The Colonization Of Korea Under Japanese Rule
Introduction The colonization of Korea under Japanese rule from 1910 to 1945 was one of
controversial histories as it shaped Korean society in both positive and negative ways. This paper
examines Korea's colonial relationship with Japan. In this paper, I argue the Japanese influence of
modernity was a positive gain to Korean society by referring to some examples. First of all, this
paper shows a brief history of the colonization from 1910 to 1945 to explain what was going on
during that period. Secondly, this paper discusses economic development in Korea society as a
positive effect because Japanese economic policy had an important role in the economy of the
colony. Thirdly, this paper analyzes three types of authority through new political system which
were created by Japanese in Korea. At the same time, this paper shows local autonomy which was
developed due to those types of authority as a positive effect. Fourthly, this paper describes the rise
of nationalism during that period as their nationalist movements affected their independence in a
positive way. In conclusion, this paper summarizes main ideas of these examples and main
argument.
A brief history of the colonization
From 1910 to 1945, Korea was under Japanese rule as a colonial country (Mackerras, Murphey &
Stapleton 2012). Japan exploited Korea in various ways during while the country was occupied as a
colony. For example, living standards were really low since Japan gained a lot of raw materials and

Japan 's Horse Meat Is A Popular Dish?
Did you know that in Japan horse meat is a popular dish? It is often called basashi, sakura, or
sakuraniku because of its pink color(sakura means cherry blossom and niku means meat). It is
usually served raw as sashimi in thin slices dipped in soy sauce, often with ginger and onions added.
This is only one of the fascinating things about Japan that you are going to learn throughout the
course of this report. The main thing you are going to learn about Japan in this report is that Japan is
an amazing country with a gigantic variety of things to explore. Japan is an island nation in the
Pacific Ocean that is located in East Asia and is comprised of 6852 islands, 430 of them being
inhabited. The total population that occupies those islands is 127,368,088 people, making Japan the
10th most populous country in the world. Japan has a total land area of 364,485 square Kilometers
and more than 70% of it is mountainous. In these mountains there are over 100 active volcanoes.
One of the active volcanoes is the famous Mt. Fuji.(Mount Fuji is a distinctive feature of the
geography of Japan. It stands 3,776.24 m (12,389 ft) high and is located near the Pacific coast of
central Honshu, just west of Tokyo.) Tokyo is the capital of Japan. Japan is generally a rainy country
with high humidity. Because of its wide range of latitude, seasonal winds, and different types of
ocean currents, Japan has a variety of climates ranging from: hot, dry, humid, wet, snowy, cool,
warm, and windy.

The Taagic Story of Dolphin Mistreatment
Ever since I was young, I was always fond of the ocean. The waves that the sea created intriqued me
and the animals that lived underwater were even more unbelievable. I found the dolphin to be
extremely fascinating. Since the first time I saw one while surfing at my local beach, Manly, I was

After much research, I found that the countries contributing most to dolphin killing where located in

The Meiji Restoration : Change And Domitarianism In Japan
While modern Japan and the Orthodox have worked together to maintain the country's traditional
and cultural sensitivity, they have cooperated with modernization in order to promote the
advancement of their country. Orthodox and Japan have managed to cooperate as Japan continues to
hold to the orthodox traditions as a conservative society, preserve orthodox traditions and continue
to have their lifestyle influenced by the traditional orthodox views. Japan has always and continues
to hold strong to the orthodox as a conservative society. At the same time, they are curious people,
and are willing to accept change and modernization. The event known as the "Meiji Restoration" is a
good example of Japan's ability to merge their orthodox tradition with modern policies and systems.
The Meiji Restoration began in 1868 when the Tokugawa shogun lost his power and the emperor
took rule. The Meiji Restoration resulted in a "highly centralized, bureaucratic government" (The
Meiji Restoration and Modernization, Asia for Educators). Before the Restoration began, Japan lost
control to its foreign trade and legal system to the Western powers, such as countries from Europe
and the United States. However, Japan eventually managed to retake control of their legal and trade
system. In order to do this, the emperor formed a group from younger and lower rank samurais.
With advice from these samurais, the emperor was able to establish a "constitution establishing an
elected parliament", a "highly

Foreign Military During Control On The Street
Liana Arnot
Professor Dominguez
English 101
4 December 2015 Imagine stepping outside and there was a foreign military in control on the street
that you live on. Having one 's home invaded by an unfamiliar person is a scary and traumatizing
experience. It encourages a person to take more precautionary measures to ensure that their home is
safe, but being watchful is not always a guarantee of safety. This concept reflects what the people of
Okinawa experienced in the nineteen forties and still struggle with today. The beautiful island of
Okinawa is located south of Japan and is composed of several small islands. Okinawa was its own
Ryukyu Kingdom before it was annexed by the Japanese in 1879 (mainichi.jp). Today, the Japanese
government itself does not truly treat Okinawa as an equal to mainland Japan. In fact, many of the
Okinawans do not consider themselves to be Japanese and actively voice that their culture is starkly
different than that of the Japanese people. The Japanese government is placing these bases on the
Okinawan's home without consulting them. It is an unfair act upon the locals because their home is
being taken from and they can do nothing to stop it. The bases are not only disliked by the locals but
it is also harming their marine life and polluting their environment. Mainland Japan is fully capable
of housing the new military bases but they would rather throw it on the nonviolent island of
Okinawa. The locals of Okinawa have not had a pleasant experience

Essay about Transformation of Japan
Transformation of Japan
During the time period between the 1850s and 1950s, Japan underwent massive changes politically,
economically, and socially. Acknowledging the failure of isolation, Japan imitated the West in an
attempt to modernize, however, still retaining its own identity. A reorganized and more centralized
government allowed Japan to industrialize in half the time it took the nations of Western Europe.
Industrialization provided Japan with the tools needed to transform itself from a half civilized and
"backwards" society during isolation, to a dominating superpower during WWII.
In 1853 during the Tokugawa shogunate, Matthew Perry, an American commodore, arrived with an
army at Edo Bay to coerce the Japanese ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Japan entered the race for colonies. Japan became imperialist after 1890 due to the need to pay the
new army, search for raw materials and new resources, and avoid Western intrusion of Japan's
possessions. Japan quickly defeated China in the Sino–Japanese War in 1895 gaining territory in
northern China. In 1902, Japan allied itself with Britain, demonstrating the arrival of Japan as an
equal to the Western powers. In 1904, Japan won the Russo–Japanese war on account of its superior
navy. In 1910, Japan annexed Korea. Economically, Korea was economically exploited.
The Great depression called for radical measures, which included military aggression. Japanese
military played a major role in setting diplomatic policy. The military was separate from the
bureaucracy and adhered to the emperor. The military saw Japan's liberalism as a threat to traditional
Japanese values and customs and the military's position in the government. In 1931, the military
captured Manchuria without government approval. In 1932, several military officials assassinated
the prime minister. As a result, a mildly military government was created as militaristic prime
ministers presided. The militaristic prime ministers called for expansion in Asia to create an empire.
The demand for wider conquests by the military drove Japan to enter WWII.
After WWII, Japan was devastated by war, but the aid of the U.S. allowed them to recover quickly.

The Problem Of Overpopulation In Japan
Introduction When the early humans left Africa, there was only 5,000 people. Now, the planet is
overpopulated, over 7 billion and counting. Nations all over the world to use too much of their finite
resources and spend too much money to maintain the life of their population. Other issues intensify
with the addition of more people, such as poverty, starvation, and climate change. This is a problem
even developed countries face, like Japan for instance. However, Japan has been successful in
combating the problems that arrive with overpopulation in several ways. In order for the world as a
whole to overcome overpopulation, nations must look to Japan as an example.
Dealing With Overpopulation in Japan In regards to a country's population, Japan is in the stage 4
category, meaning it has a low birth rate and a high life expectancy. Specifically, they have a low
percentage of youth and 25% of their population is over 65 years old (N. Probasco, personal
communication, 2017). These factors have led to an overwhelming population. As a result, the
Japanese government created solutions the slow the growth of more people and maintain those who
are still alive.
Supporting the Aging Population As stated earlier, Japan has a high number of elderly people, 25%
over the age of 65. This can be an issue for the government economically. There has to be enough
living communities built to accommodate the elderly as well as a staff on payroll to take care of
them. One solution is the

Meiji Reforms Essay
Evaluate the success of the Meiji Reforms in undertaking imperialism in Asia. The Meiji reforms
were significantly successful in undertaking imperialism in Asia. Imperialism can be understood as
expanding a country's power through increasing one's influence, gaining more territory and
controlling the region's economy. For japan to undertake imperialism in Asia they needed to
establish a centralised government, a strong military, a technologically advanced and unified nation
working together for the same goal. They achieved this by introducing the Meji reforms. From 1868
to 1912, Japan grew from a technologically backwards nation to a world power, defeating both
China and Russia swiftly and decisively. In addition to this, Japan had succeeded in establishing a
parliament, drafting a constitution, developed a strong legal, financial and economic system, created
a strong industry and improved social welfare and education standards. These improvements and
implementations made Japan internationally recognised and respected as a modernised country.
Looking back, we can identify numerous reasons that led to the success of undertaking imperialism
in Asia through the use of the Meiji reforms. The military reform had a significant role in
undertaking imperialism in Asia. The military reform of Meiji Japan was focused on establishing a
powerful and unified national military under the ultimate leadership of the emperor. To achieve this,
the Meiji government created equality among

Japan And China Relations During The End Of World War II
Japan and China have been in cold relations ever since the end of World War II. After the war, there
was barely any diplomacy to bring together their relation. Not until 1972 Prime Minister Kakuei
Tanaka of Japan visited China with an official invitation. At the scene, both sides were willing for
reconciliation and normalization, result with the Joint Communique between two governments.
From that moment on, the (economic) relations of the two nations has been reestablished,
encouraged and developed rapidly (China, Japan Joint Communique, 1972). There is an opinion that
China's incredible (economic) developing rate has greatly influenced Japan diplomatic with Beijing
since that time. And this essay is going to support this argument with data as well as historical and
contemporary context. First, energy requirement is usually critical to the development and
modernization of China and the stabilization of Japan. Therefore, variables that related to it can
influence both countries' economic interest, lead to the consideration of policy makers. It is clear
that both countries were in need of developing their gas and oil fields. Second, Japanese engagement
into China market have changed a lot – Japanese companies and corporations were having
decreasing influence on the economy of the client country – led to the need of adjusting investment
policies within the government body. Third, China is modernizing and in many ways will be able to
surpass Japan in near future. Therefore

The Importance Of The Japanese American Internment
"My priority was to try to show the American people that we are just as loyal as anybody else. We
need to prove our loyalty because the reason why we're in camp is because the American public says
that we are enemy aliens. Were loyalty to Japan and so forth. And that perceptions got to be
changed." – Susumu Satow. This statement is very powerful stating we need to show the American
people we are not your enemies but your friends. Do not be scared of us just because we are
Japanese. Prejudice played a large role in the Japanese–American relocation because of the 1894
treaty, conflict over China, and the Russian–Japanese War. The Japanese were never awarded for
their bravery going into those internment camps. They were spit on and called names. Imagine being
in that situation of hatred. Japanese–American relationships were strained (during the)years before
World War II. One of the reasons the United States and Japan did not get along was in 1894 when a
treaty was signed allowing Japanese Immigrants into America allowing them the same rights as US
citizens. In 1906, this treaty was violated when the San Francisco Board of Education passed a
provision sending Japanese and Chinese children to segregated schools. This movement angered the
Japanese Government because it violated the treaty. In late 1907 and into early 1908, letters were
exchanged between the United States and Japan known as the "Gentlemen's agreement". The
Gentlemen's Agreement was for the US government to

Keerti's Heavy Influence In Japan
In Japan, many politicians and important people of power are families who have heavy influence in
Japan's economy through companies for products, television, business, and the like. Through this
financial power in advertisements and influence over what can be placed and expressed in media,
there is power over what is considered and thought about within the country. Keerti explains that
this aspect of Japanese life needs to be revised in order to achieve democracy so that all voices are
heard equally and no voices are left or censored out. Keerti also expresses how political engagement
and civics classes are mandatory within secondary school and college in order to prepare students to
become informed citizens. She says there is room for corruption ... Show more content on

One common aspect across the three personalities is the degradation of the power of the rule by the
elite. All three agree that there is no good democracy that comes from a select group. Not only
because it is the elite in Japan, but it is those in power who are the problem. In Japan, a majority of
the House of Chancellors are passed down through bloodline or company relation. We cannot be
certain that those individuals are trained and knowledgeable in the problems in the political view.
However, this also brings up the concern of public awareness of political issues. Today, according to
Ikeda, Kohno, and Yamada's studies on citizen understanding political concepts between 1960–
1990, many Japanese citizens feel that they had no say in political decision making and that they
were not well educated in the policies and issues being discussed. As we discussed in class, this is a
common problem amongst democracy as a whole, not having a well educated, well informed
general public voting. Finally, the aspect of religious liberty brought within the political spectrum.
Although this contradicts John Locke's beliefs of keeping the politic and religious spheres separate,
this unity of religion ties together an ideal form of democracy for all three individuals. It is through
applying Buddhist values into Japanese government that would provide a sense of patriotism

How Did The Meiji Restoration Improve The Government Of...
The top to bottom Japanese revolution known as the Meiji Restoration occurred in 1868 and it
completely changed the system of government of Japan, which had been under the strict control of
the absolute rule of the Tokugawa Shoguns that kept Japan in a feudal state. The Tokugawa
government also kept Japan, for the most part, isolated from the rest of the world believing that they
had no need for Western ideas. All that changed under the fiction of the "restoration" of the imperial
government under the control of the emperor, as the revolutionary leaders of the Meiji Restoration
realized that if they did not modernize on a massive scale they would face an ever increasing foreign
threat much like China was experiencing. Japan's new ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead, the Japanese attempted to avoid going into foreign debt and instead concentrated on
building up their base using their own hard work and longsighted planning instead However, unlike
China, Japan is a country of limited natural resources and there is only so much that it can do on its
own. Therefore, the building up of its military into a first class army and navy was imperative as the
leaders realized that the only way for future expansion was to become an imperial colonial power
like Europe, which had gained power through its own colonial acquisitions. In a way, the rapid
expansion of Japan with its limited resources meant that in order to expand further it would need to
conquer other countries for their resources as pointed out in an article by Yasukichi Asuba when he
wrote, The shortage of a domestic supply of raw materials and fuel due to rising population
pressure, a rise in protectionism in foreign countries, and the recession of the domestic economy
after 1929 are said to have been the economic cause of Japanese

Japanese Politics : Japan 's Political System
Japanese Politics in the Shadows Japan's political system remarkably mirrors that of the west,
especially that of the United States. However, the method of how Japan's politicians carry out their
agendas and gather voter support takes place in backstage politics which has now prompted people
to demand for a more transparent government that work for them and not for the game of politics.
This backstage politics has caused a disconnection between the national leaders and the people that
they represent because they now have to take into account the need of a particular group or person
over the population they represent. Fortunately, there has been a growing movement in Japan where
the people are starting to actively show their discontent and want for reform.
Japanese politics can be separated into two different political zones; local and national politics. Each
zones use utilize the same V structure of organization, but it is when we reach the national scene that
we find the disconnection between the politician and the people. The manner in which political
relationships are develop and maintain in Japan are influenced by the inverted V structure of
organization (what is actual term for this) (Hendry, 199). In order for politicians to build a reputation
for themselves within a local community and later the national political scene they need participate
in the exchange and reciprocity cycle. This means that politicians give people their own time and
energy in exchange for

Case Study: Ikea In Japan

Ikea first entered Japan in 1974 but it then quit later in 1986. From a developing country to a
developed country, Japanese experienced rapid industrial growth after World War II. Japanese
became the largest economies in Asia with an annual GDP growth of nearly 10 percent. With the
increasing number of population living in the city, the demand for products and services in Tokyo
increases significantly. Thus, Ikea decided to enter Japan as the first step of its expansion on the
international market in Asia.
SECOND ENTRY
In 1974, Japan had attempted to establish its business in Japan through a joint venture with a
Japanese company. Ikea then withdrew from Japan market in 1986 due to its long term stagnant
sales. About two decades later, having the assistance of Japan External Trade Organization, Ikea ...

When there are falling prices, this often encourages people to delay purchases because they will be
cheaper in the future. In particular, it can discourage consumers from buying luxury goods (like
furniture with fancy design). Therefore, periods of deflation often lead to lower consumer spending
and lower economic growth, in turn creates more deflationary pressure in the economy. This
certainly causes malaise to Ikea's success in Japan. Just like any other developed country, Japan is
facing the problem of mounting government debt. Japan's public debt has currently exceeded one
million billion yen (243% of GDP). Although 90% of this debt is held domestically, it has reached
an extremely high level. By way of comparison, the portion of debt held domestically is 70% in the
United Kingdom, 47% in the United States and 35% in Germany. In order to cut the deficit, Japan
government is introducing a series of increases in sales tax to 10% in 2015. Addition of tax would

Pros And Cons Of Japan Government
The 1955 system, time known as the one in which Japanese government was under the control of a
one–party–dominated and conservative structure that lasted over nearly forty years, the Liberal
Democratic Party (LDP) coming from the union of two conservatives parties: the Japan Democratic
Party and Liberal Party, was a functional structure that showed a relative stability and consistency
within the state against its opposition counterpart, the Japan Socialist Party (JSP). The system's
notable elements mainly consisted in anti–labor and pro–business policies that protected the home
market from outside influence with low levels of social welfare spending, making Japan pass
through a growth period though, at the same time, such system presented cases of Diet's
unconstitutionalism, corruption scandals, and a lack of organization in more than one aspect. ...

How Music Can Enforce Or Challenge Power
Throughout the last two week of lecture, I have learnt that there are numerous ways where music
can enforce or challenge power. Throughout the years, "music has always been an integral part of
displays of political power, conveying national identity and official ideologies through symbolic
acts." The major three general ways how music can enforce or challenge power is through by the
language and text that is use for the lyrics, the historical background of the piece, and where the
piece was performed.
When the apartheid ended in 1990s and the New South Africa era started, there was a problem with
the national anthem. In 1997, a new combined anthem mixes "Nkosi sikelel' iAfrika" with "Die
Stem van Suid Afrika" and the lyrics in four languages: Zulu, Xhosa, Afrikaans, and English. The
lyrics employ the four most widely spoken of South Africa's official languages to represent the
diversity in South Africa. "Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika" (Lord, Bless Africa) was adopted by the African
National Congress (ANC) in 1925 as the official closing hymn of the organization. It has a long
historical context behind the song. During this period, South Africa was in huge racial
discrimination between the Native and the Whites. This hymn was a link to resistance from early on.

setting up illegal gambling establishments, and corrupting the local government with members of

Is Waste Disposal Necessary For Public Health?
Many villages and homes were destroyed completely in this event. Moreover, the houses which
were located in the radiological evacuation zone can not be used anymore (Dhitinut Ratnapradipa
PhD, Ruffing & Victor White MS, 2012). Local government set emergency point to settle affected
people. Additionally, waste disposal is an important issue during this event. The majority of waste
carried harmful bacteria with mud and dirt, and polluted with PCBs or asbestos (Makinen, 2011).
Disposal may also contribute to the reproduction of insects and other pests, posting a threat to
residents' health. Another problem is a large amount of waste, more than 80 million tons, exceeded
the capacity of disposal landfills. Thus, the government had to find somewhere else to deal with this
concern, which absolutely delay the transport of waste. In addition, controlling disease vector in
emergency shelters posted a threat to public health. The storage of food and water and the delay of
waste could contribute to the reproduction of insects and pests, which may become vectors of
communicable diseases (Dhitinut Ratnapradipa PhD, Ruffing & Victor White MS, 2012). Moreover,

Japanese Culture In Japan
Social Analysis Japanese culture is a blend of modern western culture and traditional Asian culture
(Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan, n.d.) And great value is placed on the need for harmony,
consensus decision–making and social conformity and especially close co–operation between
government and private enterprise, this emphasis on consensus will need to be taken into account in
business negotiations (Griffin & Pustay, 2015, p. 61) Positive market aspects are Japan's high!
Education levels, with universal elementary education and literacy (Abe, 2013; Institute of Export,
2015). However, problem workforce skill levels should the need arise to employ local labour with
83% of employers having problems filling vacancies; these positions include sales representative,
engineers and IT staff (Manpower Group, 2015). This may require sourcing staff from Australia.
Should this be the case it will be necessary to apply for a certificate of eligibility and a visa for
periods of 3 months, up to 5 years, processing for this usually takes 3 months (Embassy of Japan in
Australia, 2014). The population is ageing and increasingly health–conscious, which provide greater
scope for products promoting health benefits such as SAFCOl ready to eat tuna meals (Austrade,
2016). Japan has a sizeable middle class with the affluence to afford imported food products.
(Griffin & Pustay, 2015, p. 191). Since 1945 popular culture, including music, fashions and foods

a) The Australian government has many objectives in trading with Japan; external stability,
sustainable economic growth, etc. Australia may gain external stability as in recent; the Japanese
economy had been facing challenges over its energy policy, as well as other external risks. Australia
is a major beneficiary of that issue as the Japanese government is encouraging firms to help assure
energy and commodity supplies through increased investment in overseas natural resources. A
sustainable economic growth may also be gained through trading with Japan.
b) As Australia and Japan hold a very close relationship in terms of economically and is
fundamentally important to each other, there are many economic benefits to consumers, businesses,

jured, they had to believe that the injuries healed naturally. They would not be treated at all, and the
wounds would be left untreated, causing more serious illness. For example, there is a woman who
had been kicked hardly by a Japanese soldier that causes her arm broke, and it healed twists out of

sexual diseases, they could not get any further treatments for other health issues, such as broken
bones, injuries from repeated abuse, and sexual intercourse. For these reasons, Japan has caused
comfort women serious difficulties along with the miserable suffering from solemn physical
injuries. As for comfort women, they had psychological injuries as well, and among this issue, this is
more serious than it seems. Many comfort women lived horrific experiences for over five years in
comfort stations. Comfort women had seen many friends dying in front of them. They always had to
live with feelings of anger, shame, and fear; whereas, Japanese were. After World War Two, they

Japan And Its Effects On Japan
Japan unlike many other countries has thrived on globalization. Japanese companies have
investments all over the world, Japan exports modern technology such as new and innovative
vehicles, and Japan's people tourist in many iconic places outside of their country. But at the same
time, globalization is hurting Japan. Globalization in Japan has led the country into issues with
pollution. An overflow of waste incineration sites and construction, and also the butchery of Whales.
These matters have steered Japan into harming its environment. Japan owns 70% of the world's
waste incinerators which come with the main benefit of being able to burn garbage instead of having
it piled up in dumps. With this intention, it poses threats to anybody nearby the facilities because
they're so many. Additionally, Japan has only given the public very vague or unsatisfactory reasons
for their slaughter of Whales such as using very broad terms like science and ineffectual arguments
like tradition. This killing is putting the Whales' species in very dire danger. Not to mention that the
vast amount of construction taking place in Japan in years could lead the way to deforestation if it
hasn't already. At the same time, Japan has its reasons for using so many waste incinerators,
massacring Whales, and to assemble buildings over and over so much. Waste incinerators provide
hot water, electricity, and material for construction. As stated already, the Japanese government
claims they're whaling for

Yasukuni Shrine: Separation Of Church And State
In the modern world one of the most popular debate is that should there be a separation of church
and state. Majority of the people believe that the church and state should not be under the same
system. People argue that the leaders and its citizens are going to make irrational decisions that can
cause a lot of harm in the future. Yet there are a few countries in the modern world that have a
combination of the church and state in the nation. The countries argue that they want to preserve the
memory of their history and create a strong unity with its citizens. The nations believe that they are

The Shrine is being openly expressed around the world. Many Prime Ministers of Japan still visit
the Shrine despite other world leaders showing disapproval. The Japanese people and government
know the importance of past traditions and memory because it made Japan into a powerful nation in
the past. The Japanese people and government officials realize it is important to keep religion and
politics together in some way because it can create a lot positive impact for a nation. It kept Japan
together despite the hardships they might have faced such as losing to the allies and their cities
being destroyed. Yet Japan overcame these problems and they are one of the top countries in the
world in technological advancement. It was because of their strong faith toward religion and the
political system, which motivated people to rebuild. Another country in the modern world for
example is Israel that has a strong religion and political system. Israel is located in the most
dangerous regions in the world, but they stood their ground against their neighboring countries. The
country was united by religion and politics to combat any issues they might have to face in the
future. The Israel flag includes religion because the flag has the symbol of "David Star", which

Essay on American Post-War Occupation of Japan
American Post–War Occupation of Japan
The intent of the United States' occupation of Japan was to neutralize the threat of another war, to
nourish the Japanese economy back to health, and to provide a stable democratic government for the
defeated nation. With General Douglas MacArthur acting as the supreme commander in charge of
the occupation, Japan changed drastically. Special attention was paid to the areas of military,
economy, and government. The effects of the United States' occupation of Japan were profound
almost beyond reckoning, and have had enormous impacts on modern Japanese society as well as on
almost every other society in the modern world and throughout the course of history.

And if it was right in 1946 and wrong in 1953, why doesn't the United States admit for once that it
made a mistake? And I'm going to say something that I think perhaps ought to be done more by
people in public life. I'm going to admit right here that the United States did make a mistake in
1946. We made a mistake because we misjudged the intention of the Soviet leaders." (Walt 168)
Although the United States did well in eliminating any future threats from Japan, it was realized
later on that Japan was left in the midst of a violent wave of communism with no means of defense
but for the United States which did not wish for a direct war on the Soviets, who backed all
communist countries.
After disarmament was complete, MacArthur's next task was to see that Japan adopted a new, and
democratic, constitution. When the Japanese government proved too confused or too reluctant to
write a constitutional reform that satisfied MacArthur, he had his own staff draft a new constitution
in February of 1946. This, with only minor changes made to please the conservative groups in
Japan, was then adopted by the Japanese government in the form of an imperial amendment to the
1889 constitution. Japan's new democracy went into effect on May 3, 1947. The new constitution
was a perfection of the British parliamentary form of government that the Japanese had been
moving toward in the 1920's. Supreme political power was assigned to

Japan's Economic Slump

In only fifty years, Japan has moved from poverty to the highest levels of income, from economic
insignificance to leadership from the import of technology and capital to being a major source of
their export, from less developed status to the lead of economic position after the United States.
After being the best performer in the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development

the 1990s.
The revival of the Japanese economy is of great importance not only to Japan but also to the well

The reasons for this include high rates of both personal savings and privates–sector facilities
investment, labour force with strong work ethic, ample supply of cheap oil, innovative technology,
and effective government intervention in private sector industries (Asianinfo). Japan was also a
major beneficiary of the swift growth attained by the post–war world economy under the free trade
advanced by the International Monetary Fund and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. The
industry sector was and still is the main contributor to the Japanese economy.
By the late 1960s, Japan became the first post–war era nation classified as "less–developed" to
achieve "developed" status (Asianinfo). In 2000, Japan's gross domestic product (GDP) was $4.648
trillion, which represent approximately 15% of the world GDP. Its percapita GDP income in 2000
was $36,634, which is one of the highest in the world (Japan Finance ministry). Apart from the
above, the real economic growth between 1960s and 1980s had been excellent. The average real
economic growth during the 1960s was 10%. In the 1970s, the average rate was 5% at which time
the Japanese economy was considered as a matured economy and followed by 4% during the 1980s

Gender Diverty And Gender Poverty In Japan And Japan
Japan and Germany are two influential core nations with immense industrial and technological
power, but these two countries regardless face issues within their economy and society. Several of
Germany's problems include the absence of government aid, health risks, and the economic
hardships women face. In Japan, their issues involve the unbalance distribution of labor, women
underrepresented in high–ranking jobs, and the impact a parent's financial status has on their child's
future. Although Germany and Japan are two separate countries, it is a surprise that they share a few
similar issues relating to poverty and gender equality. The increase of child poverty will be the first
issue to be discussed. The other major issue is the health risks faced by both Germany and Japan.
Finally, the last issue will be the inequalities women face in their male–dominated countries.
Child poverty is a growing concern in both Japan and Germany with the number of children living
in poverty growing at a constant rate. Due to child poverty, children in both countries are less likely
to continue their education and instead drop out. As mentioned in the article, Child poverty in Japan:

An Evaluation Of A Company At This Time
First of all, I am glad to inform you that I am thrilled to be advising your company at this time.
Thus, I would do my very best to help the company to perform at its best. In order to accomplish
this, first I would like to introduce the current economic, politics, and the social conditions in Japan
to help the company to decide whether or not it should invest money in this country. This
information is crucial in business because all these three factors mentioned above play a significant
role for private businesses to be successful in certain countries. Therefore, I would like to start this
advisement with the economic situation in Japan since this is the most important of all three.
Initially, for investor companies, the economic conditions of the country that the firm is investing is
vital. For example, an investment for Zimbabwe is not going to be a great decision. Zimbabwe is a
country surrounded by a myriad of problems. For instance, "Zimbabwe's GDP has declined by 38
percent between 1998 and 2003" (Raftopoulos, 2015) also the inflation in Zimbabwe is enormous
that the price of consumer items like meat and clothes rose by 223 percent in a week (Wines, 2007).
This economic condition can be readily understood that the economy in Zimbabwe is highly
unstable; therefore, the investment will be a poor decision. On the other hand, the economy in Japan
is quite stable. Japan is one of the biggest exporters in the world also they have they third largest
GDP. However, after the

The Cove, By Mark Monroe And Directed By Louis Psihoyos
Dogs are regarded as man's best friend, but in the sea, that title is claimed by dolphins. Humans have
long regarded dolphins as magical and friendly creatures. With their penchant for saving humans
from dire situations like shark encounters or drowning, and their friendly playfulness, dolphins have
certainly earned their reputation. The Cove is an award–winning film written by Mark Monroe and
directed by Louis Psihoyos in which an investigation id made of the annual carnage in Japan where
hundreds of dolphins are dispatched in masses. Although it has been shown that dolphins are
sentient creatures, the Japanese government utilizes dubious ethic methods for still participating in
the destruction of dolphin populations.
Japan is renowned around the world for being an extremely prosperous nation despite being the only
populace to have been bombed by nuclear weapons. From that point on, the Japanese has
reinvigorated a more modern culture. But for the outcry of respect for traditional Japanese culture,
the coast–local fishermen claim that their justification for hunting dolphins is that "You eat cows.
Well, we eat dolphins" (The Cove). The workers inform protestors that it is part of their culture to
partake in the production and consumption of dolphin meat. The fishermen clarify that dolphins in
Japan are like cows in the U.S. Just as the U.S. businesses cultivate farm animal agriculture as a
food source, the Japanese do so too. Therefore, the Japanese fishermen are

The World Of World War 2
World War 2 was one of the most catastrophic events in human history. With millions dying in very
few years, the destruction has left a scar on nations that is still visible in the present day. One of the
most terrifying nations back during the days of war was Japan. Their culture promoted war, fighting,
and being as ruthless as possible, causing them to be an extreme threat to world peace. The military
looked into ancient myths about the Japanese, and the Emperor in particular, as they were said to be
directly related to the Sun Goddess, Amaterasu Omikami. The nation and military of Japan wanted
to bring racial and spiritual purity into the world, and as Laurence Rees put it, "The Japanese had
been 'brainwashed' for centuries". The war in the Japanese front took longer to end, and many
speculate that if the United States had not created the atom bomb, the war in Asia would have lasted
many more years. The answers for this prolongation is rooted deep in Japanese culture and history.
There are many strange examples and acts from the Japanese military during World War 2. For
example, not a single soldier would ever surrender as POW. Due to rules by the military and the
indoctrination of beliefs, soldiers would refuse to accept defeat. This had roots in the government as
well, and the Emperor of Japan along with the rest of the government refused surrender even when
defeat was apparent. The interpretation of Japanese social, military, and historical culture caused

To understand the differences between Japanese and Chinese business systems we must first
understand the meaning of a "business system". A "business system" is a "methodical procedure or
process, used as a delivery mechanism for providing specific goods or services to customers in a
well defined market" (1). Unlike the Eastern ways of doing business, Asian–Pacific business is
heavily influenced by religion and the ways of society plays an important role in the approach they

Therefore it seems that Japanese business is like a family, employing their workers for life in a

Economy:
Japan enjoyed a period of high productive development since the end of World War II. It boomed in
the late 60's and 70's and then came to an immense halt in the 80's and 90's and still vacillating
today. Since the beginning of 60's, Japans growth has been called a "post–war economic miracle"
(11). This is because, in that time, they had an "average growth rate of 10% in the 1960s, 5% in the
1970s, and 4% in the 1980s" (11). In this time, according to Richard Katz in his book "Japan: The
System That Soured" the Japanese government applied a "developing country strategy" which
involved very low interest rates so that Japanese companies, that during that time, needed money to
start up their businesses, could take out loans at a extraordinarily cheap price (10). They also used a
system called WAT. This system was "a peer–to–peer complementary currency system" (12) which
would "allow for small businesses to issue IOUs (called WAT–ticket) to their suppliers" (12). This
allowed for a "high–cost structure" (10) where "efficient manufacturers and inefficient service–
related sectors" were able to "co–exist" (10).
Has the government played a role in this success and does it

Douglas MacArthur, the Supreme Commander Allied Powers (SCAP) in Japan, led the largely
unilateral U.S. effort to rebuild Japan. The U.S. occupation and reconstruction met with varying
degrees of political, social and economic success, but overall, the U.S. succeeded in developing
Japan as a strong responsible power in the Pacific. Additionally, studying the whole–of–government

At the end of the war, Japanese citizens occupied numerous countries in the Western Pacific, while
countless Chinese and Koreans resided within Japan as slave labor. At the time Japan had no vessels
or other manner in which to conduct the mass movement of these populations. Under U.S.
supervision and with hundreds of ships borrowed from the U.S., six million Japanese returned to
Japan within three years; and nearly one million Chinese and Koreans returned to their respective
countries in the same timeframe.5 In the end the combined U.S. and Japanese social reconstruction
efforts successfully resolved the challenges facing the population. The U.S. economic effort was not
as widely successful in comparison to the political and social efforts, but there were several
successes that ultimately set the conditions for Japan's rise to a top world economy. The 1947 Land
Reform Program, which essentially consisted of the government purchase and redesignation of land
that was then resold to tenant farmers, "is seen as the single most important factor for quelling rural
discontent and promoting political stability in the early postwar period."6 Efforts to re–energize the
natural resources successfully stabilized the coal mining and fishing industries. Coal mining suffered
from a removal of inexpensive labor with the repatriation of Chinese and Korean slaves, but the

Examples Of Westernization Of Asia
Dannielle Vogel
Professor Scott–James
History 101
Microtheme #2
The Westernization of Asia
The mid–to–late 1800s was a time of intensive change for many on the Asian continent. It was a
time for innovation and modernization in which some embraced, while others fought to halt
progress and maintain tradition. Japan was the most positively affected by westernization as a
country, and they utilized it in ways to benefit their country and still maintain their independence
and identity. China and Korea were bystanders to the change, they did not welcome westernization
or foreign influences, and according to Fukuzawa Yukichi, they did "...not know how to progress
either personally or as a nation," (Yukichi, 1885). In his article "Good–bye Asia," Yukichi speaks of
Japan's embrace of westernization as a commodity, he is an enthusiastic advocate for the
convenience awarded by modern transportation and the necessary changes to Japan's government
system.
Japan was among the first Asian civilizations to embrace innovation with open arms. Though their
respect for traditions did not waiver, they were (minus the ruling caste) open to change and
advancements in technology. Asian cultures have, for the entirety of history, had more advancements
in technology and have placed a higher value on education than almost any other culture around the
world. It is no surprise that when the Japanese found out about the railroad system, that they would
want to construct their own railways to enhance

Nanking Massacre And The Nanking Massacre
In 1937, the Chinese city of Nanking was devastated when the Japanese Imperial Army invaded,
killing around 300,000 people . The Japanese soldiers went into people's homes searching for
Chinese soldiers, and killing civilians. These devastating events are known as the "Rape of
Nanking", or as the Nanking Massacre. However, the history of atrocities like this are not always
taught. Things such as the Japanese history textbook controversy show how one event can be
remembered, or portrayed, in many different ways. For the most part, history can be skewed for
political reasons. For Japan, making history their own had benefits, and these benefits could help the
government keep their people on their side of things, and it would try to legitimize their own views
on their history.
The forming of loyalty and patriotism through selective teachings of the Nanking Massacre has built
tensions between China and Japan that have, and still do, separate two nations.
The history, which is taught correctly in most nations, is horrifying. The Nanking Massacre lasted
for a span of a few months, with Japanese soldiers sparing no man, woman or child. The title "Rape
of Nanking" is to describe the raping of women, numbering anywhere from 20,000 to 80,000 . Some
of the Chinese captives, some of which were Chinese soldiers, were forced to dig graves for groups
of other captives to be buried alive in, and then would be buried themselves when the next group of
captives dug a new grave .

Japan's Transformation from Isolation to Military Powerhouse

  • 1. The Colonization Of Korea Under Japanese Rule Introduction The colonization of Korea under Japanese rule from 1910 to 1945 was one of controversial histories as it shaped Korean society in both positive and negative ways. This paper examines Korea's colonial relationship with Japan. In this paper, I argue the Japanese influence of modernity was a positive gain to Korean society by referring to some examples. First of all, this paper shows a brief history of the colonization from 1910 to 1945 to explain what was going on during that period. Secondly, this paper discusses economic development in Korea society as a positive effect because Japanese economic policy had an important role in the economy of the colony. Thirdly, this paper analyzes three types of authority through new political system which were created by Japanese in Korea. At the same time, this paper shows local autonomy which was developed due to those types of authority as a positive effect. Fourthly, this paper describes the rise of nationalism during that period as their nationalist movements affected their independence in a positive way. In conclusion, this paper summarizes main ideas of these examples and main argument. A brief history of the colonization From 1910 to 1945, Korea was under Japanese rule as a colonial country (Mackerras, Murphey & Stapleton 2012). Japan exploited Korea in various ways during while the country was occupied as a colony. For example, living standards were really low since Japan gained a lot of raw materials and food ... • 3. Japan 's Horse Meat Is A Popular Dish? Did you know that in Japan horse meat is a popular dish? It is often called basashi, sakura, or sakuraniku because of its pink color(sakura means cherry blossom and niku means meat). It is usually served raw as sashimi in thin slices dipped in soy sauce, often with ginger and onions added. This is only one of the fascinating things about Japan that you are going to learn throughout the course of this report. The main thing you are going to learn about Japan in this report is that Japan is an amazing country with a gigantic variety of things to explore. Japan is an island nation in the Pacific Ocean that is located in East Asia and is comprised of 6852 islands, 430 of them being inhabited. The total population that occupies those islands is 127,368,088 people, making Japan the 10th most populous country in the world. Japan has a total land area of 364,485 square Kilometers and more than 70% of it is mountainous. In these mountains there are over 100 active volcanoes. One of the active volcanoes is the famous Mt. Fuji.(Mount Fuji is a distinctive feature of the geography of Japan. It stands 3,776.24 m (12,389 ft) high and is located near the Pacific coast of central Honshu, just west of Tokyo.) Tokyo is the capital of Japan. Japan is generally a rainy country with high humidity. Because of its wide range of latitude, seasonal winds, and different types of ocean currents, Japan has a variety of climates ranging from: hot, dry, humid, wet, snowy, cool, warm, and windy. ... • 5. The Taagic Story of Dolphin Mistreatment Ever since I was young, I was always fond of the ocean. The waves that the sea created intriqued me and the animals that lived underwater were even more unbelievable. I found the dolphin to be extremely fascinating. Since the first time I saw one while surfing at my local beach, Manly, I was hooked. What I didnt know was the horiffic story behind those playful creatures I saw at aquariums every year. Whether it be on a primary school excursion or a family outing with my family to the aquarium, those "happy" looking creatures beyond the glass where no more than abused animals living a nightmare. So where did they come from? After much research, I found that the countries contributing most to dolphin killing where located in Asian countries in particular Japan. As you can see in the following chart showing whaling distribution throughout the globe, Japan is a hotpot for dolphin hunts. Because the dolphins can be sold to marine parks and butchers across the country for such good money, fisherman in the Region of Taiji (an area with large influxes of marine mammals), kill them annually. Other regions such as Guinea and other Pacific Islands have openly admited that Japan had been financially aiding them to undertake dolphin kills. Whats most appauling is the way in which the dolphins are killed. The Tiaji Fishing Cooperative in southeastern Japan have put numerous efforts into methods that kill the dolphin quickest in the hope that more killings means more profit. The ... • 7. The Meiji Restoration : Change And Domitarianism In Japan While modern Japan and the Orthodox have worked together to maintain the country's traditional and cultural sensitivity, they have cooperated with modernization in order to promote the advancement of their country. Orthodox and Japan have managed to cooperate as Japan continues to hold to the orthodox traditions as a conservative society, preserve orthodox traditions and continue to have their lifestyle influenced by the traditional orthodox views. Japan has always and continues to hold strong to the orthodox as a conservative society. At the same time, they are curious people, and are willing to accept change and modernization. The event known as the "Meiji Restoration" is a good example of Japan's ability to merge their orthodox tradition with modern policies and systems. The Meiji Restoration began in 1868 when the Tokugawa shogun lost his power and the emperor took rule. The Meiji Restoration resulted in a "highly centralized, bureaucratic government" (The Meiji Restoration and Modernization, Asia for Educators). Before the Restoration began, Japan lost control to its foreign trade and legal system to the Western powers, such as countries from Europe and the United States. However, Japan eventually managed to retake control of their legal and trade system. In order to do this, the emperor formed a group from younger and lower rank samurais. With advice from these samurais, the emperor was able to establish a "constitution establishing an elected parliament", a "highly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Foreign Military During Control On The Street Liana Arnot Professor Dominguez English 101 4 December 2015 Imagine stepping outside and there was a foreign military in control on the street that you live on. Having one 's home invaded by an unfamiliar person is a scary and traumatizing experience. It encourages a person to take more precautionary measures to ensure that their home is safe, but being watchful is not always a guarantee of safety. This concept reflects what the people of Okinawa experienced in the nineteen forties and still struggle with today. The beautiful island of Okinawa is located south of Japan and is composed of several small islands. Okinawa was its own Ryukyu Kingdom before it was annexed by the Japanese in 1879 (mainichi.jp). Today, the Japanese government itself does not truly treat Okinawa as an equal to mainland Japan. In fact, many of the Okinawans do not consider themselves to be Japanese and actively voice that their culture is starkly different than that of the Japanese people. The Japanese government is placing these bases on the Okinawan's home without consulting them. It is an unfair act upon the locals because their home is being taken from and they can do nothing to stop it. The bases are not only disliked by the locals but it is also harming their marine life and polluting their environment. Mainland Japan is fully capable of housing the new military bases but they would rather throw it on the nonviolent island of Okinawa. The locals of Okinawa have not had a pleasant experience ... • 11. Essay about Transformation of Japan Transformation of Japan During the time period between the 1850s and 1950s, Japan underwent massive changes politically, economically, and socially. Acknowledging the failure of isolation, Japan imitated the West in an attempt to modernize, however, still retaining its own identity. A reorganized and more centralized government allowed Japan to industrialize in half the time it took the nations of Western Europe. Industrialization provided Japan with the tools needed to transform itself from a half civilized and "backwards" society during isolation, to a dominating superpower during WWII. In 1853 during the Tokugawa shogunate, Matthew Perry, an American commodore, arrived with an army at Edo Bay to coerce the Japanese ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Japan entered the race for colonies. Japan became imperialist after 1890 due to the need to pay the new army, search for raw materials and new resources, and avoid Western intrusion of Japan's possessions. Japan quickly defeated China in the Sino–Japanese War in 1895 gaining territory in northern China. In 1902, Japan allied itself with Britain, demonstrating the arrival of Japan as an equal to the Western powers. In 1904, Japan won the Russo–Japanese war on account of its superior navy. In 1910, Japan annexed Korea. Economically, Korea was economically exploited. The Great depression called for radical measures, which included military aggression. Japanese military played a major role in setting diplomatic policy. The military was separate from the bureaucracy and adhered to the emperor. The military saw Japan's liberalism as a threat to traditional Japanese values and customs and the military's position in the government. In 1931, the military captured Manchuria without government approval. In 1932, several military officials assassinated the prime minister. As a result, a mildly military government was created as militaristic prime ministers presided. The militaristic prime ministers called for expansion in Asia to create an empire. The demand for wider conquests by the military drove Japan to enter WWII. After WWII, Japan was devastated by war, but the aid of the U.S. allowed them to recover quickly. The ... • 13. The Problem Of Overpopulation In Japan Introduction When the early humans left Africa, there was only 5,000 people. Now, the planet is overpopulated, over 7 billion and counting. Nations all over the world to use too much of their finite resources and spend too much money to maintain the life of their population. Other issues intensify with the addition of more people, such as poverty, starvation, and climate change. This is a problem even developed countries face, like Japan for instance. However, Japan has been successful in combating the problems that arrive with overpopulation in several ways. In order for the world as a whole to overcome overpopulation, nations must look to Japan as an example. Dealing With Overpopulation in Japan In regards to a country's population, Japan is in the stage 4 category, meaning it has a low birth rate and a high life expectancy. Specifically, they have a low percentage of youth and 25% of their population is over 65 years old (N. Probasco, personal communication, 2017). These factors have led to an overwhelming population. As a result, the Japanese government created solutions the slow the growth of more people and maintain those who are still alive. Supporting the Aging Population As stated earlier, Japan has a high number of elderly people, 25% over the age of 65. This can be an issue for the government economically. There has to be enough living communities built to accommodate the elderly as well as a staff on payroll to take care of them. One solution is the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Meiji Reforms Essay Evaluate the success of the Meiji Reforms in undertaking imperialism in Asia. The Meiji reforms were significantly successful in undertaking imperialism in Asia. Imperialism can be understood as expanding a country's power through increasing one's influence, gaining more territory and controlling the region's economy. For japan to undertake imperialism in Asia they needed to establish a centralised government, a strong military, a technologically advanced and unified nation working together for the same goal. They achieved this by introducing the Meji reforms. From 1868 to 1912, Japan grew from a technologically backwards nation to a world power, defeating both China and Russia swiftly and decisively. In addition to this, Japan had succeeded in establishing a parliament, drafting a constitution, developed a strong legal, financial and economic system, created a strong industry and improved social welfare and education standards. These improvements and implementations made Japan internationally recognised and respected as a modernised country. Looking back, we can identify numerous reasons that led to the success of undertaking imperialism in Asia through the use of the Meiji reforms. The military reform had a significant role in undertaking imperialism in Asia. The military reform of Meiji Japan was focused on establishing a powerful and unified national military under the ultimate leadership of the emperor. To achieve this, the Meiji government created equality among ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Japan And China Relations During The End Of World War II Japan and China have been in cold relations ever since the end of World War II. After the war, there was barely any diplomacy to bring together their relation. Not until 1972 Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka of Japan visited China with an official invitation. At the scene, both sides were willing for reconciliation and normalization, result with the Joint Communique between two governments. From that moment on, the (economic) relations of the two nations has been reestablished, encouraged and developed rapidly (China, Japan Joint Communique, 1972). There is an opinion that China's incredible (economic) developing rate has greatly influenced Japan diplomatic with Beijing since that time. And this essay is going to support this argument with data as well as historical and contemporary context. First, energy requirement is usually critical to the development and modernization of China and the stabilization of Japan. Therefore, variables that related to it can influence both countries' economic interest, lead to the consideration of policy makers. It is clear that both countries were in need of developing their gas and oil fields. Second, Japanese engagement into China market have changed a lot – Japanese companies and corporations were having decreasing influence on the economy of the client country – led to the need of adjusting investment policies within the government body. Third, China is modernizing and in many ways will be able to surpass Japan in near future. Therefore ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. The Importance Of The Japanese American Internment "My priority was to try to show the American people that we are just as loyal as anybody else. We need to prove our loyalty because the reason why we're in camp is because the American public says that we are enemy aliens. Were loyalty to Japan and so forth. And that perceptions got to be changed." – Susumu Satow. This statement is very powerful stating we need to show the American people we are not your enemies but your friends. Do not be scared of us just because we are Japanese. Prejudice played a large role in the Japanese–American relocation because of the 1894 treaty, conflict over China, and the Russian–Japanese War. The Japanese were never awarded for their bravery going into those internment camps. They were spit on and called names. Imagine being in that situation of hatred. Japanese–American relationships were strained (during the)years before World War II. One of the reasons the United States and Japan did not get along was in 1894 when a treaty was signed allowing Japanese Immigrants into America allowing them the same rights as US citizens. In 1906, this treaty was violated when the San Francisco Board of Education passed a provision sending Japanese and Chinese children to segregated schools. This movement angered the Japanese Government because it violated the treaty. In late 1907 and into early 1908, letters were exchanged between the United States and Japan known as the "Gentlemen's agreement". The Gentlemen's Agreement was for the US government to ... • 21. Keerti's Heavy Influence In Japan In Japan, many politicians and important people of power are families who have heavy influence in Japan's economy through companies for products, television, business, and the like. Through this financial power in advertisements and influence over what can be placed and expressed in media, there is power over what is considered and thought about within the country. Keerti explains that this aspect of Japanese life needs to be revised in order to achieve democracy so that all voices are heard equally and no voices are left or censored out. Keerti also expresses how political engagement and civics classes are mandatory within secondary school and college in order to prepare students to become informed citizens. She says there is room for corruption ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One common aspect across the three personalities is the degradation of the power of the rule by the elite. All three agree that there is no good democracy that comes from a select group. Not only because it is the elite in Japan, but it is those in power who are the problem. In Japan, a majority of the House of Chancellors are passed down through bloodline or company relation. We cannot be certain that those individuals are trained and knowledgeable in the problems in the political view. However, this also brings up the concern of public awareness of political issues. Today, according to Ikeda, Kohno, and Yamada's studies on citizen understanding political concepts between 1960– 1990, many Japanese citizens feel that they had no say in political decision making and that they were not well educated in the policies and issues being discussed. As we discussed in class, this is a common problem amongst democracy as a whole, not having a well educated, well informed general public voting. Finally, the aspect of religious liberty brought within the political spectrum. Although this contradicts John Locke's beliefs of keeping the politic and religious spheres separate, this unity of religion ties together an ideal form of democracy for all three individuals. • 23. How Did The Meiji Restoration Improve The Government Of... The top to bottom Japanese revolution known as the Meiji Restoration occurred in 1868 and it completely changed the system of government of Japan, which had been under the strict control of the absolute rule of the Tokugawa Shoguns that kept Japan in a feudal state. The Tokugawa government also kept Japan, for the most part, isolated from the rest of the world believing that they had no need for Western ideas. All that changed under the fiction of the "restoration" of the imperial government under the control of the emperor, as the revolutionary leaders of the Meiji Restoration realized that if they did not modernize on a massive scale they would face an ever increasing foreign threat much like China was experiencing. Instead, the Japanese attempted to avoid going into foreign debt and instead concentrated on building up their base using their own hard work and longsighted planning instead However, unlike China, Japan is a country of limited natural resources and there is only so much that it can do on its own. Therefore, the building up of its military into a first class army and navy was imperative as the leaders realized that the only way for future expansion was to become an imperial colonial power like Europe, which had gained power through its own colonial acquisitions. In a way, the rapid expansion of Japan with its limited resources meant that in order to expand further it would need to conquer other countries for their resources as pointed out in an article by Yasukichi Asuba when he wrote, The shortage of a domestic supply of raw materials and fuel due to rising population pressure, a rise in protectionism in foreign countries, and the recession of the domestic economy after 1929 are said to have been the economic cause of Japanese ... • 25. Japanese Politics : Japan 's Political System Japanese Politics in the Shadows Japan's political system remarkably mirrors that of the west, especially that of the United States. However, the method of how Japan's politicians carry out their agendas and gather voter support takes place in backstage politics which has now prompted people to demand for a more transparent government that work for them and not for the game of politics. This backstage politics has caused a disconnection between the national leaders and the people that they represent because they now have to take into account the need of a particular group or person over the population they represent. Fortunately, there has been a growing movement in Japan where the people are starting to actively show their discontent and want for reform. Japanese politics can be separated into two different political zones; local and national politics. Each zones use utilize the same V structure of organization, but it is when we reach the national scene that we find the disconnection between the politician and the people. The manner in which political relationships are develop and maintain in Japan are influenced by the inverted V structure of organization (what is actual term for this) (Hendry, 199). In order for politicians to build a reputation for themselves within a local community and later the national political scene they need participate in the exchange and reciprocity cycle. • 27. Case Study: Ikea In Japan FIRST ENTRY Ikea first entered Japan in 1974 but it then quit later in 1986. From a developing country to a developed country, Japanese experienced rapid industrial growth after World War II. Japanese became the largest economies in Asia with an annual GDP growth of nearly 10 percent. With the increasing number of population living in the city, the demand for products and services in Tokyo increases significantly. Thus, Ikea decided to enter Japan as the first step of its expansion on the international market in Asia. SECOND ENTRY In 1974, Japan had attempted to establish its business in Japan through a joint venture with a Japanese company. Ikea then withdrew from Japan market in 1986 due to its long term stagnant sales. About two decades later, having the assistance of Japan External Trade Organization, Ikea ... In particular, it can discourage consumers from buying luxury goods (like furniture with fancy design). Therefore, periods of deflation often lead to lower consumer spending and lower economic growth, in turn creates more deflationary pressure in the economy. This certainly causes malaise to Ikea's success in Japan. Just like any other developed country, Japan is facing the problem of mounting government debt. Japan's public debt has currently exceeded one million billion yen (243% of GDP). Although 90% of this debt is held domestically, it has reached an extremely high level. By way of comparison, the portion of debt held domestically is 70% in the United Kingdom, 47% in the United States and 35% in Germany. Pros And Cons Of Japan Government The 1955 system, time known as the one in which Japanese government was under the control of a one–party–dominated and conservative structure that lasted over nearly forty years, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) coming from the union of two conservatives parties: the Japan Democratic Party and Liberal Party, was a functional structure that showed a relative stability and consistency within the state against its opposition counterpart, the Japan Socialist Party (JSP). The system's notable elements mainly consisted in anti–labor and pro–business policies that protected the home market from outside influence with low levels of social welfare spending, making Japan pass through a growth period though, at the same time, such system presented cases of Diet's unconstitutionalism, corruption scandals, and a lack of organization in more than one aspect. ... • 33. How Music Can Enforce Or Challenge Power Throughout the last two week of lecture, I have learnt that there are numerous ways where music can enforce or challenge power. Throughout the years, "music has always been an integral part of displays of political power, conveying national identity and official ideologies through symbolic acts." The major three general ways how music can enforce or challenge power is through by the language and text that is use for the lyrics, the historical background of the piece, and where the piece was performed. When the apartheid ended in 1990s and the New South Africa era started, there was a problem with the national anthem. In 1997, a new combined anthem mixes "Nkosi sikelel' iAfrika" with "Die Stem van Suid Afrika" and the lyrics in four languages: Zulu, Xhosa, Afrikaans, and English. The lyrics employ the four most widely spoken of South Africa's official languages to represent the diversity in South Africa. "Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika" (Lord, Bless Africa) was adopted by the African National Congress (ANC) in 1925 as the official closing hymn of the organization. It has a long historical context behind the song. During this period, South Africa was in huge racial discrimination between the Native and the Whites. This hymn was a link to resistance from early on. Bob Marley's "Zimbabwe" lyrics is important. It had inspired Zimbabwe National Liberation Army during their struggle for independence "Every man gotta right to decide his own destiny. In addition, the venue where this ... Moreover, the houses which were located in the radiological evacuation zone can not be used anymore (Dhitinut Ratnapradipa PhD, Ruffing & Victor White MS, 2012). Local government set emergency point to settle affected people. Additionally, waste disposal is an important issue during this event. The majority of waste carried harmful bacteria with mud and dirt, and polluted with PCBs or asbestos (Makinen, 2011). In order to accomplish this, first I would like to introduce the current economic, politics, and the social conditions in Japan to help the company to decide whether or not it should invest money in this country. This information is crucial in business because all these three factors mentioned above play a significant role for private businesses to be successful in certain countries. Therefore, I would like to start this advisement with the economic situation in Japan since this is the most important of all three. Initially, for investor companies, the economic conditions of the country that the firm is investing is vital. For example, an investment for Zimbabwe is not going to be a great decision. • 67. The World Of World War 2 World War 2 was one of the most catastrophic events in human history. With millions dying in very few years, the destruction has left a scar on nations that is still visible in the present day. One of the most terrifying nations back during the days of war was Japan. Their culture promoted war, fighting, and being as ruthless as possible, causing them to be an extreme threat to world peace. The military looked into ancient myths about the Japanese, and the Emperor in particular, as they were said to be directly related to the Sun Goddess, Amaterasu Omikami. The nation and military of Japan wanted to bring racial and spiritual purity into the world, and as Laurence Rees put it, "The Japanese had been 'brainwashed' for centuries". The war in the Japanese front took longer to end, and many speculate that if the United States had not created the atom bomb, the war in Asia would have lasted many more years. The answers for this prolongation is rooted deep in Japanese culture and history. There are many strange examples and acts from the Japanese military during World War 2. For example, not a single soldier would ever surrender as POW. Due to rules by the military and the indoctrination of beliefs, soldiers would refuse to accept defeat. This had roots in the government as well, and the Emperor of Japan along with the rest of the government refused surrender even when defeat was apparent. The interpretation of Japanese social, military, and historical culture caused individual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Compare and Contrast Business Systems in Japan and China.... Compare and contrast business systems in Japan and China. Answer with reference to relevant theories and use comparative country and/or corporate examples. Word count: 2,608 To understand the differences between Japanese and Chinese business systems we must first understand the meaning of a "business system". A "business system" is a "methodical procedure or process, used as a delivery mechanism for providing specific goods or services to customers in a well defined market" (1). Unlike the Eastern ways of doing business, Asian–Pacific business is heavily influenced by religion and the ways of society plays an important role in the approach they take on doing business. Therefore it seems that Japanese business is like a family, employing their workers for life in a closed community of loyal, trusted and harmonious beliefs. Economy: Japan enjoyed a period of high productive development since the end of World War II. It boomed in the late 60's and 70's and then came to an immense halt in the 80's and 90's and still vacillating today. Since the beginning of 60's, Japans growth has been called a "post–war economic miracle" (11). This is because, in that time, they had an "average growth rate of 10% in the 1960s, 5% in the 1970s, and 4% in the 1980s" (11). In this time, according to Richard Katz in his book "Japan: The System That Soured" the Japanese government applied a "developing country strategy" which involved very low interest rates so that Japanese companies, that during that time, needed money to start up their businesses, could take out loans at a extraordinarily cheap price (10). They also used a system called WAT. This system was "a peer–to–peer complementary currency system" (12) which would "allow for small businesses to issue IOUs (called WAT–ticket) to their suppliers" (12). This allowed for a "high–cost structure" (10) where "efficient manufacturers and inefficient service– related sectors" were able to "co–exist" (10). • 71. Post-WW II Occupation In concluding his book on World War II in the Pacific, Eagle Against the Sun, Ronald H. Spector stated that, "The United States acquired a strong democratic ally in the new Japan which emerged from the wreckage of war."1 Following the Japanese surrender on September, 2, 1945, General Douglas MacArthur, the Supreme Commander Allied Powers (SCAP) in Japan, led the largely unilateral U.S. effort to rebuild Japan. The U.S. occupation and reconstruction met with varying degrees of political, social and economic success, but overall, the U.S. succeeded in developing Japan as a strong responsible power in the Pacific. Additionally, studying the whole–of–government methods for the U.S. post–war reconstruction in Japan renders historical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the end of the war, Japanese citizens occupied numerous countries in the Western Pacific, while countless Chinese and Koreans resided within Japan as slave labor. At the time Japan had no vessels or other manner in which to conduct the mass movement of these populations. Under U.S. supervision and with hundreds of ships borrowed from the U.S., six million Japanese returned to Japan within three years; and nearly one million Chinese and Koreans returned to their respective countries in the same timeframe.5 In the end the combined U.S. and Japanese social reconstruction efforts successfully resolved the challenges facing the population. The U.S. economic effort was not as widely successful in comparison to the political and social efforts, but there were several successes that ultimately set the conditions for Japan's rise to a top world economy. The 1947 Land Reform Program, which essentially consisted of the government purchase and redesignation of land that was then resold to tenant farmers, "is seen as the single most important factor for quelling rural discontent and promoting political stability in the early postwar period."6 Efforts to re–energize the natural resources successfully stabilized the coal mining and fishing industries. Coal mining suffered from a removal of inexpensive labor with the repatriation of Chinese and Korean slaves, but the introduction ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Examples Of Westernization Of Asia Dannielle Vogel Professor Scott–James History 101 Microtheme #2 The Westernization of Asia The mid–to–late 1800s was a time of intensive change for many on the Asian continent. It was a time for innovation and modernization in which some embraced, while others fought to halt progress and maintain tradition. Japan was the most positively affected by westernization as a country, and they utilized it in ways to benefit their country and still maintain their independence and identity. China and Korea were bystanders to the change, they did not welcome westernization or foreign influences, and according to Fukuzawa Yukichi, they did "...not know how to progress either personally or as a nation," (Yukichi, 1885). In his article "Good–bye Asia," Yukichi speaks of Japan's embrace of westernization as a commodity, he is an enthusiastic advocate for the convenience awarded by modern transportation and the necessary changes to Japan's government system. Japan was among the first Asian civilizations to embrace innovation with open arms. Though their respect for traditions did not waiver, they were (minus the ruling caste) open to change and advancements in technology. Asian cultures have, for the entirety of history, had more advancements in technology and have placed a higher value on education than almost any other culture around the world. It is no surprise that when the Japanese found out about the railroad system, that they would want to construct their own railways to enhance ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Nanking Massacre And The Nanking Massacre In 1937, the Chinese city of Nanking was devastated when the Japanese Imperial Army invaded, killing around 300,000 people . The Japanese soldiers went into people's homes searching for Chinese soldiers, and killing civilians. These devastating events are known as the "Rape of Nanking", or as the Nanking Massacre. However, the history of atrocities like this are not always taught. Things such as the Japanese history textbook controversy show how one event can be remembered, or portrayed, in many different ways. For the most part, history can be skewed for political reasons. For Japan, making history their own had benefits, and these benefits could help the government keep their people on their side of things, and it would try to legitimize their own views on their history. The forming of loyalty and patriotism through selective teachings of the Nanking Massacre has built tensions between China and Japan that have, and still do, separate two nations. The history, which is taught correctly in most nations, is horrifying. The Nanking Massacre lasted for a span of a few months, with Japanese soldiers sparing no man, woman or child. The title "Rape of Nanking" is to describe the raping of women, numbering anywhere from 20,000 to 80,000 . Some of the Chinese captives, some of which were Chinese soldiers, were forced to dig graves for groups of other captives to be buried alive in, and then would be buried themselves when the next group of captives dug a new grave .
