Fish Tank
Fish Tank
 A mother and daughter find themselves locked in an ugly battle
over the same man in this drama from writer and director Andrea
Arnold. Mia Williams (Katie Jarvis) is 15 years old and lives in a
shabby apartment block with her mother, Joanne (Kierston
Wareing), and younger sister, Tyler (Rebecca Griffiths). Mia is a
reckless and rebellious teenager who frequently argues with her
mother and sister and has run afoul of the authorities at school,
leading to her being suspended. With plenty of time on her hands,
Mia spends her days drinking when she can find alcohol and
partying in a empty flat near her apartment. Joanne is a single
mother, and she's begun dating a new man, Connor (Michael
Fassbender); when Joanne brings him home to meet the girls, Mia is
immediately attracted to him, and it's soon clear Connor feels the
same way about her. Mia attempts to seduce Connor to take him
away from her mother, and when she succeeds, Joanne's greatest
anger is not with the man who has slept with her underaged
daughter, but the girl who is now a rival for the affections of her
lover. Fish Tank was an official selection at the 2009 Cannes Film
Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Information
 Fish Tanks, in my opinion, has two target
audience, 15-18 and 30-40. I think this
because Andrea Arnold wanted the film
to be critically acclaimed and it did, so
the film is aimed to appeal to the critics.
However the film also has a target
audience of 15-18 because of the age of
the main character.
Four Weddings
and a Funeral
Four weddings and a Funeral
 The film follows the fortunes of Charles
and his friends as they wonder if they will
ever find true love and marry. Charles
thinks he's found "Miss Right" in Carrie, an
American. This British subtle comedy
revolves around Charlie, his friends and
the four weddings and one funeral which
they attend. Written by Rob Hartill

The Selfish
Giant
The Selfish Giant plot summery
● An official selection at the Cannes Film Festival, The Selfish
Giant is a contemporary fable about 13 year old Arbor
(Conner Chapman) and his best friend Swifty (Shaun
Thomas). Excluded from school and outsiders in their own
neighborhood, the two boys meet Kitten (Sean Gilder), a
local scrap dealer. Wandering their town with just a horse
and a cart, they begin collecting scrap metal for him.
Swifty has a natural gift with horses while Arbor emulates
Kitten - keen to impress him and make some money.
However, Kitten favors Swifty, leaving Arbor feeling hurt
and excluded, driving a wedge between the boys. As
Arbor becomes increasingly greedy and exploitative,
tensions build, leading to a tragic event that transforms
them all.

Comparisons
Comparisons ill Manors to
Skyfall
 ill Manors relied heavily on Plan B’s album to help
advertise the film however Skyfall could have
easily not have had Adele do a song and an
Album by Thomas Newman to promote the film
because there are plenty of other things thay did
to promote the film.
 The budget of Skyfall was $200,000,000 in
comparison to ill Manors budget of £100,000.
 ill Manors was shown at film festivals to help
promote the film, whereas Skyfall didn’t need to
because of the amount of money that was given
to the advertisement team to promote the film.
Comparison ill Manors to
Skyfall
 The initial release of ill Manors took
£250,000 in the first weekend from 191
cinemas in the UK, whereas Skyfall took
£20,180,369 in the first weekend from
587cinemas in the UK.
Cross Media Convergent
ill Manors and Skyfall
 ill Manors uses cross media convergent in
the form of that Plan B released his album
out at a similar time as the film (which he
directed). The album and film had the
same name.
 Also interviews on YouTube will be cross
media convergent.
 Skyfall: games, cast interviews, song from
Adele,
Synergy
ill Manors and Skyfall
 ill Manors uses synergy in the form of that
Plan B released his album out at a similar
time as the film (which he directed). The
album and film had the same name.
 Skyfall: album, coke advertisement, t-
shirts, fragrance
Issues Raised with National
and Local Audiences
Fish Tank and FWAAF
 Fish tank uses very strong language so if it
were to be released in America the language
would have to be changed. Fish Tank is about
the side of England that an American
audience does not see on screen so it was
very unlikely that it would be released in
America.
 Four weddings and a funeral is an English film
and is about the side of England that an
American audience would know so this film
was released in America.
Class
Fish Tank and FWAAF
 Looking at the trailer for Fish Tank and Four
Weddings and a Funeral there is a clear
difference in class. Fish Tank is stereotypically
working class and Four Weddings and a
Funeral is stereotypically middle class.
 Four weddings and a Funeral is a British film
but was very much aimed for the American
audience. The film is the stereotype of what
America thinks of England whereas Fish Tank is
the side of England that they don’t see or
don’t want to see.
Independent institutions
 Targeting only a certain of audience due
to small advertising campaign and a low
budget looses out on a wider audience.
 Restricted to certain genres e.g. social
realist due to low budget and lack of
special effects making most of the films
created by independent institutions
similar.
Conglomerate Institutions
 These institutions have no trouble with
targeting there audiences because they
are both vertically and horizontally
integration so they can afford the best
advertising that creates synergy.
Technical Convergence
Production-
 New technology's such as 3D are used in
many films now and this makes the
production aspect of making a film
harder but also easier because it has to
be shoot on digital rather then film. Digital
is cheaper and easier to distribute.

Technical Convergence
Distribution and marketing-
 The use of digital rather then film makes it
easier to distribute but piracy is an issue.
 TV adverts
 Web 2.0 is used to promote films on social
media site and/or YouTube.
Technical convergence
Exhibition-
 The development of new smart phones
creates a new way in which the readers
can consume films.
 Video on demand (VOD) also gives a
new way to watch films
 Watching a film in 3D or Imax.

Case Study

  • 3. Fish Tank  A mother and daughter find themselves locked in an ugly battle over the same man in this drama from writer and director Andrea Arnold. Mia Williams (Katie Jarvis) is 15 years old and lives in a shabby apartment block with her mother, Joanne (Kierston Wareing), and younger sister, Tyler (Rebecca Griffiths). Mia is a reckless and rebellious teenager who frequently argues with her mother and sister and has run afoul of the authorities at school, leading to her being suspended. With plenty of time on her hands, Mia spends her days drinking when she can find alcohol and partying in a empty flat near her apartment. Joanne is a single mother, and she's begun dating a new man, Connor (Michael Fassbender); when Joanne brings him home to meet the girls, Mia is immediately attracted to him, and it's soon clear Connor feels the same way about her. Mia attempts to seduce Connor to take him away from her mother, and when she succeeds, Joanne's greatest anger is not with the man who has slept with her underaged daughter, but the girl who is now a rival for the affections of her lover. Fish Tank was an official selection at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

  • 11. Information  Fish Tanks, in my opinion, has two target audience, 15-18 and 30-40. I think this because Andrea Arnold wanted the film to be critically acclaimed and it did, so the film is aimed to appeal to the critics. However the film also has a target audience of 15-18 because of the age of the main character.
  • 13. Four weddings and a Funeral  The film follows the fortunes of Charles and his friends as they wonder if they will ever find true love and marry. Charles thinks he's found "Miss Right" in Carrie, an American. This British subtle comedy revolves around Charlie, his friends and the four weddings and one funeral which they attend. • 44. Comparisons ill Manors to Skyfall  ill Manors relied heavily on Plan B’s album to help advertise the film however Skyfall could have easily not have had Adele do a song and an Album by Thomas Newman to promote the film because there are plenty of other things thay did to promote the film.  The budget of Skyfall was $200,000,000 in comparison to ill Manors budget of £100,000.  ill Manors was shown at film festivals to help promote the film, whereas Skyfall didn’t need to because of the amount of money that was given to the advertisement team to promote the film.
  • 45. Comparison ill Manors to Skyfall  The initial release of ill Manors took £250,000 in the first weekend from 191 cinemas in the UK, whereas Skyfall took £20,180,369 in the first weekend from 587cinemas in the UK.
  • 46. Cross Media Convergent ill Manors and Skyfall  ill Manors uses cross media convergent in the form of that Plan B released his album out at a similar time as the film (which he directed). • 48. Issues Raised with National and Local Audiences Fish Tank and FWAAF  Fish tank uses very strong language so if it were to be released in America the language would have to be changed. Fish Tank is about the side of England that an American audience does not see on screen so it was very unlikely that it would be released in America.  Four weddings and a funeral is an English film and is about the side of England that an American audience would know so this film was released in America.
  • 49. Class Fish Tank and FWAAF  Looking at the trailer for Fish Tank and Four Weddings and a Funeral there is a clear difference in class. Fish Tank is stereotypically working class and Four Weddings and a Funeral is stereotypically middle class.  Four weddings and a Funeral is a British film but was very much aimed for the American audience. The film is the stereotype of what America thinks of England whereas Fish Tank is the side of England that they don’t see or don’t want to see.
  • 50. Independent institutions  Targeting only a certain of audience due to small advertising campaign and a low budget looses out on a wider audience.  Restricted to certain genres e.g. social realist due to low budget and lack of special effects making most of the films created by independent institutions similar.
  • 51. Conglomerate Institutions  These institutions have no trouble with targeting there audiences because they are both vertically and horizontally integration so they can afford the best advertising that creates synergy.
  • 52. Technical Convergence Production-  New technology's such as 3D are used in many films now and this makes the production aspect of making a film harder but also easier because it has to be shoot on digital rather then film. Digital is cheaper and easier to distribute. 
  • 53. Technical Convergence Distribution and marketing-  The use of digital rather then film makes it easier to distribute but piracy is an issue.  TV adverts  Web 2.0 is used to promote films on social media site and/or YouTube.
  • 54. Technical convergence Exhibition-  The development of new smart phones creates a new way in which the readers can consume films.  Video on demand (VOD) also gives a new way to watch films  Watching a film in 3D or Imax.
