1. HOW DID YOU USE
MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES
IN THE CONSTRUCTION,
RESEARCH, PLANNING
AND EVALUATION
STAGES?
2. Introduction
• Throughout the course of creating my music video and the ancillary
tasks I used a series of different media technologies to help me.
Using all these different media technologies has excelled my skills
and experience of uses of different software programs and is
something that I can benefit from in the future. I started off the A2
media year with simple comfortable software as I found it easier
and i was more confident with this method, however being taught
how to use a range of different media technologies and being
introduced to new experiences has helped improved the way I
present my results and findings. So I will talk about each media
technology that I have used or come across throughout the time of
my course and I will provide some information on it and why I
benefitted from it.
3. Adobe Premier Pro
• The main media technology that I used most was a program called Adobe
Premier Pro. Premier Pro is a software used to edit footage together. I
found it quite hard at the beginning as I had no experience using the
program at all, however as I have been practicing using this software I
have become a lot more confident with Adobe Premier Pro and the
experience and skills will help me in the future. One thing that I quite liked
about Premier Pro is all the different windows that came with the
software, it made everything easier to work with and to edit. I could see
each aspect of what I was doing very clearly and found it interesting to
play with the effect controls and different types of effects. A
disadvantage I found with Premier Pro was that I moved all the raw
footage of my desktop and placed it in a folder, this effected my
completed music video as Premier Pro could not find the raw footage that
I edited therefore causing more work for me as I had to re-edit parts of my
music video, luckily I did not lose any original footage and the problem
was resolved quite quickly. In the future I would make sure not to move
any video clips/footage from where Premier Pro is familiar with.
4. Adobe Photoshop
• Photoshop is another media technology that I have used. Photoshop is a
well-known editing software, it is used by magazines to edit text and
images and also used by photographers that take pictures of models for
posters and magazines. I did not have any previous experience with
Photoshop so I found it quite hard to work with at the start, however
messing around with practice cd digipacks and music magazines made it
easier for me to edit and improve my real images for my cd digipack and
music magazine advertisement. Photoshop gave my images a personal
touch and made them look very professional. It was crucial for my grade
that my cd digipacks and music magazine advertisement to look high
quality and that they were my own photography, so having the
experience of using Photoshop and having time to practice with it really
gave my images effect and brought them to life. I think Photoshop was a
good software for me to use during my media course and I know have the
skills and experience of Photoshop and can use it in the future.
5. Blogger
• For my work I used Blogger. Blogger was very convenient for me to
keep my work in order and it also gives access to others to view my
work. It also lets the teacher access my work to make sure I am up
to date. I had never used Blogger before starting my AS media
course and feel that it is a good way of keeping my work organized
and presenting it as well. I am now very comfortable with using
Blogger and will be using it in the future. Reviewing Blogger as a
whole I would say that I used it most of the time for posts on
planning, researching, constructing and feedback for all 3 of my
products. Blogger also lets you embed videos of YouTube, or thinks
you have uploaded to YouTube. You can embed a lot of different
presentations as well as YouTube ones. Overall I think that Blogger
was very useful to get information on my project and extra details.
6. Glogster
• Glogster is another media technology that I have used throughout
the course of my media coursework, Glogster is known for making
posters. I used Glogster mainly for my artist research, I created
posters on here of my 3 potential relatively unknown artists/band
and picked the final one that I wanted to use. I then created a few
posters on Jason Chen(chosen artist) with different information on
him. I also named the songs that he has done and how he became
famous. I did not have any experience with Glogster before Media
Studies and I am now more confident in using it as I feel that
Glogster is an interesting way of presenting information. In my
opinion i think that Glogster was a suitable and unique way of
presenting my work on potential artists and my chosen artist.
7. Prezi
• Another media technology that I used was a presentation tool
known as Prezi. I was very familiar with Prezi as I knew how to use
this presentation tool a lot through AS Media Studies, so I would
say I am very confident with this software. Prezi has a lot of
different ways to present information, it makes presentations more
interesting and playful and is a unique way of presenting
information. I mainly used Prezi for introducing the chosen artist to
the rest of my class and for showing information on my chosen
artists to whoever visited my blog. Prezi is well-known and is often
used for people to present ideas and information. You can use this
presentation tool for large amounts of information and you can also
include images that are in relation to this.
8. SlideShare
• SlideShare is a bit like Prezi, it can be used for a large amount of
information and you can also include images that relate to the
information. I used SlideShare to get information on my chosen
artist across, I mainly used SlideShare in my AS media studies
course so whereas I used Prezi a lot more in A2. I did not know
about SlideShare until I started AS Media Studies, I became
comfortable with SlideShare throughout my AS year and lost
interest in A2 year. I benefitted a lot by using this presentation tool
as it provided me with a lot of different ways to present my work.
9. SurveyMonkey
• I used SurveyMonkey as well, this is another media technology,
SurveyMonkey is a quick way of getting feedback from a range of
different people. You create a questionnaire that provide open and
closed questions on the topic that feedback is needed on, you can
then post the website link on Facebook, Blogger, Twitter, Instagram
and other social networking sites, this gives back more feedback
from people of different age rather than just classmates. Not only
do you get a lot of results but you also get virtual charts which
make it easier to analyze visually and it makes everything easier and
less work. I used SurveyMonkey a lot especially when I needed
feedback from people about my chosen artist and potential music
video ideas. I also used SurveyMonkey quite a lot in my AS year and
it helped a lot to get feedback fast and suitable feedback as well.
10. YouTube
• YouTube was another media technology that I used. I used YouTube
quite a lot for my A2 year, the reason for this is because it provided
me with a lot of information. I researched different artists that I
could use, I also looked at different songs that I could produce a
music video for. Another thing I used YouTube for was looking at
different music videos and getting some ideas for my own music
video. I also used YouTube to embed different videos onto my Blog
to show music videos that I found inspiration from for mine. This
was good as I could state why they gave me inspiration and what I
would like to corporate from that music video into my own. I also
looked at previous media students work on YouTube, they were
from different schools around England and it helped me to make a
vision for my own music video. I was very confident in using
YouTube as I had the opportunity of using it from a young age due
to older siblings, so I was very comfortable when it came to using it
for research and importing and embedding.
11. PowerPoint
• PowerPoint is a more formal presentation tool, it is well known and
used a lot by those who are not introduced to the presentation
tools on the internet. I did not use PowerPoint a lot in my A2 media
studies course, however I did use it in my AS media studies course. I
was very familiar with the software as I have used it from a young
age due to I.C.T lessons and presentations during other subjects.
PowerPoint is good for those who prefer a simple presentation tool
however I feel that it lacks presentation as other presentation
software provides effects and interesting character. It makes it
easier to keep people entertained if the presentation is full of life
and has effects and texture whereas you cannot do this with
PowerPoint, you have the basics and the minimal with this
presentation software.
12. Apple Mac
• Apple Mac was another media technology that I used. The Apple
Macs were the only computer we used throughout the course of
planning, constructing, researching and evaluation all 3 products.
The Macs had specific software that we needed to complete each
project and it helped a lot when it came to providing evidence. The
Macs providing easy access to print screening as well as providing
us with targeted screenshots, this was useful if there was certain
information or images that I wanted to involve in my work. I was
quite comfortable with the Macs as I have a MacBook which is
similar to the Macs. The Macs also had a slit where we could put in
the SD card to export the footage we had recorded on the cameras
onto the Macs.
13. Canon EOS
• Canon Eos camera is another media technology that I used. The
Canon EOS was the main camera that I was comfortable with, this is
because it was the camera I practiced different camera shots and
angles with, I experimented quite a lot with this particular camera. I
had never had any previous experience with this camera so it was
an advantage to experiment with the camera before going out and
using it for my music video. It helped that I watched tutorials on
YouTube to help me if I was stuck, and I just preferred this camera
over the Nikon.
14. iPad
• iPad was another media technology that I used, I used this for
getting voice and video feedback. The quality of the camera on the
iPads were not very good however it was a good way to collect
feedback from. The voice quality was kind of scratchy, however it
was much better than the video quality. I mostly used the iPad in
my AS year more than in my A2 year. I have had previous experience
as I own an iPad and this made it easier for me to work with them
and I was very confident within this.
15. IPhone 5s
• Another media technology I used is my phone. IPhone 5s is the
current phone that I have and I used my phone a lot for voice and
video recording, the video quality was a lot better as I had a 5
megapixel camera on the phone, the voice recording was a lot
better as the phone has better speakers to hear and record the
voices. I also used my phone to take the images used for my cd
digipack and music magazine advertisement, this is because I had to
use my own photography and I preferred the quality of my camera
and being able to use the effects on my phone.
16. Conclusion
• In conclusion, all the media technologies that I have spoken about
above have all been necessary to me as they have helped me to
present my work in a various of different ways and also helped me
to improve the end product of my music video, cd digipack and
music magazine advertisement. All aspects of each media
technologies is very important to my coursework and I would
definitely improve on this in the future by making sure I use my
time wisely on each software.
