This document discusses three main locations for the dream sequences in a music video: space, beach, and paint war in the woods.
For the space location, the ideas are to use a small room decorated with tin foil or a completely white room/hallway with props and lighting to resemble a spaceship or alien world. The beach locations proposed are Cromer beach for its sandy areas and Southwold beach for its colorful beach huts. For the paint war, a large enclosed wooded area is needed, with the options being Thetford Forest or Tyrrells Woods, though Thetford Forest would require more travel. Each location will be used for different parts of the song in a montage style.
2. For our music video we have chosen 3 main locations to use for the 'dream' part
of the music video.
The beginning of the music video will show the character's normal (monotonous
life). This will include a montage of her eating with her family,
sitting in a classroom and sitting with her boyfriend on a sofa.
The family and boyfriend parts will be shot in one of our houses during the day
to use as much natural lighting as possible but use additional lighting if needed.
Each location will be used in one section of the song, but in each section will be
in a montage style.
The music video will then move to her 'dreams' and the 3 main settings:
3. Space
Our ideas for this location are using a small enclosed room and using tin foil to
make it seem like a spaceship, or something out of this world. For this we would
need to use an empty room with not much furniture to allow the characters to
move freely in the space provided. We would use disco balls and flashy lights to
make it more mysterious, but referencing the retro side to the setting as well.
4. Another idea for the location would be to use a completely white room/hallway.
As seen in the photo below it would reflect more of a spaceship but we could
use props and lighting to reflect a more qwerky side to the dream. We could also
use glow in the dark paint/ neon paint to add some colour to the scene. We
would use natural lighting but added artificial lighting to make the setting overly
white and sterile looking.
5. What inspired us to use space as one of the locations is the film Gravity.
Although it used expensive equipment and intricate special effects, the
emptiness but freeness that the astronauts can move around in. Although this
would be incredibly artistic and surreal to reflect the dream, it would be very
hard to get right, well with a low budget and limited technology. A novel that
also inspired the space location is 'The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy'. It's fun
way of looking at the galaxy influenced me into wanting to reflect that in our
music video.
6. When relating to Goodwin's theory the visuals wont have a simple relationship
with the lyrics. We could use this location in the second verse with the lyrics:
"I'm sitting on the rocks a thousand crazy eyes
And everyone seems to be hypnotised
By the golden sky passing by
When the sun goes down we come back around"
The characters could interact with aliens relating to the crazy eyes, and relating
to the sun and the sky, we could use a green screen to show the earth passing
round the sun with the characters in space.
7. Beach
Our plan is to go to Cromer beach and take the montage on the beach and pier. We
chose Cromer because it is a sandy beach which we can use to show some of the
aspects of the dream. We want the character to dig for treasure and we can use the
sand to hide it. As this is an on location shoot rather than in doors, artificial lighting
would be hard to carry and use, so we will have to rely on natural lighting. If when
it comes to filming, the lighting is bad, we will change the brightness, contrast and
saturation in the editing process.
Another beach location we could use is Southwold beach because of the brightly
coloured beach huts which could be a good background for some of our shots. Again
the light would be natural but we could edit the brightness to give the scene a
warmer, brighter feel.
8. Paint War
For the paint war, we would need a large area outside to perform the scene.
However it needs to be enclosed to show a lot of colour in one frame. We are
going to film it in a woods so it doesn't matter about mess because the paint and
chalk we are using is environmentally friendly and will just wash away without
causing any harm. We had two main forest locations: Thetford Forest and
Tyrrells Woods just outside of Long Stratton.
9. Thetford forest has many trees and is a big area so we can go deep into the
woods, however it takes longer to get there and we would need travel
arrangements to get there. Also we would have to walk quite far from a road
with all the camera equipment to get into a heavily wooded area.
