when renewable energy sources remain in their growing stage of development and distribution.

History
Since 1939 when Hahn and Strassman found that fission released energy and neutrons to help
uranium nuclei to be a self–sustaining chain reaction that would lead to an enormous release of
energy (WNA), harassing nuclear fission become an important part in creating a nuclear bomb. The
government had control over all nuclear research and began the Manhattan Project. "In June 1942

figures will cause plummeting electricity prices and make fission plants far too expensive.
However, prices and efficiency are useless if the safety factor is abandoned. All three topics are
dealt with in fusion, that is why it is such a miracle. In fact, a meltdown in a fusion reactor is
impossible, which cannot be said for fission. "Compared with fission reactors the absence of
such fission products as radioactive iodine and cesium from the fusion cycle reduces the potential

reactor the fuel is formed in a solid form which must be cooled by water, and if water is unavailable

This is an easy and effective way to create electricity and can be used reliably without much cause
for concern. As seen in the diagram above the reactor in a nuclear facility is located inside of a
building. That building is created from reinforced cement and is made to hold the fuel in case of an
emergency.
The opponents of nuclear power claim that nuclear power is not safe and it puts the general
population at risk of radiation. They point towards the Chernobyl accident as reason that nuclear
power should not be allowed. The Chernobyl accident happened in 1986 in the Ukraine and was

functional reactor. What his experiments, and those of earlier scientists like Otto Hahn and Fritz
Strassman, showed was that by splitting the nucleus of heavy radioactive elements (like uranium
and cadmium), energy is released, and the reaction could be designed to generate a sustained energy
source (Schlager & Weisblatt, 2006). Subsequent experiments illuminated the promise of nuclear

potential risks and benefits of nuclear power as a fuel source and why the United States should

 How Nuclear Power Works
Natural uranium undergoes the steps of mining and milling, conversion, enrichment, and fabrication
to convert it from ore to fuel pellets. Uranium isotopes are enriched, separating the fissionable
uranium from the unfissionable, and a fuel fabricator presses it into fuel rods (WIT, 2013). The
atoms in uranium fuel are split apart to release heat energy, which makes steam and drives a turbine
to produce electricity. Used nuclear fuel is stored in a deep pool of water afterward (WIT, 2013).

miscalculate their nuclear reactor designs. In March 28, 1979, the US endured one of their biggest

Nuclear energy uses the heat produced from nuclear transformations and reactions to power turbines
which create energy. A majority of the time, nuclear plants run off the fission of one of three
elements: Uranium 235, Uranium 233, or Plutonium 239. Something else that Dr. McTaggart said
that really stuck with me was that fissile isotopes like U–235 give off more energy than is put into
the system. Currently in the US, nuclear power makes up 8.3% of our country's total energy and all
of the energy produced goes towards the electric power sector, where it makes up 22% of the total
amount of electric power.
Some advantages to the use of nuclear energy are that it has a carbon footprint of zero, it creates
constant energy, and it has a low operating cost. With no incidents, nuclear power is very
environmentally friendly, with no emissions and lots of power capacity. It is also very efficient
because most of the time, the energy that is harvested out of nuclear fission is greater than the
energy put in. The same thing cannot be said for any other resource, renewable or not. Once they are

The day began like any other. A city full of life woke up to continue its normal routine. Early
morning sunlight glinted off of surroundings along the horizon. Shiny cars crawled through the
streets. Pedestrians exited their homes and walked along the sidewalks. Bright, luscious green trees
and colorful gardens lined the streets. Children crossed the roads to get to their favorite

electricity for over 2 million people. However, this is just one example in just one state in the United
States. According to the Nuclear Energy Institute, 11 percent of the world's energy comes from

However, even though nuclear power has made its mark as a global competitor in the realm of green
energy, incidents such as 3 Mile Island, Chernobyl, and Fukushima have created a global sense of
uneasiness. On top of this underlying fear, the huge building costs of new nuclear plants has lead to
a stunt in the growth of nuclear energy even though operation costs for nuclear energy at

In comparing different forms of energy, a comparison must be made between nuclear and coal. It is
already widely known that the burning of coal in factories has a negative impact on the environment
and is one of, if not the most, destructive. But what is not widely known is that coal plants emit
more radiation into the environment than nuclear power plants. In fact, coal plants release 100 times
more radiation than nuclear power plants (Hvistendahl). This is because within coal are trace
amounts of the two radioactive elements uranium and thorium. When coal is burned it produces fly
ash, which concentrates the uranium and thorium at up to 10 times their original levels

Just about every part of today's society involves energy of some sorts. But as our society progresses,
the need for better, more efficient power sources must be addressed. Out of all of the choices, the
most popular to date is nuclear power. Nuclear power is a growing industry that is getting mixed
reviews from various sources. But which side is right? Is nuclear power the future? Or is it just
another problem the world will have to deal with? The answer is simple. Nuclear Energy is the
future and will power almost the entire world one day. Nuclear power is the best source of power
because it produces lots of power, it produces clean energy, it is cheap, and it is sustainable. Before
that though, a bit of history about nuclear energy. In 1789, Uranium was discovered by a German
chemist named Martin Klaproth. Later on in 1902 Ernest Rutherford, discovered how radioactivity
as a spontaneous event emits an alpha or beta particle from the nucleus that creates a different
element. In 1919 he wanted a better understanding of atoms, so he fired alpha particles from a
radium source into nitrogen and found that nuclear rearrangement was occurring, with formation of

TMI has provided electricity since 1979. The Exelon Corporation might shut down the plant. There
are many pros to nuclear power and many cons. I think we should keep the plant open. Here's why,
if we close the plant, employees will lose their jobs. Also, nuclear energy is clean energy. If we close
TMI down, then it would take years to build a new kind of energy source. You wouldn't like it if you
lost your job, would you? No, because that would be terrible. Think what would happen if you lost
your job. They wouldn't make money for a while, till you found another job. Finding another job
quickly might be hard. What if you are the only parent and you don't have a husband/wife to make
money for your family while you look for another job. In addition, if you shut down the plant, then
there would still be waste still left behind. Who knows what that would do to our
economy/environment. If you just let the waste sit there, it could eventually run off into the water
and kill organisms living there. Also, it could soak into the ground and kill organisms there and
demolish plants that are growing there or could possibly grow there. As you see, waste that just sits
there will just ruin things. So why not make the waste a little more environmentally friendly and
keep it stored in the perfectly fine power plant. 19.5% of electricity is nuclear. If you take that away
from people, they will not be happy. People use it because it is clean energy. When you take that
away, you are left with other resources that will pollute the air when used. Also, 38.8% of electricity
is coal. Coal is not very environmentally friendly. Keeping TMI open, would give people a reason to
use clean energy, nuclear energy. Some people might not want to keep it open. Some reasons are
that it's too expensive and it could be dangerous. People are worried that there will be a dangerous
accident and everyone near TMI will have to move and evacuate. Since the time TMI has started

INDIAN REACTORS ARE SAFE, SAYS SCIENTIST–'INDIAN NUKE POWER PLANTS SAFE'
Bangalore: Japan's killer earthquake that caused a nuclear reactor to shut down and a radiation scare
are unlikely to negatively impact India's ambitious nuclear power programme, says a nuclear
scientist and former official of the atomic energy regulatory board (AERB)"I honestly am not

TMI has been providing electricity since 1979. The Exelon Corporation might shut down the plant.
There are many pros to nuclear power and many cons. I think we should keep the plant open. Here's
why, if we close the plant, employees will lose their jobs. Also, nuclear energy is clean energy. If we
close TMI down, then it would take years to build a new kind of energy source. You wouldn't like it
if you lost your job, would you? No, because that would be terrible. Think what would happen if
you lost your job. They wouldn't make money for a while, till you found another job. Finding
another job quickly might be hard. What if you are the only parent and you don't have a
husband/wife to make money for your family while you look for another job. In addition, if you
shutdown the plant, then there would still be waste still left behind. Who know what that would do
to our economy/environment. If you just let the waste sit there, it could eventually run off into the
water and kill organisms living there. Also, it could soak into the ground and kill organisms there
and demolish plants that are growing there or could possibly grow there. As you see, waste that just
sits there will just ruin things. So why not make the waste a little more environmentally friendly and

that nuclear power plants have extra building components for safety, they take a long time to build
