3. Locality development focuses on creating infrastructure
within a community to impact community wide problems.
After the death of Michael Brown, many buildings were
burnt down during the protests. A grant of $500,000 was
given to the city to demolish buildings and begin rebuilding.
This is a great example of community capacity building. The
community is using the grant (financial capital) to rebuild
businesses and eventually increase future capital.

5. A group of Ferguson residents launched a petition for a bill to
require police officers to wear body cameras, which were
donated. The group is hoping to gain 1,300 signatures to get
the issue on ballots of the municipal election ofApril of 2016.
The Ferguson community has shown a need to implement
body camera use on police officers. The petition goes about
things in a rational way to solve this issue. It’s still in the
process of using the rational problem solving strategy.
Because it has not been implemented yet it can not be
evaluated.

7. Around 150 protestors shut down five major intersections in
South St. Louis wanting justice for Michael Brown. They
stood in the crosswalks for 4.5 minutes representing the 4.5
hours that Michael Brown’s body was in the street. The
protest was organized by a group called Millennial Activists
United. This is a perfect example of social action because it is
using strength in numbers by gathering people who want the
same change as you do. In order to get that change, they
confronted the power structure by protesting for justice and
shutting down the highways.
