Alcohol Articles On Alcohol And Alcohol
Alcohol articles (CT–1) above alcohol article said about how alcohol made up of and it's effect.
How people become addict with it. Why people using alcohol and how it affects our community.
(CT–2) In my opinion I believe the authors of the article were saying that due to the misuse of
alcohol teenagers, high school student and college students were dying a lots due to car accident.
Author try to said that if reader is alcohol abuse than they should their habits and try to help people
who have alcohol abuse common problems. Again, author try to say people do not make children
alcoholic because if parents or relative are alcoholic or alcohol abuse automatically children will
become alcoholic. (CT–3) before reading this article on alcohol I used to think alcohol is bad to
health and person who are alcoholic they are too bad people. I will never test this alcohol. (CT–4)
after reading this article than also my reaction was same to alcoholic people but I will try to help
them in their reason to become alcoholic because some people used alcohol to become tension free.
(CT–5) in my opinion I made conclusions that people who used and abuse alcohol please do not
make your friends and family as like you and be careful and anything happen by reason and it have
both negative and positive reason. (QL–1) in General graph tells me about which age group people
are more alcoholic and how many of them are not currently using, how much

Alcohol : Alcohol And Alcohol Essay
Our first topic for class is alcohol. Alcohol is defined as "Chemically, a compound characterized by
the presence of a hydroxyl group; in common usage, a beverage made from fermented fruits,
vegetables, or grains and containing ethanol." (From the book pg GL–1) Ethanol is defined as "A
specific alcohol compound (C2H5OH) formed from the fermentation of dietary carbohydrates and
used in a variety of alcoholic beverages." (From the book pg GL–4) Definition of proof is "A
measure of the alcohol content of a liquid; 100–proof liquor is 50% alcohol by volume; 80–proof
liquor is 40% alcohol by volume and so on." (From the book pg GL–11)Alcohol is metabolized by
few ways, which involves two enzymes. They are alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and aldehyde
dehydrogenase (ALDH). First, ADH metabolizes alcohol to acetaldehyde, a highly toxic substance
and known carcinogen. Then, acetaldehyde is further metabolized down to byproduct called acetate.
Which then is broken down into water and carbon dioxide.
Alcohol abuse is defined as "A pattern of alcohol consumption, whether chronic or occasional, that
results in harm to one's health, functioning, or interpersonal relationships." (From the book pg 280)
Alcohol abuse can lead to alcoholism, which is being addicted to alcohol. Alcoholism then leads to
brain, liver, organ damage, vehicle accidents, traumatic injuries and even death. Definition of binge
drinking is "The consumption of five or more alcoholic drinks on one occasion by a man or

Naming Alcohols in Chemistry
In chemistry, an alcohol is in the hydroxyl functional group (–OH) is bound to a carbon atom. In
particular, this carbon center should be saturated, having single bonds to three other atoms.
Important alcohols are the simple acyclic alcohols. Of those, ethanol (C2H5OH) is the type of
alcohol found in alcoholic beverages, and in common speech the word alcohol refers specifically to
ethanol. When it comes to alcohol reactions the functional group of the alcohols is the hydroxyl
group –OH. Unlike the alkyl halides, this group has two reactive covalent bonds, the C–O bond and
the O–H bond. The electronegativity of oxygen is greater than carbon and hydrogen. The covalent
bonds of this functional group are polarized so that oxygen is electron ... Show more content on

In the monohydric alcohol group there is Methanol (wood alcohol), ethanol (alcohol), isopropyl
alcohol (rubbing alcohol), Butyl alcohol (butanol), pentanol (amyl alcohol), and hexadecan–1–ol
(cetyl alcohol). Another group of alcohols would be the polyhydric alcohols. With these alcohols
there are ethane 1,2–diol (ethylene glycol), propane 1,2–diol (propylene glycol), Propane–1,2,3–
triol (glycerol), Butane–1,2,3,4–tetraol (Erythritol, Threitol), Pentane–1,2,3,4,5–pentol (xylitol),
Hexane–1,2,3,4,5,6–hexol (Mannitol, Sorbitol), Heptane–1,2,3,4,5,6,7–heptol (volemitol). Another
group of alcohols would be the unsaturated aliphatic alcohols. In this group would be Prop–2–ene–
1–ol (allyl alcohol), 3, 7–Dimethylocta–2, 6–dien–1–ol (geraniol), and Prop–2–in–1–ol (Propargyl
alcohol). The last group of the alcohols would be alicyclic alcohols. In this group there is
Cyclohexane–1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6–hexol (inositol) and 2 – (2–propyl)–5–methyl–cyclohexane–1–ol
(menthol) (Britannica). The names above are just a list of some of the alcohols that can be found
within the big range and different types of alcohols. The alcohols above use the same formats as
alkanes to be named. When it comes to alcohols and naming them they will end with the letters –ol
at the end of the name, which means that they are alcohols. When it comes to alcohol reactions the

Alcohol In The Depressant Family
When does drinking to much alcohol turn into a disorder? How can one identify the symptoms of
alcoholism? When a person begins to drink alcohol excessively, in large quantities, and numerous
times a week, it is a good sign that an alcohol substance use disorder is beginning. "Alcohol is a
legal drug, but one that carries a significant risk of addiction" (AAC, 2018, para. 1). Alcohol is in
the depressant family with the following symptoms: quickly absorbed into the bloodstream affecting
the central nervous system, depression, poor coordination, more talkative, slows down sound
judgment, slows reaction time, blurred vision, and impaired thinking/memory.
Many times, a person begins drinking socially, however, in a person with a substance use disorder

Absorption
Alcohol is absorbed from all parts of the gastrointestinal tract largely by simple diffusion into the
blood. However the small intestine is by far the most efficient region of the gastrointestinal tract for
alcohol absorption because of its very large surface area. In a fasting individual, it is generally
agreed that 10% to 20% of a dose of alcohol is absorbed from the stomach (the volume of alcohol
affects the absorption) and 75% to 80% is absorbed from the small ... Show more content on

It 's not how many drinks that you have, but how much alcohol that you consume. The concentration
of the drinks that one ingest can have a slight effect on the peak alcohol concentration due to the
differences in absorption rate of different concentrations of alcohol. Alcohol is most rapidly
absorbed when the concentration of the drink is between 10% and 30%. Below 10% the
concentration gradient in the gastrointestinal tract is low and slows absorption and the added
volumes of liquid involved slow gastric emptying. On the other hand concentrations higher than
30% tend to irritate the mucous membranes of the gastrointestinal tract and the pyloric sphincter,
causing increased secretion of mucous and delayed gastric emptying.
Food
Food taken along with alcohol results in a lower, delayed blood alcohol concentration peak (the
point of greatest intoxication). There are two major factors involved in this phenomenon.
First, because alcohol is absorbed most efficiently in the small intestine, the ingestion of food can
slow down the absorption of alcohol into one 's system. The pyloric valve at the bottom of the
stomach will close in order to hold food in the stomach for digestion and thus keep the alcohol from
reaching the small intestine.

Alcohol or Marijuana: Is One More Dangerous Than The Other?
Tell me, if somebody asked you whether you believed marijuana or alcohol was the more harmful
substance, how would you respond? It's certainly a hot topic that has been debated amongst society
for decades, but one has to wonder, why is one of these substances legal, while the other remains an
illegal substance? In various cultures around the world, drinking alcohol has become a normalized
activity, with many seeing getting intoxicated as a rite of passage into our adolescent years or as a
celebration of reaching the legal drinking age. On the other hand, many individuals still view
marijuana in a negative light, so what exactly makes the two different? Both substances are

Services that estimates that between twenty–five and thirty–percent of violent crimes and around
three to four percent of property damage related crimes are linked to the intake of alcohol, with U.S.
Department of Justice reporting "nearly 5,000,000 alcohol–related crimes occur each year (Para

directly linked to violent crimes or behavior, and instead has been linked to more mellow and
passive behavior after use. Furthermore, the organization also continues appealing to the readers'
emotions and sense of justice by continuing to show what violent and harmful situations that alcohol
has actually been linked to, such as in cases of male–to–female violence, studies have shown the
odds of severe abuse taking place were found to be eleven times higher when the abuser had been

Alcohol Abuse and Alcohol Anonimus Essay
Alcohol Abuse is part of disorder that affects many people throughout the world. Many are aware of
the issues the disorder can bring not just on the victim, but also to the people that surround the
person with the psychological problem. There are different areas that can be discussed in regards to
alcoholism. According to Coon & Mitterer (2013), a substance abuse disorder is when there is an
abuse or dependence on a psychoactive drug. Alcohol is a substance that can become abusive and
bring negative effects on a person's body. Alcohol is a substance that can bring behavioral effects
such as behavioral effects, physical changes, and social changes. A good solution to Alcohol abuse
can be Alcohol anonymous, an organization that helps ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Teenagers will change their friends and hang out with others that are going through similar
experiences or worse. Adults might change the way they treat their loved ones because of the
behavioral effects of using drugs. According to Mental Health.gov (2014), social life changes
involve a change in friends and hobbies, a need for money for an unexplained reason, relationship
and legal problems. There are many more problems that can be added or included in to those
categories and affect people. The experience of having a loved one experiencing social issues can
impact the family and friends. A job may no longer be kept because of the work related issues that
may arise between coworkers. A son may no longer spend time at home and instead opt to hang out
with others that are abusing substances as well. Parents can separate and affect their children future
because they cannot behave in the home environment.
Alcohol is very dangerous and many will still continue to consume it but there are several ways to
cope with abuse. Alcohol anonymous is a well–known organization that can help men and women
who are struggling to quit or are tired of the effects that the substance abuse has caused them.
According to Alcoholic anonymous (2014), the organization was started in 1935 by a New York
stockbroker and an Ohio surgeon that had drinking issues. Alcohol anonymous is found in the

The Reaction Of The Alcohols
The alcohols 1–propanol and 2–pentanol were converted into alkyl halides through a certain series
of steps. The first step was reflux, and the purpose of reflux is to add energy to the solution and not
lose any solution to evaporation. This energy helps initiate the acid–catalyzed dehydration reaction
and also promotes rearrangement. The next step was distillation, which functioned to separate
liquids based on boiling points. The distillation utilizes boiling points to separate the alkyl halide
products from many impurities that might exist. Reflux is the first step instead of distillation
because refluxing allows the reaction to progress. If distillation was performed first, separation
would begin before the reaction was allowed time to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, since the voltage adapter connected to the sand bath may not have been working
properly, inconsistent heating patterns could have proposed a problem during reflux. Also, a few
extra drops of water may have invaded the product while the flask was cooling in the ice bath during
distillation. Furthermore, it is possible that not all of the organic layer was drained out of the
separatory funnel during separation, and maybe the drying agent was not allowed enough time to
remove all of the water. Errors will always hinder the success of a reaction, which will greatly effect
the percent yield.
Infrared spectroscopy (IR) is a very useful tool that can read a molecule's functional groups from a
small sample. By monitoring the disappearance and appearance of certain groups, it is possible to
confirm wether compounds have formed. In this experiment, for example, the reactants are alcohols,
whose IRs will show a large and broad absorption around 3500 cm–1. These hydroxide groups are
eventually replaced during the reactions, and the final products will not contain any hydroxides.
Therefore, the IR of the products will not show the large and broad hydroxide absorption.
Monitoring the disappearance of the hydroxide stretch will allow the reaction progression to be
monitored also. The complete disappearance of this stretch will confirm that a new product has been
formed. However, IR

Alcohol At Sporting Events And Alcohol
In today's society, sporting events and alcohol are intertwined. Social drinking has always been a
part of the sporting spectrum, whether at a tailgate party, sports bar, professional stadium or arena,
and even at home. Collegiate sporting events are no exception to this popular pastime. However,
alcohol is not available at every NCAA sporting event. According to Mitchell (2015), only 25% of
FBS colleges allow the sale of alcohol at sporting events. Obviously, the main concern for not
allowing alcohol at sporting events is the risk of underage drinking, binge drinking, and rowdiness
among students and fans. Despite this setback, many colleges are allowing the sales of alcohol in
order to decrease the economic burden many colleges are facing. Several colleges such as the
University of Maryland and the University of Memphis have recently started implementing the sales
of alcohol for this reason. Not only is sales the main revenue stream for selling alcohol, but also
sponsorship from the alcohol companies themselves. The idea of extra revenue may sound great for
many collegiate athletic departments, but there are legal risks to take into full consideration. In a
hypothetical situation where Dr. Mark Emmert resigns as president of the NCAA, the first priority
that should be implemented by the new president should be the acceptance of alcohol sales at
collegiate sporting events, specifically championship events. When looking at the NCAA as a
whole, the biggest setback that most

The Effects Of Alcohol On Alcohol Consumption
Throughout the years, there have been massive debates and arguments whether or not alcohol
should be prohibited. In most countries, at a certain age, adults are allowed to purchase alcohol
without being limited to certain choices. However, with the rise of alcoholic products, there are
concerns for public health and safety. Many people argue that restrictions should be placed on
alcohol consumption. To begin with, there are several factors that involve in alcohol consumption.
Studies have shown that there is a direct correlation between alcohol consumption and crime. As
alcohol intake increases, crime increases as well. In fact, it has been found that the more violent a
crime is, the greater the likelihood that alcohol has been involved. Researchers have found that
adults who were convicted at the time were either drinking or under the influence. However, there is
not enough evidence that drinking alcohol necessarily causes a person to commit to a crime.
Additional factors, such as sleep deprivation, psychological disorders, and physical conditions, may
play an important role. Furthermore, rates of violent behavior and use of alcohol and other drugs are
higher in adolescent boys than adolescent girls ("American Journal of Public Health"). Alcohol
affects the cognitive part of the brain, leading to inappropriate behaviors, causing criminal acts. In
addition, alcohol is a factor in 40% of all violent crimes today ("Alcohol and Crime"). Because of
this factor, people should

Should Alcohol Be An Addiction?
When it comes to the topic of alcohol, most of us will readily agree that yes it is an addiction.
Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of no alcohol is not an addiction.
Whereas some are convinced that yes it is, others maintain that no it is not. Anyone can be addicted
to alcohol, but alcohol is not in and of itself an addiction. The capacity of absorbing alcohol in
tremendous amounts can occur over weeks or years, which can lead the individual not to have an
addiction to alcohol. Many will ask the question of can excessive use of alcohol become an
addiction? No, alcohol cannot be an addiction, some would contest consumption that consuming
alcohol is for mere fun. Others still maintain the fact that the addiction is more of a destructive
behavior because that is what occurred in their confusion. They argue, in fact, there is no major
result of alcohol other than the fact an individual becomes drunk to cover up pain that doesn't lead
the person to become an addict. Another question asked, could alcohol lead to having other
addictions? No, Scientists have discovered points of alcohol addictions and whether or not it is even
an addiction but more of a disease. In all actuality, these scientists retain of alcoholism is more
heredity rather than an addiction, since they look at it as a "neuroanatomical" this focuses on the
individuals affects of emotions of happiness or melancholy. Researchers indicate the basics of what

These adolescent children tend to drink to cope with their emotions or for other reasons. According
to Santrock, J. W. (2016), adolescents transition from school (may it be from middle school to high

Alcohol Summary
* Executive Summary
In 2001 spirit makers ended a long standing volunteer policy against aggressive alcohol advertising
(Steiner and Steiner, 2009). Since that time, there has been an unprecedented shift toward increased
alcoholic advertisements in an effort to increase market share and raise profits. This shift brings into
light the challenge alcoholic companies face in balancing their fiduciary duties to their shareholders
and their corporate and social responsibility to society.
This report focuses on the issues surrounding Anheuser Busch's Spykes beverage and the corporate
and social issues similarly faced by other alcoholic beverage companies.

From society's perspective, any activities conducted by the alcohol beverage companies to remove
alcohol related problems like violence, decreased morality and intoxication related problems like
drinking driving are seldom advertised and marketed. In this sense, society is only seeing
advertisements related to increased consumption leading to increased profits. Accordingly alcohol
industries fail to fulfill their ethical duty to be informative and truthful in their advertising efforts.
At present, alcohol beverage companies create a brand image by sponsoring sports and cultural
activities that attract drinkers, first starting as a social drinker and then becoming regular drinkers
(Munro & De Wever, 2008). The current alcohol advertising regulatory system in Australia
should aim to minimize exposure and appeal to children (VAADA, 2010).
In Australia, advertising activities are regulated by legislation and a code of practice such as the
Advertiser Code of Ethics and Alcoholic Beverages Advertising Code (ABAC). This code is based
on a voluntary system of self–regulation which is funded and administered by the alcohol beverage
companies. Currently there are no penalties for non–compliance (Jones, Hall & Munro 2008).
Additionally, the organisation is partly funded by alcoholic beverage companies. This presents a
conflict of interest as in most instances, their fiduciary duties are act in the best interests of

What is More Dangerous, Marijuana or Alcohol?
In recent times, marijuana has slowly become less and less of a taboo subject. The gradual
legalization has made marijuana a hot topic, both for its recreational uses and medicinal properties.
The biggest questions that remain are, is it dangerous and is it more dangerous than alcohol? Given
the length of time that alcohol has been legal most people would assume that it is the safer option,
but is that true?
Risk from Alcohol
While alcohol may be readily available to anyone over the age of 21, it still comes with risk both to
your judgment and health. According to the CDC, excessive alcohol consumption leads to around
88,000 deaths annually. Alcohol consumption comes with both long–term and short–term effects on
a person, such as:
Impairment of judgment leading to injuries from motor vehicle accidents, drowning, falls and
physical instability.
People who are under the influence of alcohol may become violent, which has led to murder, assault
and sexual assault.

Alcohol And Its Effects On Alcohol
Abstract
Alcohol has long been a subject of controversy. Long before man understood the indications and
contraindications of alcohol there has been laws against this drug. Classifying alcohol as a drug may
not be suited for a majority of the population because people like to partake in drinking. Imbibing in
alcohol is a tradition in many parts of the country. We use alcohol for celebrations, traditions,
socialization and combining food flavors with specific alcohols. Forgetting that too much can lead
to many issues and problems like alcoholism, liver disease and contraindications with other
medications. Alcohol was extremely detrimental to the native Americans of this land.
Keywords: alcohol, tradition, addiction, indications, contraindications, liver disease, native
Americans.
Alcohol Abuse and its Indications
Alcohol has been around for many centuries, involving tradition, religion, and social gatherings. For
many using alcohol is not a problem because they fall into the categories listed above. In some
churches, the use of wine is used to represent the blood of Christ, although many have turned to
grape juice now. Others use alcohol as a custom for watching football or perhaps traditionally within
some cultures like the Irish, who drink daily for continued health. And lastly, social gatherings are
also an excuse to 'drink up' and celebrate any event in one's life. What most people fail to realize is
that drinking can lead to health issues and dependence.

Alcohol Benefits And Harmfulness : Alcohol
Alcohol Benefits and Harmfulness
According to one of the BBC news, "A car travelling at high speed driven by a suspected drunk
driver has crashed into a crowd of spectators during a university parade in the US state of
Oklahoma, killing four people and injuring 44 others, police say." Drunk driving is that the driver
operated a motor vehicle unconsciously on account of excessive ethanol intake and it's easily to
cause an accident. Hence, as a growing number of adults have involved in severely drunk driven
accidents and resulting in injuries and deaths, whether the government should release a series of
more stringent alcohol rule or not, has sparked a lot debate. Indeed, due to the highly potential risk
of alcohol, the rules of the alcohol have to play an important role to social safety.
Refer to the history of alcohol, it did experience the affirmation and the denial through a long
period. In the sixteenth century, alcohol, called "spirits", was used largely for medicinal purposes. At
the beginning of the eighteenth century, the British parliament passed a law, which encouraging the
use of grain for distilling spirits. Cheap spirits flooded the market and reached a peak in the mid–
eighteenth century. In nineteenth century, a change in attitudes and the temperance movement began
promoting the moderate use of alcohol, which ultimately became a push for total prohibition. In

In Australia and throughout other western countries, the misuse of alcohol by young people has been
highlighted as a problem (Toumbourou et al 2003).
Alcohol misuse amongst adolescents
For many Australians, alcohol consumption is a pleasurable part of everyday life (Parliament of
Victoria 2004). However in recent years there have been several reports highlighting that the
proportion of adolescents consuming alcohol and the amount of alcohol they are drinking is at
record levels (AIHW 2008; White and Hayman 2006; Shanahan and Hewitt 1999). The long and
short term sequelae associated with risky or high risk alcohol consumption include negative
physical, emotional and social consequences (NHMRC 2001). Immediate harms include accidents,
injuries, decreased scholastic and sporting performance, aggression, violence, assault, disrupted
family relationships, high risk sexual activity, driving while under the influence of alcohol and
delinquent behaviour (Jones and Donovan 2001). Among young people aged 16 to 24 years, alcohol
related harm is one of the leading causes of disease and injury burden (AIHW 2006). These findings
are consistent with population based research in Europe, United States and Canada (Jernigan 2001).
Community concern has been reflected in Australian media reports about 'teenage binge drinking'
and the associated harms and generated debate in the Australian media about raising the legal age of
alcohol consumption from 18 to 21 years (Editor 2008;

Alcohol Is A Popular Ingredient
In today's society, alcohol is a popular ingredient in numerous products and beverages. And for
better or worse, alcohol has shaped our civilization for many centuries. Alcohol is any organic
compound, which the hydroxyl functional group is bound to a saturated carbon atom. It is classed as
a depressant, which is an ingredient that slows down vital functions resulting in slurred speech,
unsteady movement, disturbed perceptions and an inability to react quickly. As for how it affects the
mind, alcohol is best understood as a drug that reduces a person's ability to think rationally and
distorts our judgment. The term alcohol is originally referred to the primary alcohol ethyl alcohol,
the predominant alcohol in alcoholic beverages. Ethanol is thought to cause harm partly as a result
of direct damage to DNA caused by its metabolites. Alcohol is absorbed into the bloodstream via
small blood vessels in the walls of the stomach and small intestine. Within minutes of drinking
alcohol, it travels from the stomach to the brain, where it quickly produces its effects, slowing the
action of nerve cells. Some people should not drink at all, including alcoholics, children, pregnant
women, people taking certain medicines, and people with certain medical conditions. Anything
more than moderate drinking can be risky. Heavy drinking can lead to alcoholism and alcohol
abuse, as well as injuries, liver disease, heart disease, cancer, and other health problems. It can also

Alcohol Alcoholism And Alcohol Abuse Essay
Alcoholism and alcohol abuse are different, although they have several connected characteristics,
including genetics, how you were raised, social environment, and emotional health. Some of the
following are indicators of alcohol abuse e.g., craving alcohol, having tried to quit in the past, but
could not, spending longer time drinking than you expected, or continuing to drink even though it
causes trouble with family or friends. An alcoholic is someone who has no control over alcohol and
is unable to live a normal or healthy life; consequently, it causes a psychological and physical
dependence upon alcohol. Alcoholics typically experience physical withdrawals when not drinking.
Both disorders have a significant attribute for risky behavior e.g., drinking and driving or unsafe
sex. Alcohol distresses all parts of the body, particularly the brain, pancreas, liver, and heart.
Hereditary factors attribute to whether the individual has a propensity towards alcohol abuse, while
studies indicate that there is a greater risk factor if there is a family history of substance abuse.
Lineages can transport a gene that makes individuals more susceptible to becoming an alcoholic.
This is only part of the calculation; the other takes account our environment "Our hereditary
behaviors interact with our environment to form the basis of our decisions."

Alcohol Expectancy Theory
The purpose of this study is to investigate undergraduates expectancies of consuming alcohol on its
own and consuming alcohol combined with energy drinks. An individual's beliefs regarding what
will happen as a result of consuming alcohol are referred to as "Alcohol Expectancies" (Brown,
Goldman, Inn, & Anderson, 1980). These are often tested on an scale called the Anticipated Effects
of Alcohol Scale (AEAS) assessing individuals against criterion which varied in positive and
negative valence and low and high arousal (Morean, Corbin, & Treat, 2012). Prior to this scale, the
alcohol expectancy theory concluded that individuals are more at risk of excessive alcohol

Whilst Verster, Benson, and Scholey (2014) found that there were no relevant differences between
motivation behind AmED consumption and other nonalcoholic mixers in a study of 2329
Norwegian students, most studies have found that there were varying motivational factors as to why
individuals consumed alcohol mixed with energy drinks. For example, Marczinski, Fillmore,
Henges, Ramsay, & Young, (2013) found an association between individuals wanting to drink more
and their AmED consumption. Supporting these findings, another study showed that individuals
often believe that consuming AmED's will have more positive outcomes, such as reducing alcohol
intoxication, although the results showed that the consumption of AmED's actually led to increased
negative outcomes (Droste et al., 2014). Alternatively AmED's being used to aid intoxication was
also reported (Cobb et al., 2013; MacKillop et al., 2012; Peacock et al., 2013a; Pennay and Lubman,
2012). Furthermore, another study concluded that an individual's propensity to consume alcohol
mixed with energy drinks were due to a combination of motivational factors; expectancies, beliefs,
social interactions, and attitudes (Varvil–Weld et al.,

The Effects Of Alcohol On Alcohol Abuse Essay
Dependance on alcohol has been around ever since its creation and records of writing existed. From
Biblical commandments clearly restricting the drink due to its destructive and addictive nature to the
celebrities on tv screens and music devices glorifying the substance, alcohol has always been part of
various cultures. Being the number one drug problem in the U.S with over 12 million people
reportedly being alcoholics and of those 7 million being binge drinkers between the ages 12–20, it
comes as no surprise that beneath its shiny and glamorous exterior, this drink comes with its set of
problems ("Alcohol Abuse Statistics."). In American society today many people think that being an
alcoholic simply stems from laziness and the lack of will to "simply stop." There is much more to
this disorder than having one too many drinks at a bar that people are either ignorant to or just
ignore for the sake of judging other individuals. Just like famous English philosopher,William Penn,
said: "All excess is ill, but drunkenness is of the worst sort. It spoils health, dismounts the mind, and
unmans men. It reveals secrets, is quarrelsome, lascivious, impudent, dangerous and mad."(
"Alcoholism Quotes."). So with all these consequences associated with alcohol, why do people
drink? What is alcoholism? Who does it affect? Why does it happen? How can it be solved?

Legalization Of Alcohol
The Legalization of Alcohol throughout the U.S. has been a social injustice issue in today's society.
Some issues throughout the time is that when people drink, their minds don't cooperate with their

Another issue surrounded with legalizing Alcohol is the drinking age limit. Currently the legal
drinking age for beer and wine is 18 and liquor is 21 for the U.S. Simply that has a huge effect and a
big impact on underage drinkers. According to the 11 Facts About Teens and
Alcohol. In 2012, nearly 72% of students have consumed alcohol by the end of high school, and
more than 37% have done so towards the end of 8th grade. Underage drinkers account for 12% of
all of the alcohol consumed in the U.S. The average age teen boys first try alcohol is age 11, for teen
girls it's 13. Nearly 10 million young people, ages 12 to 20, reported that they've consumed alcohol
in the past 30 days. Teens who start drinking before age 15 years are 5 times more likely to develop
alcohol dependence or abuse later in life than those who begin drinking at or after the legal age of
21. In 2010, there were approximately 200,000 emergency rooms visits by teens under age 21 for
injuries and other conditions linked to alcohol. Teens who drink heavily are three times more likely
to try and hurt themselves than those who don't drink. The worst part when underage drinking are

Alcohol Advertising
Millions of Americans suffers from the effects of alcohol and drug abuse. It can shatter lives, brake
families, and to rob people of their dreams for the future. Once alcoholism or drug addiction begins,
an individual's problems not only don't go away, but their mental well being as well as physical
ability continues to diminish from the immediate and long–term adverse effects from the drugs and
alcohol abuse. Is it really true that advertising increases alcohol consumption, which increases
alcohol abuse? No it is not. No solid evidence from either scientific research or practical experience
that this theory of advertising is correct was identified. The United States Department of Health and

This is how young people view them. If one treats beverage alcohol as a dangerous substance to be
avoided and not even advertised, he or she inadvertently can raise it up from the ordinary into the
range of the powerful, the tantalizing, and the desirable Big Deal. (Hanson, 1997). In so doing, we
slip into the familiar, failed pattern of demonizing the substance of alcohol rather than discouraging
irresponsible behavior.
Alcohol addiction is a very serious and life threatening illness. Everything can get ruined in one's
life. The life cycle of alcohol addiction begins with a problem, discomfort or some for of emotional
or physical pain a person is experiencing and becomes difficult to deal with. At some point alcohol
or drug enters the picture and provides a temporary, synthetic relief, and for a moment it seems to
act as a solution to the problem. Alcohol addiction can be overcome and the individual can return to
leading a happy, healthy, productive and responsible life once again. Often people drink during
social occasions; it tends to loosen inhibitors.
Unfortunately, the recklessness often is the result of excessive drinking and is a leading cause of
serious injuries and accidental deaths. In addition, alcohol is the most common cause of preventable
birth defects that include fatal alcohol syndrome. The effects of alcohol abuse can be short term and
long term. Short– term effects of alcohol use include: altered

The Effects Of Alcohol Abuse On Alcohol
When I step into a college party, the first thing I see around me is alcohol. I often notice underage
adolescents drinking and I also distinguish how they become different people when intoxicated by
alcohol. They begin to walk funny and they tend to slur their words, making it hard to comprehend
anything they are saying. I have watched family members who were so inebriated that they could
not even spell their own name or even pinpoint who they were. The questions I always ask myself
when I see these drunk college kids is "Do these kids know the effects of alcoholism?" Kids are
often abusing alcohol, but do not really understand the effects it may have on their life. When
overwhelming their bodies with alcohol, they should ask themselves "What causes me to drink so
much? What are the outcomes of me abusing alcohol? What can alcohol abuse lead to?" Plenty of
people always seem to ask "what are the causes of alcohol abuse?" As a matter of fact, there are
many origins that come to mind when actually thinking of why people drink alcohol excessively.
Alcohol abuse can run in a person's family, or sometimes it may be caused by the environment a
person is in or if someone is taking on stress (WebMD). When people are frazzled or feel as though
they are facing a serious issue within their life, they tend to feel the need to turn towards drinking
alcohol so that they can get rid of all the pain they are feeling. Some people treat alcohol as an

Alcohol Abuse And Alcohol Use Disorder Essay
Alcohol Use Disorder, most commonly known as Alcohol Abuse or Alcohol Dependence, is widely
known as problem that occurs with individuals who consumes an enormous amount of alcohol on a
regular basis often in a single use. The individual is consumed with the thought of drinking most of
the time and often feel as though they need it to continue with living their daily lives, even though,
they are not really living at all because the enormous amount of alcohol causes a dysfunction for
their daily tasks. It inhibits their ability to take care of their family, have social relationships and
performing activities at work. It is believed that genetics can play a massive role towards an
individual developing an Alcohol Use Disorder.
According to the DMS–5, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders issued by the
American Psychiatric Association, the Alcohol Use Disorder is defined as "a problematic pattern of
alcohol use leading to clinically significant impairment of distress, as manifested by at least two
symptoms of the eleven in their diagnostic criteria occurring within a 12–month period. These
symptoms demonstrates activities such as, alcohol being often taken in larger amounts over a long
period of time, a persistent desire to cut down or control alcohol use, cravings to use alcohol, a great

Straight Chained Alcohols
Discussion
This experiment set out to investigate the relation between both straight and branch chained alcohols
at various carbon lengths. It was hypothesised that the longest straight chained alcohol would
produce the highest level of enthalpy. It was thought that branched chained molecules would have
weaker attraction forces due to the fact that they couldn't line up in as a close proximity compared to
straight chained alcohols. Resulting in weaker van de waals forces betwixt the branched molecules.
Thus allowing, a weaker force necessary to break the molecule apart for combustion (Salters
advanced chemistry, 2000). This would then make one assume a smaller rate of enthalpy compared
to straight chained alcohols. However, as seen evidently on the graph, the branch chained alcohol
clearly disproved this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To further improve this percentage, it is recommended that insulation techniques be carried out on
top of the copper rod conduction method to improve efficiency. Insulation is important as it further
aids in containing the heat produced from combustion. Further allowing more reliable testing.
Testing the enthalpy for control with just an aluminum can using tert butanol produced a low
efficiency of 16%. While testing again with tert butanol with the copper increased the efficiency by
32.54% above the control. This shows that the insulation/conduction worked. The method of
investigation took into account various variables such as the amount of water, height of retort stand
and so on to further increase the validity of the investigation. The only thing in the method which
would further improve validity would be to create a way in which to stop the flame from burning
right after a five minute testing period per alcohol. This is because valuable grams of alcohol were
burnt whilst the can was lifted out of the shroud, in order to place the cap back

Alcohol Advertising On Alcohol
Alcohol advertising is very common in American culture, and though alcohol sellers may find it
necessary, it comes at a cost. Advertising for alcoholic beverages makes drinking extremely
appealing, causing a lot of underage kids to try alcohol for themselves. Underage drinking will
happen no matter what, but the connection of alcohol to friendship and sex in contrast to the boring
life of a sober business worker makes the problem much worse. Although each advertisement
presented it differently, all 6 alcohol advertisements gave the impression that their product helps to
bring people together. With the exception of "Brother" for Johnnie Walker, the number of people
appearing in each advertisement increases with the amount of time that alcohol is shown. This
creates a very clear connection between alcohol and social interaction, suggesting that drinking
earns you friends. All humans have an innate desire for social interaction, but this desire is strongest
in teens and young adults (Baumeister & Leary, 1995). Alcohol companies effectively use this
desire to sell product to legal drinkers, but this desire draws in minors/illegal drinkers as well. The
contrast in portrayals of friendship and business in these advertisements also appeals to those who
are underage. Once alcohol is introduced into the advertisement, friendship is portrayed as a never
ending party, complete with twinkling lights, bonfires, and carefree laughter. In contrast, an alcohol–
free situation is

Alcohol Issues Alcohol is a drink that has been used differently around the world. Alcohol not only
plays a role in religion in the present, it also plays a role in the past. Alcohol has been made with
honey and juice for thousands of years. There was a type of alcohol that was made in early China
around 7000 B.C. In India, there was alcohol called sura and this was used between 2000 and 3000
B.C. and this beverage was made from condensed rice. Alcohol could also be made from honey
water and this was called mead. The alcohol made from berries and honey came from the Middle
East. Alcohol was used for nutrition, medication, rituals, funerals, and for enjoyment. However,
alcohol use can cause serious problems to occur. Continued alcohol use makes people feel the need
to have more and more alcohol. Alcohol issues occur with college students, high school students,
and adults. Alcohol use is addictive and can lead to dependency and abuse, especially when
consumed by young people like college students and high school students. When teens begin to
transfer in to adulthood they gain independence and they face emotional and physical problems.
There are young people that are already facing health problems because they are drinking too much
at an early age. This is why underage drinking is one of the main reasons teens have health
problems. The drinking age where teens start to drink is normally fourteen. When teens drink

Abstract
Drinking alcohol for a period of time or even binge drinking cause harm your heart. Alcohol
increases the risk for heart attack, strokes, and hypertension. In 2013, a total of 71,713 people died
of liver disease the ages ranged from 12 and older. Alcohol has also been known to affect the
pancreas, large amounts of alcohol can confuse the pancreas causing it to secrete enzymes into the
small intestines, which causes inflammation of the pancreas called Pancreatitis. It is a known fact
that alcohol affects the liver but can also spread to the kidneys. Alcohol puts a strain on the body
which increases the amount of urine the body produces. The kidneys are not able to distribute
sodium, potassium and chloride ions, this also leads to high blood pressure.
Alcohol substance abuse is not only a serious issue for adults, but also for adolescents ranging from
12 to 17 years of age. In 2013, research shows that 2.9 million adolescents consume alcoholic
beverages and 1.6 million are binge drinkers and 293.000 reported to be heavy drinkers. The
National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) have reported that in 2013, an estimated 21.6
million individuals aged 12 or older have a Substance Use Disorder (SUD). Over 76 million people
are currently affected by alcohol use disorders.

The Truth: The Reality of Alcohol's Effect on America
The term alcohol is such a casual term in America. Few people think twice about it. We Americans
think we know everything about it, but do we really? The truth is, alcohol is in fact a drug. It is not
one to take lightly either. Whenever an American sees a couple of guys drinking beers at a bar or a
couple in love having a glass of wine, those people are really just doing drugs and trying to get a
high. But few people see it like that; how it truthfully is. Alcohol has a lot of the same
characteristics and attributes as many illegal drugs that people consider so dire. Alcohol kills people,

Because alcohol is legal and so pervasive, it plays a major role in the world of crime. According to a
recent article, "Alcohol is a factor in 40 percent of all violent crimes today. According to the
Department of Justice, 37 percent of almost two million convicted offenders currently in jail, report
that they were drinking at the time of their arrest." (National Council on Alcoholism and Drug
Dependence) Sadly, alcohol is most frequently correlated with offenses of murder, rape, assault, and
child and spousal abuse. Aside from crime, alcohol takes a heavy toll on the American economy. It
is estimated that the cost of excessive alcohol consumption in the United States totaled about $223.5
billion in 2006 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). This equates to about $1.90 per drink;
meaning that for every drink bought, it is costing taxpayers about $1.90. Further research indicates
that in these $223.5 billion represent loss in workplace productivity, health care expenses, criminal
justice expenses, and motor vehicle crashes. It is now apparent that the effects of alcohol not only
impacts those who are directly affected by crime or physical complications by the drug, but it strikes

that other people do: Drugs and alcohol can make you feel good. But the military lifestyle also may
include other issues that can affect alcohol and drug abuse, such as: The stress of being in armed
conflict or knowing that you may be involved in armed conflict. The stress of being separated from
your spouse and family.

Alcohol use is also higher among men and women in military service than among civilians. Almost
half of active duty service members (47 percent) reported binge drinking in 2008–up from 35
percent in 1998. In 2008, 20 percent of military personnel reported binge drinking every week in the
past month; the rate was considerably higher–27 percent–among those with high combat exposure.
Regarding medical expenditures, studies have found that excessive alcohol use by military members
results in an annual cost of $425 million. Excessive drinking within the military is estimated to
result in a loss of 320,000 work days and 34,400 arrests per year, half of which are for driving under
the influence (Ames, G., and Cunradi, C. Alcohol use and preventing alcohol–related problems
among young adults in the military. Alcohol Research & Health 28:252–257, 2004). Service
members may carry the psychological and physical wounds of their military experience with them
into subsequent civilian life. In one study, one in four veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan
reported symptoms of a mental or cognitive disorder; one in six reported symptoms of post–

Teen's brains mature as they get older so there brain isn't fully developed until they are in their
twenties. This may be the reason for teens engaging in dangerous activities. For fun, teen's like to
experiment with drugs and alcohol. Since teen's brains are still developing, this may be a reason
why teens are able to consume more alcohol before experiencing the effects of drinking alcohol.
Teens may have drinking issues from genetics of family members or from being around people that
drink. This increases the chances of teens being engaged with alcohol. This makes teens experience
drinking problems and drink at an early age. This could also become a problem for kids with

What Is the Appeal of Alcohol?
Alcohol is one of the most abused drugs in the world. Why do people use alcohol in the first place?
Many people do experience a relaxed feeling known as a "buzz," after having alcohol. They only
focus on the pleasurable feeling the alcohol bestows on them. Each person has a different reason for
drinking alcohol. Most people want to have an enjoyable time with others and drink. Others may
drink to escape stress caused by a tough day in the office or being laid off from the company.

Jeff Stevens conducted a study on the effects of alcohol from parent to child and discovered,
"Alcoholism can pass from one generation to the next due to the influence of the environment" (Is
Alcoholism a Disease?). While alcoholism has been proven to not be a genetic disorder, it can be
strongly influenced by the environment and the people in it. "Markus Heilig, director at U.S.
National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and the National Institute on Drug Abuse, said,
'Among alcoholic patients, rates for physical abuse were reported at 24 percent and 33 percent for
men and women'" (Everyday Health). Parents are the role models that are supposed to guide young
children to a successful future. Often children are not raised properly and are abused. Kenneth
Leonard, Ph.D., conducted a study on alcoholic fathers and found, "The alcohol–abusing fathers
were less sensitive in their parenting" (Mental Health). The alcohol tends to lessen the father's
sympathy, so he becomes more aggressive than normal. Physical abuse caused by the father leads to
bruises, cuts, broken bones, or emotional scars. To relieve themselves of the pain, the abused
children will experiment with alcohol. The escape route the abused children take is alcohol because
it takes children to a place where they can be cheerful and away from the abuse. It is a fact that,

Introduction Of A Primary Alcohol
Substitution
5. Introduction In this experiment, a primary alcohol was converted into a primary bromoalkane
using hydrobromic acid. The reaction was done under reflux and then distilled to obtain a product of
higher purity. The degree of the alkyl halide obtained from the experiment was tested with silver
nitrate and sodium iodide. An infrared (IR) spectra and the weight of the product were obtained for
further analysis. The IR gave information on the present functional groups and product weight was
used to calculate the percent yield.
6. Data and Results The product obtained after reflux was a yellow liquid. With the halide tests, the
product reacted faster with sodium iodide to form a precipitate than with silver nitrate. This
indicates that the degree of the product was primary and that bromine did replace the alcohol group.
The IR of the product showed four peaks at 3326.36, 2932.86, 1465.34, and 1028.73. These peaks
indicate O–H, C–H, C–H3, and C–O bonds, respectively, within the product. 2.032 grams of
product were recovered from the reaction. With this, a percent yield of 27.14% was calculated. 7.
Discussion and Conclusion Nucleophilic aliphatic substitution is the replacement of one group for
another at a saturated, sp3–hybridized carbon atom. This process is often used to interconvert
functional groups, such as in the preparation of alkyl halides. In these reactions, nucleophiles attack
the carbon atom–which the electronegative leaving group breaks its bond

  • 2. Alcohol : Alcohol And Alcohol Essay Our first topic for class is alcohol. Alcohol is defined as "Chemically, a compound characterized by the presence of a hydroxyl group; in common usage, a beverage made from fermented fruits, vegetables, or grains and containing ethanol." (From the book pg GL–1) Ethanol is defined as "A specific alcohol compound (C2H5OH) formed from the fermentation of dietary carbohydrates and used in a variety of alcoholic beverages." (From the book pg GL–4) Definition of proof is "A measure of the alcohol content of a liquid; 100–proof liquor is 50% alcohol by volume; 80–proof liquor is 40% alcohol by volume and so on." (From the book pg GL–11)Alcohol is metabolized by few ways, which involves two enzymes. They are alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH). First, ADH metabolizes alcohol to acetaldehyde, a highly toxic substance and known carcinogen. Then, acetaldehyde is further metabolized down to byproduct called acetate. Which then is broken down into water and carbon dioxide. Alcohol abuse is defined as "A pattern of alcohol consumption, whether chronic or occasional, that results in harm to one's health, functioning, or interpersonal relationships." (From the book pg 280) Alcohol abuse can lead to alcoholism, which is being addicted to alcohol. Alcoholism then leads to brain, liver, organ damage, vehicle accidents, traumatic injuries and even death. Definition of binge drinking is "The consumption of five or more alcoholic drinks on one occasion by a man or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Naming Alcohols in Chemistry In chemistry, an alcohol is in the hydroxyl functional group (–OH) is bound to a carbon atom. In particular, this carbon center should be saturated, having single bonds to three other atoms. Important alcohols are the simple acyclic alcohols. Of those, ethanol (C2H5OH) is the type of alcohol found in alcoholic beverages, and in common speech the word alcohol refers specifically to ethanol. When it comes to alcohol reactions the functional group of the alcohols is the hydroxyl group –OH. Unlike the alkyl halides, this group has two reactive covalent bonds, the C–O bond and the O–H bond. The electronegativity of oxygen is greater than carbon and hydrogen. The covalent bonds of this functional group are polarized so that oxygen is electron ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the monohydric alcohol group there is Methanol (wood alcohol), ethanol (alcohol), isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol), Butyl alcohol (butanol), pentanol (amyl alcohol), and hexadecan–1–ol (cetyl alcohol). Another group of alcohols would be the polyhydric alcohols. With these alcohols there are ethane 1,2–diol (ethylene glycol), propane 1,2–diol (propylene glycol), Propane–1,2,3– triol (glycerol), Butane–1,2,3,4–tetraol (Erythritol, Threitol), Pentane–1,2,3,4,5–pentol (xylitol), Hexane–1,2,3,4,5,6–hexol (Mannitol, Sorbitol), Heptane–1,2,3,4,5,6,7–heptol (volemitol). Another group of alcohols would be the unsaturated aliphatic alcohols. In this group would be Prop–2–ene– 1–ol (allyl alcohol), 3, 7–Dimethylocta–2, 6–dien–1–ol (geraniol), and Prop–2–in–1–ol (Propargyl alcohol). The last group of the alcohols would be alicyclic alcohols. In this group there is Cyclohexane–1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6–hexol (inositol) and 2 – (2–propyl)–5–methyl–cyclohexane–1–ol (menthol) (Britannica). The names above are just a list of some of the alcohols that can be found within the big range and different types of alcohols. The alcohols above use the same formats as alkanes to be named. When it comes to alcohols and naming them they will end with the letters –ol at the end of the name, which means that they are alcohols. • 4. Alcohol In The Depressant Family When does drinking to much alcohol turn into a disorder? How can one identify the symptoms of alcoholism? When a person begins to drink alcohol excessively, in large quantities, and numerous times a week, it is a good sign that an alcohol substance use disorder is beginning. "Alcohol is a legal drug, but one that carries a significant risk of addiction" (AAC, 2018, para. 1). Alcohol is in the depressant family with the following symptoms: quickly absorbed into the bloodstream affecting the central nervous system, depression, poor coordination, more talkative, slows down sound judgment, slows reaction time, blurred vision, and impaired thinking/memory. Many times, a person begins drinking socially, however, in a person with a substance use disorder ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Alcohol 0.35 – 0.50 Coma Complete unconsciousness Depressed or abolished reflexes Subnormal body temperature Incontinence Impairment of circulation and respiration Possible death 0.45 + Death Death from respiratory arrest ________________________________________ Absorption Alcohol is absorbed from all parts of the gastrointestinal tract largely by simple diffusion into the blood. However the small intestine is by far the most efficient region of the gastrointestinal tract for alcohol absorption because of its very large surface area. In a fasting individual, it is generally agreed that 10% to 20% of a dose of alcohol is absorbed from the stomach (the volume of alcohol affects the absorption) and 75% to 80% is absorbed from the small ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Alcohol Content It 's not how many drinks that you have, but how much alcohol that you consume. The concentration of the drinks that one ingest can have a slight effect on the peak alcohol concentration due to the differences in absorption rate of different concentrations of alcohol. Alcohol is most rapidly absorbed when the concentration of the drink is between 10% and 30%. Below 10% the concentration gradient in the gastrointestinal tract is low and slows absorption and the added volumes of liquid involved slow gastric emptying. On the other hand concentrations higher than 30% tend to irritate the mucous membranes of the gastrointestinal tract and the pyloric sphincter, causing increased secretion of mucous and delayed gastric emptying. Food Food taken along with alcohol results in a lower, delayed blood alcohol concentration peak (the point of greatest intoxication). There are two major factors involved in this phenomenon. First, because alcohol is absorbed most efficiently in the small intestine, the ingestion of food can slow down the absorption of alcohol into one 's system. The pyloric valve at the bottom of the stomach will close in order to hold food in the stomach for digestion and thus keep the alcohol from reaching the small intestine. ... • 6. Alcohol Vs Alcohol Alcohol or Marijuana: Is One More Dangerous Than The Other? Tell me, if somebody asked you whether you believed marijuana or alcohol was the more harmful substance, how would you respond? It's certainly a hot topic that has been debated amongst society for decades, but one has to wonder, why is one of these substances legal, while the other remains an illegal substance? In various cultures around the world, drinking alcohol has become a normalized activity, with many seeing getting intoxicated as a rite of passage into our adolescent years or as a celebration of reaching the legal drinking age. On the other hand, many individuals still view marijuana in a negative light, so what exactly makes the two different? Both substances are associated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For instance, the author provides data directly from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that estimates that between twenty–five and thirty–percent of violent crimes and around three to four percent of property damage related crimes are linked to the intake of alcohol, with U.S. Department of Justice reporting "nearly 5,000,000 alcohol–related crimes occur each year (Para 14)." On the other hand, the article makes sure to mention that use of marijuana has never been directly linked to violent crimes or behavior, and instead has been linked to more mellow and passive behavior after use. Furthermore, the organization also continues appealing to the readers' emotions and sense of justice by continuing to show what violent and harmful situations that alcohol has actually been linked to, such as in cases of male–to–female violence, studies have shown the odds of severe abuse taking place were found to be eleven times higher when the abuser had been consuming alcohol (Para ... • 7. Alcohol Abuse and Alcohol Anonimus Essay Alcohol Abuse is part of disorder that affects many people throughout the world. Many are aware of the issues the disorder can bring not just on the victim, but also to the people that surround the person with the psychological problem. There are different areas that can be discussed in regards to alcoholism. According to Coon & Mitterer (2013), a substance abuse disorder is when there is an abuse or dependence on a psychoactive drug. Alcohol is a substance that can become abusive and bring negative effects on a person's body. Alcohol is a substance that can bring behavioral effects such as behavioral effects, physical changes, and social changes. Teenagers will change their friends and hang out with others that are going through similar experiences or worse. Adults might change the way they treat their loved ones because of the behavioral effects of using drugs. According to Mental Health.gov (2014), social life changes involve a change in friends and hobbies, a need for money for an unexplained reason, relationship and legal problems. There are many more problems that can be added or included in to those categories and affect people. The experience of having a loved one experiencing social issues can impact the family and friends. A job may no longer be kept because of the work related issues that may arise between coworkers. A son may no longer spend time at home and instead opt to hang out with others that are abusing substances as well. Parents can separate and affect their children future because they cannot behave in the home environment. Alcohol is very dangerous and many will still continue to consume it but there are several ways to cope with abuse. Alcohol anonymous is a well–known organization that can help men and women who are struggling to quit or are tired of the effects that the substance abuse has caused them. • 8. The Reaction Of The Alcohols The alcohols 1–propanol and 2–pentanol were converted into alkyl halides through a certain series of steps. The first step was reflux, and the purpose of reflux is to add energy to the solution and not lose any solution to evaporation. This energy helps initiate the acid–catalyzed dehydration reaction and also promotes rearrangement. The next step was distillation, which functioned to separate liquids based on boiling points. The distillation utilizes boiling points to separate the alkyl halide products from many impurities that might exist. Reflux is the first step instead of distillation because refluxing allows the reaction to progress. If distillation was performed first, separation would begin before the reaction was allowed time to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, since the voltage adapter connected to the sand bath may not have been working properly, inconsistent heating patterns could have proposed a problem during reflux. Also, a few extra drops of water may have invaded the product while the flask was cooling in the ice bath during distillation. Furthermore, it is possible that not all of the organic layer was drained out of the separatory funnel during separation, and maybe the drying agent was not allowed enough time to remove all of the water. Errors will always hinder the success of a reaction, which will greatly effect the percent yield. Infrared spectroscopy (IR) is a very useful tool that can read a molecule's functional groups from a small sample. By monitoring the disappearance and appearance of certain groups, it is possible to confirm wether compounds have formed. In this experiment, for example, the reactants are alcohols, whose IRs will show a large and broad absorption around 3500 cm–1. These hydroxide groups are eventually replaced during the reactions, and the final products will not contain any hydroxides. Therefore, the IR of the products will not show the large and broad hydroxide absorption. Monitoring the disappearance of the hydroxide stretch will allow the reaction progression to be monitored also. The complete disappearance of this stretch will confirm that a new product has been formed. However, IR ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Alcohol At Sporting Events And Alcohol In today's society, sporting events and alcohol are intertwined. Social drinking has always been a part of the sporting spectrum, whether at a tailgate party, sports bar, professional stadium or arena, and even at home. Collegiate sporting events are no exception to this popular pastime. However, alcohol is not available at every NCAA sporting event. According to Mitchell (2015), only 25% of FBS colleges allow the sale of alcohol at sporting events. Obviously, the main concern for not allowing alcohol at sporting events is the risk of underage drinking, binge drinking, and rowdiness among students and fans. Despite this setback, many colleges are allowing the sales of alcohol in order to decrease the economic burden many colleges are facing. Several colleges such as the University of Maryland and the University of Memphis have recently started implementing the sales of alcohol for this reason. Not only is sales the main revenue stream for selling alcohol, but also sponsorship from the alcohol companies themselves. The idea of extra revenue may sound great for many collegiate athletic departments, but there are legal risks to take into full consideration. In a hypothetical situation where Dr. Mark Emmert resigns as president of the NCAA, the first priority that should be implemented by the new president should be the acceptance of alcohol sales at collegiate sporting events, specifically championship events. When looking at the NCAA as a whole, the biggest setback that most ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. The Effects Of Alcohol On Alcohol Consumption Throughout the years, there have been massive debates and arguments whether or not alcohol should be prohibited. In most countries, at a certain age, adults are allowed to purchase alcohol without being limited to certain choices. However, with the rise of alcoholic products, there are concerns for public health and safety. Many people argue that restrictions should be placed on alcohol consumption. To begin with, there are several factors that involve in alcohol consumption. Studies have shown that there is a direct correlation between alcohol consumption and crime. As alcohol intake increases, crime increases as well. In fact, it has been found that the more violent a crime is, the greater the likelihood that alcohol has been involved. Researchers have found that adults who were convicted at the time were either drinking or under the influence. However, there is not enough evidence that drinking alcohol necessarily causes a person to commit to a crime. Additional factors, such as sleep deprivation, psychological disorders, and physical conditions, may play an important role. Furthermore, rates of violent behavior and use of alcohol and other drugs are higher in adolescent boys than adolescent girls ("American Journal of Public Health"). Alcohol affects the cognitive part of the brain, leading to inappropriate behaviors, causing criminal acts. In addition, alcohol is a factor in 40% of all violent crimes today ("Alcohol and Crime"). Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of no alcohol is not an addiction. Whereas some are convinced that yes it is, others maintain that no it is not. Anyone can be addicted to alcohol, but alcohol is not in and of itself an addiction. The capacity of absorbing alcohol in tremendous amounts can occur over weeks or years, which can lead the individual not to have an addiction to alcohol. Many will ask the question of can excessive use of alcohol become an addiction? No, alcohol cannot be an addiction, some would contest consumption that consuming alcohol is for mere fun. Others still maintain the fact that the addiction is more of a destructive behavior because that is what occurred in their confusion. They argue, in fact, there is no major result of alcohol other than the fact an individual becomes drunk to cover up pain that doesn't lead the person to become an addict. Another question asked, could alcohol lead to having other addictions? No, Scientists have discovered points of alcohol addictions and whether or not it is even an addiction but more of a disease. Since that time, there has been an unprecedented shift toward increased alcoholic advertisements in an effort to increase market share and raise profits. This shift brings into light the challenge alcoholic companies face in balancing their fiduciary duties to their shareholders and their corporate and social responsibility to society. From society's perspective, any activities conducted by the alcohol beverage companies to remove alcohol related problems like violence, decreased morality and intoxication related problems like drinking driving are seldom advertised and marketed. In this sense, society is only seeing advertisements related to increased consumption leading to increased profits. Accordingly alcohol industries fail to fulfill their ethical duty to be informative and truthful in their advertising efforts. At present, alcohol beverage companies create a brand image by sponsoring sports and cultural activities that attract drinkers, first starting as a social drinker and then becoming regular drinkers (Munro & De Wever, 2008). The current alcohol advertising regulatory system in Australia should aim to minimize exposure and appeal to children (VAADA, 2010). In Australia, advertising activities are regulated by legislation and a code of practice such as the Advertiser Code of Ethics and Alcoholic Beverages Advertising Code (ABAC). This code is based on a voluntary system of self–regulation which is funded and administered by the alcohol beverage companies. In Australia and throughout other western countries, the misuse of alcohol by young people has been highlighted as a problem (Toumbourou et al 2003). Alcohol misuse amongst adolescents For many Australians, alcohol consumption is a pleasurable part of everyday life (Parliament of Victoria 2004). However in recent years there have been several reports highlighting that the proportion of adolescents consuming alcohol and the amount of alcohol they are drinking is at record levels (AIHW 2008; White and Hayman 2006; Shanahan and Hewitt 1999). The long and short term sequelae associated with risky or high risk alcohol consumption include negative physical, emotional and social consequences (NHMRC 2001). Immediate harms include accidents, injuries, decreased scholastic and sporting performance, aggression, violence, assault, disrupted family relationships, high risk sexual activity, driving while under the influence of alcohol and delinquent behaviour (Jones and Donovan 2001). Among young people aged 16 to 24 years, alcohol related harm is one of the leading causes of disease and injury burden (AIHW 2006). These findings are consistent with population based research in Europe, United States and Canada (Jernigan 2001). • 23. Alcohol Alcoholism And Alcohol Abuse Essay Alcoholism and alcohol abuse are different, although they have several connected characteristics, including genetics, how you were raised, social environment, and emotional health. Some of the following are indicators of alcohol abuse e.g., craving alcohol, having tried to quit in the past, but could not, spending longer time drinking than you expected, or continuing to drink even though it causes trouble with family or friends. An alcoholic is someone who has no control over alcohol and is unable to live a normal or healthy life; consequently, it causes a psychological and physical dependence upon alcohol. Alcoholics typically experience physical withdrawals when not drinking. Both disorders have a significant attribute for risky behavior e.g., drinking and driving or unsafe sex. Alcohol distresses all parts of the body, particularly the brain, pancreas, liver, and heart. Hereditary factors attribute to whether the individual has a propensity towards alcohol abuse, while studies indicate that there is a greater risk factor if there is a family history of substance abuse. It reveals secrets, is quarrelsome, lascivious, impudent, dangerous and mad."( "Alcoholism Quotes."). So with all these consequences associated with alcohol, why do people drink? What is alcoholism? It was hypothesised that the longest straight chained alcohol would produce the highest level of enthalpy. It was thought that branched chained molecules would have weaker attraction forces due to the fact that they couldn't line up in as a close proximity compared to straight chained alcohols. Resulting in weaker van de waals forces betwixt the branched molecules. Thus allowing, a weaker force necessary to break the molecule apart for combustion (Salters advanced chemistry, 2000). Advertising for alcoholic beverages makes drinking extremely appealing, causing a lot of underage kids to try alcohol for themselves. Underage drinking will happen no matter what, but the connection of alcohol to friendship and sex in contrast to the boring life of a sober business worker makes the problem much worse. Although each advertisement presented it differently, all 6 alcohol advertisements gave the impression that their product helps to bring people together. With the exception of "Brother" for Johnnie Walker, the number of people appearing in each advertisement increases with the amount of time that alcohol is shown. This creates a very clear connection between alcohol and social interaction, suggesting that drinking earns you friends. All humans have an innate desire for social interaction, but this desire is strongest in teens and young adults (Baumeister & Leary, 1995). Alcohol companies effectively use this desire to sell product to legal drinkers, but this desire draws in minors/illegal drinkers as well. • 34. Alcohol In America Nick Martinez Mr. Likes Period 7 LA 9 November 2016 The Truth: The Reality of Alcohol's Effect on America The term alcohol is such a casual term in America. Few people think twice about it. We Americans think we know everything about it, but do we really? The truth is, alcohol is in fact a drug. It is not one to take lightly either. Whenever an American sees a couple of guys drinking beers at a bar or a couple in love having a glass of wine, those people are really just doing drugs and trying to get a high. But few people see it like that; how it truthfully is. Alcohol has a lot of the same characteristics and attributes as many illegal drugs that people consider so dire. Alcohol kills people, ruins relationships, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because alcohol is legal and so pervasive, it plays a major role in the world of crime. According to a recent article, "Alcohol is a factor in 40 percent of all violent crimes today. According to the Department of Justice, 37 percent of almost two million convicted offenders currently in jail, report that they were drinking at the time of their arrest." (National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence) Sadly, alcohol is most frequently correlated with offenses of murder, rape, assault, and child and spousal abuse. Aside from crime, alcohol takes a heavy toll on the American economy. It is estimated that the cost of excessive alcohol consumption in the United States totaled about $223.5 billion in 2006 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). This equates to about $1.90 per drink; meaning that for every drink bought, it is costing taxpayers about $1.90. Further research indicates that in these $223.5 billion represent loss in workplace productivity, health care expenses, criminal justice expenses, and motor vehicle crashes. It is now apparent that the effects of alcohol not only impacts those who are directly affected by crime or physical complications by the drug, but it strikes every single American in their bank ... • 35. Essay On Alcohol In The Military Alcoholism and Drugs in the military The word alcoholism is defined as an addiction to the consumption of alcoholic liquor or the mental illness and compulsive behavior resulting from alcohol dependency. People in the military use and abuse drugs and alcohol for the same reasons that other people do: Drugs and alcohol can make you feel good. But the military lifestyle also may include other issues that can affect alcohol and drug abuse, such as: The stress of being in armed conflict or knowing that you may be involved in armed conflict. The stress of being separated from your spouse and family. Long periods of boredom on a base or in a war setting. A history of accepted alcohol use. People in the military use the same drugs as people who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Alcohol use is also higher among men and women in military service than among civilians. Almost half of active duty service members (47 percent) reported binge drinking in 2008–up from 35 percent in 1998. In 2008, 20 percent of military personnel reported binge drinking every week in the past month; the rate was considerably higher–27 percent–among those with high combat exposure. Regarding medical expenditures, studies have found that excessive alcohol use by military members results in an annual cost of $425 million. Excessive drinking within the military is estimated to result in a loss of 320,000 work days and 34,400 arrests per year, half of which are for driving under the influence (Ames, G., and Cunradi, C. Alcohol use and preventing alcohol–related problems among young adults in the military. Alcohol Research & Health 28:252–257, 2004). Service members may carry the psychological and physical wounds of their military experience with them into subsequent civilian life. In one study, one in four veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan reported symptoms of a mental or cognitive disorder; one in six reported symptoms of post– traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These disorders are strongly associated with substance abuse ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Alcohol not only plays a role in religion in the present, it also plays a role in the past. Alcohol has been made with honey and juice for thousands of years. There was a type of alcohol that was made in early China around 7000 B.C. In India, there was alcohol called sura and this was used between 2000 and 3000 B.C. and this beverage was made from condensed rice. Alcohol could also be made from honey water and this was called mead. The alcohol made from berries and honey came from the Middle East. Alcohol was used for nutrition, medication, rituals, funerals, and for enjoyment. However, alcohol use can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Teen's brains mature as they get older so there brain isn't fully developed until they are in their twenties. This may be the reason for teens engaging in dangerous activities. For fun, teen's like to experiment with drugs and alcohol. Since teen's brains are still developing, this may be a reason why teens are able to consume more alcohol before experiencing the effects of drinking alcohol. Teens may have drinking issues from genetics of family members or from being around people that drink. This increases the chances of teens being engaged with alcohol. This makes teens experience drinking problems and drink at an early age. This could also become a problem for kids with different disorders. The environment that surrounds a child can also affect drinking behavior. Peers and family members can influence teens to engage in bad alcohol behavior. Media can also be a negative influence on teens. Alcohol use is shown on TV and promoted in advertisements. Alcohol dependence can be harmful, especially for teen drinkers. Teens think that alcohol dependence happens all the time and that no harm can be caused from it. From the article Teenage Binge Drinking, it says "Teens seem to believe that alcohol abuse such as binge drinking is normal, expected and harmless" (Caron, 1). • 37. What Is the Appeal of Alcohol? Alcohol is one of the most abused drugs in the world. Why do people use alcohol in the first place? Many people do experience a relaxed feeling known as a "buzz," after having alcohol. They only focus on the pleasurable feeling the alcohol bestows on them. Each person has a different reason for drinking alcohol. Most people want to have an enjoyable time with others and drink. Others may drink to escape stress caused by a tough day in the office or being laid off from the company. Alcoholic parents do not mature decisions and should not be parents. Alcohol makes dealing with children tough, thoughts are slowed and the tendency to overreact to normal actions increases. By partaking in alcohol consumption, risks develop that ordinarily would ... Jeff Stevens conducted a study on the effects of alcohol from parent to child and discovered, "Alcoholism can pass from one generation to the next due to the influence of the environment" (Is Alcoholism a Disease?). While alcoholism has been proven to not be a genetic disorder, it can be strongly influenced by the environment and the people in it. "Markus Heilig, director at U.S. National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and the National Institute on Drug Abuse, said, 'Among alcoholic patients, rates for physical abuse were reported at 24 percent and 33 percent for men and women'" (Everyday Health). Parents are the role models that are supposed to guide young children to a successful future. Often children are not raised properly and are abused. Kenneth Leonard, Ph.D., conducted a study on alcoholic fathers and found, "The alcohol–abusing fathers were less sensitive in their parenting" (Mental Health). The alcohol tends to lessen the father's sympathy, so he becomes more aggressive than normal. Physical abuse caused by the father leads to bruises, cuts, broken bones, or emotional scars. To relieve themselves of the pain, the abused children will experiment with alcohol. The escape route the abused children take is alcohol because it takes children to a place where they can be cheerful and away from the abuse. It is a fact that, "The experience of being abused as a child may increase a person's risk for alcohol–related problems as an adult" (Alcohol Abuse as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Introduction Of A Primary Alcohol Substitution 5. Introduction In this experiment, a primary alcohol was converted into a primary bromoalkane using hydrobromic acid. The reaction was done under reflux and then distilled to obtain a product of higher purity. The degree of the alkyl halide obtained from the experiment was tested with silver nitrate and sodium iodide. An infrared (IR) spectra and the weight of the product were obtained for further analysis. The IR gave information on the present functional groups and product weight was used to calculate the percent yield. 6. Data and Results The product obtained after reflux was a yellow liquid. With the halide tests, the product reacted faster with sodium iodide to form a precipitate than with silver nitrate. This indicates that the degree of the product was primary and that bromine did replace the alcohol group. The IR of the product showed four peaks at 3326.36, 2932.86, 1465.34, and 1028.73. These peaks indicate O–H, C–H, C–H3, and C–O bonds, respectively, within the product. 2.032 grams of product were recovered from the reaction. With this, a percent yield of 27.14% was calculated. 7. Discussion and Conclusion Nucleophilic aliphatic substitution is the replacement of one group for another at a saturated, sp3–hybridized carbon atom. This process is often used to interconvert functional groups, such as in the preparation of alkyl halides. In these reactions, nucleophiles attack the carbon atom–which the electronegative leaving group breaks its bond ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Figure 3 illustrate the boroughs that each participants reside in. 50% lived in Brooklyn and 25% live in Queens and the remainder lives in the Bronx as shown in figure 3. Design and Data Collection Method To answer the research question or test the hypothesis, a quantitative study was design to determine the relationship between parenting styles and alcohol use among adolescences. In this research, we identified the different instruments needed to collect the data on a sample of participants. Also, the validity ( credibility) and reliability ( dependability) test were researched for both instrument. The reliability was also analyzed using the SPSS software to determine the instruments dependability in this study. Parental Authority Questionnaire One appropriate method for answering the research question or testing the hypothesis is the Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ). PAQ was created by John R. Buri. "The PAQ is a 30–item instrument design to measure parental authority, or disciplinary practices, from the point of view of the child (of any age)" (Corcoran, & Fischer, 2000).
