2. Indus Valley Civilization (4000 BC-3500 BC)
• The archaeological evidences found at Mohan-jo-Dara and Harappa revealed
the existence of a highly evolved urban civilization that flourished in India
• The careful and elaborate civic and domestic sanitary arrangements make us to
think that it must be based on and supported by a sound understanding and
practice of health and environmental science.
• They developed advanced and modern canal irrigation system and water
storage system which included artificial reservoirs
4. Vedic Period (2500 BC-2000 BC)
• Considered to be a period of great intellectual and creative activity in the
Indian civilization which in fact laid the foundation of Indian culture, and
civilization.
• The Indian culture, customs and traditions are based on the ancient Indian
scriptures like ‘Vedas’, ‘Smritis’, ‘Upanishads’, ‘Puranas’, ‘Epics’, ‘Samhitas’
etc., composed during this period are perhaps the oldest record of human
wisdom
5. Aham Brahmasmi
"I am Brahman, part and parcel of Para
Brahman. Whatever is in the Universe,
is present in me and whatever is in me,
is part of the Universe. So whatever
happens to me, happens to the universe
and whatever happens to the universe
affects me. I am not different from the
nature or the universe around me”.
6. ‘Isopanishad’ says…..
“This universe is the creation of
the supreme, meant for the
benefit of all His creations.
Individual species must,
therefore learn to enjoy its
benefits by forming a part of the
system in close harmony with
other species. Let not any one
species encroach upon the others
right”.
7. “Ayurveda” – the Science of Life
(between 2500 BC and 1000 BC).
• Is one of the world's oldest holistic
(“whole-body”) healing systems.
• The process of life is in constant
state of flux and not in static
condition and that in this dynamic
process a continual adjustment with
the environment is necessary for
the health and well-being.
8. Sushruta –Father of Surgery
• Sushruta (600 B.C.) is believed to be the first
individual to describe plastic surgery. Sushruta
who lived nearly 150 years before Hippocrates
vividly described the basic principles of plastic
surgery in his famous ancient treatise 'Sushruta
Samhita’ in 600 B.C.
• 'Sushruta Samhita'(Sushruta's compendium) which
is one of the oldest treatise dealing with surgery in
the world indicates that he was probably the first
surgeon to perform plastic surgical operations
9. Charaka – Father of Indian Medicine
• The language of Charaka is
Sanskrit and its style is poetry, with
meter and melody. Poetry was
known to serve as a memory aid.
10. • If an organism fails to adjust and adapt either due to some innate
deficiencies or due to the overwhelming force of the environment the result
is the diseased condition.
• The human organism (Microcosm), therefore, swings in a definite rhythm
with the macrocosm (atmosphere, environment and the universe in general)
and in this interplay of the meteorological rhythm with the biological rhythm
of individual there may be synchronization, amplification, summation or
negation effects and reactivity of the individual
11. “Dharmasastra”
(Code of Conduct)
• Need for observance of cleanliness of both personal and civic maintenance of
pollution free environment.
• Unless the body is kept scrupulously clean and free from toxic or morbid materials,
the procedures for revitalizing and strengthening of the body will not be efficacious
• Dinacarya (Daily routine or regimen)
• Ritucarya (Seasonal routine or regimen)
• Sadacara (Social behavior or moral standard)
12. YOGA
Yoga is a group of physical,
mental, and spiritual practices
or disciplines which
originated in ancient India.
13. Surya Namaskar
Surya Namaskar, or Sun Salutation, is a Yoga
practice incorporating a sequence of
gracefully linked asanas. The nomenclature
refers to the symbolism of Sun as the soul
and the source of all life.
14. Sacred Grooves
(Biodiversity Hotspots)
Forest fragments of varying sizes, which
are communally protected, and which
usually have a significant religious
connotation for the protecting
community.
A place wherein inherent diversity of
flora and fauna are preserved for the
future.
15. • Hunting and logging are usually
strictly prohibited within these
patches. Other forms of forest
usage like honey collection and
deadwood collection are sometimes
allowed on a sustainable basis.
16. Energy Conservation Behaviour
Energy conservation behaviour is a code of conduct shown by an individual in
which he/she is conscious about the environment and is concerned about
ecological deterioration.
