Art And Education In Mona Lisa Smile
In the 1950's, women's rights and social standards began to be oppressed. During this time,
becoming the perfect housewife was held at a higher stake than getting an education. Women
advancing to high levels of education, such as law school or medical school, was generally unheard
of. As long as women had food out on the table for dinner time and bore children to produce a
family, that is all they were needed for. However, in the film Mona Lisa Smile (2003), a professor at
Wellesley College contradicts those ideals that had been set forth, among many other things, such as
teaching her students life lessons on love, art, and education.
Taking place in 1953, Mona Lisa Smile is a fictional drama that depicts the everyday lives of poised
and proper schoolgirls at Wellesley College in Massachusetts. The main character is Katherine Ann
Watson (portrayed by Julia Roberts). As stated in the introduction of the movie, "Katherine did not
come to Wellesley to fit in, she came to make a difference."(cite) She begins to teach art history at
the college, and is immediately alarmed by the social standards that the girls live by. Dressed in tight
pencil skirts, three inch high heels, and neutral–colored chiffon blouses, Wellesley students are the
main focus in the plot of the film. The costuming plays a specific role in the film. In multiple scenes,
the girls are shown going to bed in their cabins with nightgowns and their curls pinned, ready to face
the next day. They seem so relaxed once

College Essay On Wellesley College
One of the most admirable aspects of Wellesley College is that hugely ambitious projects are not
only encouraged by the institution, but are assisted and funded by Wellesley. Ever since I was a
child, I chased after dreams that were unrealistically bold. Most of the time they truly were
unrealistic –– I have probably failed twenty times for every success I've had. While the few
triumphant successes I've had are minuscule achievements compared to large–scale research
projects or service trips, I realized through these experiences how much easier and motivating it
would be to have an encouraging community supporting my goals. As a person who has had
countless insane ambitions and will have many more in the future, I find the supportive community
at Wellesley incredibly attractive and inspiring. One project I have always hoped to start is an art
collective where different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The mere thought of being a part of the Wellesley sisterhood –– being surrounded by powerful,
intellectual, compassionate women –– is extremely exciting. I initially entered college longing for a
strong sense of community and support, but unfortunately did not find it. Whether academically or
emotionally, when I cannot find strength within myself, I turn to my peers, and I know that at
Wellesley I will find what I have eagerly been searching and hoping for. Women having each other's
backs form some of the strongest and most important relationships I could have throughout my life.
I appreciate how highly Wellesley regards these relationships because in order to truly achieve any
goals, whether they be simple and modest or hugely ambitious, we all need to have each other's
backs. Through this sisterhood, I hope to find inspiration through other women while also being
there for them in their time of need. I believe that at Wellesley, I will not only make lifelong
connections, but I will grow immensely as a person and stronger as a

The Expanding Environment for Non Traditional Students
Non Traditional Students
According to current estimates approximately 75 percent of college students are now nontraditional
students – older than 25, attending school part time, and having delayed entry or reentry into college
for a variety of personal reasons. Post secondary education is needed by such students to develop
their careers and to acquire knowledge and skills required by a constantly changing global society.
This trend is not restricted to North America; it is a worldwide phenomenon.
Over the years, these nontraditionals have chosen either slower or faster options to proceed through
their chosen curricula. They could work incrementally, taking a few courses per year while taking
advantage of workplace tuition reimbursement ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Then, teachers must reach goals using diverse methods and techniques which engage the student and
make the learning process interesting. Though methods vary, a problem or task centered approach is
generally considered superior to a subject matter approach. Students and professors may work
together to co–create knowledge. Work in teams is an often used strategy because it replicates the
experiences of nontraditional students in the workplace. Additionally, teachers work to reduce time
and place restrictions for the nontraditional student that would limit that person's access to course
materials and assignments; asynchronous online options easily break down such barriers.
Furthermore, flexible access to student services has become more common over time. Clearer and
more accessible information now exists on institutions and the specific programs needed for
planning degrees and careers. Programs for nontraditional learners provide orientation workshops to
reacquaint applicants with the rigors of college level study, and to reduce anxiety about reentry after
a prolonged period of time. Some of these programs offer remedial classes to help the student re–
learn or improve study skills. The availability of financial aid information has improved greatly over
time.
Critics contend that the influx of nontraditionals into the college student market has accelerated a
trend toward

Letter To Wellesley College
As you may know, I am currently in my sophomore year at Wellesley College studying Peace and
Justice Studies with a concentration in Community Development through Education and Policy. As
my second year at Wellesley College nears its end, it is with a grateful and joy–filled heart that I
write this letter.
Like most college students, I often find myself feeling uncertain of the future and fearful of what is
to come. However, with each new day, I have been learning to depend on the Lord and trust that He
has it all figured out. Through the support of Christian communities on my college campus like
Black Women's Ministry and Cru Wellesley Christian Fellowship, I have gained a network of

Cru is a Christian ministry dedicated to helping students discover who Jesus is, grow spiritually with
other believers, and go impact the world for Christ.
This summer I have an amazing opportunity to continue to grow in my relationship with Him. I have
been accepted to a summer mission sponsored by Cru called Echo. Echo is a two–week mission
located in Boston that's goal is to help college students to own their faith and lead ministry on their
campus. From May 27th to June 10th, I, along with several other college students will receive
training for evangelism, ministry, and spiritual leadership. Through Echo, I hope to develop the tools
to own my faith and be an unashamed ambassador for Christ not only at Wellesley but also wherever
the Lord leads me.
Despite my excitement to step out of my comfort zone and develop my personal ministry, I cannot
do it alone. In order to raise the funds necessary to be able to participate in Echo, I am putting
together a team of financial ministry partners. My total need is $999, which covers housing, meals,
transportation and materials. I need half of the support by May 5th and the remainder by May 20th.

Good Readers And Good Writers By Vladimir Nabokov
A quick summary of both articles we will be discussing today on The Morning Show. The article,
Good Readers and Good Writers by Vladimir Nabokov is basing itself on how good readers and
good writers get good to begin with. Mr Nabokov explains that the author must be able to create
something different and unique to "sent planet spinnings" in order to produce a successful book.
While on the other hand to make yourself a good reader you must read a book with a fresh mindset
as if you don't know what 's to come, go in there expecting to learn something new and do not ruin
the thrill of it. Now onto John Holt's "How Teachers Make Children Hate Reading". This is Mr. Holt

When reading a book there's a special order that we like to follow. We see it manually from left to
right, but that 's not the same case when looking at a picture we tend to open up our eyes and look at
it at every angle. Once you've reread a book you'll start seeing it as a painting instead of a regular
book. Once you've cracked open the case, now the reader can enter the game. And that's when the
magic begins and people start praising the book and actually appreciate it. The attitude you bring
into a book is fairly important when reading it. That is a very clever way of seeing what the meaning
of reading is. However, when we come back, we will see how Mr. Holt defines reading based on his
own experiences and work he has done. (commercial break) We are back! This morning we have
been analyzing what reading is and hearing who is Mr. Nabokov and how he defines the meaning of
reading. John Holt is here to bring in his own take of the topic and later they will go on head to head
and see what solution they can agree with. C'mon out Mr Holt, time to discuss this topic we've been
going on and off about. First of all how are you? Long time no see. Tell the viewers a bit about
yourself. Hello, I'm fine. My name is John Holt I'm best known for "How Teachers Make Children

During The Last Couple Of Years, Chicago Public Schools
During the last couple of years, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) have gone through many difficulties;
ranging from teacher strikes to low funding, which has tremendously taken a toll on the students
attending these schools. The Illinois Policy Institute, which writes to inform the public of issues
affecting Illinois states, "Seventy–five percent of students at the lowest–performing elementary
schools failed to meet standards on state exams. More than 20 percent of these students scored in the
lowest category in reading, meaning they have a difficult time determining the main idea of a

needed to help CPS become successful. By attracting the attention of the nation, the Illinois
government will try harder to fix the problem, and more funding can be put in the school from
private philanthropists around the nation (even from Winfrey herself). Oprah Winfrey is the best

Smile is one of the best graphic novels ever! There is a girl named Raina in the novel Smile. She has
to get braces and survive middle school. The nonfiction graphic novel Smile by Raina Telgemeier
the theme is every cloud has a silver lining. The reader learns this through indirect characterization
,conflict ,and flashbacks. Therefore Raina has to see what middle school is going to be like with
braces. The reader learned this theme through conflict in the novel. In this scene Raina trips and falls
and brakes her front teeth . "...ha ha! Gasp, wham, missed me!!! Raina..."(Telgemeier,pg.7). This
shows the theme because she falls and looses her two front teeth and your mood can drop really fast.
In this next scene Raina is thinking about what she wants for Christmas. "All I want for Christmas is
my two front teeth."(Telgemeier,pg.103). This shows the theme because Raina had a flashback to
when she was little and lost her tooth in the bounce house. In this scene Raina is feeling sick and

she finds better friends. In this scene, Raina goes to her old friends house. "She's the only friend I

person who is immature without the author telling the reader. Overall indirect characterization is a

Military Commanders : Napoleon Bonaparte And The Battle Of...
In the year of 1815 the world was in turmoil again. Napoleon Bonaparte (1769 – 1821) had escaped
his exile and had returned in force. Once again he gained control of France's military and was on the
loose. It would come down to two Seventh Coalition armies to defeat one of the greatest military
commanders of the age. The Duke of Wellington Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley (1769 – 1852)
leading the British–Allied army and the Prince of Wahlstatt Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher (1742 –
1819) leading the Prussia army would meet Napoleon on the fields of Waterloo to determine the fate
of Europe. June 18, 1815 would see these military giants face off on the field of glory. The master of
defense, Duke of Wellington, and the master of attack, Napoleon, would fight to the bitter end and
would see the downfall of Frances greatest general. This battle was a battle that he could have won
if he was able to attack sooner, take the crucial points in the center, and had the Prussian
reinforcements not arrived when they did in order to save the British lines from being shattered. This
is a battle that would change the fate of Europe and it could have been won by the French if they
would have done things differently.

The Concept Of Education In 'Mona Lisa Smile'
There are two ways in which one leads a classroom of young entrepreneurs of learning. These forms
of education are concreted in either a banking concept or problem posing approach. Paulo Freire, the
creator of such ideas, is a man who believes in the distinct difference that either reaps learning or
destroys it. Banking concept education, according to Freire, is an education that "becomes an act of
depositing, in which the students are the depositories and the teacher is the depositor" (Freire 244).
In simpler terms, banking concept is the lack of true understanding by students. Learning is not a
responsibility, instead it is an act to passively check off the list. In contrast, Freire speaks of problem
posing as "liberating education [that] consists in acts of cognition, not transferrals of information"
(Freire 249). To expand, Freire is bringing to light that this type of education is the development of
genuine, active understanding between teachers and students. Freire believes in critical,
investigative work between teachers and students. He believes that the banking concept restricts
growth and keeps students and teachers from a true critical understanding of the world. Both
banking concept education and problem posing education are evident in the film Mona Lisa Smile.
Mona Lisa Smile, a film set in 1953, is a vivid look into Freire's understanding of education. The
1950s, a time of distinct gender roles and spoon fed understanding, promotes an environment at the

Barack Obama 's Candidacy For The Second Time
As Democrats consider Hillary Clinton's candidacy for the second time, women are wrestling with a
difficult question: whether they have an obligation to get behind someone who is closer than anyone
has ever been to becoming the first female president.
And with her opponent, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, outdrawing her in support among
young women, Mrs. Clinton's candidacy has turned into a generational clash, one that erupted this
weekend when two feminist icons, Madeleine Albright and Gloria Steinem, called on young women
who supported Mr. Sanders to essentially grow up and get with the program.

Science to me has to be one of the most interesting subjects, because it allows people to think,
question, and solve all on their own. When you find a problem to a solution some already know
what to do, but in a science problem/research it's all trial and error. You are using your brain to its
full capacity; the research never ends and that's the exciting part. Having to work in solving all the
missing links and how it can benefit other sciences such as geologists, evolutionist, and even
biochemist is really mind blowing. To me it is important to work in an atmosphere where I can work

Out of all three, liberal feminism is the most widely known and is often what most think of when
they think of feminism. This kind of moderate, mainstream feminism contemplates the public
sphere, on legal, political, and institutional struggle for the rights of individuals. This was a time
when women really wanted to stop feeling pressured by all those around them. Third Wave feminist
wanted freedom from interference by the state, but most importantly from the bonds of custom and
prejudice imposed to them by society. They argued the idea of sameness and favored the idea that
men and women were simply equal. This led to them simply wanting reforms to work towards this
equality as opposed to the Marxist idea of revolution. When it comes to radical feminism there is a
rejection of the more liberal idea of assimilating women into areas of activity associated with men.
Instead they focus on women's own oppression as women in a social order dominated by men and
the fact that they are oppressed as women and not as members of other groups or social

college might lead to debt and the shattering of dreams. Hence, the resounding question is, "is
college worth it?" The answer to this questions is even more daunting for today's average family and
prospective high school graduates.
A major problem for today's high school graduates is the rising price in college education. Attending
college can add up really fast; it can cost up to tens of thousands of dollars per year (Barkan 1). No
wonder, in Steven Barkan's book of social problems, issues and problems in higher education take
up a full chapter. In this chapter, Barkan states that only 44% of all students who attend a four–year
institution is lucky enough to have annual tuitions and fees amount to less than $9,000 per year. The
aggravating question is, "why does college cost so much?" Not only is tuition part of the cost of
college but also fees housing and meals, books, school supplies, and accessories ("What's the Price
Tag" 1). All tuition covers is the money for academic instruction. Fees are charges for specific
services such as, internet access, and then the cost of books and school supplies add up.
Additionally, one is not paying just for textbooks but also

Mona Lisa Smile Analysis
Mona Lisa Smile is set on the Wellesley College for girls in 1953. Wellesley College is located in
New England, and at the time this college campus and area of the country was very liberal and
proper. During the school years of 1953 and 1954 Katherine Watson, a teacher, was hired in the Art
History Department. Katherine Watson was from California and had dreamed of teaching at this
school for years. Once she was there, however, the school she had dreamed about was different than
she expected. Rather than a college promoting female education, it was encouraging marriage and
everything that comes with it. Homemaking, children raising, and having dinner on the table by 5
o'clock every night. At a cross road with what the school the girls were expecting her to teach, and
what she was expecting to teach, she chose to try and change the way these girls thought. From
getting them to look at how things are and how they could be. Throughout the film self interest
seemed to be the main motivation any of the women have. Their self interest is not driven towards
pursuing education but with finding a man that they can marry and build a life and family with.
Elizabeth Warren, who went by Betty, was raised in a very elite family. Just like her mother she was
to marry a man who had a good job, have children, and most importantly, stay with her husband.
Betty's husband was having an affair and even in the circumstances of her husband she was expected
to stay with him. Her mother had narrow

Wellesley College: A Short Story
The alarm clock rang furiously at six–thirty in the morning. Impatiently turning it off, I realized I
had a horrible stomachache. The women's choir had been preparing for weeks on end for this
concert at Wellesley College and there was no way I would miss it. It's a good thing I didn't. After
spending a night at Wellesley College with members of the choir, I knew that this was the place for
me. Even through two days of sickness, I was able to get a sense of what kinds of women attend
Wellesley. These women are creative, determined, but most of all, they are individuals. This is
exactly the kind of woman I strive to be. Because of one night with the choir and many
conversations with my sister, I have come to the conclusion that discussing ... Show more content on

At Wellesley, I will have the chance to incorporate these special aspects of my life into my goals of

my life, from taking piano lessons, leading an a capella group, participating in the high school choir,
and writing and recording my own compositions. I never intend to lose my connection with music,
and Wellesley can help me with the opportunity to realize how serious I want to go with my vocal
interests and piano playing with its several acapella groups, Wellesley College Choir, and many
other student groups. In addition to music, sports are activities that I have always participated in

Wellesley presents many different athletic choices. With a strong passion to continue playing tennis
somewhat competitively, I have the option of competing at a varsity level, or opting to simply use
the plethora of sports facilities available. Students have also organized intramural sports in order to

Summary: The Student Athlete
Even at its time of conception, the American culture thrived off of games and sports. Nowadays, it is
even possible to get through college by just throwing a ball around. Of course; however, it isn't that
simple. But, is it really okay for a student to be able to get themselves through college because of
their ability to play sports and not their academic skills? In an essay in the book America Now:
Short Readings from Recent Periodicals titled "The Student Athlete" by Red Smith; is a story about
said student. Walter Wellesley "Red" Smith, who hailed from Green Bay, Wisconsin, studied
journalism at Notre Dame to later pursue a career in sports writing. This one piece in particular
focuses on a student that wrote an essay to one of his professors regarding why his teammate took
the place of first string when he was better at passing than the starting quarterback. The essay was
borderline illegible –– the grammar being something expected of an elementary student. Things like
repeated or unnecessarily omitted words would appear, a severe lack and overall misuse of
punctuation, and a slew of other fatal grammatical errors plagued his paper. So then arises the
question: "should we be allowing students to progress through ... Show more content on

Why is that? The simple answer is that, In the end, a student athlete is still just that; a student. Even
though they study something other than physics, math or a foreign language, they should not be
considered anything less. It takes skill and sportsmanship like no other occupation in order to be an
athlete. Here in the American society, it is just as impressive to win a game of professional football
as it is to submit a lengthy research paper, because it takes just as much work. A student by
definition is "someone who is studying in order to enter a particular profession" and in the American
culture, that includes

The French Defeat at the Battle of Waterloo and Napoleon's...
The French Defeat at the Battle of Waterloo and Napoleon's Lack of Judgment After abdicating to
the island of Elba Napoleon Bonaparte returned to France to rule the country once again. However
after just 100 days ruling he had suffered the final defeat and was aboard a British ship returning to
exile once more. He gambled everything on a battle which if he had won would've have left in an
extremely strong position in Europe and would've changed the face of Europe as we know it today.
He was arguably the greatest military commander in modern times; he achieved things that seemed
impossible on many occasions. However this deity of modern warfare and Emperor of France was
beaten during a battle, which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

General Alvinczy[2], an extremely experienced leader of the Austrian army. His victories lead to a

was defeated. Throughout his career he had beaten armies which more men, guns and higher morale.
This time however when he had more men, more guns and arguably better morale, he lost. Napoleon
insisted on a very unsubtle battle plan. He never considered outflanking the numerically weaker
British; he focused on a frontal attack aiming at breaking Wellingtons centre and making him run.
[3] If he had considered some technical manoeuvres many historians believed he would've won. A
historian wrote; "Napoleon believed the secret of winning lay in the simple offensive, here he
showed it didn't work"[4]. However, this tactical error cannot account for the overall loss. Napoleon
had used this system of pouring firepower into the centre many times before, and more often than
not it had prevailed. In saying that he had usually committed his old guard far earlier than he did that
day. The decision Napoleon took in using Grouchy, Ney and Shoult has to be questioned. They all
made terrible mistakes during the battle, and therefore it reflects badly on Napoleon in his choice of
commanders. Ney ordered a mass,

As a liberal arts college (#6), Wellesley is able to provide an environment where I can develop my

The Decisive Outcome Of The Napoleonic Wars
Thesis Statement:
This paper shall attempt to show the reasons for the need of this campaign and why this campaign
was important to the decisive outcome of the Napoleonic Wars [1787–1815].
Historical Background:
In 1803, the War of the Third Coalition began against France. In this coalition, the powers of the
United Kingdom, Austria, Russia, and Sweden went to war against France to reestablish order on the
old continent of Europe. In the War of the Third Coalition two major battles of the Napoleonic wars
were seen: Austerlitz and Trafalgar–both were decisive in their tides of the war efforts. In the end,
Austria would be forced into a surrender, and the Confederation of the Rhine would occur. This
would leave the United Kingdom as one of the few states at war with France for the safety of
Europe. By 1808, Napoleon was marching on many of the old states (again): Austria, Prussia, and
Spain. With the French invasion of Spain and Portugal, the British were forced to send troops to the
Iberian Peninsula. Following a series of defeats and almost the complete loss of Lisbon, the United
Kingdom placed Arthur Wellesley (who would later become known as the Duke of Wellington) in
command of the Iberian Forces for the defense of Portugal, thereby, beginning the great campaign in
Spain, known only as, the Peninsula Campaign. The reason for the historical significance of the
Peninsula Campaign of 1808 to 1814 is thusly this: with growing number of British troops in the
underbelly of

Analysis Of Barbara Bush's Speech
In May of 1990, Barbara Bush gave a speech that made waves throughout the United States. The
First Lady was asked to give a commencement address to the graduating class of Wellesley College
in Wellesley, Massachusetts. Her audience was filled with soon to be graduates and their families.
As a public figure, her speech was also reproduced to be read and listened to by thousands of
people. Being a commencement address, the speech was about life, the future, and the graduates'
time at Wellesley. She explicitly stated, "Today you meet on Severance Green to say goodbye to all
of that, to begin a new and a very personal journey, to search for your own true colors." Her purpose

The reality was quite the contrary, that the "Angry 150" had valid opinions, as did their opposition.
As previously said, Barbara Bush was invited to be the 1990 commencement speaker because she
placed second in a classwide vote. Her popularity indicates that a sizable amount of Wellesley
students thought her visit would be beneficial. The class president, Julie Porter, said, ''I support Mrs.
Bush coming here. She's a very interesting and successful lady who lived in a different time. She
didn't have the options we have. I think women should be evaluated not on how much money they
make, but whether they're happy.'' Porter's remark brings to mind a very important concept, one that
Tyrell felt the petitioners were overlooking: that the progress in women's rights did not mean the
same thing for every woman. Too many of the soon to be graduates, Barbara Bush was an icon,
someone to be admired. They believed she had the right to be their commencement speaker, just as
much as Maya Angelou (1982) and Gloria Steinem (1986) had. In the study of American history, the
1980s and 1990s are considered a time of turbulence. Bush touches on this when she says, "These
–– These are exciting times. They're exciting in Washington, and I have really looked forward to
coming to Wellesley." She was living in the White House, placing her at the center of everything,
and she knew better than anyone what the future may hold. When Bush gave this speech, America

The Symphony Of Beethoven Symphony
Beethoven's Seventh Symphony showed the world not only what a nearly perfect musical
composition sounds like, but also the sheer relevance and absolute importance of historical context
in the perception of music. Written from 1811 to 1812, the piece has to this day remained one of
Beethoven's greatest works. Beethoven dedicated the symphony to Count Moritz von Fries, an
aristocrat that frequently hosted Beethoven in his more than accommodating home. The premiere for
the symphony was on December 8th, 1813 at a charity concert where the proceeds went to wounded
Austrian and Hungarian soldiers from the battle of Hanau. The symphony was immediately popular,

After underestimating the size of the French army, the allies retreated from Madrid and into a small
town in western Spain called Ciudad Rodrigo. It was at this point that the French sustained a
significant blow from the failed invasion attempt on Russia. As a result, Bonaparte withdrew a
sizable portion of troops from the western peninsular war to replenish his primary army. Meanwhile
the Duke took the time to reinforce the allied army, and began pushing the French forces out of
Madrid. 105,000 allied soldiers met the largely demoralized French army of 60,000 at Vitoria. The
Battle decisively ended the peninsular war and led to the eventual collapse of Napoleonic rule in
Europe altogether. As did most people in Europe at the time, the inhabitants of Vienna despised
Napoleon and the French in general. The victory at Vitoria therefore caused a universal sense of
celebration and euphoria to spread throughout Vienna. Originally written for the panharmonicon, a
large, automated organ capable of creating several different sound effects, Wellington's "Victory"
was changed for the orchestra. A friend of Beethoven's, Johann Nepomuk Maelzle, an engineer best
known for inventing the metronome, requested that he compose a piece that would commemorate
the victory over Napoleon. Widely considered Beethoven's worst piece: "a piece of startling
crudity," "The Battle Symphony" premiered on December

Rhetorical Analysis Of How To Get In By Susan Erdrich
On December 2, 2016, in the opinion editorial, "How to Get In," Susan Estrich, best–selling author
and liberal columnist for the Creators, argues that hard work, not college acceptances, determine
people's future successes, challenging the notion that people's opportunities and potentials are
defined by the colleges they enter. Refuting the misconception that "getting into the right college is a
meal ticket for life," Estrich argues that GPA's and LSAT's may decide the difference between
rejection and acceptance, but ultimately, tenacious hard work throughout life counts "for more than
anything else," before concluding that the "secret to a good application" is honesty and that,
although she understands admissions can be partisan and erroneous through personal experience, in
the end, she "did just fine"– an echoing sentiment to all prospective college applicants. Estrich ...

colleges they enter, that resolute and steadfast work serves as a greater tool for people than anything
else. Estrich incorporates terse, direct clauses to debunk the myth of college being "a meal ticket for
life" with a wry "it isn't." Estrich's brisk, seemingly dismissive two–word sentence serves a frank
reminder to students that their lives exist outside the stress of college acceptance letters, urging for

whether they "get the interview(s)." Instead, Estrich claims, the "trick for getting in" is simply

The battle of Waterloo is universally associated with the last stand of Napoleon. It is (for all intents
and purposes) the most significant blow to Napoleons final attempt at a return to power, Napoleons
loss sealed his fate and consequently lost his empire (once and for all). However was it truly
Napoleon's faults that resulted in the loss at Waterloo? Or as many have stated was it more
accurately Marshal Ney's inability to follow Napoleons orders and command his troops in a custom
that Napoleon not only expected but had spent years refining. Before the battle of Waterloo
Napoleon ordered 30 000 troops under the command of Marshal Grouchy to separate from the main

Summary Of The Film Mona Lisa Smile
For this assignment, I chose to watch the film Mona Lisa Smile, which came out in 2003. The
content of this film relates to many of the topics we have discussed or will discuss throughout this
course. One area of course content that relates to this film is intersectionality. This is an area, which
we spent a lengthy amount of time discussing during this course. Based off of the information we
learned relating to this topic, intersectionality is a feminist approach that seeks to explore and
understand various social categorizations. Typically, these various social categories can lead to the
formation of overlapping systems of oppression and inequality. This topic is related to the film
because the female characters are all different from one another and each of them is made up of
multiple categorizations. This caused them to experience various obstacles throughout the movie.
When looking at the content of this course, one topic that played a major role throughout the film
was education. We have not discussed this area yet in the course, however women have faced many
adversities in relation to this topic over the years. In the film, most of the characters are students at a
prestigious all girls school called Wellesley College. Although it appears that the female students are
there seeking higher education in reality, most of the girls are there to find a husband.
Additionally, the content of this course also relates to the film Mona Lisa Smile when looking at
employment and the issues women are faced with. Although issues surrounding women in the
workplace have drastically improved over the years, women still have difficulty establishing respect.
They also still have a hard time obtaining higher–level supervisory roles in the workplace.
Throughout the film, the students are discouraged from working after graduation and from
continuing their education. The female faculty members are expected to act a certain way and are
very limited with what they can and cannot do at Wellesley College. The main character in the film,
Katherine was even targeted by her employer for falling outside of the norm. When it was time to
renew her contract she was told she would only be asked back if she agreed to stick to the course

Napoleon Bonaparte's Position as a Great Man
People need leader, despite the fact that they will not mentioned in the history, who can direct, guide
and motivate them to achieve greatness out of ordinary life. History has witnessed many great men
who rose above their ordinary life and filled this position such as Napoleon Bonaparte.
On June 18th 1815 in the town of Waterloo, Belgium, the Anglo–Allied forces and French army
demonstrated their power under the command of Duke of Wellington and with leadership from
Napoleon Bonaparte known as the Battle of Waterloo. After his return to France, Bonaparte
assembled his infamous French army 72 000 men and proceed to attack the Anglo–Allied Forces of
118 000 under the command of The Duke of Wellington and Gebhard von Blücher. Against all odds
and unfavorable circumstances, the French emperor marched onwards with an intention of
preventing Anglo–Allied Forces advancing to Brussels. After attempting many of his acclaimed war
tactics and strategies, Bonaparte's strong effort and unfaltering eagerness were proven futile. By
underestimating the strength of the Anglo–Allies, Bonaparte's aspiration of a unified European
nation was washed away with heavy rain and buried under the muddy ground of Waterloo. The
strategic and tactful leader abdicated after witnessing the scattered and dead army on June 21st
1815. Later, he was captured and exiled to the South Atlantic island of St Helena, where he died on
May 5th 1821.

Film Review of 'Mona Lisa Smile'
In the film "Mona Lisa Smile," Julia Roberts plays the role of Kathryn Watson, a teacher who has
been allowed back into her profession only if she complies with strict guidelines relating to her
lesson plans and their adherence to the status quo. To understand this, the context of the film is
important. Watson teaches Art History during a decade the 1950s that is notorious for its singular
views of female roles in society. Watson wishes to dislodge these by using her medium of
instruction to help her students understand that the world offers more than just one life choice. The
ways in which she does this is by using the common ground she shares with her students to lead
them to a new understanding not only of the academic content being discussed, but also by
interpreting this understanding in a way that can be applied to life itself. The common ground that
Kathryn Watson shares with her students is Art History. Her role as instructor is to provide them
with knowledge about this subject. For most teachers, this is where it ends. Students are to learn a
number of facts that can be regurgitated in as close an imitation as possible during tests and exams.
There is no requirement to think critically. The only requirement is a relatively good memory and an
ability to commit facts to such a memory. Kathryn Watson, on the other hand, does not believe that
this is the only function of teaching. For her, teaching also involves leading students to pathways of
thinking that can help

Art And Education In Mona Lisa Smile

  • 1. Art And Education In Mona Lisa Smile In the 1950's, women's rights and social standards began to be oppressed. During this time, becoming the perfect housewife was held at a higher stake than getting an education. Women advancing to high levels of education, such as law school or medical school, was generally unheard of. As long as women had food out on the table for dinner time and bore children to produce a family, that is all they were needed for. However, in the film Mona Lisa Smile (2003), a professor at Wellesley College contradicts those ideals that had been set forth, among many other things, such as teaching her students life lessons on love, art, and education. Taking place in 1953, Mona Lisa Smile is a fictional drama that depicts the everyday lives of poised and proper schoolgirls at Wellesley College in Massachusetts. The main character is Katherine Ann Watson (portrayed by Julia Roberts). As stated in the introduction of the movie, "Katherine did not come to Wellesley to fit in, she came to make a difference."(cite) She begins to teach art history at the college, and is immediately alarmed by the social standards that the girls live by. Dressed in tight pencil skirts, three inch high heels, and neutral–colored chiffon blouses, Wellesley students are the main focus in the plot of the film. The costuming plays a specific role in the film. In multiple scenes, the girls are shown going to bed in their cabins with nightgowns and their curls pinned, ready to face the next day. • 3. College Essay On Wellesley College One of the most admirable aspects of Wellesley College is that hugely ambitious projects are not only encouraged by the institution, but are assisted and funded by Wellesley. Ever since I was a child, I chased after dreams that were unrealistically bold. Most of the time they truly were unrealistic –– I have probably failed twenty times for every success I've had. While the few triumphant successes I've had are minuscule achievements compared to large–scale research projects or service trips, I realized through these experiences how much easier and motivating it would be to have an encouraging community supporting my goals. As a person who has had countless insane ambitions and will have many more in the future, I find the supportive community at Wellesley incredibly attractive and inspiring. One project I have always hoped to start is an art collective where different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The mere thought of being a part of the Wellesley sisterhood –– being surrounded by powerful, intellectual, compassionate women –– is extremely exciting. I initially entered college longing for a strong sense of community and support, but unfortunately did not find it. Whether academically or emotionally, when I cannot find strength within myself, I turn to my peers, and I know that at Wellesley I will find what I have eagerly been searching and hoping for. Women having each other's backs form some of the strongest and most important relationships I could have throughout my life. I appreciate how highly Wellesley regards these relationships because in order to truly achieve any goals, whether they be simple and modest or hugely ambitious, we all need to have each other's backs. Through this sisterhood, I hope to find inspiration through other women while also being there for them in their time of need. I believe that at Wellesley, I will not only make lifelong connections, but I will grow immensely as a person and stronger as a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Expanding Environment for Non Traditional Students Non Traditional Students According to current estimates approximately 75 percent of college students are now nontraditional students – older than 25, attending school part time, and having delayed entry or reentry into college for a variety of personal reasons. Post secondary education is needed by such students to develop their careers and to acquire knowledge and skills required by a constantly changing global society. This trend is not restricted to North America; it is a worldwide phenomenon. Over the years, these nontraditionals have chosen either slower or faster options to proceed through their chosen curricula. They could work incrementally, taking a few courses per year while taking advantage of workplace tuition reimbursement ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Then, teachers must reach goals using diverse methods and techniques which engage the student and make the learning process interesting. Though methods vary, a problem or task centered approach is generally considered superior to a subject matter approach. Students and professors may work together to co–create knowledge. Work in teams is an often used strategy because it replicates the experiences of nontraditional students in the workplace. Additionally, teachers work to reduce time and place restrictions for the nontraditional student that would limit that person's access to course materials and assignments; asynchronous online options easily break down such barriers. Furthermore, flexible access to student services has become more common over time. Clearer and more accessible information now exists on institutions and the specific programs needed for planning degrees and careers. Programs for nontraditional learners provide orientation workshops to reacquaint applicants with the rigors of college level study, and to reduce anxiety about reentry after a prolonged period of time. Some of these programs offer remedial classes to help the student re– learn or improve study skills. The availability of financial aid information has improved greatly over time. Critics contend that the influx of nontraditionals into the college student market has accelerated a trend toward ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Letter To Wellesley College As you may know, I am currently in my sophomore year at Wellesley College studying Peace and Justice Studies with a concentration in Community Development through Education and Policy. As my second year at Wellesley College nears its end, it is with a grateful and joy–filled heart that I write this letter. Like most college students, I often find myself feeling uncertain of the future and fearful of what is to come. However, with each new day, I have been learning to depend on the Lord and trust that He has it all figured out. Through the support of Christian communities on my college campus like Black Women's Ministry and Cru Wellesley Christian Fellowship, I have gained a network of friends, mentors, and spiritual leaders that have encouraged ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cru is a Christian ministry dedicated to helping students discover who Jesus is, grow spiritually with other believers, and go impact the world for Christ. This summer I have an amazing opportunity to continue to grow in my relationship with Him. I have been accepted to a summer mission sponsored by Cru called Echo. Echo is a two–week mission located in Boston that's goal is to help college students to own their faith and lead ministry on their campus. From May 27th to June 10th, I, along with several other college students will receive training for evangelism, ministry, and spiritual leadership. Through Echo, I hope to develop the tools to own my faith and be an unashamed ambassador for Christ not only at Wellesley but also wherever the Lord leads me. Despite my excitement to step out of my comfort zone and develop my personal ministry, I cannot do it alone. In order to raise the funds necessary to be able to participate in Echo, I am putting together a team of financial ministry partners. My total need is $999, which covers housing, meals, transportation and materials. I need half of the support by May 5th and the remainder by May 20th. If your heart is willing, can you consider making a contribution of $10, $20, $50, $100 or whatever the Lord has put on your heart to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Good Readers And Good Writers By Vladimir Nabokov A quick summary of both articles we will be discussing today on The Morning Show. The article, Good Readers and Good Writers by Vladimir Nabokov is basing itself on how good readers and good writers get good to begin with. Mr Nabokov explains that the author must be able to create something different and unique to "sent planet spinnings" in order to produce a successful book. While on the other hand to make yourself a good reader you must read a book with a fresh mindset as if you don't know what 's to come, go in there expecting to learn something new and do not ruin the thrill of it. Now onto John Holt's "How Teachers Make Children Hate Reading". This is Mr. Holt realizing that he needs to change up his methods of teaching and all it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When reading a book there's a special order that we like to follow. We see it manually from left to right, but that 's not the same case when looking at a picture we tend to open up our eyes and look at it at every angle. Once you've reread a book you'll start seeing it as a painting instead of a regular book. Once you've cracked open the case, now the reader can enter the game. And that's when the magic begins and people start praising the book and actually appreciate it. The attitude you bring into a book is fairly important when reading it. That is a very clever way of seeing what the meaning of reading is. However, when we come back, we will see how Mr. Holt defines reading based on his own experiences and work he has done. (commercial break) We are back! This morning we have been analyzing what reading is and hearing who is Mr. Nabokov and how he defines the meaning of reading. John Holt is here to bring in his own take of the topic and later they will go on head to head and see what solution they can agree with. C'mon out Mr Holt, time to discuss this topic we've been going on and off about. First of all how are you? Long time no see. Tell the viewers a bit about yourself. Hello, I'm fine. My name is John Holt I'm best known for "How Teachers Make Children Hate Reading". Although, I have written several books hoping to influence individuals and organizations through reading. During The Last Couple Of Years, Chicago Public Schools During the last couple of years, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) have gone through many difficulties; ranging from teacher strikes to low funding, which has tremendously taken a toll on the students attending these schools. The Illinois Policy Institute, which writes to inform the public of issues affecting Illinois states, "Seventy–five percent of students at the lowest–performing elementary schools failed to meet standards on state exams. By attracting the attention of the nation, the Illinois government will try harder to fix the problem, and more funding can be put in the school from private philanthropists around the nation (even from Winfrey herself). Oprah Winfrey is the best known icon of philanthropy. She has given away more than three hundred and fifty million dollars towards charity organizations also known as The Angel Network, which provides charity grants to various countries for poverty, disease, education, homelessness, and child neglect. • 15. Military Commanders : Napoleon Bonaparte And The Battle Of... In the year of 1815 the world was in turmoil again. Napoleon Bonaparte (1769 – 1821) had escaped his exile and had returned in force. Once again he gained control of France's military and was on the loose. It would come down to two Seventh Coalition armies to defeat one of the greatest military commanders of the age. The Duke of Wellington Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley (1769 – 1852) leading the British–Allied army and the Prince of Wahlstatt Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher (1742 – 1819) leading the Prussia army would meet Napoleon on the fields of Waterloo to determine the fate of Europe. June 18, 1815 would see these military giants face off on the field of glory. The master of defense, Duke of Wellington, and the master of attack, Napoleon, would fight to the bitter end and would see the downfall of Frances greatest general. This battle was a battle that he could have won if he was able to attack sooner, take the crucial points in the center, and had the Prussian reinforcements not arrived when they did in order to save the British lines from being shattered. This is a battle that would change the fate of Europe and it could have been won by the French if they would have done things differently. • 23. The Concept Of Education In 'Mona Lisa Smile' There are two ways in which one leads a classroom of young entrepreneurs of learning. These forms of education are concreted in either a banking concept or problem posing approach. Paulo Freire, the creator of such ideas, is a man who believes in the distinct difference that either reaps learning or destroys it. Banking concept education, according to Freire, is an education that "becomes an act of depositing, in which the students are the depositories and the teacher is the depositor" (Freire 244). In simpler terms, banking concept is the lack of true understanding by students. Learning is not a responsibility, instead it is an act to passively check off the list. In contrast, Freire speaks of problem posing as "liberating education [that] consists in acts of cognition, not transferrals of information" (Freire 249). To expand, Freire is bringing to light that this type of education is the development of genuine, active understanding between teachers and students. Freire believes in critical, investigative work between teachers and students. He believes that the banking concept restricts growth and keeps students and teachers from a true critical understanding of the world. Both banking concept education and problem posing education are evident in the film Mona Lisa Smile. Mona Lisa Smile, a film set in 1953, is a vivid look into Freire's understanding of education. The 1950s, a time of distinct gender roles and spoon fed understanding, promotes an environment at the heart ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The answer to this questions is even more daunting for today's average family and prospective high school graduates. Nowadays, it is even possible to get through college by just throwing a ball around. Of course; however, it isn't that simple. • 53. The Decisive Outcome Of The Napoleonic Wars Thesis Statement: This paper shall attempt to show the reasons for the need of this campaign and why this campaign was important to the decisive outcome of the Napoleonic Wars [1787–1815]. Historical Background: In 1803, the War of the Third Coalition began against France. In this coalition, the powers of the United Kingdom, Austria, Russia, and Sweden went to war against France to reestablish order on the old continent of Europe. In the War of the Third Coalition two major battles of the Napoleonic wars were seen: Austerlitz and Trafalgar–both were decisive in their tides of the war efforts. In the end, Austria would be forced into a surrender, and the Confederation of the Rhine would occur. This would leave the United Kingdom as one of the few states at war with France for the safety of Europe. By 1808, Napoleon was marching on many of the old states (again): Austria, Prussia, and Spain. With the French invasion of Spain and Portugal, the British were forced to send troops to the Iberian Peninsula. Following a series of defeats and almost the complete loss of Lisbon, the United Kingdom placed Arthur Wellesley (who would later become known as the Duke of Wellington) in command of the Iberian Forces for the defense of Portugal, thereby, beginning the great campaign in Spain, known only as, the Peninsula Campaign. The reason for the historical significance of the Peninsula Campaign of 1808 to 1814 is thusly this: with growing number of British troops in the underbelly of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The reality was quite the contrary, that the "Angry 150" had valid opinions, as did their opposition. As previously said, Barbara Bush was invited to be the 1990 commencement speaker because she placed second in a classwide vote. Her popularity indicates that a sizable amount of Wellesley students thought her visit would be beneficial. The class president, Julie Porter, said, ''I support Mrs. Bush coming here. She's a very interesting and successful lady who lived in a different time. She didn't have the options we have. I think women should be evaluated not on how much money they make, but whether they're happy.'' Porter's remark brings to mind a very important concept, one that Tyrell felt the petitioners were overlooking: that the progress in women's rights did not mean the same thing for every woman. Too many of the soon to be graduates, Barbara Bush was an icon, someone to be admired. They believed she had the right to be their commencement speaker, just as much as Maya Angelou (1982) and Gloria Steinem (1986) had. In the study of American history, the 1980s and 1990s are considered a time of turbulence. Bush touches on this when she says, "These –– These are exciting times. They're exciting in Washington, and I have really looked forward to coming to Wellesley." She was living in the White House, placing her at the center of everything, and she knew better than anyone what the future may hold. The Symphony Of Beethoven Symphony Beethoven's Seventh Symphony showed the world not only what a nearly perfect musical composition sounds like, but also the sheer relevance and absolute importance of historical context in the perception of music. Written from 1811 to 1812, the piece has to this day remained one of Beethoven's greatest works. Beethoven dedicated the symphony to Count Moritz von Fries, an aristocrat that frequently hosted Beethoven in his more than accommodating home. The premiere for the symphony was on December 8th, 1813 at a charity concert where the proceeds went to wounded Austrian and Hungarian soldiers from the battle of Hanau. The symphony was immediately popular, winning the admiration of critiques and audiences alike. Described as the most perfect ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After underestimating the size of the French army, the allies retreated from Madrid and into a small town in western Spain called Ciudad Rodrigo. It was at this point that the French sustained a significant blow from the failed invasion attempt on Russia. As a result, Bonaparte withdrew a sizable portion of troops from the western peninsular war to replenish his primary army. Meanwhile the Duke took the time to reinforce the allied army, and began pushing the French forces out of Madrid. 105,000 allied soldiers met the largely demoralized French army of 60,000 at Vitoria. The Battle decisively ended the peninsular war and led to the eventual collapse of Napoleonic rule in Europe altogether. As did most people in Europe at the time, the inhabitants of Vienna despised Napoleon and the French in general. The victory at Vitoria therefore caused a universal sense of celebration and euphoria to spread throughout Vienna. Originally written for the panharmonicon, a large, automated organ capable of creating several different sound effects, Wellington's "Victory" was changed for the orchestra. A friend of Beethoven's, Johann Nepomuk Maelzle, an engineer best known for inventing the metronome, requested that he compose a piece that would commemorate the victory over Napoleon. Widely considered Beethoven's worst piece: "a piece of startling crudity," "The Battle Symphony" premiered on December ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 59. Essay On How Wellesley Attracts "The way in which we have your back" really attracts me. At Wellesley, I have experienced the most supportive community in my life. It is as if to me Wellesley is not just a college where people go to only for education, but a place where people help and support one another, and they are becoming stronger and stronger together. This sense of togetherness exists at Wellesley is so precious to me, because it cannot be seen in many other colleges. I lost my way twice for the first time visiting Wellesley. At first, I didn't ask for any help, I just stood in one place trying to figure out the way by myself. To my surprise, two kind and friendly Wellesley students came to me asking if I needed any help. Normally when people want to show directions, they would simply point the way to the preferred destination and hurry to leave; however, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I love physics almost more than anything else. However, I am interested in a liberal arts education at the same time. Liberal arts colleges are better at providing unique and wonderful experiences to students. People get to build lifelong relationships with other amazing people at a liberal arts college, and they will have a better understanding of humanity. I was very worried because not many liberal arts colleges that I like offer engineering courses, and hence I was so excited to know Wellesley has limitless educational options. I learned from a Wellesley representative visiting our high school that students who are interested in the field of engineering can take classes at Olin College and MIT. This has also inspired me to make Wellesley my first–choice. More importantly, for a long time, accesses to the field of hardcore science and math are limited to women, and it is very rare to see women working as engineers. This educational opportunity provided by Wellesley empowers women, making them to be different from and much stronger than what general people believe them to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 61. Rhetorical Analysis Of How To Get In By Susan Erdrich On December 2, 2016, in the opinion editorial, "How to Get In," Susan Estrich, best–selling author and liberal columnist for the Creators, argues that hard work, not college acceptances, determine people's future successes, challenging the notion that people's opportunities and potentials are defined by the colleges they enter. Refuting the misconception that "getting into the right college is a meal ticket for life," Estrich argues that GPA's and LSAT's may decide the difference between rejection and acceptance, but ultimately, tenacious hard work throughout life counts "for more than anything else," before concluding that the "secret to a good application" is honesty and that, although she understands admissions can be partisan and erroneous through personal experience, in the end, she "did just fine"– an echoing sentiment to all prospective college applicants. Estrich ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Through colloquial, blunt, yet sincere language, Estrich establishes a conversational and empathetic tone that resonates with middle–class high school seniors who find themselves entangled in the inherently competitive process for elite colleges. Estrich utilizes succinct, emphatic syntax and series of asyndeton to argue that hard work defines people's lifelong successes regardless of the colleges they enter, that resolute and steadfast work serves as a greater tool for people than anything else. Estrich incorporates terse, direct clauses to debunk the myth of college being "a meal ticket for life" with a wry "it isn't." Estrich's brisk, seemingly dismissive two–word sentence serves a frank reminder to students that their lives exist outside the stress of college acceptance letters, urging for students to recognize that in hindsight, the prestige of their college does not solely determine whether they "get the interview(s)." Instead, Estrich claims, the "trick for getting in" is simply "work," a word that shifts between the boundary of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 63. Essay on Napoleon at Waterloo The battle of Waterloo is universally associated with the last stand of Napoleon. It is (for all intents and purposes) the most significant blow to Napoleons final attempt at a return to power, Napoleons loss sealed his fate and consequently lost his empire (once and for all). However was it truly Napoleon's faults that resulted in the loss at Waterloo? Or as many have stated was it more accurately Marshal Ney's inability to follow Napoleons orders and command his troops in a custom that Napoleon not only expected but had spent years refining. Before the battle of Waterloo Napoleon ordered 30 000 troops under the command of Marshal Grouchy to separate from the main force, splitting off in order to (in theory) catch and eliminate the ... Marshal Ney's First mistake is seen in the exemption of ordering infantry attacks along with his cavalry, this though a forgivable mistake was compounded once his other mistakes are made. Infantry and cavalry are so often used in tandem precisely because when cavalry attacks infantry alone, the infantry has only to form strategic "squares" and the cavalry is easily repelled, this however the formation of squares is easily prevented with the use of infantry, rows of infantry can easily shoot down a square with little to no ... Why Go To Wellesley College Research Paper Numerous reasons exist as to why I want to go to Wellesley College, but one of them is definitely number thirteen, where it states "We have your back". As someone who wants to gain her college education in a supportive and helpful environment, this is quite an important reason, and from what I've researched about the college, it seems to be one hundred percent true. The Wellesley community, including the students, faculty, and alumni, are all highly supportive. • 67. Essay The Battle of Waterloo French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte is remembered as one of the greatest minds in military history. His revolutionary approach to warfare changed the course of history and the principles which governed his style of leadership are still valued today. Although he had an illustrious career of over 25 years and expanded the French Empire from Portugal to Russia, his reign came to end at the hands' of his enemies. The Battle of Waterloo was Napoleon's last stand as a military commander and will be examined for his use of the principles of the operations process. Napoleon failed to implement these activities effectively and is ultimately responsible for the loss of the battle. Napoleon was able to lead his men, but was unable to overcome his ... Napoleon faced an Austrian Army of 200,000, Russian Army of over 150,000, a Prussian Army of over 100,000, and British Army of over 100,000 which out numbered the 200,000 he could muster. The French Commander decided to implement a strategy to divide and attack each army individually in order to defeat their will. Napoleon believed the Allied Forces would lose resolve if separated and not come to the aid of another country.2 Napoleon's assessment proved accurate as the Austrian and Russian Army's did not arrive in time to be relevant, and he was able to split the British and Prussian forces in Belgium. At the Battle of Ligny, on June 16th, 1815 Napolean was able to defeat the Prussian Army commanded by General Gebhard von Blucher; however, he was unable to destroy them. Three days later the Battle of Waterloo was fought 12 miles south of Brussels. Napoleon's French forces faced the Duke of Wellington from Britain and General Gebhard von Blucher of Prussia. The Battle of Waterloo can be broken down into five distinct phases which ultimately lead to the defeat of Napoleon and the French Army. • 73. Summary Of The Film Mona Lisa Smile For this assignment, I chose to watch the film Mona Lisa Smile, which came out in 2003. The content of this film relates to many of the topics we have discussed or will discuss throughout this course. One area of course content that relates to this film is intersectionality. This is an area, which we spent a lengthy amount of time discussing during this course. Based off of the information we learned relating to this topic, intersectionality is a feminist approach that seeks to explore and understand various social categorizations. Typically, these various social categories can lead to the formation of overlapping systems of oppression and inequality. This topic is related to the film because the female characters are all different from one another and each of them is made up of multiple categorizations. This caused them to experience various obstacles throughout the movie. When looking at the content of this course, one topic that played a major role throughout the film was education. We have not discussed this area yet in the course, however women have faced many adversities in relation to this topic over the years. In the film, most of the characters are students at a prestigious all girls school called Wellesley College. Although it appears that the female students are there seeking higher education in reality, most of the girls are there to find a husband. Additionally, the content of this course also relates to the film Mona Lisa Smile when looking at employment and the issues women are faced with. Although issues surrounding women in the workplace have drastically improved over the years, women still have difficulty establishing respect. They also still have a hard time obtaining higher–level supervisory roles in the workplace. Throughout the film, the students are discouraged from working after graduation and from continuing their education. The female faculty members are expected to act a certain way and are very limited with what they can and cannot do at Wellesley College. The main character in the film, Katherine was even targeted by her employer for falling outside of the norm. When it was time to renew her contract she was told she would only be asked back if she agreed to stick to the course ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Napoleon Bonaparte's Position as a Great Man People need leader, despite the fact that they will not mentioned in the history, who can direct, guide and motivate them to achieve greatness out of ordinary life. History has witnessed many great men who rose above their ordinary life and filled this position such as Napoleon Bonaparte. On June 18th 1815 in the town of Waterloo, Belgium, the Anglo–Allied forces and French army demonstrated their power under the command of Duke of Wellington and with leadership from Napoleon Bonaparte known as the Battle of Waterloo. After his return to France, Bonaparte assembled his infamous French army 72 000 men and proceed to attack the Anglo–Allied Forces of 118 000 under the command of The Duke of Wellington and Gebhard von Blücher. Against all odds and unfavorable circumstances, the French emperor marched onwards with an intention of preventing Anglo–Allied Forces advancing to Brussels. After attempting many of his acclaimed war tactics and strategies, Bonaparte's strong effort and unfaltering eagerness were proven futile. By underestimating the strength of the Anglo–Allies, Bonaparte's aspiration of a unified European nation was washed away with heavy rain and buried under the muddy ground of Waterloo. The strategic and tactful leader abdicated after witnessing the scattered and dead army on June 21st 1815. Later, he was captured and exiled to the South Atlantic island of St Helena, where he died on May 5th 1821. When the British overcame the French forces, it stamped an ... • 77. Film Review of 'Mona Lisa Smile' In the film "Mona Lisa Smile," Julia Roberts plays the role of Kathryn Watson, a teacher who has been allowed back into her profession only if she complies with strict guidelines relating to her lesson plans and their adherence to the status quo. To understand this, the context of the film is important. Watson teaches Art History during a decade the 1950s that is notorious for its singular views of female roles in society. Watson wishes to dislodge these by using her medium of instruction to help her students understand that the world offers more than just one life choice. The ways in which she does this is by using the common ground she shares with her students to lead them to a new understanding not only of the academic content being discussed, but also by interpreting this understanding in a way that can be applied to life itself. The common ground that Kathryn Watson shares with her students is Art History. Her role as instructor is to provide them with knowledge about this subject. For most teachers, this is where it ends. Students are to learn a number of facts that can be regurgitated in as close an imitation as possible during tests and exams. There is no requirement to think critically. The only requirement is a relatively good memory and an ability to commit facts to such a memory. Kathryn Watson, on the other hand, does not believe that this is the only function of teaching. For her, teaching also involves leading students to pathways of thinking that can help ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
