community health midwifery practice
5. INTRODUCTION
• Transcultural nursing concept was developed by madeleine Leininger
in the early 1960s. It is also called Culture Care Nursing. The
concept has greater impact on how to deal with patients of different
culture and cultural background.
• It focuses on the fact that different cultures have different caring
behaviors and different health and illness values, beliefs, and patterns
of behaviors.
6. DEFINITION OF TRANSCULTURAL
NURSING
• In 1995, Madeline Leininger defined transcultural
Nursing as “a substantive area of study and practiced
focused on comparative cultural care (caring) values,
beliefs, and practices of individuals or groups of similar
or different cultures to provide culture-specific and
universal nursing care practices in promoting health or
well-being or to help people face unfavorable human
conditions, illness, or death in culturally meaningful
ways.”
7. PRINCIPLES OF TRANSCULTURAL
NURSING
I. Develop cultural self awareness
Midwives must remember that their culture
often is sharply different from the culture of their
client.
They should recognize the value , belief and
practices that make up ones own culture.
8. II. Cultivate cultural sensitivity
Principle seeks to expand the nurses awareness of the
significance of culture on behavior.
Nurses beliefs and ways of doing thing frequently
conflict with those of their client . Cultural sensitivity
require recognizing that culturally based on values
,beliefs , and practices influence peoples health and
lifestyles and things need to be considered in plans for
service.
9. III. show respect and patience while learning about other
culture
Emphasizes the key behaviors for the midwives
to practice during the cultural learning process .
Attentive listening is a way to show respect and
to learn about a clients culture.
10. IV. Examine culturally derived health practices
Once the community health nurse has
assessed the culture of the client group,
cultural practices affecting the health of the
client group need to be examined
11. HOW WE CAN APPLY THE PRINCIPLES OF
TRANSCULTURAL NURSING TO COMMUNITY
HEALTH MIDWIFERY
It help midwives to give care to each and every patient regardless of
their cultural Practices, values and beliefs.
The theory emphasizes on using language and terms that patients
understand in order to enhance good communication and thereby
rendering comprehensive care.
The concept helps community health midwife to respect clients
cultural and religious beliefs that conflict with treatment plans,
however providing counselling on the harmful practices.
It also applies in recruitment of health professionals from diverse
culture or communities and not based on culture or religion.
12. It can also help midwives to counsel the clients on cultures that
influence their health negatively and adopt those which support their
well being.
