3. Magazine research-Lula
Magazine research- Lula
I really like the publication Lula for a lot of reasons. First of
all I love the overall vintage girly style of the magazine
because it is very individual, and I like the way it stands out
4. on
the shelf compared to other fashion magazines. I also love
the way it ties in other art forms such as fine art and
literature because I think it creates a really good USP for the
magazine.
I really like the images in the magazine because of the fact
that they look very vintage and the fact that they are very
well styled. I think uniquely styled images would be a good
way to interpret the word distort because you could really
be creative and produce beautiful images. Also I think the
way that they edit their images is really beautiful and I think
it is how they create their vintage style. Editing the images
in such a way is another way that I can interpret the word
distort.
The main things I have noticed about Lula magazine is the
fact that most of their DPS are one image spread across two
pages or a page text and a page with an image. This doesn’t
fit in well with my brief so I will probably not use Lula
magazine as my chosen publication, however it has given
me a lot of inspiration.
5. I think that the target market for Lula magazine is woman
aged 18-25, who are interested in art and vintage style.

6. I
really like i-D
magazine front
covers because of the face that each cover is so different
however they all have the one eye closed or covered. I
really love this unique style and if definitely something I
want to consider for my front cover image.
Another thing that I noticed was the idea that almost all of
their front cover images have a tight crop and are from the
waist up. So if I decided that my chosen publication was i-D
magazine I would have to use that framing.
I also noticed that a few of the images appeared to be quite
documentary like, which I love because I like the way they
seem to tie in documentary photography with studio
photography, which I think works well as another USP.
I think that the target market for i-D magazine is mainly
women aged 18-30 whom are interested in fashion. This is
because I have noticed that the majority of models on i-D
magazine front covers are women, therefore I think the
magazine reaches out to a predominately female market.
8. Magazine research- Vogue
Vogue is probably one of the most popular fashion
magazines on the market. Their target market ranges from
18 year old fashion students to famous fashion designers; it
reaches a lot of countries, and therefore reaches a lot of
different people.
The main thing I noticed about Vogue is the fact it only
really uses celebrities and supermodels for its front cover
images. I think this is mainly down to how successful the
magazine is. However part of me feels like Vogue has lost
some value because of this because now I feel like it
included a lot of gossip about celebrity’s and what they are
wearing rather than publishing things about real fashion.
However I still do like Vogue as a publication because of the
quality of the images on their front covers and DPS.
The main things I have taken away from Vogue are to make
sure my images are high quality because I think it makes the
10. My chosen Publication- i-D
I have decided to go for i-D magazine for my publication of
choice however I plan to include inspiration from Lula
magazine because I really loved the images, but I could not
use it as my chosen publication because of the style of DPS
images.
My plan is to produce a front cover in which I will use a
female model and I will use tight cropping and shoot from
the waist up. I will have one of her eyes covered to match
the other i-D front cover images. However I plan to use a
vintage style and add a lot of mid tones to the image in
post-production, to match the styling of Lula magazine.
For my DPS I plan to be really creative and involve a lot of
movement to create interesting and stylish images. Once
again the images will have a lot of mid tones to give a
vintage feel. I will use the same model as the front cover,
and shoot from a similar angle.
So my final images so be a mixture of i-D magazine and Lula
magazine. The reason behind this is because I loved both
magazines, but i-D magazine matched my brief more
however Lula magazine matched my style more, that is why
I have decided to tie the two together.
11. Front Cover Image Idea
My idea for my front cover is to have my model covering
her right eye with her right hand. This is because this is i-D
magazines signature front cover pose. I plan to style her in
festival style clothing because it is the time in which most
magazines focus on spring/summer trends.
I want the image to be interesting and I will be focusing a
lot of makeup and styling before I begin to shoot because I
want it to be perfect.
I plan to use a white background and quite harsh flash, so
that the images almost look like they were taken at a
festival, and also because I want the images to look quite
documentary style because it is a style that i-D sometimes
uses.
I also plan to add quite a few filters to the image in postproduction so it gives the sense that the image is quite
vintage, and also because I want to tie in Lula magazine in
with the images.
12. The Model
The model I am using is a model I have used before for
college projects and for other various work. She is perfect
for the shoot for many reasons.
She has long brown/red hair which will work well for the
front cover image because it ties in well with
spring/summer festival style. She also has very pale skin
which will contrast well with the make-up I plan to use so
that the make-up will really stand out.
She is a very good, professional model who will be excellent
for my front cover and DPS.
13. Styling
Clothing/Accessory
Denim Jacket
Black top
Flower hairband
Flower ring
Gold necklaces
Explanation
The main reason the model will be wearing the denim
jacket for the front cover shoot is because I am aimin
for festival styling and I know denim is very popular
within summer/spring fashion. I also think it adds
texture to the image and adds an element of interest
I wanted the model to wear a basic black top under t
denim jacket so that the blue of the jacket would stan
out. Also I think it contrasts well with the amount of r
in the image and makes the red look bold.
I really love this hair band and I once again think that
ties in well with summer/spring festival style because
summer there is a lot of beautiful flowers and becaus
flower hairbands are a really popular accessory for
festival goers. I also think because the flowers are red
makes the image colourful and ties in well with the re
in the image.
I decided to make the model wear the flower ring
because I think it obviously ties the theme of festival
style, but it also acts as the distortion for the image. T
is because the flower replaces her eye.
I decided to place a few gold necklaces around the
models neck because I wanted to tie in another colou
like the way that the necklaces peak through. I also
think because it is for a fashion magazine you would
expect to see a lot of jewellery on a model.
14. Styling
Hair/Make up
Hair
Make up
Explanation
I decided to style the hair in an urban sort of
relaxed way. This is because I want the style to be
like festival style. I wanted the model to look casual
and summery and I think that by having the hair
down in a centre parting with some soft waves will
express the summery look I am aiming for.
There are a lot of elements to the make up so I will
explain them all individually.
• Foundation- soft matte foundation so
that the model looks almost flawless
and so that the skin looks soft and
natural. I wanted the skin to look this
way so that it would look as if she was
meant to be a model for a magazine.
• Eye make-up- I decided to go for
simple black eyeliner because it is a
popular, but simple summer style that
a lot of girls go for. I added some
highlighter to the upper brow and
beneath the eye to make the eye stand
out and so the eyes look radiant
• Lips- I went for a bright red matte
lipstick so that the red of the hairband
and ring ties in with the model. Also I
think that it makes the image
interesting because she stands out
because of the make-up.
16. DPS image idea
My idea for my DPS links in with the styling of my front
cover. I plan to have two images side by side. The images
will be full of movement. This is to once again represent the
festival style I am aiming for. The model will be wearing the
same things as she wore for the front cover image however
I plan to introduce false eyelashes which are very unique
and interesting.
I plan to edit the images similarly to the way I edited the
front cover image by adding mid tones to give the vintage
and Lula magazine style.
17. Model and styling
I am going to use the same model and styling as I used for
the DPS. This is because I want the story of the images to
continue. However I am adding some additional false
eyelashes which are made from black paper. The paper is
cut out into the shapes of grass and deer. I think the use of
these eye lashes will tie in the outdoors festival style I want
but also add an interesting part to the image as well as
being unique.
