This document discusses the genre conventions of action/crime films and how they were portrayed in the filmmakers' teaser trailer. It explains that the film follows a young drug dealer who gets caught up in the criminal underworld. The teaser trailer shows elements of illegal drug dealing through props like boxes of drugs and money to suggest unlawful activity. Shots of the main character running also imply violence and escaping from a crime scene. However, they had limited actors, so could not include multiple criminal characters as typically seen in this genre.
2. Our film
Our film follows the genre of action/ crime. We wanted to portray this theme within
our teaser trailer, so we researched the different conventions that help to display
this genre type.
Storyline:
The main storyline in our film, follows the life of a
young drug dealer, Jason who has got caught up in a
criminal lifestyle after being blackmailed by the
powerful boss that he works for. He plays a small part,
dealing for an international company that imports and
exports drugs worldwide. After getting caught by the
police, Jason has one choice, tell and risk everything or
lie and go down for a list of horrific crimes he didn’t
commit.
3. Convention of a
Crime/ Action Film
The elements usually used to portray a crime/action
film involves
• Violence- in most crime films there a type of
violence tends to be included or implied through
verbal threats.
• Criminals- the film is usually based on a criminal/
group of convicts, or follows the life of someone
tormented by criminals.
• Illegal activity- an unlawful element is always
present in crime action films, it is what the whole
movie is based on. Most criminal activity usually
includes drugs, robbery or murder.
4. What We Did
Within our films teaser trailer we portrayed the illegal activity of drug dealing/
trafficking, through the use of our props.
• Boxes- used to indicate large deliveries of drugs
• Drugs- we created substances that looked like drugs
• Money- displaying lots of cash in a scene also suggests an unlawful action
• Cars- cars indicate action and escaping. (especially fast moving cars, however we
were unable to drive the car for our filming)
We had a lack of actors to perform in the filming of our teaser, therefore we were
unable to include different criminals characters within our footage. However we did
film shots of the main character (Jason the drug dealer) and his clients.
Also we included elements of violence through the action in our shots, the main
character running suggested to the audience that he was escaping from a crime scene
that he was involved with or running from an act of violence directed on him. There is
also shots of Jason being pushed by his wife in our footage, this was also used to
display acts of violence.
