2. As you know we cannot live without water. Everyone
needs it. Because of water shortages some people are so
desperate to get it at any price that various conflicts
occur.
3. In 20 years the world's water consumption is expected to increase
by 40%.After the disappearance of many glaciers in the Pamir
Mountains, Hindu-Kush and the Tien-Shan the amount of water
will significantly decrease. What will happen next? People will be
thirsty, they won't be able to irrigate the crops. It is possible that
there will be conflicts between the countries which will not be
willing to share their natural water supplies with countries with
the water shortages. Historically, the biggest conflicts of that
type are in the Middle East and North Africa which still have to
deal with the water shortage problems. Those problem are also
common in other regions of Africa, South Asia, and China.
4. The purpose of these wars was not always the
drinking water but also the sea access. One of such
wars was The War of the Pacific. It was an armed
conflict fought from 1879 to 1884 between Chile and
the combined forces of Bolivia and Peru. Finally,
Chile won and gained the vast territories and rich
mineral resources. A sea access is very important as
it is very profitable - for example when tourists come
for vacation.
