5. Citizens Advice Chairs & CEO’s meeting | Katey Hügi – November 2023
What is Digital Accessibility?
6. Citizens Advice Chairs & CEO’s meeting | Katey Hügi – November 2023
Accessibility is primarily about people,
and barriers to participation
7. Citizens Advice Chairs & CEO’s meeting | Katey Hügi – November 2023
Accessibility can be viewed as the ability for
everyone to access and benefit from
something, such as a website or app.
Accessibility is about finding and
dismantling the barriers to entry and use.
Accessibility and barriers
8. Citizens Advice Chairs & CEO’s meeting | Katey Hügi – November 2023
People are disabled by barriers in
society, not by impairments or
difference.
These barriers can be physical or caused
by people’s attitudes towards difference.
With digital content, people are disabled
by inaccessible code and designs.

important?
11. Citizens Advice Chairs & CEO’s meeting | Katey Hügi – November 2023
Moral
An accessible site promotes equal
opportunities and access to information.
For example, JAWS (a popular screen reader)
stands for Job Access with Speech.
Demonstrates social responsibility. Equal
access is a human right.

‘Designing for accessibility should be a thing. I really believe
that. We should instead design for the needs and preferences
of all people, who ever they are. If we don’t, we design barriers
for some of those people and then we have to use accessibility
to remove the barriers we have created.’
