blonde cheerleaders throat or
the demon drags the handsome football star to the greatest depths of hell, we feel as if it is well–
deserved. These scenes allow us to temporarily descend into the beautiful art of absurdity, which lies
within our minds, without physically hurting another person. Stephen King states in his essay titled
"Why We Crave Horror Movies" that "The potential lyncher is in almost all of us (excluding saints,
past and present; but then, most saints have been crazy in their own ways), and every now and then,
he has to let loose to scream and roll around in the grass." King is implying that even the sanest man
has a negative impulse stored deeply in his subconscious. Although a person may seem sane to the
public, they are capable of committing the most heinous crimes known to humanity, and may even
think

Sigmund Freud And The Interpretation Of Dreams
Before the chaos of the first worldwide conflict, the Great War, psychologists were looking deeper
into the human mind trying to find the hidden meaning of dreams. Deeper meaning began to creep
its way into both literature and art with both types of creators trying to convey meaning that is more
than meets the eye in their works. Symbolism became a popular movement with the increased
interest in psychology by those such as the famous psychologist, Sigmund Freud. This interest
continued to raise through the years following the Great War especially in the country most blamed
for the war, Germany. This blame and instability of the country fueled the expressionist movement
making the work created during this time emotional and cynical towards their situation. Through
these events and advancements in psychology works such as The Apparition by Gustave Moreau
and The Scream by Edvard Munch were created.
Sigmund Freud is well known for his interest in the human mind. In Freud's novel The Interpretation
of Dreams, published in 1913, explores the deeper meaning behind everyday life. His book explores
various meanings of common types of dreams, theories on how dreams relate to everyday life, and
two types of dreams: wish fulfilment dreams and distortion dreams. These types of dreams are
simply put good dreams vs nightmares. Sigmund Freud believed dreams were caused by a person's
experiences in waking life, fears, wishes, their unconscious and consciousness. Sigmund Freud

Essay on He Hit Me: A Short Story
"He hit me again, again, again and again," I whispered across the room to my brother Sam. His light
hair was wet and his blue eyes where dull. We were both 15 years old. We were twins and we had to
share a room. We had beds across from each other, and I we quietly conversed every night.
"He burned the back of my neck with mom's curling iron, 3 days ago, and it still feels like the sun is
sitting there."
"We have to do something, tell someone."
"Olivia we can't,"
"If you tell anyone you will regret it, I will make your life so miserable that you will want to jump
off a bridge and get eaten by a blood thirsty shark." His harsh shout in the dark made his gruff voice

with an obvious question, her face was worried. I spilled, I couldn't help it the words came pouring
out of my mouth, the farther I got the more tears spilled down my cheeks, I looked up her eyes were
tear filled. We both jumped when Sam came through the door. As soon as our eyes met he knew I
had told, at first he had an angry scared face, then his eyes slowly softened. It was very quiet; it
seemed that it had been forever, when a girl came through the door. She looked startled to see Sam;
she quickly left without a word. Once again it was silent.
"Sam you can't be in here......"
"Too late now"
"Sam?" Micah's voice was a surprise to him; he had never heard her talk.
"ummm ya?" I could tell it was hard for Sam to see her like this; he did have a crush on her.
"Is that what the burn mark is on your neck, I could tell that it was intentional because of the
shape?" My eyes filled with tears, I could still hear his dreadful scream ring out. He quickly glanced

My body jerked and my head spun as I stood like a soldier on its first day in basic training, as my
foot touched the cold floor my body was covered in goosebumps; I am half asleep; it is five in the
morning; I heard my aunt and mom scrambling the pans in the kitchen against each other my mom
planned to make fajita sandwiches. The house was filled with an acidic, lemony, and, rich aroma
that woke up my cousin. I heard a truck pass by thinking it was our uncle and I got ready like a
torpedo. I stepped outside, but to my surprise it was just the gas truck. Finally, after 20 minutes we
see my uncle's truck lights through the thick morning fog; we grabbed our lunches, and our hats, and
shuffled into the truck. We were headed toward Piedras de Lumbres, a little village where we were
going hike to see Saint Antonio del Varal. The trip to the village was smooth. When we got there,
Daniel, our uncle, was waiting for us; he brought a dog and she was a ball of energy jumping, trying
to touch the sky, and running like the wind. Daniel asked if we wanted to go the easy or the hard
way; me and my cousin screamed, "the hard way!" so we walked about 10 minutes in the road until
we saw a big hill. We all stopped and stood in silence ....... we just stared at each other the hill was,

Christian Munch, his father, also taught his son in history and literature, and entertained his children
with ghost–stories and books by Edgar Allan Poe, an American writer. Edvard remembered that
although his father was usually positive, this was sometimes overshadowed by his "madness".
Munch once stated, "My father was temperamentally nervous and obsessively religious – to the
point of psychoneurosis. From him I inherited the seeds of madness. The angels of fear, sorrow, and
death stood by my side since the day I was born." Christian also punished his children by saying that
their mother was watching them from heaven and was saddened by anything they did incorrectly.
These thoughts, Edvard's poor health, and the ghost stories he was told brought many nightmares; he
felt as if death was always close to him. One of Munch's younger sisters, Laura, was diagnosed with
a mental disease at an early age. Of the five children, only one, Andreas, got married, but died a few
months after the wedding. Munch also later wrote, "I inherited two of mankind's most frightful
enemies – the heritage of consumption and insanity." Christian Munch's payment from the military
was very little and he failed to get a job, keeping his family in poverty. The family moved frequently
from a cheap home to another. Munch's early drawings and watercolors showed these homes, and

How Did Edvard Munch Attempt to Visualize Intense Emotion...
Question 1: How did Edvard Munch attempt to visualize intense emotion in his paintings? Discuss
in relation to particular paintings. Edvard Munch is a highly influential artist, pioneering many of
the ideas that informed the German Expressionist movement. The crux of his work is in the
reflection the death, grief and emotion of his own experiences. Drawing from his own tortured
upbringing, with the death of his father, brother and sister, as well as his own mental and physical
illnesses. There are several ways in which he visualises this emotion in his work. Through form,
colour and technique Munch translates his obsession with psychological states into highly striking

Munch worked with many different styles throughout his career and the reduction of form shows the
influence of the expressionists and the art he would have seen while he lived intermittently in France
between 1889 and 1892. He changes focus from the representation of physical form and instead into
a study of psychological experience and passion that expresses a modernity of attitude. The colours,
dark in hue, but brilliant in intensity, scream of the intense emotion portrayed by Munch. His works
from the turn of the century have a reoccurring colour palette. Presenting the same window to a
tortured world with blood red skies, pale skinned beings, and dark mysterious corners. In one of his
earlier works, The Sick Child, made after the death of his younger sister, the colour scheme is
dominated by the relationship of a range of sea greens with a hot orange–red. It may be suggested
that the greens and reds themselves evoke the queasiness and fever of illness. The effect of the
colour scheme is deepened by the fact that these colours are complementaries, which gives a
dynamic effect in combination. Munch manipulates this element for emotional as well as aesthetic
effect. The girl's face glows with a pale yellow light, which is reflected in the stark white of the
bedhead in the background, in strong contrast to this is the dark blue–black of the woman's dress

When I opened my eyes I saw ten plus people with agonised faces like the one from that famous

Stephen King Why We Crave Horror Analysis
As a child my mom told me about her ghost story it made me not want to think or watch scary
movies. Just having the thought of knowing that something we can't see could be watching me
anywhere and everywhere gives us the chills. The fact when we think about it we crave to see horror
films. Why is it that people feel normal when we watch scary movies? According to Stephen King's
"Why We Crave Horror" says that we aren't normal and the things we feel towards movies are part
of the "Human Condition" which means like to have a dark side or sadness, mad, happy etc. The fact
that " Normal is an illusion. What is normal for the spider is chaos for the fly"( Morticia quote).
Stephen King rightly claims that us as humans crave horror to face our fears, get over the scary
things, and to get the feeling of our adrenaline rush. Humans now and maybe back then do crave
horror to face their fears. In Stephen King's story "Why We Crave Horror" he says "Our emotions
and our fears form their own body" (King "Why We Crave" 2). What he is stating towards us is that
fear makes us a human. As therefore he also said we are mentally ill and for us to be normal we
crave the need to face our fears and see horror. Why is it that we yet don't just want to watch these
horror, we make ourselves put them on? In Stephen King's story "Why We Crave Horror" he says
"We are the daring nightmare"(King "Why We Crave" 1). King is basically saying we dare ourselves

Gender Depiction in Horror Films Essay
Gender Depiction in Horror Films
There has been a large variety of horror films produced throughout the last fifty years. People are
always going to be frightened and scared by different types of horror films. But, what type of horror
film scares more people, and were men or women more frightened by these horror films? Each one
of the horror films had its own agenda to frighten its audience using several different methods of
horror. Some of these methods were more so directed at the female audience than the male audience.
Most horror movies show the female as being vulnerable, because in real life females are
defenseless against monsters.

It all goes back to the Perils of Pauline? If you have a haunted house and you have a woman walking
around with a candelabrum, you fear more for her than you would for a husky man? (Clover, p.77).
This is a good example of how making women instead of men defenseless in horror films more
entertaining. Even if the women are displayed as being more defenseless than men most of the time,
in some cases there will be someone that ends up saving them in the end.
Are women singled out to be killed more in slasher–films?
The first big stalker film stalker film to come out was John Carpenter?s Halloween in 1978.
Halloween took a reported $325,000 to be made and grossed over $80 million world wide up until
1987. This gave Halloween one of the highest proportional returns in film history (Waller, p. 87).
The first film to copy its narrative and cinematic structure was Friday the 13th . I believe that
younger community and women are the target market for stalker films like Halloween. Vera Dika
writes, ??R–rated films were frequented by adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17, and these
films of excessive violence against women found an audience that was 55 percent female? (Waller,
p. 87). Horror movies portray women as vulnerable a lot of the time. Especially in slasher movies,
women are often incapable of defending themselves against a stronger horror film–type villain. It is
almost like they are waiting to be victimized.

Film Review : ' Halloween '
Slasher films have been produced and released since the 1970s, with the most famous slasher film
being 'Halloween' (1974), which is recorded as the 'highest–grossing independent film of all time.'
[1] John Carpenter provided the original template to slasher films that have been re–used again and
again in its most popular period in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Slasher films involve a killer who
hunts down a bunch of teenagers and kills them graphically. Victims are usually young adults or
teenagers who are isolated and can't call for help. Most of the films begin with the murder of a
female and end in one female survivor who outwits the killer. Women in slasher films are exposed to
acts of extreme violence, sexualised by men and believed to be in need of saving. Mark Jancovich
stated that "it may be useful to make a distinction between the beauty and the beast in the horror
film" suggesting that women should be beautiful whilst the beast is gruesome and frightening. [2]
Other films such as 'Friday the 13th' (1980) 'The Cabin in the Woods' (2012) and 'Scream' (1997).
By comparing a mixture of old and more recent slasher films that involve similar storylines helps
build an understanding on why only females seem to prevail and men fall at the last hurdle. Using a
variety of theories that explore the representation of women and being able to contradict ideas.
An essential element in slasher films is the 'final–girl' – this refers to the "last woman alive to

Edvard Munch is regarded as the pioneer of the Expressionist movement in modern painting. At an
early stage Munch was recognised in Germany and central Europe as one of the creators of a new

that was happening around them.
Munch was born in 1863, and before long he had come to know the intensity of emotional pain. His
father was a doctor who often bought patients to the Munch home. His mother died when Edvard
was five years old, his older sister died of disease at the age of fifteen, and Edvard himself was often
ill. One of his youngest sisters was also diagnosed with a mental illness at an early age. With death

and appears to be sucking the life out of him.
Edvard wrote of the inspiration of the painting in his diary. The paintings showed emotion that had
never been expressed so openly through art before. This painting is laced with hidden meanings, the
faceless clock represents the uncertainty of the artists time left, the bed represents death, the
placement of the figure between these two pieces symbolises the decisions and issues he is

control. The body is distorted, twisted and disfigured with terror.
Edvard Munch's "The Scream" was painted around the end of the 19th century, and is possibly the
first Expressionist painting. The Scream was very different from the art of its time. During this time
artists tried to paint realistic paintings. Munch was a tortured soul, and it certainly showed in this
painting. Most of his family had died, and he was often plagued by sickness. The Scream was a
reflection of what was going on at the time, and what was going on in Munch's own mind
It seemed to me that I could hear the scream. I painted this picture; painted the clouds as real blood.

The Mutilator Movie Evaluation
1984 gave rise to quite a few quality slashers. You had Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, A
Nightmare on Elm Street and Silent Night, Deadly Night just to name a few. Today isn't about those
little hits, but instead, it's about the even littler guy, the low budget slasher known as The Mutilator
(aka Fall Break). Directed by Buddy Cooper, a man who loved slasher films and just wanted to
make a fun movie, The Mutilator is a hidden horror gem that deserves to be more recognized than it
is. It provides the gore, a bit of nudity and a fun vibe throughout the 86–minute runtime. What more
can you ask for in a slasher flick? The Mutilator was presented cut for the longest time, but

After the initial opening story setup involving a child named Ed cleaning a rifle for his dad's
birthday and accidentally shooting his mother with more precision than a trained sniper, we jump
ahead a few years to catch up with the little boy, now a full–grown college kid. The movie then
proceeds to play out like a '80s sitcom, with a theme song that will drive you utterly insane. Ed,
along with a group of friends are heading out to his dad's condo to close it up for the winter and
hijinks are going to be had. We're going to see the kids play monopoly and drinking games. They are
going to make out and fool around. They are going to run on the beach, whilst the instrumental
version of the theme song drives even further into your brain. It's a rather bizarre setup for a slasher
film, but in the end, The Mutilator is just that, a slasher film. It keeps the locations small, utilizing
the condo effectively, and providing a nice reason why it's difficult to call for help (the condo is
housed on an island and the police are across the bridge.) The movie also effectively flips the
protagonists around halfway through, which is rarely seen in a slasher

Horror In Stephen King's Why We Crave Horror Movies
The first time I watched a horror movie, I was nine years old. While all of my cousins shrieked and
closed their eyes, I felt totally engaged. Will we become more violent if we watch these movies?
Will we become a gore–loving, emotionally insensitive society? What is it about scary movies that
we love so much? It all comes back to the Human Condition. Facing our fears, establishing our
sense of normalcy, and experiencing a weird sort of fun are all solid claims that Stephen King states
in his essay "Why We Crave Horror Movies."
Horror is an opportunity for us humans to face our fears. Reading Stephen King's short story
"Strawberry Spring"is a perfect example that we use horror to "show that...we are not afraid" (King,
"Why We Crave" 1). We go to prove ourselves as brave. In comparison, watching horror movies is
alike "daring the nightmare" (King, "Why We Crave" 1). In this case, the "nightmare" is facing our
fears, considering horror films are equivalent to going through a literal nightmare. To point out, the
narrator in "Strawberry Spring" is "enchanted by that dark and mist–blown strawberry spring, and
by the shadow of violent death that walked through it..." (King, "Strawberry Spring" 1). As a matter
of fact, we are all enchanted by the darkness in the story just as the narrator is. Additionally, King
describes this process as riding a roller coaster by reason of "a really good horror movie may...
surprise a scream out of us... the way we may scream when the roller coaster

Insanity In Edvard Munch's One Flew Over The Cuckoo
"The Scream" by Edvard Munch can be depicted through the novel One Flew over the Cuckoo's
Nest in a few ways. "The Scream" symbolizes the anguish and pain of modern life. One of the major
themes that is represented in the novel is the idea of being falsely diagnosed of insanity. This
artwork shows a figure, male or female, holding his or her head as if he or she is trying to ignore
reality or is completely mad. It represents the time in the story when McMurphy arranges a fishing

Worst New Years in My Life The carpeted floor was covered with dust, while I washing my hands.
As I walk outside I could see world renowned Sydney's, New Year's fireworks shoot across the sky.
The vibrant colors and the designs were beautiful. I could hear the sharp sounds of people across

Edvard Munch The Scream Analysis
Specifically, are there artists whose creative practice might be viewed as art therapy? There are
artists that have used their art to work through pain and mental illness. Edvard Munch is best known
for 'The Scream', many of his other works also explore intense psychological themes. He suffered
from deep depression during his lifetime and his art often reflected events that happened to him.
"Sickness insanity and death were the angels that surrounded my cradle and they have followed me
throughout my life." (Edvard Munch; www.goodreads.com)
Many of Munch's other paintings also express the depressed and hopeless mood that tormented him
throughout his life, his obsession with death and his overwhelming fears. These include; "Blossom
of pain" "Vampire" "Anxiety" "Death in the sick chamber" "Melancholy" "Self–portrait in distress"
"The death bed". (See figure 2) The Scream by the Norwegian artist Edward Munch is the second
most famous image in art history, after Leonardo's Mona Lisa. There are actually four versions of
The Scream that Munch created in his lifetime. It has been suggested that the Scream is a self–
portrait or that inspiration came from a Peruvian mummy that Munch saw at the World's Fair in
Paris in 1889. The following works were hand–painted by Munch in poetic form on the Frame of the
1895 version.
"I was walking along a path with two friends, the sun was setting, suddenly the sky turned blood red
I paused, feeling exhausted and leaned on the fence there was blood and tongues of the fire above
the blue, black fjord and the city, my friends walked on and I stood there trembling with anxiety and
I sensed an infinite, scream passing through nature." (Edward Munch; www.goodreads.com)
When looked at 'The Scream' it seems like someone full of pain and unable to cope anymore, as
Munch suffered from anxiety and agoraphobia. Does the painting portray someone, screaming for
freedom or are they are in deep emotional pain and despair? When you look at the painting the two
main colours are orange and blue, how does the contrasting colours add to the overall impact? The

The Curse Of
Trixy
The lights flickered and then went out, then the sirens started, she was coming, and we knew it
wouldn't be the last. For one hundred eighty–six years our town has been stuck under the curse of
the snake, the curse of Trixy. Every two years a statue of an interminable snake in the center of our
town came to life. She would then terrorize the town, slaughtering people left and right. She called
herself Trixy, and every time she comes people say she gets stronger. Her massacre has already
begun, and all I can do is sit helplessly in a safe house. Helplessly. I hate being helpless.
People around me are praying that their friends and family will live, some crying because of who's
already died. I know my sister is gone. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Josephine held her baby boy close to her chest, repeating the same little lullaby. The poor thing!
Trixy slithered over to her, leering at the baby hungrily. I couldn't bear this anymore. I yank out my
pocket knife and I slowly snuck over to Trixy. She obviously heard me, for she turned around and
and smiled. "Well, well, well, isn't this interesting. A mortal verses a being of amazing power... I
wonder who will win this fight?" Her little tongue, black as the night sky, popped in and out as she
spoke. Suddenly, a rush of adrenaline went through me. I was being talked to like I was a five year
old weakling! "Heh, I always thought you'd be bigger than this." I taunted coolly. If I could get her
out of the safe house with taunts, she just might get shot by our police officers. Just like before.
Except this time, she hopefully won't go back to her statue to heal. Trixy glared at me and hissed,l
"What?" I smiled, trying not to let my voice shake or let my knees wobble. "Yeah, you're ten times
smaller than I imagined. Also that 'icy glare' of yours is like a cat glare. A house cat glare! It really
isn't that frightening." Trixy kept glaring at me, probably getting ready

The Scream Is One Of The Most Recognized Pieces Of Art
Edvard Munch's painting The Scream is one of the most recognized pieces of art throughout history.
He created this masterpiece in the year of 1893 and continued on to create three different versions of
the painting (Paulson). The image shows a deathly pale, skull shaped head man clutching his hands
over his ears, facing the audience, screaming with his mouth opened wide. There are two silhouettes
behind the screaming man on the left hand side of the bridge, while the sky is bloody and the water
in the fjord rushing. On Edvard Munch's official website, the biography mentions that Munch grew
up with is mother and older sister, his two role models, dying from tuberculosis at a young age.
Leaving him and his younger siblings with their emotionally detached father, who would torment
them about going to hell and burning, "among other issues" (Munch). The emotional torment Munch
went through in his early life, plagued him throughout his life and career, which resulted him
creating many different works of art with the sense of loneliness and desperation. Munch's use of
contrast and composition symbolizes the representation of man; the inner turmoil one may face
throughout life. Munch's use of a bold composition intends to show the viewers the intended form
and structure of the painting. There are three dynamic lines within the painting: the line for railing,
the line for the blood red horizon, and the line showing the flow of the fjord. All these lines are to
direct the viewers eye

Insanity In Edvard Munch's The Scream
In his diaries, the artist Edvard Munch admits that he struggled with insanity not only on a personal
level during his life, but also through his family. In fact, his sister was hospitalized for insanity at the
time The Scream was painted in 1893. If given a thorough enough analysis, the personal lives of
most artists are not perfect portraits of happiness. The thing that makes Edvard Munch a different
kind of artist is that he shows us an honest, even ugly, glimpse of his inner troubles and feelings of
anxiety through his painting The Scream, putting more importance on personal meaning than on
technical skill or "beauty," a traditional goal of art. According to Munch's personal diaries, the idea

Then I heard the enormous infinite scream of nature." So what does this quote actually mean? On
the surface, Munch describes a normal evening in Norway, taking a walk at sunset with some friends
beside a "fjord." While an evening out walking by the water might sound relaxing and enjoyable at
first, on closer look we see that Munch is really describing a moment of an almost undeniable
personal crisis. In the painting's background, we can see two people walking away in the other
direction, creating the feelings of isolation and "fear" the artist talks about in his quotation. In the
manner of a true Expressionist painter, Munch uses color to express his emotional reactions to his
environment, commenting on the "red" sky and the "bluish black" fjord, described almost as an all–
consuming black hole hell where "tongues of fire" viciously lick at the weary and overwhelmed
subject, which is a genderless figure. While there is certainly something gloomy about Munch's
description of The Scream landscape, the repeated use of the word "blood" in combination with the
twirling, swirling, and whirling warm tones used to paint the background suggest actual physical

A Modern Artist From Norway
Edvard Munch, a modern artist from Norway, born in Løten in Hedmark on 12 December 1863. He
grew up in a family of seven, with four other siblings, a mother and father characteristics of a happy
family but instead turn out to be quite the opposite. As a child he suffered from chronic asthmatic

Munch would always be reminded of his family's death, their torment followed his shadow and
further encroached on his mind the more time went on. Various styles, motifs, and paintings from
artists such as Claude Monet and Eugène Carrière inspired his work. However, Carrière's Sick
Child, 1885 would be a pivoting point in influencing his own painting of the same name. One of
Munch's first work that showed his notorious style can be seen in The Sick Child, 1886 painting just
a year after Carrière's. His painting depicts his sister Sophie bedridden from Tuberculosis and his
mother mourning beside her waiting for her to pass. He paints in a very melancholy tone and the
color gives the viewer the impression of sickness and sorrow. He expresses his feelings years later
describing how "'few have ever experienced the full grief of their subject as I did in The Sick
Child.'"(qtd. in Prideaux 85–86). Munch's painterly style allows us to feel the anguish and pain he
must have felt while painting The Sick Child. His process is also rather significant compared to the
end product itself and provides clear insight into his emotional state whilst he painted.
Munch not only painted with a brush but he chose to also use a palette knife for this particular
painting to show the marks of visible misery, which can be seen with the scratchy and unfinished
texture. What is even more interesting is his use of layers. His determination in layering his painting

Edvard Munch's Painting Scream Munich Essay
Edvard Munch's Painting Scream Munich
Edvard Munch is looked upon as one of the most significant influences on the development of
expressionism. Edvard Munch was quoted as saying "We want more than a mere photograph of
nature. We do not want to paint pretty pictures to be hung on drawing–room walls. We want to
create, or at least lay the foundations of, an art that gives something to humanity. An art that arrests
and engages. An art created of one's innermost heart." I believe in The Scream Munch did just as he
said.
The expressionism period was a movement to invoke emotions through art work. In The Scream
Munch stirs up emotions through his heavy brush work and the use of unnatural colors. The use of

In 1908, Munch had a nervous breakdown, a culmination of his anxiety and fears going all the way
back to his childhood. During the years pervious to this he had experienced some of the most
extreme emotions humans can. At age 5, his mother died and at 14 , his favorite sister, Sophie dies
as well. Tuberculosis entered his childhood bring him horrid visions of death, pain, paranoia, and
despair.
It was with these emotions Munch eventually, in 1893, brought to the canvas of The Scream. He
tried to create the all encompassing emotion of total complete undeniable despair. When all hope is
gone; when death is eventual; when the world seems to be completely aganist you and there is
nothing you can do about any of it. The Scream displays the despair of life as he had experienced
one day while walking with his friends. As he has written himself "I was walking along the road
with two friends. The sun set. I felt a tinge of melancholy. Suddenly the sky became a bloody red. I
stopped, leaned aganist the railing, dead tired, and I looked at the flaming clouds that hung like
blood and a sword over the blue–black fjord and the city. My friends walked on. I stood there,
trembling with fright. And I felt a loud, unending scream piercing nature."

Descriptive Essay On The Insane Asylum
The Insane Asylum.
One day I walked into one of my client's room and stopped dead. Written in what looked like
charcoal was a bunch of people's torsos and heads. There was blood all over the bed and the client
was under the bed literally deflated. No bones, blood, organs, just the skin and eyeballs. I had
immediately ran back out and got a guard and when we came back to the room the body was gone.
One of the drawings had a great big x across it written in more blood. Freaking out, we had called
the cops and shut and locked every door. Two weeks had passed the police force couldn't figure out
who had killed the man, especially since there was no body to work with. Going back into the crime
scene I counted all the people on the wall. The same amount on the wall was the same amount of
clients we had plus one. Just then I heard a high pitched scream and watched a great big x appear in
blood on a charcoaled person. I knew immediately what had happened.
Racing toward the scream looking through the rooms I saw something that will haunt my dreams
forever. A client was throwing up all her own blood, organs, and bones with a shadowy figure
behind her holding a bottle. Right after I burst into her room the lights flickered off into a complete
darkness. I was pushed down and a drop acid green liquid landed on my shoulder and burned me. It
hurt so bad that it had knocked me out cold.
When I had awaken I was on the couch in my boss's office. He looked grave as he spoke, "As I hear
it you were in Elena's room when she died and I would like to know everything that had happened.
The sooner you tell me the better because there are five dead in total now.
"Well, I heard a scream and I started running to the noise looking through the rooms as I passed.
When I got to her room I had looked through and she was vomiting her bones, organs, and blood up.
There was also a shadow like object or... or a someone holding a bottle. I ran into the room and it
went pitch black something knocked me over and then green acid type stuff landed on my shoulder
and burned me. That is all I remember."
"Well, I don't know what to do except to move them out of the hospital completely or to station a
guard right outside of each room." There was a long

Short Story: Susan Hills
So she sat there in the cold dank cave waiting for something to happen anything to let her know how
to escape from them. The masked figures appeared from the shadows even though she had tried to
follow them she could never get out of here. She had punched bitten torn at the hoods covering them
yet they didn't move and she ended up bruised and bleeding every time even though they never
raised a hand at her. She sighs and shouts "fuckk you all! Fuck you all I will escape and kill you all
so piss in your hands and bath in your shit you pricks!" Breathing heavy after all the shouting she
lies down and trys to remember who she is counting the facts in her head. 1. Her name was Susan

Chapter 2: The first link
PART 1– This is the world we made.
25 years ago:
The crunch of foliage under his boots was the only sound for miles, as the knight Siegfried marched
through the woodlands on a lone patrol. His sword was sheathed and on his hip as he pushed aside
bushes and low hanging branches. "Blasted nettles" he cursed as he pushed through a bush, relying
on his steel armor to protect him. "Why do they even send us on patrol anyway?" He rambled to
himself "Every evil thing that crawls, walks, slithers, swims or flies on this planet has been quiet."
He was jolted out of his thoughts by a piercing scream that echoed throughout the woodlands and in
three seconds, just like he was trained: his sword was out, his shield was in his right hand, and his
visor was down. This was done as a second scream pierced his ears. Siegfried ran in the direction of
the scream knocking bushes and vines away with his weapons.
The scream came from a young elven woman, who currently was surrounded by a pack of trolls and
they snarled at her and waved their weapons in her direction. The elven woman was covered in
bruises and was struggling to stand on her legs. She held a dagger in a shaky hand with fear written
on her pretty features.
The trolls advanced in her direction

Critical Analysis On The Scream By Edvard Munch Essay

  • 1. Critical Analysis on The Scream by Edvard Munch Essay Critical Analysis on The Scream by Edvard Munch Edvard Munch was born on December 12 1863 in Loten Norway. He moved to Christiana, and spent most of his childhood there. Both his mother and his oldest sister suffered from tuberculosis and died before he reached the age of 14. At 18 he became more serious about his art and started attending art school. Edvard finally found a release for the pain he felt from his sister's death. In 1886 he painted "The Sick Child". The painting was so emotionally charged that it received a lot of criticism from the press and the public. However some of his artist colleagues began to recognize his talent. The same year another tragedy struck. His father died in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Expressionism is not an art that is based on reality of something but more on the emotion of the thing. E.g. there is a painting of a man sitting on a chair. But in Expressionist painting the colours, emotion and shapes would show the mans emotions to show a completely different picture and story. This is why Expressionist art is so unique and distinctive as it can tell a whole different story, and show so may different deep emotions and feelings in one painting. Expressionism is one of the most popular types of art in the later 19th and the 20th centuries. It shows an individual, impulsive, self–expressionate piece of art. Edvard Munch used a range of expressive colours like Reds, dark blues, and oranges. The sky is filled with fiery reds and oranges. This could represent the anger, frustration in the artist life. The ocean is filled with cold blues and greens. This could symbolise depression despair and misery in Edvard Munch's life. There is also a whirlpool in the middle of the ocean. Where there looks like there are a few boats are getting pulled in. I think this represents that Edvard Munch is stuck in the middle of emotions, fury and anger or depression and misery of the loss of his family. They are both trying to suck him in and he is trying to escape. There are 2 other boats in the picture. I thought that these might symbolise other ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As I walk outside I could see world renowned Sydney's, New Year's fireworks shoot across the sky. The vibrant colors and the designs were beautiful. I could hear the sharp sounds of people across Sydney, Australia celebrating New Years. I could hear the laughter all throughout the house. I can hear the beautiful music ringing in my ears. Everyone was enjoying the beautiful party. The carpeted floor gave me a weird feeling. There were dust particles scattered throughout the floor. Suddenly, my nose starts to itch, my ears hear a ringing sound like no other. I walked down the hall of my aunt's friends house seeing if it really actually hurt. "Oh. It must be nothing." I thought. I walked up and down watching the tulips, roses, and orchids everywhere. "Saahil. You are crying."My sister said. "What?" It must be just something in my eye." I called. My eyes start to hurt my eyes start burn. I go to the bathroom and put water in my eye. I look in the mirror and I see myself with two almost completely red eyes. I try to open my eyes and do not see anything. I try to let out a scream, but cannot. The stinging was jack–knifing me in my brain. The tears roll down my cheek. I blindly walk toward my mom. I try to open my eyes and it automatically closes. "It hurts Mom! It hurts!" I cried. I feel a sudden urge to lie down. "Saahil, what is wrong? What happened?" My mom worried. I tell her ... States Of Feelings Through Collaboration Or Series States of Feelings through Collaboration or Series Everyone has feeling whether they show them or not, and they have a great impact on how, what and why we create art. However, how much of our emotions are shown through our facial expressions? How well can another read those expressions versus how well can we read that same person's of state of emotion through their art. None the less anger may result in strong gestural painting. Addition to anger any strong emotion can come through in whatever we create. History shows us that great works can come from a highly agitated state of emotion. This goes along with what Edvard Munch said about The Scream (1893), "For several years I was almost mad... You know my picture, The Scream? I was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What is the juxtaposition between the feeling in the photograph and the title. If we observe the color pallets used in the examples we can see that they inspire melancholy in the audience. Color can be pivotal when expressing your state of feelings. How much do our deeper emotions drive our creations and do we ever hold back for fear of repercussions from our audience? Are you willing to put raw emotion out there for others to judge? How would you feel about sharing that with someone else? Collaborating on a piece that is deeply involved with your feelings. Would you feel safe to express your state of feeling through a work with another. Art evokes strong feelings in those that perceive it. When we look at art our state of feeling changes depending on what you see. Feelings are a fluid experience, constantly changing throughout the day. What would happen if you recorded your state of feeling over a period of time? The picture to the left is of the National Geographic's Girl with the Green Eyes. • 7. Why I Love Horror Movies Essay 3/22/2012 English 100 The Best of Horror movies Many people would say that their favorite way to have fun is to go to a beautiful beach and build sand castles or hang out with their friends at the mall. But for me, put me in a dark theater with a murderous psychopath on the loose threatening teenagers and I am happy. I am a lover of horror movies. This is something that I don't always tell people, because it seems kind of weird to enjoy being scared and grossed out by lots of blood and gore. But in fact, I love horror movies, and I am not alone. And I am not crazy. Horror movies can be not only fun, but some experts have even argued that they are harmless or even good for us. There are many people who say that horror ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Out of all of them I was the only one who was not afraid. I did not scream, nor did I ever cover my eyes like they did. At one point Barbara tried to leave in the middle of the movie because it was too "scary" I quickly put my leg up in front of her and told her "relax its not even that scary we didn't pay ten dollars just to see half of the movie and leave". She stayed but it would have been a good idea if I had let her go. Why? Because she constantly kept screaming every 10 seconds a "scary" part came up in the movie. Farah on the other hand was trying to keep it "cool and tough" just like I was, she didn't scream much but the expression on her face was priceless, you can tell she was scared. But I kept laughing at them and saying "it's not even that serious" so they probably thought I was really "tough". So this is what Stephen King means when he says we try to prove how strong we are or how cool we can play it knowing that the movie is really scary. Most interestingly, he says "By the time one turns 40 or 50, one's appetite for double twists or 360 degree loops may be considerably depleted" (King) Once we start to get older our love for horror movies start to disappear and we become little kids again that are afraid to watch scary movies. So King is also basically saying that mostly the younger generation prefers to watch horror movies. "That may explain why horror movies are most popular with younger audiences. Teens and twenty– somethings "are more likely to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Horror And Film : Hitchcock 's Masterpiece Psycho Essay Genres are broad titles that most often than not have many sub genres that work under them. Horror is an example of this. Under the horror category you have many sub genres like vampire films, gothic horrors and slashers. The Slasher film has become a defining subgenre of the horror film. While the origins of the slasher come from their predecessor the Italian giallo films they have had a massive American influence in recent times. The turning point in the themes and aesthetics of these films was Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece Psycho (1960). Psycho (1960) was the launching pad for slasher films to exhibit the features that make up today's slasher films. This essay will look at horror and gender in the slasher films working closely with Pyscho. I will go on to discuss the influence it has on contemporary slasher films such as Wes Craven's Scream (1996). The slasher film has been around for many years and have many films that fall into the genre and still remains popular due to successful films like American Psycho (Harron, 2000), Friday the 13th (Cunningham, 1980) and Child's Play (Holland, 1988). Many standalone slasher films have been so successful that they have spawned a number of interesting re–makes that have been successful or flopped completely. Examples of this include the Halloween film franchise. The original Halloween was released in 1978 and was directed by John Carpenter. Carpenters original focused on the killer Michael Mayers, who stalks and kills ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Subnatial Killers In Halloween And Wes Craven's A... In every horror film, there is always a serial killer or supernatural being terrorizing an innocent group of individuals. Films such as John Carpenter's Halloween and Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street involve supernaturally–based serial killers who commit murders in the name of revenge. The gory nature and explicit violence lead people to wonder why these monsters are created. Deep in the typical human subconscious, there are fears and impulses that can only be released through these films. When we watch horror films, we try our hardest to relate to the victims only to find out that we are more connected to the villain. Each time the killer slits the blonde cheerleaders throat or the demon drags the handsome football star to the greatest depths of hell, we feel as if it is well– deserved. These scenes allow us to temporarily descend into the beautiful art of absurdity, which lies within our minds, without physically hurting another person. Stephen King states in his essay titled "Why We Crave Horror Movies" that "The potential lyncher is in almost all of us (excluding saints, past and present; but then, most saints have been crazy in their own ways), and every now and then, he has to let loose to scream and roll around in the grass." King is implying that even the sanest man has a negative impulse stored deeply in his subconscious. Although a person may seem sane to the public, they are capable of committing the most heinous crimes known to humanity, and may even think ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Sigmund Freud And The Interpretation Of Dreams Before the chaos of the first worldwide conflict, the Great War, psychologists were looking deeper into the human mind trying to find the hidden meaning of dreams. Deeper meaning began to creep its way into both literature and art with both types of creators trying to convey meaning that is more than meets the eye in their works. Symbolism became a popular movement with the increased interest in psychology by those such as the famous psychologist, Sigmund Freud. This interest continued to raise through the years following the Great War especially in the country most blamed for the war, Germany. This blame and instability of the country fueled the expressionist movement making the work created during this time emotional and cynical towards their situation. Through these events and advancements in psychology works such as The Apparition by Gustave Moreau and The Scream by Edvard Munch were created. Sigmund Freud is well known for his interest in the human mind. In Freud's novel The Interpretation of Dreams, published in 1913, explores the deeper meaning behind everyday life. His book explores various meanings of common types of dreams, theories on how dreams relate to everyday life, and two types of dreams: wish fulfilment dreams and distortion dreams. These types of dreams are simply put good dreams vs nightmares. Sigmund Freud believed dreams were caused by a person's experiences in waking life, fears, wishes, their unconscious and consciousness. Munch once stated, "My father was temperamentally nervous and obsessively religious – to the point of psychoneurosis. From him I inherited the seeds of madness. The angels of fear, sorrow, and death stood by my side since the day I was born." Christian also punished his children by saying that their mother was watching them from heaven and was saddened by anything they did incorrectly. These thoughts, Edvard's poor health, and the ghost stories he was told brought many nightmares; he felt as if death was always close to him. One of Munch's younger sisters, Laura, was diagnosed with a mental disease at an early age. Of the five children, only one, Andreas, got married, but died a few months after the wedding. • 23. How Did Edvard Munch Attempt to Visualize Intense Emotion... Question 1: How did Edvard Munch attempt to visualize intense emotion in his paintings? Discuss in relation to particular paintings. Edvard Munch is a highly influential artist, pioneering many of the ideas that informed the German Expressionist movement. The crux of his work is in the reflection the death, grief and emotion of his own experiences. Drawing from his own tortured upbringing, with the death of his father, brother and sister, as well as his own mental and physical illnesses. There are several ways in which he visualises this emotion in his work. Through form, colour and technique Munch translates his obsession with psychological states into highly striking works that have resounded through generations of artists and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Munch worked with many different styles throughout his career and the reduction of form shows the influence of the expressionists and the art he would have seen while he lived intermittently in France between 1889 and 1892. He changes focus from the representation of physical form and instead into a study of psychological experience and passion that expresses a modernity of attitude. The colours, dark in hue, but brilliant in intensity, scream of the intense emotion portrayed by Munch. His works from the turn of the century have a reoccurring colour palette. Presenting the same window to a tortured world with blood red skies, pale skinned beings, and dark mysterious corners. In one of his earlier works, The Sick Child, made after the death of his younger sister, the colour scheme is dominated by the relationship of a range of sea greens with a hot orange–red. It may be suggested that the greens and reds themselves evoke the queasiness and fever of illness. The effect of the colour scheme is deepened by the fact that these colours are complementaries, which gives a dynamic effect in combination. Munch manipulates this element for emotional as well as aesthetic effect. The girl's face glows with a pale yellow light, which is reflected in the stark white of the bedhead in the background, in strong contrast to this is the dark blue–black of the woman's dress adding intensity ... Just having the thought of knowing that something we can't see could be watching me anywhere and everywhere gives us the chills. The fact when we think about it we crave to see horror films. Why is it that people feel normal when we watch scary movies? According to Stephen King's "Why We Crave Horror" says that we aren't normal and the things we feel towards movies are part of the "Human Condition" which means like to have a dark side or sadness, mad, happy etc. The fact that " Normal is an illusion. What is normal for the spider is chaos for the fly"( Morticia quote). Stephen King rightly claims that us as humans crave horror to face our fears, get over the scary things, and to get the feeling of our adrenaline rush. Humans now and maybe back then do crave horror to face their fears. In Stephen King's story "Why We Crave Horror" he says "Our emotions and our fears form their own body" (King "Why We Crave" 2). What he is stating towards us is that fear makes us a human. As therefore he also said we are mentally ill and for us to be normal we crave the need to face our fears and see horror. Why is it that we yet don't just want to watch these horror, we make ourselves put them on? In Stephen King's story "Why We Crave Horror" he says "We are the daring nightmare"(King "Why We Crave" 1). Film Review : ' Halloween ' Slasher films have been produced and released since the 1970s, with the most famous slasher film being 'Halloween' (1974), which is recorded as the 'highest–grossing independent film of all time.' [1] John Carpenter provided the original template to slasher films that have been re–used again and again in its most popular period in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Slasher films involve a killer who hunts down a bunch of teenagers and kills them graphically. Victims are usually young adults or teenagers who are isolated and can't call for help. Most of the films begin with the murder of a female and end in one female survivor who outwits the killer. Women in slasher films are exposed to acts of extreme violence, sexualised by men and believed to be in need of saving. Mark Jancovich stated that "it may be useful to make a distinction between the beauty and the beast in the horror film" suggesting that women should be beautiful whilst the beast is gruesome and frightening. [2] Other films such as 'Friday the 13th' (1980) 'The Cabin in the Woods' (2012) and 'Scream' (1997). By comparing a mixture of old and more recent slasher films that involve similar storylines helps build an understanding on why only females seem to prevail and men fall at the last hurdle. Using a variety of theories that explore the representation of women and being able to contradict ideas. At an early stage Munch was recognised in Germany and central Europe as one of the creators of a new and different movement of art, that helped artists to express their feelings about all the social change that was happening around them. Munch was born in 1863, and before long he had come to know the intensity of emotional pain. His father was a doctor who often bought patients to the Munch home. • 39. Horror In Stephen King's Why We Crave Horror Movies The first time I watched a horror movie, I was nine years old. While all of my cousins shrieked and closed their eyes, I felt totally engaged. Will we become more violent if we watch these movies? Will we become a gore–loving, emotionally insensitive society? What is it about scary movies that we love so much? It all comes back to the Human Condition. Facing our fears, establishing our sense of normalcy, and experiencing a weird sort of fun are all solid claims that Stephen King states in his essay "Why We Crave Horror Movies." Horror is an opportunity for us humans to face our fears. Reading Stephen King's short story "Strawberry Spring"is a perfect example that we use horror to "show that...we are not afraid" (King, "Why We Crave" 1). We go to prove ourselves as brave. In comparison, watching horror movies is alike "daring the nightmare" (King, "Why We Crave" 1). In this case, the "nightmare" is facing our fears, considering horror films are equivalent to going through a literal nightmare. To point out, the narrator in "Strawberry Spring" is "enchanted by that dark and mist–blown strawberry spring, and by the shadow of violent death that walked through it..." (King, "Strawberry Spring" 1). As a matter of fact, we are all enchanted by the darkness in the story just as the narrator is. Additionally, King describes this process as riding a roller coaster by reason of "a really good horror movie may... surprise a scream out of us... the way we may scream when the roller coaster ... • 49. Edvard Munch The Scream Analysis Specifically, are there artists whose creative practice might be viewed as art therapy? There are artists that have used their art to work through pain and mental illness. Edvard Munch is best known for 'The Scream', many of his other works also explore intense psychological themes. He suffered from deep depression during his lifetime and his art often reflected events that happened to him. "Sickness insanity and death were the angels that surrounded my cradle and they have followed me throughout my life." (Edvard Munch; www.goodreads.com) Many of Munch's other paintings also express the depressed and hopeless mood that tormented him throughout his life, his obsession with death and his overwhelming fears. These include; "Blossom of pain" "Vampire" "Anxiety" "Death in the sick chamber" "Melancholy" "Self–portrait in distress" "The death bed". (See figure 2) The Scream by the Norwegian artist Edward Munch is the second most famous image in art history, after Leonardo's Mona Lisa. There are actually four versions of The Scream that Munch created in his lifetime. It has been suggested that the Scream is a self– portrait or that inspiration came from a Peruvian mummy that Munch saw at the World's Fair in Paris in 1889. The following works were hand–painted by Munch in poetic form on the Frame of the 1895 version. "I was walking along a path with two friends, the sun was setting, suddenly the sky turned blood red I paused, feeling exhausted and leaned on the fence there was blood and tongues of the fire above the blue, black fjord and the city, my friends walked on and I stood there trembling with anxiety and I sensed an infinite, scream passing through nature." (Edward Munch; www.goodreads.com) When looked at 'The Scream' it seems like someone full of pain and unable to cope anymore, as Munch suffered from anxiety and agoraphobia. Does the painting portray someone, screaming for freedom or are they are in deep emotional pain and despair? When you look at the painting the two main colours are orange and blue, how does the contrasting colours add to the overall impact? The bright swirling sky and the person, ... • 51. An Excerpt From 'The Curse Of Trixy' The Curse Of Trixy The lights flickered and then went out, then the sirens started, she was coming, and we knew it wouldn't be the last. For one hundred eighty–six years our town has been stuck under the curse of the snake, the curse of Trixy. Every two years a statue of an interminable snake in the center of our town came to life. She would then terrorize the town, slaughtering people left and right. She called herself Trixy, and every time she comes people say she gets stronger. Her massacre has already begun, and all I can do is sit helplessly in a safe house. Helplessly. I hate being helpless. People around me are praying that their friends and family will live, some crying because of who's already died. I know my sister is gone. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Slowly, Trixy gazed across the room, her icy blue eyes like slits. "How odd. I thought this would be hard, looks like I had thought wrong." She hissed evilly. Suddenly, I heard a baby's cry. My aunt, Josephine held her baby boy close to her chest, repeating the same little lullaby. The poor thing! Trixy slithered over to her, leering at the baby hungrily. I couldn't bear this anymore. I yank out my pocket knife and I slowly snuck over to Trixy. She obviously heard me, for she turned around and and smiled. "Well, well, well, isn't this interesting. A mortal verses a being of amazing power... I wonder who will win this fight?" Her little tongue, black as the night sky, popped in and out as she spoke. Suddenly, a rush of adrenaline went through me. I was being talked to like I was a five year old weakling! "Heh, I always thought you'd be bigger than this." I taunted coolly. If I could get her out of the safe house with taunts, she just might get shot by our police officers. Just like before. Except this time, she hopefully won't go back to her statue to heal. Trixy glared at me and hissed,l "What?" I smiled, trying not to let my voice shake or let my knees wobble. "Yeah, you're ten times smaller than I imagined. Also that 'icy glare' of yours is like a cat glare. A house cat glare! It really isn't that frightening." Trixy kept glaring at me, probably getting ready ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Usually, artists use wooden block to print will not show the pattern of the wood itself, however, Munch tries to use the pattern as part of his prints. Because the pattern add more emotional feeling to the prints. He chooses black ink to print as black provides intimidating, unfriendly and unapproachable feeling. Munch used semi–transparent ink to let the wood pattern emerging with the kissed couple to create emotion. • 57. The Scream Is One Of The Most Recognized Pieces Of Art Edvard Munch's painting The Scream is one of the most recognized pieces of art throughout history. He created this masterpiece in the year of 1893 and continued on to create three different versions of the painting (Paulson). The image shows a deathly pale, skull shaped head man clutching his hands over his ears, facing the audience, screaming with his mouth opened wide. There are two silhouettes behind the screaming man on the left hand side of the bridge, while the sky is bloody and the water in the fjord rushing. On Edvard Munch's official website, the biography mentions that Munch grew up with is mother and older sister, his two role models, dying from tuberculosis at a young age. Leaving him and his younger siblings with their emotionally detached father, who would torment them about going to hell and burning, "among other issues" (Munch). The emotional torment Munch went through in his early life, plagued him throughout his life and career, which resulted him creating many different works of art with the sense of loneliness and desperation. Munch's use of contrast and composition symbolizes the representation of man; the inner turmoil one may face throughout life. Munch's use of a bold composition intends to show the viewers the intended form and structure of the painting. There are three dynamic lines within the painting: the line for railing, the line for the blood red horizon, and the line showing the flow of the fjord. All these lines are to direct the viewers eye ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Munch was always heavily interested in death and illness due to childhood experiences, and portrayed that in his art. He worked with an abundance of mediums, making him a well experienced artist and up to date, making his work very interesting and diverse. • 63. Insanity In Edvard Munch's The Scream In his diaries, the artist Edvard Munch admits that he struggled with insanity not only on a personal level during his life, but also through his family. In fact, his sister was hospitalized for insanity at the time The Scream was painted in 1893. If given a thorough enough analysis, the personal lives of most artists are not perfect portraits of happiness. The thing that makes Edvard Munch a different kind of artist is that he shows us an honest, even ugly, glimpse of his inner troubles and feelings of anxiety through his painting The Scream, putting more importance on personal meaning than on technical skill or "beauty," a traditional goal of art. According to Munch's personal diaries, the idea for the modern art painting The Scream came ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Then I heard the enormous infinite scream of nature." So what does this quote actually mean? On the surface, Munch describes a normal evening in Norway, taking a walk at sunset with some friends beside a "fjord." While an evening out walking by the water might sound relaxing and enjoyable at first, on closer look we see that Munch is really describing a moment of an almost undeniable personal crisis. In the painting's background, we can see two people walking away in the other direction, creating the feelings of isolation and "fear" the artist talks about in his quotation. In the manner of a true Expressionist painter, Munch uses color to express his emotional reactions to his environment, commenting on the "red" sky and the "bluish black" fjord, described almost as an all– consuming black hole hell where "tongues of fire" viciously lick at the weary and overwhelmed subject, which is a genderless figure. While there is certainly something gloomy about Munch's description of The Scream landscape, the repeated use of the word "blood" in combination with the twirling, swirling, and whirling warm tones used to paint the background suggest actual physical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Munch would always be reminded of his family's death, their torment followed his shadow and further encroached on his mind the more time went on. Various styles, motifs, and paintings from artists such as Claude Monet and Eugène Carrière inspired his work. However, Carrière's Sick Child, 1885 would be a pivoting point in influencing his own painting of the same name. One of Munch's first work that showed his notorious style can be seen in The Sick Child, 1886 painting just a year after Carrière's. His painting depicts his sister Sophie bedridden from Tuberculosis and his mother mourning beside her waiting for her to pass. He paints in a very melancholy tone and the color gives the viewer the impression of sickness and sorrow. He expresses his feelings years later describing how "'few have ever experienced the full grief of their subject as I did in The Sick Child.'"(qtd. in Prideaux 85–86). Munch's painterly style allows us to feel the anguish and pain he must have felt while painting The Sick Child. His process is also rather significant compared to the end product itself and provides clear insight into his emotional state whilst he painted. Munch not only painted with a brush but he chose to also use a palette knife for this particular painting to show the marks of visible misery, which can be seen with the scratchy and unfinished texture. What is even more interesting is his use of layers. His determination in layering his painting over and over for a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Edvard Munch was quoted as saying "We want more than a mere photograph of nature. We do not want to paint pretty pictures to be hung on drawing–room walls. We want to create, or at least lay the foundations of, an art that gives something to humanity. An art that arrests and engages. An art created of one's innermost heart." Tuberculosis entered his childhood bring him horrid visions of death, pain, paranoia, and despair. It was with these emotions Munch eventually, in 1893, brought to the canvas of The Scream. He tried to create the all encompassing emotion of total complete undeniable despair. When all hope is gone; when death is eventual; when the world seems to be completely aganist you and there is nothing you can do about any of it. The Scream displays the despair of life as he had experienced one day while walking with his friends. As he has written himself "I was walking along the road with two friends. The sun set. I felt a tinge of melancholy. Suddenly the sky became a bloody red. I stopped, leaned aganist the railing, dead tired, and I looked at the flaming clouds that hung like blood and a sword over the blue–black fjord and the city. My friends walked on. Written in what looked like charcoal was a bunch of people's torsos and heads. There was blood all over the bed and the client was under the bed literally deflated. No bones, blood, organs, just the skin and eyeballs. I had immediately ran back out and got a guard and when we came back to the room the body was gone. One of the drawings had a great big x across it written in more blood. Freaking out, we had called the cops and shut and locked every door. Two weeks had passed the police force couldn't figure out who had killed the man, especially since there was no body to work with. Going back into the crime scene I counted all the people on the wall. The same amount on the wall was the same amount of clients we had plus one. Just then I heard a high pitched scream and watched a great big x appear in blood on a charcoaled person. I knew immediately what had happened. Racing toward the scream looking through the rooms I saw something that will haunt my dreams forever. A client was throwing up all her own blood, organs, and bones with a shadowy figure behind her holding a bottle. Right after I burst into her room the lights flickered off into a complete darkness. I was pushed down and a drop acid green liquid landed on my shoulder and burned me. It hurt so bad that it had knocked me out cold. When I had awaken I was on the couch in my boss's office. His sword was sheathed and on his hip as he pushed aside bushes and low hanging branches. "Blasted nettles" he cursed as he pushed through a bush, relying on his steel armor to protect him. "Why do they even send us on patrol anyway?" He rambled to himself "Every evil thing that crawls, walks, slithers, swims or flies on this planet has been quiet."
