Cadmium By Sarah Crosby and Emily Kate Finn
Group, Period, and Number , Symbol Cadmium is in group 12 and period 5 on the periodic table. It is the 48th element on the periodic table of the elements and its symbol is Cd.
Who discovered it and when? Cadmium was discovered in 1817 by Frederick Strohmeyer, a German chemist. He discovered it while he was purifying some samples of zinc carbonate.
Quantities? Cadmium is found is small quantities. Cadmium is a rare element. It is found in minor components in most zinc ores. The amount of Cadmium has also been cut down because of its high toxicity and environmental concerns.
Uses and Value Cadmium is used mostly in batteries and jewelry. Other uses for Cadmium are coatings and plating as well as a stabilizer for plastic . It is used in the color tubes for televisions. It is used as a semi-conductor which means that cadmium can be bonded with other elements to form new elements.
