Religion
"Truth, in matters of religion, is simply the opinion that has survived," was a statement made by
Oscar Wilde. (Dawkins, pg. 222) In Richard Dawkins book, "The God Delusion," regards the
argument of the supernatural being in religion being not feasible. Richard Dawkins proposes his
argument "with rigor and wit, Dawkins eviscerates the arguments for religion and demonstrates the
supreme improbability of the existence of a supreme being." (Dawkins, 2008) Moreover, the author
uses vital assessments by allocating the origins of the religion, analysis of the Darwinian natural
selection and other metaphysicists that are the contemporary reasoning for phenomenal causes, and
the justification of God's existence. Therefore, the purpose of this ... Show more content on

A goal of this course is to develop an understanding of various religious systems and practices in the
lives of individuals and their societies."
In the first week of the course, we discussed a general introduction of religion by defining religion
and there were many ways to define religion. Spiro defined religion saying, "Religion is culturally
patterned interactions with culturally postulated superhuman beings." (Lecture 1, January3rd)
Furthermore, their own material can assess all cultures and we learn religion from our parents. Even
Richard Dawkins made the observation about how his wife wanted to leave the religion that her
parents raised her in and was to afraid to say anything. In addition, religion can be even shared with
like–minded people and theorist Durkheim suggested that religion is social and can give us a
personal identity. (Lecture one) In the book, Richard Dawkins pointed out how being a different
religion could be discouraging socially to people. He use the example of comedian Julia Sweeney's
from her parents finding out she was an atheist and had an upset reaction. "Not believing in God
they could just about take, but an atheist! An ATHEIST? (The mother's voice rose to a scream)
(Dawkins, pg.26). Richard Dawkins had made a note in his book that "...the very word 'atheist' has
been assiduously built up as a terrible and frightening label" (Dawkins, pg.26). Thus, the word
atheist was looked upon socially as

Pascal’s Wager vs. the Ontological Argument
Pascal's Wager vs. the Ontological Argument
Pascal's Wager was a groundbreaking theory posed by the French philosopher, mathematician, and
physicist Blaise Pascal. Pascal, who is said to be the father of modern probability, felt that that
religion should be approached as a gamble. It was one of the first efforts to incorporate the concept
of infinity. The wager stated that, even though the existence of God cannot be determined through
reason, one should wager as though God exists, because living accordingly, has essentially nothing
to lose and experiences can only be beneficial. Pascal's Wager consists of three arguments. The first
is the argument from super dominance. Pascal wrote: "God is, or He is not. But to which side shall

Additionally, he suggests that even if the chance of God existing was a slim one, the reward for
believing is an infinite one (Heaven). Therefore one can conclude that it would just be unwise to
doubt God because one could chance missing out on a substantially enormous reward. Though
Pascal's Wager seems to be a fairly simple concept it has earned many weaknesses, specifically nine.
Most of these stem from the bible, the first being whether believing God is sufficient for salvation
because the bible implies that salvation is dependent on good deeds, baptism, repentance, etc. There
is also the question that involves the matter of which God to believe in. Christians believe in Jesus,
God, and the Holy Spirit meanwhile Muslims believe in Allah–also, the Scriptures and the Qur'an
differ greatly. Additionally, one must ask if human belief matters at all, and whether heaven really is
the ultimate greatness. Perhaps the biggest arguments are whether one can make themselves believe
if they truly are doubtful, and how do we know God's criteria for salvation? Pascal, himself, would
ask whoever is reading his works to analyze his position and imagine themselves in it. If one truly
cannot decide the matter of God's existence, then a coin toss is the only remaining option. However,
placing a wager is an

The Problems Of Philosophy By Bertrand Russell, Ayn Rand,...
While the use and understanding of philosophy goes widely unknown by a majority of the
population today, a selective few have recognized its potential and utilized it to its fullest. In the
following essay, three prominent philosophers; Bertrand Russell, Ayn Rand, and Christopher
Hitchens. Each gives their insight to three important topics; the value of philosophy, using
philosophy and its value, and the importance of freedom of speech. All of whom will be discussed,
and agreement or disagreement will also be concluded and supported.
Bertrand Russell's essay "The Problems of Philosophy", is in most ways an argument for the
continuation of the practice of philosophy. To summarize Russell's argument, it is a vindication of
the practice of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While it is clear that Bertrand Russell wished for the continuation of the practice of philosophy, he
acknowledges most people have no idea what philosophy is, outside of the idea of a group of people
thinking about life. With this writing while giving some of the products that have come from
philosophy, he also warns that not all answers can be gained from the philosophy. While definite
answers can be gained through the sciences, philosophic study only raises more uncertainty.
Bertrand Russell supports his arguments with insight that comes from teaching, practicing, and
seeing the effects of philosophy both within himself and the people around him. While studying
philosophy Russell will only intensify the uncertainty about the world around us and the inner
workings of our mind. Likewise in support of Russell's argument, the study of sciences that is
aforementioned such as; Phycology, Astronomy, and Physics which were originally pondered by
philosophers has moved from philosophical theory to scientific study.
Likewise with the pursuit and study of philosophy, the likelihood of the student holding on to the
dogmatism, and predigests that is set forth by society and past experiences. Along with this the
aforementioned Practical Man Russell supports his argument with a description, " The practical man
who recognizes only material needs, who realizes men must have food for the body, but is

Does God Exist
Does God Exist The question of God's existence has lingered in the mind of man since the dawn of
religion. The simple fact that billions of people consider themselves to have some allegiance to a
deity means that this question deserves to be seriously considered. In this paper I will argue for the
sake that God does exist and the reasons why. I will include many of the arguments found in our
philosophy book and those covered in class as well as other subjects such as human suffering and
the reasons God chose to make the world as it is today, also including examples from life and the
movies we watched in class.
St. Thomas Aquinas had many arguments for the existence of God and one of those was the fifth
way. In the argument of the fifth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To exist in reality is greater than existing in the mind (idea). Therefore God, being that which
nothing greater can be conceived must exist in reality. All his premises support his conclusion,
creating a valid and sound argument proving that God must exist.
The atheist William Rowe uses an argument called the problem of evil that tries to prove the
nonexistence of God's however I can dismiss said argument. The problem of evil is the argument
that an all–powerful, all–knowing, and perfectly good God would not allow any–or certain kinds of–
evil or suffering to occur. The problem of evil contends that some known fact about evil is evidence
against the existence of God. This objection is typically raised against the Christian faith. The Bible
describes God as a god of love (1 John 4:16) and an all powerful god (Jeremiah 32:17). The
rationale behind this objection is, quite simply, if God is a loving god then he wouldn't want
mankind to suffer and if he is an all powerful god then he would have the means to stop suffering.
Therefore, the rationale follows, God cannot be both loving and all powerful and so the Christian
premise must be wrong. However, this is, in fact, an oversimplification of Christian theology. The
Bible itself acknowledges the existence of suffering and even suggests that suffering brings benefits:
In Romans 8:17 it is said that "We are heirs – heirs of God and co–heirs with Christ, if indeed we
share in his sufferings in order that we may also

The Parable Of The Sower By Octavia Butler
The Parable of the Sower, written by Octavia Butler, is considered a science fiction novel, classified
as dystopian. This novel depicts a post–apocalyptic world where the United States has fallen into
tremendous poverty. Crime, such as murder, rape, and theft, run rampant to the point where no one
is considered safe. The society in this novel is completely destroyed. The foundation has crumbled
socially, politically, and economically. The citizens are left to fend for themselves in, what is now, a
ruthless nation with just a hint of civilized communities. Our sensible and above all, brave
protagonist, Lauren Olamina, is the heart of the story. She is one of the few characters who can be
identified through several viewpoints. Lauren's persona, beliefs, as well as her actions allow her to
be classified through four different lenses such as classism, deism, fundamentalism, and, more
accurately, humanism.
Classism is a prejudice where stereotypes, intolerance, and judgments are placed upon people due to
their rank in a class system. When you think about it, classism is much like racism. However,
instead of race being the issue, the socioeconomic class is the primary target of abhorrence and bias.
Lauren, being our protagonist and heroine, is very much capable of exemplifying the ideology of
classism. In the beginning of the novel we are introduced to Lauren as a teenager who is growing up
in a gated, or walled, community outside of Los Angeles. Her community is literally

Why God Can Not Prevent Evil
Abstract/Thesis:
It is this learners goal for this paper to prove that God cannot prevent evil while preserving human
free will, that the existence of both evil and God is possible, that it is impossible for God to
constantly intervene and preserve the universe. Lastly, Christianity is the only practice providing
meaning of life. This learner will attempt to prove these positions by analyzing the writings of Tom
Morris, C.S. Lewis and William Lane Craig. Through this essay, this learner plans to bring a sound
philosophical theological understanding of how both God and man (His creation) function in theory
with each one another.
1. God Can Prevent Evil Actions and Preserve Human Freedom of Will Indeed, atheists will attempt
to argue that if there is a perfect being or a God, He could have prevented evil while preserving free
will. However, it is of vital importance that if preserving free will exists; then on the other hand,
prevention of evil must not exist. Free will is defined as the ability to act or the discretion to choose
in correspondence with an individual's feelings and choices with no outside interference such as
natural causality, predestined by divine will, or fate. An individual's loss of personal freedom places
hindrances on an outside force from determining an individual's behavior but contrarily not the
individual themselves.
In addition, despite the fact Almighty God can and does intervene in the life man through the use of

Introduction Friedrich Nietzsche believed God is dead, and he has based his theology around these
three words. Why does he believe God is dead? Friedrich Nietzsche could have called his theology
God does not exist and easily conveyed his message. Nietzsche purposefully chose these three
words to send a message to the Christian faith. Since the beginning of time the existence of God has
been questioned. Science has attempted to provide ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nietzsche was really upset with the Apostle Paul, whom he believed played a vital role in the death
of Jesus Christ on the cross. He saw the disbelief of Paul and the other disciples as a way for them to
invent a new doctrine that they called Christianity. Nietzsche was concerned with happiness as he
knew it to be on Earth. Maybe this all stems back to his childhood trauma. Either way, Nietzsche
never really presents any kind of evidence to substantiate his own claims.
Religion Believes God is Alive
Webster's definition of God is: "God, in the Christian, Jewish, and Moslem religions, the all–
powerful Being who made and rules the universe and is worshipped by man." "It is reckoned that
Islam is now professed by from 150 to 200 million people, nearly one–seventh of the population of
the globe." Islam believes that God is alive and His name is called "Allah." The self–proclaimed
prophet Mohammed was born in Mecca around the year 570. Some say Mohammed is the author of
the Koran, while others believe Allah is the author. Humanity may never know, but the Koran is
clear that there is a God and his name is Allah. The more radical views of Islam are on display daily
in the news. Suicide bombers, soldiers, and mercenaries, are all men who kill in the name of their
God. The Islamic religion proclaims that Allah is to be worshipped, and only Allah. They claim their
God is a forgiving and merciful God, but they murder innocent men, women, and children in his
name. Nietzsche

Atheism: Why Would Someone Be An Atheist?
What is atheism? Why would someone be an atheist? Why do people fear and dislike atheism?
Simply stated, atheism is the lack of belief in a god or gods. Granted, atheists are each individuals
and undoubtedly each of them prescribe [to] many different philosophies on life, politics and
morality as do Christians. However, though atheists may choose to gather collectively for whatever
purpose, unlike Christianity, atheism is not a belief system. An individual who identifies himself as
an atheist is merely stating that he does not believe in [the existence of] god or gods. Atheism, as
indicated by its name, is the opposite of theism which is belief in at least one god; to include
polytheism (belief in many or more than one god) and monotheism ... Show more content on

Therefore, the only reason one has to behave 'morally' is because god, the bible or Jesus says you
should. Moreover, the consequences of behaving in contradiction to Christian values or behaving
'immorally' involve punishment by god whether it be in this life or the after–life. This philosophy
sheds some light on why atheism is feared, despised and misunderstood as well as why atheists are
persecuted in America. If there is no god to answer to or no consequences for 'bad behavior', why
then, would anyone behave in a good moral fashion? What is to prevent deviant behavior, if there is
no god? These questions are the main basis for the Christian argument which maintains that atheists
are untrustworthy, immoral or amoral, social deviants and therefore lesser human beings. Some have
gone as far to say that atheists are unpatriotic, un–American and do not even have the right to be
acknowledged as citizens of the United States.
Even one of the greatest early western philosophers, Plato, expressed disgust for atheism, going as
far to say that those who commit impious acts may be 'suffering' from atheism– as if it were an
ailment or disease of some sort. Further, Plato considered atheism dangerous to society and argued
that atheists should be punished, even put to death in some cases. This view was also shared by St.
Thomas Aquinas, one of the most highly regarded theologians and western philosophers of the
Roman Catholic Church, who is quoted as

The Existence of God Essay
The Existence of God
What we call religious experience can differ greatly. Some reports exist of supernatural happenings
that it would be difficult to explain from a rational, scientific point of view. On the other hand, there
also exist the sorts of testimonies that simply seem to convey a feeling or a peace of oneness–
something which most of us, religious or not, may possibly relate to.
Firstly, I will consider the nature of an experience. Experience involves encounters which are
empirical (testable via senses). We draw non– empirical conclusions about many things and people–
that they have orange hair and are 5 feet tall, that they are lonely and confused. These conclusions
are mainly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is known through testimonies of the recipients of these experiences.
In categorising religious experiences is helpful to look at them as explicable through one of two
theories: the objectivist thesis or the subjectivist thesis.
The objectivist view supposes that there is some object or actual entity– such as god– which exists
independently of the experience, interaction which causes the experience itself. God is described as
numinous. This is a term often used to describe the experience in which God's separateness is
highlighted. This was put forward by Rudolf Otto in his book The Idea of the Holy. Otto religion
sprang from experience of the holly. Because the word numinous has many associations he used
numen, something which is wholly other than the natural world
An objectivist would argue that the religious experience is a proof of God's existence. However,
others have criticised the reliability of religious experiences. The English philosopher Thomas
Hobbes asked how it was possible to tell the differences between talking to God in a dream, and
dreaming about talking to God. The objectivist thesis is ultimately the most traditional viewpoint
since it views God as 'object'– that is, something which exists independently of us (such as a table or
another person). However,

The Existence Of Miracles By David Hume
When thinking about the claims that are made about the man on the tightrope there are several
lenses one can focus on. Through these varying views, the man on the tightrope is being inspected,
as well as his greater world and the fly that he sees disappear and reappear in front of him. This
shows there is an extensive variation of facts to be examined for and against the case of miracles.
Consequently, the authors included in the book, In Defense of Miracles, each considers different
important details as the defining factors in the debate of the existence of miracles. Of those, some
focus more heavily on the likelihood of miracles themselves such as Hume, others focus on the
existence of God such as Flew and Beck, and others focus on a particular example of a miracle such
as Craig.
Against Miracles: David Hume
David Hume argues against miracles and states that they are improbable because most are reported
by those who deceive others, the sensation of wonder that overrides the sense of reasoning, or
because they are inapplicable to our scientific culture today. Hume addresses that in essentially all
cases, the probability of a miracle truly happening, in comparison to any one of his listed reason, is
highly improbable. He does not implicitly state why miracles cannot occur.
In his first argument, Hume addresses the tendency of humans to deceive. In his view "...there is not
to be found, in all history, any miracle attested by a sufficient number of men..." (34). He believes

Religious Freedom And Separation Of Church And State Essay
After many frustrations and disputes arising out of the Commonwealth of Virginia, the termination
of Bill Establishing A Provision for Teachers of Christian Religion and the new Virginia Statue for
Religious Freedom mark a necessary and significant turn. The people of Virginia can finally savor
the religious freedom that they longed for. I shall hereby applaud the efforts pushed forth by the
honorable James Madison, Thomas Jefferson and so many others who shared the common stance on
religious freedom and separation of church and state. However, the achievement seemed provincial
when placed in the context of the larger United States. The new nation is at great stake because the
congregational church in Massachusetts disallows and persecutes any deviation from its core
religious interpretation; Jews are perceived as the enemies of the Christ by a large group of people;
and the Catholic minority in many states still suffers. Therefore, absolute religious freedom and the
separation of church and state shall be guaranteed in the new constitution in order to maintain the
supremacy of God over the state and purity of the God we trust, annihilate the violence, persecution
and tyrannies the God disdains, uphold the God–given natural rights we once fought for and
construct this blessed new nation to be free and prosperous.
God is the divine creator of the universe whereas civil laws are the derivative of humankind. In
other words, Christian Religion pre–existed any form of state or

Examples Of Teen Activism
We have all seen young people doing amazing things. They change the world and can inspire their
peers and even people twice their age. Have you ever wondered how they got started? Teen activism
is caused and is inspired through different means. Some teens were compelled to activism because
of inspiration from a parent. Others became active based on observation of an issue and its impact
on others and the world. Some teens became leaders because they were directly affected by an issue.
There are numerous examples of teen activists to illustrate how their activism originated.
The first reason that teen activism is initiated is when a parent is closely involved. This is
demonstrated by global education activist Malala Yousafzi and her father from Pakistan. Her father's
profession as a teacher clearly brought her to realize what a good education can do for any
individual. Moreover, Malala's father is quoted saying, "People ask me, what (is) special in my
mentorship which has made Malala so bold and so courageous and so vocal and poised? I tell them,
don't ask me what I did. Ask me what I did not do. I did not clip her wings, and that's all." Thus,
Malala demonstrates activism facilitated by a parent. Her father consistently motivated Malala ...

Characteristics Of Teen Activist
What qualities create a teen activist? Is it their utter devotion to their cause? Their sacrifice of
personal time and possibly their safety? Or, is it the way that they will work long hours on weekends
while others are relaxing or watching Tv? The answer is all of them. A teen activist is a young
person who will fight for a cause for the better of the community/world. They often make many
sacrifices and endanger themselves to others who disagree with their cause, yet they keep fighting.
These teens are willing to do whatever it takes for the benefit of people in need, and that's what
makes them so admirable.
Often times, when something is wrong, an activist cannot help but to respond. This longing to make
a difference is one of the key qualities in an influential activist. For example, a completely ordinary
teen named Alex Lin came across an article about e–waste in the Wall Street journal. In a video
interview he says "Every long journey starts with a short step" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=Weqt0N0vxH4). That is very true, because from then on, his interest and passion kept growing.
He spent hours collecting old electronics and managed to recycle 20,00 pound of e–waste that day.
He formed a team and devoted his time to get a law passed in his city banning e–waste dumping. He
still continues his journey and has built media centers in other parts of the world in his quest to
eliminate e–waste. But, just like many others, he won't stop there. He

Social Media: The Platform for New Activism It was the third semester of my freshman year in high

my mom asked me to cut on FOX 5 News. Now that the television was on, it gave me another
excuse to procrastinate even more. My eyes were glued to the television as reporters talked about
events that deserved no air time, when suddenly the segment began to air. The reporter said a black

later that day that the neighborhood watch volunteer followed and shot Martin because he looked
suspicious and up to no good, also known as black. I was so shocked. I mean, I knew that hate

The God, who keeps everything in perfect order, makes the sun rise and set. With the passage of
time, there also have been scriptures appearing that support the existence of God. Stories, events and
many supernatural occurrences that is beyond human's intellect. The Myths of Fire, Water, Earth and
Air were famous for their supernatural existence in the Roman Era. Before the Ancient Greek
religion turned into mythology, existence of God was well practiced by the Greek people. Homer, a
famous Greek writer, writes in the 'Odyssey' about how if man does not follow the God and believe
in them, then man will fall and be doomed. The Greeks were a very religious civilization. They
showed that one could believe in the gods without having solid, concrete proof. Looking at this
religion we can see that God does exist.
However, opinions vary from person to person. Some may believe in one God (theism), some may

Atheism And The Existence Of Deity
The Merriam–Webster Dictionary defines atheism as "a disbelief in the existence of deity." This
definition of atheism is broad and general. Most people only know that atheism is the lack of belief
in a god or gods, but they do not know what atheists do believe in or if atheists have faith in
anything. Also, atheism is often seen as the opposite of religion. Religion is the belief in a god or
gods, while atheism is the disbelief in the same. Does this view of atheism limit our understanding
of what it means to be an atheist? Is there more to being an atheist than what meets the eye? The
three scholarly articles I read on atheism had numerous differences and similarities. Each article
focused on a different idea or problem involving atheism, but there were numerous similarities
regarding the authors' opinions on atheism. The main difference in all three academic sources was
the main focus of each academic source. The first article focused on whether or not atheism should
be considered a religion and the evolution of the definition of religion (Davis 707–723). The second
article focused on the importance of the politics of atheism in our understanding of what it means to
be an atheist (LeDrew 464–469). Finally, the third article focuses on disproving Paul Ricoeur's
interpretation on atheism (Amini 7–13). Although all three articles are different, they present similar
and different ideas on how we, as a society, view atheism and what it means to be an atheist. The

The Existence Of God By Thomas Aquinas
Kaitlyn Yinger

Robert Evans
Intro to Philosophy
The Existence of God
Thomas Aquinas was a theologian that was a priest in the 1200's and wanted to prove that God
existed. He created many books and articles in his lifetime about God and things with the catholic
religion, but, his more famous book Summa Thelogia gave five arguments that God exists in
Articles II and III they are explained in detail. Below is my understanding of what he was saying the
works of two other man that had comments on this man. Through the arguments of these three man I
have came up with my own views and created an argument based on what they have to say.
In Article II Aquinas states why people think that God doesn't exist and goes on to destroy them
piece by piece. The first argument in Article II against God states that God does not existence
because it can not be demonstrated that he does in fact exist. He answers calmly and uses examples
from the Bible to help him with the answer and then he states what he thinks. Based on what he
stated in his example he went off of it and said that what he thinks. He states in Article II and I quote
"I reply, therefore, that God's existence, and those other things of this nature that can be known
through natural reason concerning God, as is said in Rom. I., are not articles of faith, but preambles
to these articles." (Article II). He is saying that Faith is not a given thing you have to knowledge and
understanding so that you can develop faith

Stevie Wonder Song Analysis
Andres Dominguez

Professor Eiland
Eng 103
Final Paper Singer and song writer Stevie Wonder, over the years has written many songs revolving
around political issues. Through different types of critical perspectives, one will be able to see the
meaning of his songs.
Looking at the lyrics of Stevie Wonder from a cultural perspective of atheists, one sees how atheists
would strongly disagree with the words that Stevie at times uses in his songs. To begin with, atheists
simply don't believe that there is a God or some kind of divine force that exists, "atheism has often
been defined in relation to Christianity as "denial" of belief in God" (Melton, 229). Whether atheists
believe in evolution or any other theory yet to be proven, one thing that is for ... Show more content

By hearing this, an atheist would argue the fact that this would be of discrimination against those
who do not believe in God. This lyric specifically for them, would mean that everybody but them
would have love and be unity because of the fact that they are not considered God's children given
that they do not even believe in Him. Through the eyes of atheists, one would be able to see that
certain statements said by Wonder himself would be considered contradictory. Wonder often asks for
peace and unity yet the fact that he basically assumes that everyone believes in God would mean
that what he says would mean nothing to atheists. Stevie being religious also means that not only
will he sometimes mention God but also, he will branch out with things like prayer. Because of this,
atheists would clearly stand against what Stevie Wonder says in some of his songs, "are you hearing,
praying, feeling what you say inside?" (Jesus Children of America,

New Atheism : A Non Religious Fundamentalist Group
In this paper, I will argue, new atheism could be identified as a non–religious fundamentalist group
with some definitions while with over definitions of fundamentalism making new atheism, not a
fundamentalist group.
Intro New Atheism is becoming more popular every year with more people openly joining the
movement. The term new atheist refers to the activist atheist organizations that are having recent
growth around the world. As well as people who argue that religion is dangerous and needs to come
to a halt (Cuthbertson, lecture 1, week 11). To some new atheism can be looked upon as a non–
religious organization and as to others is it not. The term fundamentalist is hard to define as there are
many interpretations of it but a basic one is, fundamentalist defends core principles of a particular
area or subject. In this paper, the main background for the definition of what fundamentalism is will
come for the work of Marty and his article Fundamentals of Fundamentalism. In Marty 's article, he
goes over twelve basic principles of fundamentalism; I will draw on these to support my evidence
throughout the paper. Even though that I will be drawing from Marty's work there are other
definitions and interpretations of fundamentalism that could contradict Marty's. With these different
interpretation of fundamentalism, it is up to an individual and how they interpret the different
definitions and then categorizes new atheism.

Analysis Of Jonathan Edwards 's ' Sinners ' The Hands Of...
According to the "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," Jonathan Edwards ', main purpose was to
scare the audience and tell them that they are doomed to spend their lives suffering from God 's
wrath in hell. His sermons were intended as a wake–up call for those who underplayed the majesty
of a holy God and overemphasized their own worthiness as a decent, hard–working, successful
citizens. Edwards believed strongly that only a genuine conversion experience should qualify a
person for church membership. Jonathan Edwards did a good job of persuading sinners to renounce
their sins and reconcile with themselves with God and their neighbor. For me the importance of the
sermon was that the tragedy of the natural man 's rejection of God is to fall into "The Hands of an
Angry God." He fiercely targets the "natural men" who are people who live their lives according to
strictly natural impulses, desires and plans. Edwards tells his parishioners that they only reason they
are alive and the only reason they woke up this morning is because God allowed them to.
During his sermon he gave effective ways on how a person should live their lives. He uses figurative
language such as similes to convey his message. A simile is a figure of speech involving the
comparison of one thing k, with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more
emphatic or vivid. Basically, it's a comparison of unlike things, sometimes using the words like or
as. Throughout the story Edwards's use of

The Nature Of God And Which Lense One Helps View Religion...
There are many different views about the nature of god and which lense one chooses to view
religion or spirituality. The nine that will be discussed are animism, polytheism, henotheism,
pantheism, religious dualism, deism, theism, atheism, and agnosticism. While some of these have
overlapping principles, they are each unique viewpoints as of the nature of god and are held by
different religions throughout the world today and in history. One of the first forms of religions was
animism, or the view that there are spirits in natural objects that account for its characteristics and
behavior. Since science did not exist the way it does now, people used animism as a way to explain
what they were seeing around them not only from a religious ... Show more content on

This is similar to animism because they believed in the power of each natural occurrence, however,
in animism the beliefs were independent of the idea of a god controlling the natural occurrence.
Polytheism arose after animism and reduced the number of gods who controlled not only events in
nature but also in government and politics. These gods were then politicized and helped to create
complex societies and governments which allowed for differences in classes and rankings within
society. Polytheism is most commonly known from Hinduism or greek mythology, which has many
deities all in control of different aspects of life. Henotheism is a type of polytheism that affirms the
existence of multiple gods but worships only one. This form of religion is seen in one path of
Hinduism referred to as bhakti yoga. In this religion, for example, they don 't deny the existence of
other gods, but believe that Krishna is the most important god that should be worshiped above all
others. Greek religions which worshiped Zeus primarily as their god is another example of
Henotheism. Taking an entirely different approach then Animism, polytheism, and henotheism is
Pantheism. This is the belief that god and the cosmos are one, and God is impersonal
(transpersonal). This belief states that every person, plant, animal, living and non–living thing, is
part of the one god. The impersonal or transpersonal aspect of this is what

Controversy Between the Existence of God Essay example
In "The Brothers Karamazov" by Fyodor Dostoevsky made a famous claim that establishes the link

Many religions have well–developed value frameworks that help adherents distinguish between
moral and immoral actions, serving as their guides in all the situations that require choosing the
model of behavior. The frameworks that regulate personal behavior, suing the categories of morality
and immorality, manifest themselves in the form of holy books, written and oral traditions and the
statements of religious leaders. The second reason lies in the fact that the scope of basic principles
of religious and secular morality is the same. For instance, the norms of moral behavior that are
contained in the Ten Commandments (e.g., the prohibition of murder, adultery and theft) are shared
both by deists and Atheists. Thirdly, religious people tend to think that God had created everything
in the world. Therefore, it is quite natural for them to think that God had created morality. Thus they
see morality and religion as either two inseparable notions or even the one that finds its roots in the
idea of God. The historically formed link between the morality and religion, the universal nature of
moral values and the doctrine of God's will as a source of everything that exists in the world can be
viewed as prerequisite for the formation of the point under study.
While one can believe that God creates morality, and the non–existence of God means that morality
does not exist, lots of questions

The Design Argument : The Theory Argument
The Design Argument In the past hundred years, a great debate has shaken the foundation religious
and scientific beliefs of society. Philosophers have been arguing about such a debate for hundreds of
years, but there does not seem to be any consensus on whether on the existence of god and the
universe. The ancient world never battled over such questions, rather they had accepted the fact that
the natural world was created by some being. However, as society made major advancements, the
question about god 's existence and his creation arose causing many debates and arguments to come
about. The design arguments are a popular example of such debates, which is very prevalent
amongst philosophers and society at large. "Simply put, the design argument, or the argument from
design, states that the order and purpose manifest in the works of nature indicate that they were
designed by an intelligent being" (Velasquez 251). The greatest proponent of the design argument
was philosopher William Paley, who formulated the argument. As a student of philosophy and avid
proponent of god 's existence, I support the design argument and philosopher William Paley. I would
like to argue against the beliefs of atheism and agnosticism while supporting the design argument as
a means of god 's existence. I believe that god is the creator of that which surrounds us and science
and nature is a means to prove the existence of god, not rebuttal it. Also I will support the design

An Argument Against Atheism Based On The Existence Of Evil
William Rowe tries to provide answers for three interrelated questions. "1) Are there arguments for
atheism based on the existence of evil that may rationally justify someone in being an atheist? 2)
How can a theist defend this position against the argument for atheism based on the existence of
evil? 3) What position should the informed atheist take concerning the rationality of their belief?"
Rowe makes sure the reader known what kind of evil is being dealt with or is being used in the
argument which is the central concept of the whole argument. He asserts that in order to develop the
argument for atheism based on the existence of evil; it is necessary to look at some sort of evil that
out world contains in great quantity. He states that this abundance of evil is the suffering humans
and animals.
Rowe sets out the problem by provide an argument that he believes can be used to rationally justify
someone being an atheist, William Rowe states the argument goes as follow:
"1. There exist instances of intense suffering which an omnipotent, omniscient being could have
prevented without thereby losing some greater good or permitting some evil equally bad or worse
2. An omniscient, wholly good being would prevent the occurrence of any intense suffering it could,
unless it could not do so without there by losing some greater good or permitting some evil equally
bad or worse
Therefore
3. There does not exist an omnipotent, omniscient, wholly good being."

MONOTHEISM'S THREE–PRONGED PROBLEM Monotheism also contains another essential
problem––one with implications for the future. The Western God of the Jewish–Christian–Islamic
tradition illustrates the core difficulty in monotheism, a philosophical conundrum that has been
called the theodicy problem. It is formulated as a trilemma and can best be illustrated this way:
Among the following three statements, it is logically possible to reconcile any two of them, but the
agreement of two implies that the third is false. The three statements are: 1. God is omnipotent. 2.
God loves us. 3. Evil exists. In the first instance, if God can do anything (create the universe, for
example), and if the universe contains natural and moral evils (hurricanes and Hitlers, for example),
then it would seem that God lacks compassion for the victims, especially when these victims are
innocent sufferers. Dostoyevsky's character Ivan in The Brothers Karamazov makes this case
eloquently when he tells the story of innocent children tortured by cruel soldiers in front of their
parents. How could a loving God allow this? The second case is the acceptance of a loving,
concerned God and the existence of evil in the world. This implies that even God cannot find a way
to eliminate evil, or at least reserve it as punishment only for those who deserve it. A God who
cannot do this is less than omnipotent. Finally, one can

The Existence Of God : Ontological Argument Essay
The question of the existence of God has troubled mankind for thousands of years. Many
philosophers and theologians have always searched for prove whether God exists. Many of them
constructed valid arguments which support theist believes. The existence of God was once never
denied, as His presence, His existence was evident in miracles and the people 's faith. But time and
the advancement of modern science have called God and His very nature into question. The Perfect
Being has become the source of much doubt and controversy. The faithful, believing people have
become unsure. It seems that we will never find the answer to this question, but I think that we
should take a look at one of the most famous arguments that prove the existence of God: Ontological
Argument. It was made in the eleventh century by Anselm who was one of the most important
Christian thinkers of his time. He proved that God exists by relying only on a priori reasoning. We
do not need any physical evidence of God to prove that he exist. We can prove it just by our ability
to thinking about it.

Similarities Between Descartes And Nietzsche 's View On...
Is there truly a God or something superior to us? Yes of course. Conversely, atheists are people who
don't believe that God or a divine being exists. For the most part, atheists have acknowledged that
the most reasonable conclusions are the ones that have the best evidential support. They have argued
that the evidence in favor of God's existence is too weak or the arguments in favor of concluding
there is no God are more compelling. Two ancient philosophers, Descartes and Nietzsche's have
different views on God's existence.
There has been many thinkers in history who have lacked a belief in God. Some ancient Greek
philosophers, such as Epicurus, obtained natural explanations for these superior miracles. Epicurus
was the first to question the compatibility of God with suffering. In contrast, Descartes proves God
's existence as an external reality and that ideas of perfection or infinity cannot come from oneself.
He explains that "I am a finite being and thus cannot generate these ideas on my own. I have also
never experienced perfection or infinity in the world, so they cannot come from experience, either".
God is a "perfect being".
Descartes indicates in the beginning of Meditation IV, "perfection" can know nothing of trickery,
deceit because deception is a mark of maliciousness and imperfection. If God is a perfect being and
perfection cannot know anything of lies or deceit then God cannot be deceptive. He claims that I
have both a finite intellect from God, which is

not only a rejection of ignorance, but also a rejection of their religious family and association of
religion itself, says Catherine L. and Caldwell–Harris who are published in the Department of

The Spiritual Worldview By Sigmund Freud
The Spiritual Worldview
Whether people choose to be a believer in God or an unbeliever, their original worldviews tend to
stem from the views of their family members. These worldviews are typically developed throughout
early childhood and are based on the premise of wanting to be accepted by someone (typically
family), this is classified as having extrinsic faith . However, as children grow up, they often begin
to express their individuality and question their worldviews. This is a demonstration of intrinsic
faith, which Sigmund Freud and C.S Lewis exemplify. Sigmund Freud and C.S Lewis are famous
theologians who's writings share a common parallelism, but did not share the same ideas for the
existence of God. Lewis stands behind the spiritual worldview and claims that one will only be truly
happy once they have developed a relationship with God. On the other hand, Freud believes in the
materialistic worldview, that the world is made up of what can be seen and that religion was only
created to give people wishful thinking. However, Lewis ultimately makes the strongest argument
for his worldview and effectively shows his audience the profound relationship that is made between
humans and God. First of all, Lewis at one point in time was an atheist, so it is clear why he would
have an explanation as to why the atheistic worldview is incorrect. One of the strongest arguments
that Lewis makes for his spiritual worldview is a concept that countless amount of unbelievers do

Arguments for the Existence of God Essay
Arguments for Existance of God
I have chosen the Christian religion to examine in this particular piece of coursework. Over the
centuries philosophers and theologians have put forward a number of different arguments to argue
the existence of God. The particular arguments I will be looking at are the Teleological Argument
and the Cosmological Argument.
====================================================================
William Paley put the Teleological argument forward. This argument is also known as the argument
of Design and Purpose. He believed that there was natural evidence in the world which supported
the idea of a divine designer whose aim was to produce such a supreme life form. ... Show more

Then if you next look at the whole world, how could something so big and so extremely
complicated just happen? This is just one argument that Christians might use to show there is a God.
However, an atheist (someone who doesn't believe in God) may look at the Teleological argument
with a reasonable response. The world has been around for millions and millions of years, therefore
it's possible that humans have adapted to the conditions in which we live in nowadays. An argument
always has two sides, and in this case, the side disagreeing with the Teleological argument is that
perhaps humans came into existence.
======================================================================
The other argument I will be looking at is called the Cosmological Argument. The Cosmological
Argument explains in detail on how event will cause another event or effect. By this meaning that if
one hundred dominoes are all lined up and they fell in line, domino number 100 would be the last to
fall and would fall because domino number 99 made it, and domino number 98 made domino
number 99 fall and so on. However, none of the dominoes would fall what so ever if domino
number 1 hadn't been knocked down by someone or something. This example is simplifying how
that everything must have an event and effect in history to this very day. This argument was by

Analysis Of The Article ' Rebellion '
Does God exists? If He does exist, why does he allow evil? Why doesn't He prevent bad things from
happening? Since the origin of the world many people have doubted their faiths. When it comes to
answering the question about God's existence people have been divided into three different groups;
theist, atheist, and agnostic. Theists are those who believe in God without doubting. Atheists do not
believe in God at all. Agnostics cannot make up their minds because they do not have enough
evidence from either side. In his article "Rebellion", F. Dostoevsky present Ivan who does not

might ask himself questions like, where is God?, why doesn't he interfer? Ivan said that he wants to
be present the day that Jesus come back to earth to judge dead and alive because he is curios and
therefore, he would like to know what are all the sacrifice of humans for. Ivan believes that Jesus
makes justice but, he can not simply understand why God doesn't have mercy of defenseless

According to religion we have to forgive our enemy as well as God forgives us. Ivan does not
support the idea that one must forgive the actions of someone who made us suffer. He uses the
example of a mother who saw her son been torn into pieces by the dog of the child tormentor. Ivan
claims that "if she wants to, let her forgive the tormentor her immeasurable maternal suffering; but
she has no right to forgive the suffering of her child who was torn into pieces"(Ivan, 245). Ivan
thinks that if the mother forgive the tormentor of her child, she would be paying an extremely high
price in order to satisfice God. He said that if it is the price he has to pay in order to go to God, then
he prefer not to pay it and give it

How Descartes Tries to Extricate Himself from the Skeptical Doubts He Has Raised
[All page references and quotations from the Meditations are taken from the 1995 Everyman
edition]
In the Meditations, Descartes embarks upon what Bernard Williams has called the project of 'Pure
Enquiry' to discover certain, indubitable foundations for knowledge. By subjecting everything to
doubt Descartes hoped to discover whatever was immune to it.
In order to best understand how and why Descartes builds his epistemological system up from his
foundations in the way that he does, it is helpful to gain an understanding of the intellectual
background of the 17th century that provided the motivation for his work.
We can discern ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Descartes was a child of the scientific revolution, but felt that until sceptical concerns were dealt
with, science would always have to contend with Montaigne and his cronies, standing on the
sidelines and laughing at science's pretenses to knowledge. Descartes' project, then, was to use the
tools of the sceptic to disprove the sceptical thesis by discovering certain knowledge that could
subsequently be used as the foundation of a new science, in which knowledge about the external
world was as certain as knowledge about mathematics. It was also to hammer the last nail into the
coffin of scholasticism, but also, arguably, to show that God still had a vital r_le to play in the
discovery of knowledge.
Meditation One describes Descartes' method of doubt. By its conclusion, Descartes has seemingly
subjected all of his beliefs to the strongest and most hyberbolic of doubts. He invokes the
nightmarish notion of an all–powerful, malign demon who could be deceiving him in the realm of
sensory experience, in his very understanding of matter and even in the simplest cases of
mathematical or logical truths. The doubts may be obscure, but this is the strength of the method –
the weakness of criteria for what makes a doubt reasonable means that almost anything can count as
a doubt, and therefore whatever withstands doubt must be

Religion

  • 1. Religion "Truth, in matters of religion, is simply the opinion that has survived," was a statement made by Oscar Wilde. (Dawkins, pg. 222) In Richard Dawkins book, "The God Delusion," regards the argument of the supernatural being in religion being not feasible. Richard Dawkins proposes his argument "with rigor and wit, Dawkins eviscerates the arguments for religion and demonstrates the supreme improbability of the existence of a supreme being." (Dawkins, 2008) Moreover, the author uses vital assessments by allocating the origins of the religion, analysis of the Darwinian natural selection and other metaphysicists that are the contemporary reasoning for phenomenal causes, and the justification of God's existence. Therefore, the purpose of this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A goal of this course is to develop an understanding of various religious systems and practices in the lives of individuals and their societies." In the first week of the course, we discussed a general introduction of religion by defining religion and there were many ways to define religion. Spiro defined religion saying, "Religion is culturally patterned interactions with culturally postulated superhuman beings." (Lecture 1, January3rd) Furthermore, their own material can assess all cultures and we learn religion from our parents. Even Richard Dawkins made the observation about how his wife wanted to leave the religion that her parents raised her in and was to afraid to say anything. In addition, religion can be even shared with like–minded people and theorist Durkheim suggested that religion is social and can give us a personal identity. (Lecture one) In the book, Richard Dawkins pointed out how being a different religion could be discouraging socially to people. He use the example of comedian Julia Sweeney's from her parents finding out she was an atheist and had an upset reaction. "Not believing in God they could just about take, but an atheist! An ATHEIST? (The mother's voice rose to a scream) (Dawkins, pg.26). Richard Dawkins had made a note in his book that "...the very word 'atheist' has been assiduously built up as a terrible and frightening label" (Dawkins, pg.26). • 3. Pascal’s Wager vs. the Ontological Argument Pascal's Wager vs. the Ontological Argument Pascal's Wager was a groundbreaking theory posed by the French philosopher, mathematician, and physicist Blaise Pascal. Pascal, who is said to be the father of modern probability, felt that that religion should be approached as a gamble. It was one of the first efforts to incorporate the concept of infinity. The wager stated that, even though the existence of God cannot be determined through reason, one should wager as though God exists, because living accordingly, has essentially nothing to lose and experiences can only be beneficial. Pascal's Wager consists of three arguments. The first is the argument from super dominance. Pascal wrote: "God is, or He is not. But to which side shall we ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Additionally, he suggests that even if the chance of God existing was a slim one, the reward for believing is an infinite one (Heaven). Therefore one can conclude that it would just be unwise to doubt God because one could chance missing out on a substantially enormous reward. Though Pascal's Wager seems to be a fairly simple concept it has earned many weaknesses, specifically nine. Most of these stem from the bible, the first being whether believing God is sufficient for salvation because the bible implies that salvation is dependent on good deeds, baptism, repentance, etc. There is also the question that involves the matter of which God to believe in. Christians believe in Jesus, God, and the Holy Spirit meanwhile Muslims believe in Allah–also, the Scriptures and the Qur'an differ greatly. Additionally, one must ask if human belief matters at all, and whether heaven really is the ultimate greatness. Perhaps the biggest arguments are whether one can make themselves believe if they truly are doubtful, and how do we know God's criteria for salvation? Pascal, himself, would ask whoever is reading his works to analyze his position and imagine themselves in it. If one truly cannot decide the matter of God's existence, then a coin toss is the only remaining option. However, placing a wager is an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Problems Of Philosophy By Bertrand Russell, Ayn Rand,... While the use and understanding of philosophy goes widely unknown by a majority of the population today, a selective few have recognized its potential and utilized it to its fullest. In the following essay, three prominent philosophers; Bertrand Russell, Ayn Rand, and Christopher Hitchens. Each gives their insight to three important topics; the value of philosophy, using philosophy and its value, and the importance of freedom of speech. All of whom will be discussed, and agreement or disagreement will also be concluded and supported. Bertrand Russell's essay "The Problems of Philosophy", is in most ways an argument for the continuation of the practice of philosophy. While it is clear that Bertrand Russell wished for the continuation of the practice of philosophy, he acknowledges most people have no idea what philosophy is, outside of the idea of a group of people thinking about life. With this writing while giving some of the products that have come from philosophy, he also warns that not all answers can be gained from the philosophy. While definite answers can be gained through the sciences, philosophic study only raises more uncertainty. Bertrand Russell supports his arguments with insight that comes from teaching, practicing, and seeing the effects of philosophy both within himself and the people around him. While studying philosophy Russell will only intensify the uncertainty about the world around us and the inner workings of our mind. Likewise in support of Russell's argument, the study of sciences that is aforementioned such as; Phycology, Astronomy, and Physics which were originally pondered by philosophers has moved from philosophical theory to scientific study. Likewise with the pursuit and study of philosophy, the likelihood of the student holding on to the dogmatism, and predigests that is set forth by society and past experiences. Along with this the aforementioned Practical Man Russell supports his argument with a description, " The practical man who recognizes only material needs, who realizes men must have food for the body, but is ... • 7. Does God Exist Does God Exist The question of God's existence has lingered in the mind of man since the dawn of religion. The simple fact that billions of people consider themselves to have some allegiance to a deity means that this question deserves to be seriously considered. In this paper I will argue for the sake that God does exist and the reasons why. I will include many of the arguments found in our philosophy book and those covered in class as well as other subjects such as human suffering and the reasons God chose to make the world as it is today, also including examples from life and the movies we watched in class. St. Thomas Aquinas had many arguments for the existence of God and one of those was the fifth way. In the argument of the fifth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To exist in reality is greater than existing in the mind (idea). Therefore God, being that which nothing greater can be conceived must exist in reality. All his premises support his conclusion, creating a valid and sound argument proving that God must exist. The atheist William Rowe uses an argument called the problem of evil that tries to prove the nonexistence of God's however I can dismiss said argument. The problem of evil is the argument that an all–powerful, all–knowing, and perfectly good God would not allow any–or certain kinds of– evil or suffering to occur. The problem of evil contends that some known fact about evil is evidence against the existence of God. This objection is typically raised against the Christian faith. The Bible describes God as a god of love (1 John 4:16) and an all powerful god (Jeremiah 32:17). The rationale behind this objection is, quite simply, if God is a loving god then he wouldn't want mankind to suffer and if he is an all powerful god then he would have the means to stop suffering. Therefore, the rationale follows, God cannot be both loving and all powerful and so the Christian premise must be wrong. However, this is, in fact, an oversimplification of Christian theology. The Bible itself acknowledges the existence of suffering and even suggests that suffering brings benefits: In Romans 8:17 it is said that "We are heirs – heirs of God and co–heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also ... • 9. The Parable Of The Sower By Octavia Butler The Parable of the Sower, written by Octavia Butler, is considered a science fiction novel, classified as dystopian. This novel depicts a post–apocalyptic world where the United States has fallen into tremendous poverty. Crime, such as murder, rape, and theft, run rampant to the point where no one is considered safe. The society in this novel is completely destroyed. The foundation has crumbled socially, politically, and economically. The citizens are left to fend for themselves in, what is now, a ruthless nation with just a hint of civilized communities. Our sensible and above all, brave protagonist, Lauren Olamina, is the heart of the story. She is one of the few characters who can be identified through several viewpoints. Lauren's persona, beliefs, as well as her actions allow her to be classified through four different lenses such as classism, deism, fundamentalism, and, more accurately, humanism. Classism is a prejudice where stereotypes, intolerance, and judgments are placed upon people due to their rank in a class system. When you think about it, classism is much like racism. However, instead of race being the issue, the socioeconomic class is the primary target of abhorrence and bias. Lauren, being our protagonist and heroine, is very much capable of exemplifying the ideology of classism. In the beginning of the novel we are introduced to Lauren as a teenager who is growing up in a gated, or walled, community outside of Los Angeles. Her community is literally ... • 11. Why God Can Not Prevent Evil Abstract/Thesis: It is this learners goal for this paper to prove that God cannot prevent evil while preserving human free will, that the existence of both evil and God is possible, that it is impossible for God to constantly intervene and preserve the universe. Lastly, Christianity is the only practice providing meaning of life. This learner will attempt to prove these positions by analyzing the writings of Tom Morris, C.S. Lewis and William Lane Craig. Through this essay, this learner plans to bring a sound philosophical theological understanding of how both God and man (His creation) function in theory with each one another. 1. God Can Prevent Evil Actions and Preserve Human Freedom of Will Indeed, atheists will attempt to argue that if there is a perfect being or a God, He could have prevented evil while preserving free will. However, it is of vital importance that if preserving free will exists; then on the other hand, prevention of evil must not exist. Free will is defined as the ability to act or the discretion to choose in correspondence with an individual's feelings and choices with no outside interference such as natural causality, predestined by divine will, or fate. An individual's loss of personal freedom places hindrances on an outside force from determining an individual's behavior but contrarily not the individual themselves. In addition, despite the fact Almighty God can and does intervene in the life man through the use of divine ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

LIBERTY UNIVERSITY BAPTIST THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY "A Select Issue in Contemporary Theology: God–Is–Dead Theology" Submitted to Dr. Eunice Abogunrin In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the completion of THEO 510–B05 Survey of Theology By John Kohler Whitley October 5, 2014 Introduction Friedrich Nietzsche believed God is dead, and he has based his theology around these three words. Why does he believe God is dead? Friedrich Nietzsche could have called his theology God does not exist and easily conveyed his message. Nietzsche purposefully chose these three words to send a message to the Christian faith. Since the beginning of time the existence of God has been questioned. Science has attempted to provide ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nietzsche was really upset with the Apostle Paul, whom he believed played a vital role in the death of Jesus Christ on the cross. He saw the disbelief of Paul and the other disciples as a way for them to invent a new doctrine that they called Christianity. Nietzsche was concerned with happiness as he knew it to be on Earth. Maybe this all stems back to his childhood trauma. Either way, Nietzsche never really presents any kind of evidence to substantiate his own claims. Religion Believes God is Alive Webster's definition of God is: "God, in the Christian, Jewish, and Moslem religions, the all– powerful Being who made and rules the universe and is worshipped by man." "It is reckoned that Islam is now professed by from 150 to 200 million people, nearly one–seventh of the population of the globe." Islam believes that God is alive and His name is called "Allah." The self–proclaimed prophet Mohammed was born in Mecca around the year 570. Some say Mohammed is the author of the Koran, while others believe Allah is the author. Humanity may never know, but the Koran is clear that there is a God and his name is Allah. The more radical views of Islam are on display daily in the news. Suicide bombers, soldiers, and mercenaries, are all men who kill in the name of their God. The Islamic religion proclaims that Allah is to be worshipped, and only Allah. They claim their

  • 16. Atheism: Why Would Someone Be An Atheist? What is atheism? Why would someone be an atheist? Why do people fear and dislike atheism? Simply stated, atheism is the lack of belief in a god or gods. Granted, atheists are each individuals and undoubtedly each of them prescribe [to] many different philosophies on life, politics and morality as do Christians. However, though atheists may choose to gather collectively for whatever purpose, unlike Christianity, atheism is not a belief system. An individual who identifies himself as an atheist is merely stating that he does not believe in [the existence of] god or gods. Atheism, as indicated by its name, is the opposite of theism which is belief in at least one god; to include polytheism (belief in many or more than one god) and monotheism ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, the only reason one has to behave 'morally' is because god, the bible or Jesus says you should. Moreover, the consequences of behaving in contradiction to Christian values or behaving 'immorally' involve punishment by god whether it be in this life or the after–life. This philosophy sheds some light on why atheism is feared, despised and misunderstood as well as why atheists are persecuted in America. If there is no god to answer to or no consequences for 'bad behavior', why then, would anyone behave in a good moral fashion? What is to prevent deviant behavior, if there is no god? These questions are the main basis for the Christian argument which maintains that atheists are untrustworthy, immoral or amoral, social deviants and therefore lesser human beings. Some have gone as far to say that atheists are unpatriotic, un–American and do not even have the right to be acknowledged as citizens of the United States. Even one of the greatest early western philosophers, Plato, expressed disgust for atheism, going as far to say that those who commit impious acts may be 'suffering' from atheism– as if it were an ailment or disease of some sort. Further, Plato considered atheism dangerous to society and argued that atheists should be punished, even put to death in some cases. This view was also shared by St. Thomas Aquinas, one of the most highly regarded theologians and western philosophers of the Roman Catholic Church, who is quoted as ... • 18. The Existence of God Essay The Existence of God What we call religious experience can differ greatly. Some reports exist of supernatural happenings that it would be difficult to explain from a rational, scientific point of view. On the other hand, there also exist the sorts of testimonies that simply seem to convey a feeling or a peace of oneness– something which most of us, religious or not, may possibly relate to. Firstly, I will consider the nature of an experience. Experience involves encounters which are empirical (testable via senses). We draw non– empirical conclusions about many things and people– that they have orange hair and are 5 feet tall, that they are lonely and confused. These conclusions are mainly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is known through testimonies of the recipients of these experiences. In categorising religious experiences is helpful to look at them as explicable through one of two theories: the objectivist thesis or the subjectivist thesis. The objectivist view supposes that there is some object or actual entity– such as god– which exists independently of the experience, interaction which causes the experience itself. God is described as numinous. This is a term often used to describe the experience in which God's separateness is highlighted. This was put forward by Rudolf Otto in his book The Idea of the Holy. Otto religion sprang from experience of the holly. Because the word numinous has many associations he used numen, something which is wholly other than the natural world An objectivist would argue that the religious experience is a proof of God's existence. However, others have criticised the reliability of religious experiences. The English philosopher Thomas Hobbes asked how it was possible to tell the differences between talking to God in a dream, and dreaming about talking to God. The objectivist thesis is ultimately the most traditional viewpoint since it views God as 'object'– that is, something which exists independently of us (such as a table or another person). • 20. The Existence Of Miracles By David Hume When thinking about the claims that are made about the man on the tightrope there are several lenses one can focus on. Through these varying views, the man on the tightrope is being inspected, as well as his greater world and the fly that he sees disappear and reappear in front of him. This shows there is an extensive variation of facts to be examined for and against the case of miracles. Consequently, the authors included in the book, In Defense of Miracles, each considers different important details as the defining factors in the debate of the existence of miracles. Of those, some focus more heavily on the likelihood of miracles themselves such as Hume, others focus on the existence of God such as Flew and Beck, and others focus on a particular example of a miracle such as Craig. Against Miracles: David Hume David Hume argues against miracles and states that they are improbable because most are reported by those who deceive others, the sensation of wonder that overrides the sense of reasoning, or because they are inapplicable to our scientific culture today. Hume addresses that in essentially all cases, the probability of a miracle truly happening, in comparison to any one of his listed reason, is highly improbable. He does not implicitly state why miracles cannot occur. In his first argument, Hume addresses the tendency of humans to deceive. In his view "...there is not to be found, in all history, any miracle attested by a sufficient number of men..." (34). He believes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 22. Religious Freedom And Separation Of Church And State Essay After many frustrations and disputes arising out of the Commonwealth of Virginia, the termination of Bill Establishing A Provision for Teachers of Christian Religion and the new Virginia Statue for Religious Freedom mark a necessary and significant turn. The people of Virginia can finally savor the religious freedom that they longed for. I shall hereby applaud the efforts pushed forth by the honorable James Madison, Thomas Jefferson and so many others who shared the common stance on religious freedom and separation of church and state. However, the achievement seemed provincial when placed in the context of the larger United States. The new nation is at great stake because the congregational church in Massachusetts disallows and persecutes any deviation from its core religious interpretation; Jews are perceived as the enemies of the Christ by a large group of people; and the Catholic minority in many states still suffers. Therefore, absolute religious freedom and the separation of church and state shall be guaranteed in the new constitution in order to maintain the supremacy of God over the state and purity of the God we trust, annihilate the violence, persecution and tyrannies the God disdains, uphold the God–given natural rights we once fought for and construct this blessed new nation to be free and prosperous. God is the divine creator of the universe whereas civil laws are the derivative of humankind. In other words, Christian Religion pre–existed any form of state or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 24. Examples Of Teen Activism We have all seen young people doing amazing things. They change the world and can inspire their peers and even people twice their age. Have you ever wondered how they got started? Teen activism is caused and is inspired through different means. Some teens were compelled to activism because of inspiration from a parent. Others became active based on observation of an issue and its impact on others and the world. Some teens became leaders because they were directly affected by an issue. There are numerous examples of teen activists to illustrate how their activism originated. The first reason that teen activism is initiated is when a parent is closely involved. This is demonstrated by global education activist Malala Yousafzi and her father from Pakistan. Her father's profession as a teacher clearly brought her to realize what a good education can do for any individual. Moreover, Malala's father is quoted saying, "People ask me, what (is) special in my mentorship which has made Malala so bold and so courageous and so vocal and poised? I tell them, don't ask me what I did. Ask me what I did not do. I did not clip her wings, and that's all." Thus, Malala demonstrates activism facilitated by a parent. • 26. Characteristics Of Teen Activist What qualities create a teen activist? Is it their utter devotion to their cause? Their sacrifice of personal time and possibly their safety? Or, is it the way that they will work long hours on weekends while others are relaxing or watching Tv? The answer is all of them. A teen activist is a young person who will fight for a cause for the better of the community/world. They often make many sacrifices and endanger themselves to others who disagree with their cause, yet they keep fighting. These teens are willing to do whatever it takes for the benefit of people in need, and that's what makes them so admirable. Often times, when something is wrong, an activist cannot help but to respond. This longing to make a difference is one of the key qualities in an influential activist. For example, a completely ordinary teen named Alex Lin came across an article about e–waste in the Wall Street journal. In a video interview he says "Every long journey starts with a short step" (https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=Weqt0N0vxH4). That is very true, because from then on, his interest and passion kept growing. He spent hours collecting old electronics and managed to recycle 20,00 pound of e–waste that day. He formed a team and devoted his time to get a law passed in his city banning e–waste dumping. He still continues his journey and has built media centers in other parts of the world in his quest to eliminate e–waste. But, just like many others, he won't stop there. He ... I was doing my homework in preparation for another dreadful Monday at school. I was scrolling through my Instagram timeline instead of finishing my homework when my mom asked me to cut on FOX 5 News. Now that the television was on, it gave me another excuse to procrastinate even more. My eyes were glued to the television as reporters talked about events that deserved no air time, when suddenly the segment began to air. The reporter said a black teen, named Trayvon Martin had been shot and killed in Stanford, Florida by a neighborhood watch volunteer. She said the story was still developing and information would be coming. It was relayed later that day that the neighborhood watch volunteer followed and shot Martin because he looked suspicious and up to no good, also known as black. I was so shocked. • 36. Atheism And The Existence Of Deity The Merriam–Webster Dictionary defines atheism as "a disbelief in the existence of deity." This definition of atheism is broad and general. Most people only know that atheism is the lack of belief in a god or gods, but they do not know what atheists do believe in or if atheists have faith in anything. Also, atheism is often seen as the opposite of religion. Religion is the belief in a god or gods, while atheism is the disbelief in the same. Does this view of atheism limit our understanding of what it means to be an atheist? Is there more to being an atheist than what meets the eye? The three scholarly articles I read on atheism had numerous differences and similarities. Each article focused on a different idea or problem involving atheism, but there were numerous similarities regarding the authors' opinions on atheism. The main difference in all three academic sources was the main focus of each academic source. The first article focused on whether or not atheism should be considered a religion and the evolution of the definition of religion (Davis 707–723). The second article focused on the importance of the politics of atheism in our understanding of what it means to be an atheist (LeDrew 464–469). Finally, the third article focuses on disproving Paul Ricoeur's interpretation on atheism (Amini 7–13). Although all three articles are different, they present similar and different ideas on how we, as a society, view atheism and what it means to be an atheist. The first and ... New Atheism : A Non Religious Fundamentalist Group In this paper, I will argue, new atheism could be identified as a non–religious fundamentalist group with some definitions while with over definitions of fundamentalism making new atheism, not a fundamentalist group. Intro New Atheism is becoming more popular every year with more people openly joining the movement. The term new atheist refers to the activist atheist organizations that are having recent growth around the world. As well as people who argue that religion is dangerous and needs to come to a halt (Cuthbertson, lecture 1, week 11). To some new atheism can be looked upon as a non– religious organization and as to others is it not. The term fundamentalist is hard to define as there are many interpretations of it but a basic one is, fundamentalist defends core principles of a particular area or subject. In this paper, the main background for the definition of what fundamentalism is will come for the work of Marty and his article Fundamentals of Fundamentalism. In Marty 's article, he goes over twelve basic principles of fundamentalism; I will draw on these to support my evidence throughout the paper. Even though that I will be drawing from Marty's work there are other definitions and interpretations of fundamentalism that could contradict Marty's. With these different interpretation of fundamentalism, it is up to an individual and how they interpret the different definitions and then categorizes new atheism. According to the "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," Jonathan Edwards ', main purpose was to scare the audience and tell them that they are doomed to spend their lives suffering from God 's wrath in hell. His sermons were intended as a wake–up call for those who underplayed the majesty of a holy God and overemphasized their own worthiness as a decent, hard–working, successful citizens. Edwards believed strongly that only a genuine conversion experience should qualify a person for church membership. Jonathan Edwards did a good job of persuading sinners to renounce their sins and reconcile with themselves with God and their neighbor. For me the importance of the sermon was that the tragedy of the natural man 's rejection of God is to fall into "The Hands of an Angry God." He fiercely targets the "natural men" who are people who live their lives according to strictly natural impulses, desires and plans. Edwards tells his parishioners that they only reason they are alive and the only reason they woke up this morning is because God allowed them to. During his sermon he gave effective ways on how a person should live their lives. He uses figurative language such as similes to convey his message. A simile is a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing k, with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid. The nine that will be discussed are animism, polytheism, henotheism, pantheism, religious dualism, deism, theism, atheism, and agnosticism. While some of these have overlapping principles, they are each unique viewpoints as of the nature of god and are held by different religions throughout the world today and in history. These gods were then politicized and helped to create complex societies and governments which allowed for differences in classes and rankings within society. Polytheism is most commonly known from Hinduism or greek mythology, which has many deities all in control of different aspects of life. Henotheism is a type of polytheism that affirms the existence of multiple gods but worships only one. This form of religion is seen in one path of Hinduism referred to as bhakti yoga. In this religion, for example, they don 't deny the existence of other gods, but believe that Krishna is the most important god that should be worshiped above all others. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many religions have well–developed value frameworks that help adherents distinguish between moral and immoral actions, serving as their guides in all the situations that require choosing the model of behavior. The frameworks that regulate personal behavior, suing the categories of morality and immorality, manifest themselves in the form of holy books, written and oral traditions and the statements of religious leaders. The second reason lies in the fact that the scope of basic principles of religious and secular morality is the same. For instance, the norms of moral behavior that are contained in the Ten Commandments (e.g., the prohibition of murder, adultery and theft) are shared both by deists and Atheists. Thirdly, religious people tend to think that God had created everything in the world. Therefore, it is quite natural for them to think that God had created morality. Thus they see morality and religion as either two inseparable notions or even the one that finds its roots in the idea of God. Philosophers have been arguing about such a debate for hundreds of years, but there does not seem to be any consensus on whether on the existence of god and the universe. The ancient world never battled over such questions, rather they had accepted the fact that the natural world was created by some being. However, as society made major advancements, the question about god 's existence and his creation arose causing many debates and arguments to come about. The design arguments are a popular example of such debates, which is very prevalent amongst philosophers and society at large. • 54. An Argument Against Atheism Based On The Existence Of Evil William Rowe tries to provide answers for three interrelated questions. "1) Are there arguments for atheism based on the existence of evil that may rationally justify someone in being an atheist? 2) How can a theist defend this position against the argument for atheism based on the existence of evil? 3) What position should the informed atheist take concerning the rationality of their belief?" Rowe makes sure the reader known what kind of evil is being dealt with or is being used in the argument which is the central concept of the whole argument. He asserts that in order to develop the argument for atheism based on the existence of evil; it is necessary to look at some sort of evil that out world contains in great quantity. He states that this abundance of evil is the suffering humans and animals. Rowe sets out the problem by provide an argument that he believes can be used to rationally justify someone being an atheist, William Rowe states the argument goes as follow: "1. There exist instances of intense suffering which an omnipotent, omniscient being could have prevented without thereby losing some greater good or permitting some evil equally bad or worse 2. An omniscient, wholly good being would prevent the occurrence of any intense suffering it could, unless it could not do so without there by losing some greater good or permitting some evil equally bad or worse Therefore 3. Polytheism Polytheism Reproduced, with permission, from THE FUTURIST, Published by the World Future Society, 7910 Woodmont Avenue, Suite 450, Bethesda, Maryland 20814 Toward the end of the nineteenth century, the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche wrote a fictional account of a madman who went about the town proclaiming that "God is dead." Nietzsche's story is illustrative of a wave of atheism that spread through the intellectual circles of Europe in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, but that never caught on in society at large. The idea of the divine demise, however, did not die: A movement by theologians resurrected Nietzsche's thesis in the 1960s, amidst the other forms of radical thinking that characterized that decade. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... MONOTHEISM'S THREE–PRONGED PROBLEM Monotheism also contains another essential problem––one with implications for the future. The Western God of the Jewish–Christian–Islamic tradition illustrates the core difficulty in monotheism, a philosophical conundrum that has been called the theodicy problem. It is formulated as a trilemma and can best be illustrated this way: Among the following three statements, it is logically possible to reconcile any two of them, but the agreement of two implies that the third is false. The three statements are: 1. God is omnipotent. 2. God loves us. 3. Evil exists. In the first instance, if God can do anything (create the universe, for example), and if the universe contains natural and moral evils (hurricanes and Hitlers, for example), then it would seem that God lacks compassion for the victims, especially when these victims are innocent sufferers. Dostoyevsky's character Ivan in The Brothers Karamazov makes this case eloquently when he tells the story of innocent children tortured by cruel soldiers in front of their parents. How could a loving God allow this? The second case is the acceptance of a loving, concerned God and the existence of evil in the world. This implies that even God cannot find a way to eliminate evil, or at least reserve it as punishment only for those who deserve it. A God who cannot do this is less than omnipotent. • 58. The Existence Of God : Ontological Argument Essay The question of the existence of God has troubled mankind for thousands of years. Many philosophers and theologians have always searched for prove whether God exists. Many of them constructed valid arguments which support theist believes. The existence of God was once never denied, as His presence, His existence was evident in miracles and the people 's faith. But time and the advancement of modern science have called God and His very nature into question. The Perfect Being has become the source of much doubt and controversy. The faithful, believing people have become unsure. It seems that we will never find the answer to this question, but I think that we should take a look at one of the most famous arguments that prove the existence of God: Ontological Argument. It was made in the eleventh century by Anselm who was one of the most important Christian thinkers of his time. He proved that God exists by relying only on a priori reasoning. We do not need any physical evidence of God to prove that he exist. We can prove it just by our ability to thinking about it. .Relevant theories Ontological Argument is one of many arguments that was constructed to prove the existence of God. This question has been around for a very long time, so there are lots of argument about this topic. Some of them are good, some of them are not. But, I would like to focus on Cosmological Argument and Argument from Contingency. Cosmological argument This argument was constructed by Aquinas to prove ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 60. Similarities Between Descartes And Nietzsche 's View On... Is there truly a God or something superior to us? Yes of course. Conversely, atheists are people who don't believe that God or a divine being exists. For the most part, atheists have acknowledged that the most reasonable conclusions are the ones that have the best evidential support. They have argued that the evidence in favor of God's existence is too weak or the arguments in favor of concluding there is no God are more compelling. Two ancient philosophers, Descartes and Nietzsche's have different views on God's existence. There has been many thinkers in history who have lacked a belief in God. Some ancient Greek philosophers, such as Epicurus, obtained natural explanations for these superior miracles. Epicurus was the first to question the compatibility of God with suffering. In contrast, Descartes proves God 's existence as an external reality and that ideas of perfection or infinity cannot come from oneself. He explains that "I am a finite being and thus cannot generate these ideas on my own. I have also never experienced perfection or infinity in the world, so they cannot come from experience, either". God is a "perfect being". Descartes indicates in the beginning of Meditation IV, "perfection" can know nothing of trickery, deceit because deception is a mark of maliciousness and imperfection. If God is a perfect being and perfection cannot know anything of lies or deceit then God cannot be deceptive. He claims that I have both a finite intellect from God, which is ... • 68. The Spiritual Worldview By Sigmund Freud The Spiritual Worldview Whether people choose to be a believer in God or an unbeliever, their original worldviews tend to stem from the views of their family members. These worldviews are typically developed throughout early childhood and are based on the premise of wanting to be accepted by someone (typically family), this is classified as having extrinsic faith . However, as children grow up, they often begin to express their individuality and question their worldviews. This is a demonstration of intrinsic faith, which Sigmund Freud and C.S Lewis exemplify. Sigmund Freud and C.S Lewis are famous theologians who's writings share a common parallelism, but did not share the same ideas for the existence of God. Lewis stands behind the spiritual worldview and claims that one will only be truly happy once they have developed a relationship with God. On the other hand, Freud believes in the materialistic worldview, that the world is made up of what can be seen and that religion was only created to give people wishful thinking. However, Lewis ultimately makes the strongest argument for his worldview and effectively shows his audience the profound relationship that is made between humans and God. First of all, Lewis at one point in time was an atheist, so it is clear why he would have an explanation as to why the atheistic worldview is incorrect. One of the strongest arguments that Lewis makes for his spiritual worldview is a concept that countless amount of unbelievers do not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 70. Arguments for the Existence of God Essay Arguments for Existance of God I have chosen the Christian religion to examine in this particular piece of coursework. Over the centuries philosophers and theologians have put forward a number of different arguments to argue the existence of God. The particular arguments I will be looking at are the Teleological Argument and the Cosmological Argument. ==================================================================== William Paley put the Teleological argument forward. This argument is also known as the argument of Design and Purpose. He believed that there was natural evidence in the world which supported the idea of a divine designer whose aim was to produce such a supreme life form. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Then if you next look at the whole world, how could something so big and so extremely complicated just happen? This is just one argument that Christians might use to show there is a God. However, an atheist (someone who doesn't believe in God) may look at the Teleological argument with a reasonable response. The world has been around for millions and millions of years, therefore it's possible that humans have adapted to the conditions in which we live in nowadays. An argument always has two sides, and in this case, the side disagreeing with the Teleological argument is that perhaps humans came into existence. ====================================================================== The other argument I will be looking at is called the Cosmological Argument. The Cosmological Argument explains in detail on how event will cause another event or effect. By this meaning that if one hundred dominoes are all lined up and they fell in line, domino number 100 would be the last to fall and would fall because domino number 99 made it, and domino number 98 made domino number 99 fall and so on. However, none of the dominoes would fall what so ever if domino number 1 hadn't been knocked down by someone or something. This example is simplifying how that everything must have an event and effect in history to this very day. This argument was by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Since the origin of the world many people have doubted their faiths. When it comes to answering the question about God's existence people have been divided into three different groups; theist, atheist, and agnostic. Theists are those who believe in God without doubting. Atheists do not believe in God at all. Agnostics cannot make up their minds because they do not have enough evidence from either side. Ivan said that he wants to be present the day that Jesus come back to earth to judge dead and alive because he is curios and therefore, he would like to know what are all the sacrifice of humans for. Ivan believes that Jesus makes justice but, he can not simply understand why God doesn't have mercy of defenseless children who are unreasonable torture. "I just most respectfully return him the ticket"( Ivan, 245). According to religion we have to forgive our enemy as well as God forgives us. Ivan does not support the idea that one must forgive the actions of someone who made us suffer. He uses the example of a mother who saw her son been torn into pieces by the dog of the child tormentor. Ivan claims that "if she wants to, let her forgive the tormentor her immeasurable maternal suffering; but she has no right to forgive the suffering of her child who was torn into pieces"(Ivan, 245). Ivan thinks that if the mother forgive the tormentor of her child, she would be paying an extremely high price in order to satisfice God. How Descartes Tries to Extricate Himself from the Skeptical Doubts He Has Raised [All page references and quotations from the Meditations are taken from the 1995 Everyman edition] In the Meditations, Descartes embarks upon what Bernard Williams has called the project of 'Pure Enquiry' to discover certain, indubitable foundations for knowledge. By subjecting everything to doubt Descartes hoped to discover whatever was immune to it. In order to best understand how and why Descartes builds his epistemological system up from his foundations in the way that he does, it is helpful to gain an understanding of the intellectual background of the 17th century that provided the motivation for his work. We can discern ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Descartes was a child of the scientific revolution, but felt that until sceptical concerns were dealt with, science would always have to contend with Montaigne and his cronies, standing on the sidelines and laughing at science's pretenses to knowledge. Descartes' project, then, was to use the tools of the sceptic to disprove the sceptical thesis by discovering certain knowledge that could subsequently be used as the foundation of a new science, in which knowledge about the external world was as certain as knowledge about mathematics. It was also to hammer the last nail into the coffin of scholasticism, but also, arguably, to show that God still had a vital r_le to play in the discovery of knowledge. Meditation One describes Descartes' method of doubt. By its conclusion, Descartes has seemingly subjected all of his beliefs to the strongest and most hyberbolic of doubts. He invokes the nightmarish notion of an all–powerful, malign demon who could be deceiving him in the realm of sensory experience, in his very understanding of matter and even in the simplest cases of mathematical or logical truths.
