UNST 137E: Globalization Alex Sager 1493 Reflection: Columbian Exchange Write a three to four page (double-spaced, Times New Roman or equivalent font) reflection on 1493. The goal of the assignment is to reflect carefully on the consequences of the Columbian exchange and its role in the creation of a global economy and global biological era. For this assignment, pick one (and only one) of the three topics from 1493: silver, potatoes, or slaves and do the following: 1. Summarize the most important impacts (social, economic, and/or ecological) that silver, potatoes, or slaves had as part of the Columbian exchange. Keep in mind that a summary is not a list of everything mentioned in the book. Rather, your task is to identify the central theme(s), facts, and ideas. This is an exercise in critical reading (identifying what is important) as well as an exercise in concisely expressing ideas in writing. 2. Develop one of the major impacts from you summary using evidence from the book to support your claims. Document where you encountered information by including page numbers in brackets or by using footnotes. What consequences did this aspect of the Columbia Exchange have on the people in the region, people in other parts of the world, the ecosphere, and/or the economy? 3. Discuss one major way the world would have been different today without this aspect of the Columbian Exchange. To do well on the reflection: · Demonstrate that you have understood the reading and that you are able to identify central themes and supporting evidence (evidence will be mostly in the form of citations from the text) · Show that you have thought about the meaning of these central themes: how did silver, potatoes, or slaves affect the world? · Structure your reflection with clearly organized, succinct academic writing. The assignment is worth 10% of your grade this term. A hard copy is due at the beginning of class on Monday, November 3rd. ...
