Treatment of swine flu depends on which category of patients. The first category is people with a cold or cough or a blocked nose or a running nose. They are given symptomatic treatment. So, for fever, they will get paracetamol, for cold or cough, decongestants medicines or drops, anti allergic medicines, etc. It is important to breathe from the nose as otherwise, cold air goes to the lungs and the nose cleanses the air. The next category is when the fever is very high or prolonged. Cough is very severe and the patient is getting tired, not able to stand, walk or eat. These patients are given tamiflu only if they are in the high risk category. Tamiflu is an anti viral drug which is available as a capsule or syrup and it works by killing the virus. The next category is patients with severe pneumonia. If you have pneumonia, you will have low oxygen levels, you will not be able to eat and you will be hospitalized. They are given tamiflu and then hospitalized. Tamiflu works best if the treatment is started as early as possible preferably within forty eight hours.
