Latinos represent a significant economic engine in this country.
By 2045, Latinos are expected to comprise nearly 25% of the U.S.
population.
Our communities persistently encounter disproportionate
economic and health impacts.
Today, Latinos are overrepresented among people living in poverty
and face poorer health outcomes due to persistent systemic
environmental and economic inequity
Over 67% of Latinos are concerned about climate change.
85% of Latino voters want to see government action on reducing
pollution.
CLEAN TRANSPORTATION + ENERGY
Transportation is biggest source of GHG
emissions in the U.S -- in 2018 accounted for
28% of GHG emissions:
- 59% of that from light-duty vehicles (cars)
- Between 2000 - 2018, transportation emissions
increased more than any other sector.
Cleaner and more equitable energy and
transportation infrastructure can significantly
improve health and wellbeing for all people, in
particular Latinx and other communities who
bear the brunt of emissions effects.
Clean infrastructure can also create substantive
economic and social gains by improving
mobility and access for all.
EV EQUITY FOR LATINOS
4
Recent nationally representative consumer survey conducted by
Consumer Reports:
71% of drivers were interested in getting an electric car.
48% said lack of access to public charging infrastructure was a
concern
43% cited vehicle cost as a disincentive.
Equity must be central to EV infrastructure planning and how
underserved communities can best be served.
Expanding access to EV infrastructure is crucial for ending reliance on
GHG emission vehicles.
- Reduce vehicle emissions, which is crucial for improving
health outcomes and environmental quality of life in
Latino/x and other frontline communities.
- Work directly with relevant federal agencies, including
US DOT, EPA, and Energy to support policy for stronger
fuel efficiency standards and accelerate the transition to
EVs.
- Joined National Electric Vehicle Coalition Initiative, a
national coalition of nonprofits, labor organizations, and
companies that are leading the charge to support federal
action on a national charging network.
- Give testimony, lead letters, work in coalitions
advocating for equitable access to EV infrastructure and
purchase incentives and equitable federal and state
rulemaking.
We collaborated with
Consumer Reports to
create a TikTok video
that helps familiarize
folks with what EV
chargers look like and
how they work.
