substance
3. Styles and Techniques
Lighting and shading makes print look much
darker
Low Contrast = gray and weak
High Contrast = harsh and contrasty
There are Five filters to help you control the
lightness and darkness of the picture
4. Making a Test Strip
First , make a test strip with a number 0 filter in place, Then you
choose the best exposure for the highlights
Second, Make a second test strip with a number 5 filter, Then you
chose the best exposure for the dark areas
Third, Make a full print
Make sure you use the filter 5 first first or the highlights will be too
dark
When you have mastered this, You produce a rich black and good
enlightening details that makes your pictures look more realistic
5. Results of Test Stripping

rich black and good enlightening details that
makes your pictures look more realistic
Now when people see your pictures, they see
the detail and feel more in tune with your picture
Controlling the contrast makes your picture able
to be seen clearly
6. Dodging and Burning
Dodging – holds back light during the basic printing
exposure to lighten the area
Burning – adds light after the basic exposure to
darken the area
Often, the overall density of a print is nearly right,
but part of the picture appears too light of too dark
For example, an extremely bright sky or a very dark
shadow area
