Corundum is an aluminum oxide mineral that occurs in a variety of colors, most notably as the gemstones ruby and sapphire. It forms as both igneous and metamorphic rocks and is found primarily in the United States in the states of Montana and North Carolina. Corundum has industrial uses as an abrasive and in making pennies due to its hardness.
