An effective healthcare administrator must follow through on commitments, communicate clearly, and have a good sense of humor. Specifically, they should take notes during conversations, set clear expectations for employees, and respectfully address performance issues. Failing to follow through, communicate properly, or manage stress can undermine an administrator's ability to lead their team successfully.
1. Ensuring You are a Quality Administrator
When you are working in healthcare administration, it is important that you understand how you
are going to be a good leader. There are many people that walk into a healthcare administration
position but are not able to be successful because they do not know how to lead people well.
When you are working in any type of administration, you will be required to be working over a
specific group of people. As you are working with and managing a group of people, you will
have to be an effective leader and ensure that you continue to be an effective leader.
Follow through
First, you should be sure that you follow through
with what you say you are going to do. There are
a lot of people that just do not understand that
they are going to have to remember everything
that they promise and ensure that they follow
through with what they say.
People will remember what you say and what
you promise them. If you are continually saying
things that you are not following through with or
if you are not keeping your word, you are going
to have a hard time gaining the trust of the
people that you are leading.
While you are working with your team you will also want to make sure that you know how you
are going to listen. When you are learning how to listen, you want to make sure that you are
going to actually listen and do what you can to follow up with what you have heard.
Whenever you sit down to talk with someone on your team, you should take notes. Make sure
that you take something from the conversation and that you understand what you need to do as a
result of the conversation that you have had.
Communicate clearly
Second, you should be sure that you are able to communicate
clearly with your team. Often times, people struggle in their job
simply because they do not know what is expected of them and
they do not know what they need to do to continue to move up in
their job.
2. You should be sure that you take the time that you need to take to set expectations very clearly.
Everyone should know what is expected of them on a daily basis and you should understand that
you are going to need to do to make sure that these are clear.
If someone is not going to fulfill their responsibilities, you will need to make sure that you know
how you are going to sit down and talk with them respectfully. Make sure that you take the time
that you need to set goals with the employee that is struggling.
Finally, you should understand how important it is to have a good sense of humor when you are
working in healthcare administration. Many people get so caught up in the stress that they forget
that they can easily laugh off small problems while they are learning how to fix them and deal
with them effectively.
