Definitions  Responsible- taking care of yourself and your things  Citizen- person who lives in an area such as a city, town, or village  Now that you know what responsible means and what citizen means, What is a responsible citizen? Someone who takes care of himself/herself, the other town citizens, his/her things, and the town’s things.
What are some citizens of a community? Parents  Kids/Students  Teachers  Policemen Firemen Doctors  Mail men Grocer  Construction Workers  Business Men
How do citizens act responsibly? Obey the laws Vote  Pay attention to authority figures  Care about problems of the community Volunteer Donate Money Help others in need  Use manners
It Takes A Village Read the story It Takes A Village to the students. Tell them to look for characters in the story that are responsible citizens  Remind them that a responsible citizen is Someone who takes care of himself/herself, the other town citizens, his/her things, and the town’s things. “Were any of the characters of this story responsible citizens in this way?” “Why do you think that character is a responsible citizen?”
It Takes A Village  Reread the story and have the students read along the repeating parts of the story
It Takes A Village  Name characters that are not already on the list and ask students whether they acted as a responsible citizen
It Takes A Village  Read and review the completed list: “These characters were all responsible in the same way. Did these characters take care of themselves, the other citizens, their things, or the town’s things?” Discuss students’ ideas Would the mat seller have been a responsible citizen if he had not let Kokou touch his mats? Was Yemi a responsible citizen? Explain why you think she was or was not.
My Family and Me! Activity  Students will learn about their family members, how to be a responsible family member, and a responsible member of a group Materials: pages for the family book, enough pages for each child
My Family and Me! Activity Activity: Make a book with each of these sentences at the bottom of each page. Make a large square in the middle of each page for the students to make a picture of that sentence as to how it applies to their family... This is me!  My name is: This is my family: My favorite place to eat with my family is _____. My favorite thing to do with my family is_____.
