While reading Mary Pipher's, "Reviving Ophelia: Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls" and Dan Kindlon and Michael Thompson's, "Raising Cain:
Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys," I got a better understanding of the mindsets of teenagers in todays society. I learned that countless girls and
boys have the same inner battles and do not even realize it. The two songs I chose that best represent ideas of woman and manhood are "Unpretty," by
TLC and "Stan," by Eminem. I believe these songs support many of the stereotypes portrayed in both of the class readings and hold strong messages
that can impact the views of girls and boys alike. They address many struggles that teenagers today may be going through but afraid of speaking about
openly.
In Reviving Ophelia, Pipher takes us into the minds of teenage girls and evaluates the ordinary troubles they encounter. She explains how girls tend to
let the opinions of others influence their interests and appearance. They visualize how others perceive them and based on this, they form a
self–perception. This perception can either be a positive or negative one. Generally if a girl establishes a negative self–perception, they have an urge to
alter whom they are to gain approval. They crave acceptance from others so much that they usually through great lengths to get it. The problem is that

The artist who I will be focusing on for this assignment is Eminem. I find him interesting because he became really famous around 27 (my current age)
just before the new millennium but is still considered highly popular, relevant and on top of the hip–hop world. His albums consistently go
multi–platinum, even though some were panned by critics and fans alike. I find him to be an interesting story from what I have heard in general. His
personality, drug use, controversies, near–death, and his continued relevance as an artist that appears to value youth into his forties are all points of
interest. Although in today's society, he is viewed as mainstream and widely accepted it wasn't always that way. As a white/Caucasian artist in a
predominately black music culture in the 1990's (Allison, 2002), and following the exposure of Vanilla Ices street life as little more than fabrications
and lies, people were always quick to embrace his music. Early radio interviews that Eminem did with radio DJ's often questioned his legitimacy as a
rapper and his upbringing (Molden, 2005), and with some even going as far as to straight up say he was "acting black". He was apparently often

In the past couple of years I have taken my old poetry books, in diary form with lock and key out of the closet and back to my desk. A relatively new
form of presentation of poetry called Spoken Word has emerged and taken over the media. Spoken word is defined has a form of poetry intended for
an on stage performance yet initially written on paper (Nelson–Atkins.com).The difference between a rap song and a spoken word poem is
presentation. A rap song is more of a story and a spoken word presentation can be more of a lesson. Basically a rap song is a sonnet and spoken
word is free verse. Since the difference is so slight, why do people view rap music and spoken word so whole heartedly different? Should we view
the message of poem or song differently based on the presentation? After a lot of thought and research rap is essentially poetry. (In the Heart of the
