2. Orientation Week
During orientation week we had several speakers that taught about what the
hospital is all about. We learned about different HIPAA violations, and
security. We also were given tours around the hospitals, that was really
helpful. I believe that without the speakers during orientation week, I would
have been lost, and they were very informative.

“This week i was in the CICU at St. Joe. I got to observe how they take care of
the patients after they get cardiac work done. What amazed me is how
quickly some people get in and out of the nursing unit. There was a women
who had her cath at 10 and was out of the hospital at 3 o clock. I was also
impressed with how well organized the unit was, and how they moved a lot
of patients in and out in a single day.” – week 4
“This week i was at the OR. It was by far the best rotation i have had so
far. The first day i was there, i saw a hip replacement surgery, and gall
bladder stone removal. The second surgery i saw was really interesting
because they performed it with a camera inside of the stomach. The second
day i saw them remove a gall bladder. It was really intersting because they
used a tool that used electricity to cut through tissue and remove the gall
bladder. Over all it was the best rotation so far.” – week 10

“So i was at general surgery at St. Francis this week. I thought it was pretty
boring but that's because i don't want to be a nurse. The nurses said that
nothing was going on so it seemed like a slow two days. I did get to see how
the nursing station works and how to set up IVs. They also showed me how
to discharge a patient. They were pretty informative but it doesn't seem like
something i would want to do.”- week 1
“This week i was at therapy. It was really interesting the methods they used
to help the patients. I really like therapy and thought it was one of the
better rotations. When i was there they had a group physical therapy
session with four little kids. They had them do different activities like
swinging and hopping. They were trying to help build confidence along with
physical stamina and balance. I also got to see how occupational therapy
works. I thought it was interesting how they had to do therapy on the daily
activities people do. I really enjoyed this rotation.” – week 9

“This week i was at the NICU. It was interesting because it is so much
different then all the other nursing stations. There wasn't really anything
going on, but it was really interesting to see how small the babies were. The
nurses said that all the babies were doing ok, and would more then likely be
dismissed soon. I also liked how the NICU was set up. It was a good
rotation.” –week 12
26. Final Reflection
All in all I have really enjoyed being in health academy. It has revealed to me
what it really means to own a job in health care. It has also allowed me to
enjoy following great people who enjoy their jobs. I have seen the good and
the bad of the hospital, and know what I will be getting into if I choose to
continue into the medical field. I really appreciate all the time that people
have taken this semester to help me learn through the St. Gianna Health
Academy.
