1. Epistemics, epistemology and gnosis
Kalau kamu bisa berhasil—atau bahkan gagal—menyeberangisebuah sungai—
bukan misalnya melalui sebuah jembatan—kamu akan lebih benyak tahu
tentang apa itu sungai: "Now you know whata river is"-- itulah “epistemologi” ;
“Epistemein is to know by doing it”
Tulisan berikut adalah sepotong kutipan dari karya Heinz von Foerster,
Computing a Reality, isinya tentang constructing a reality. Tulisan Heinz von
Foerster itu memiliki kemiripan dengan konsep tahqiq alias “the art of
realization” dari Ibn Arabi.
Ibn Arabi sering berbicara mengenai puncaknya mengetahui—ultimate
knowing—yakni ketika kita, mencicipi—tasting—sesuatu (alias dhawq dalam
bahasa Arabnya), merasakan bagaikan lidah yang sedang merasakan rasa kopi.
Mengalami rasa kopi.

Epistemics, epistemology andgnosis : The Greeks of coursewere very good in
making good distinctions. And they distinguished between gignosko, which is
very closely related to gignomai. Gignomaimeans: to grow out, to come about,
to become, to be generated. Genesis, and so forth, gignomai. Gignosko on the
other hand means to perceivewith thesenses. To perceive with the senses. You
wish to generate a picture of something, yeah, to perceive with the senses. To
produceinsidea description. So Gnosis is associatedwith theknowledgewhich
is perceived through the senses—by contemplation and by reflection.
2. However, thereis another way of knowing, and this is described by the Greek as
epistemein and this is when you have a skill, whenyou know by doing it. And
what I could see here from time to time was, for instance, constantly a big flip
back and forth between gnosis and epistemics. Epistemeinis toknow by doing
it. That means whatDoc wants to know heis an epistemic. He wants to know by
doing it. He says I know thatstuff, when I can do all the crosses2
and when I can
make all these operations, and then I will begin to understand. Now whatis this
epistemein being generated? By epi and histemai. “Histemai” means “stand”
and “epi” means “above.” And as distinct from English where you understand
when you standunder, the Greeksunderstandwhen they stand above. They call
it epistemein. You stand abovethe thing, you can handle it, you can rack it, you
have the skill of doing something. Somebody says what is a pot, ah, come in I
will show you how to do it. He makes a pot before his very eyes and says now
try yourself. He can’t do it, he can’t do it, the pot falls to pieces until he can do
it. Now you know what a pot is.
So it is the epistemein-side where you by doing know and it is the gnosis-side
where by contemplation you know. It would be very nice and I think it is
possible to show that knowledge cannot be acquired by either one of the
operations. You have to have both.
